• How do you balance business process changes against the challenges of changing software?

  In my admittedly young career I've found myself writing code to support quirky business rules and processes. Inevitably these changes were always in some massively difficult code base and caused many issues. My question has a couple of parts: While software is a tool for businesses to make their lives easier, at what point do we as developers suggest a change in business process rather than in the software as the "magic bullet" to solve a particular problem. How do we as developers evangelize a certain level of reverence for the software as well as the difficulty involved in making changes simply to support the quirks of the business? I understand that these changes in business processes promote our industry, but in an analogy my father would understand: Which is easier, to melt down a hammer to forge a screwdriver to drive screws or to simply use nails since your hammer is already awesome...?

• is there a specialized educational institution in enterprise software design ?

  Is a software engineering degree sufficient for being able to design efficient code in enterprise architecture ? I mean that's what I want to do, some people go to game schools (Vancouver Film School) to make games or work in that industry. are there such similar programs for enterprise software design/development ? Are there special courses in Java EE space and .NET ? is it suitable to just focus on java or both ? My ultimate goal would be consulting and developing enterprise software independently....but right now, I am starting school and just keep learning on the side. any guidance to resources on this industry would be appreciated or your insights.   Hello everyone, I notice this site has a wealth of software professionals and I am investigating a career change to Software Engineering: *Particularly, I would like to know how likely one would be able to work from home or another country over the internet. Is this something that can be done and what does it usually entail? (time?,experience?, specific companies?, etc) *Currently, I am a teacher but always had a passion for tech. I am interested in a MS - Software Engineering program designed for individuals based from another field. Is this a wise degree to obtain? Would I be just wasting my time and money obtaining this degree? • Accessing JMX for Oracle WebLogic 11g

  In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4, we use the latest Oracle WebLogic release (11g). The instructions below illustrate a way of allowing a console like jconsole to remotely monitor and manage Oracle WebLogic using the JMX Mbeans. Typically management of Oracle WebLogic is done from Oracle Enterprise Manager or the Oracle Weblogic console application but you can also use JMX. To access the JMX capability for Oracle WebLogic 11g, for an Oracle Utilities Application Framework based product, using a JMX console (such as jconsole) the following process needs to be performed: Enable the JMX Management Server in the Oracle WebLogic console at splapp - Configuration - General - Advanced Settings option. Enable both Compatibility Mbean Server Enabled and Management EJB Enabled (this enables the legacy and new JMX interface). Save the changes This change will require a restart. In the startup of the Oracle WebLogic server in the $SPLSYSTEMLOGS/myserver.log (or %SPLESYSTEMLOGS%\myserver.log on Windows) you will see the BEA-149512 message indicating the Mbean servers have been started. The message will indicate the JMX URL that can be used to access the JMX Mbeans. The URL is in the format: service:jmx:iiop://host:port/jndi/mbeanserver where: host - Oracle WebLogic host name port - Oracle WebLogic port number mbeanserver - Mbean Server to access. Valid Values: weblogic.management.mbeanservers.runtime weblogic.management.mbeanservers.edit weblogic.management.mbeanservers.domainruntime For illustrative purposes we will use the domainruntime Mbean. Ensure that you execute the splenviron[.sh] utility to set the appropriate environment variables for the desired environment. Execute the following jconsole command to initiate the connection to the JMX Mbean server Windows: jconsole -J-Djava.class.path=%JAVA_HOME%\lib\jconsole.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\wljmxclient.jar -J-Djmx.remote.protocol.provider.pkgs=weblogic.management.remote Linux/Unix jconsole -J-Djava.class.path=$JAVA_HOME/lib/jconsole.jar;$WL_HOME/server/lib/wljmxclient.jar -J-Djmx.remote.protocol.provider.pkgs=weblogic.management.remote You will see a New Connection Dialog. Specify the URL from the previous steps into the Remote process (i.,e. service:jmx:iiop...). The credentials are the credentials specified for the Oracle WebLogic console. • Future direction for a developer who is expert in latest software technologies…

  Hi everyone, If a (new-coming) developer that learns latest technologies as well as can develop amazing stuff with those technologies and did Bachelors in Arts (BA). So what ’ll be the future of this kind of developer? I meant did he can get good job without degree? I think (but it is the universal truth that) no one (org or company) permit these kind of developers to join them because degree is must for job!! I’m worried about why the world depends upon degree? Why degree is necessary for good job? If a developer has a good experience, why he cannot be able to get good job without degree? What is the future of developer that starts his life as a freelancer and learns everything himself with the help of online available resources? Why companies prerequisite the degree for a good job? A developer without degree can be expert than that who have a degree of MSC etc. Because in 3rd world countries especially Pakistan, a BSC level student taught VB6 and the MSC level student learns C/C++. The common student doesn’t know about latest innovative technologies and he think that the world is depending upon VB6 or C/C++. What is the comparison of that students with a developer that do Bachelors in Arts but know (and can do well with) latest technologies.

• Too many connections to 212.192.255.240

  Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. UPDATE: This is the HiJackThis log file and I can't find any thing weird. Also, the program is also trying to create connections to 91.205.127.63, which is also from Russia.   I have 5 books in my "read-wish-list". When do I read them? I mean I could force myself to use 1 hour during working hours, but this will last for 2 days then someone will ask me to do more "high priority things". One option can be reading at night, but also this has limits, even because I prefer to spend time with kids. Could you please share your experiences? A long term plan is needed of course, it makes no sense to read 5 books in a week, but to continuously read something. For this reason it must not be a stressful thing. It should be easy. It must not be a struggle to find time to read, but it should be done on a continuous regular basis. Somehow this question can be similar to THIS ONE but I want to ask about books. How many if you read books at work for self improvement, not to tackle a specific task?

  I have set up a RAID5 device with three 2TB hard drives using mdadm. The device was successfully created, but I cannot seem to create a partition on the device. I'm fine with doing that, but my RAID device doesn't show up in the list of gparted devices. I suspect because this is a RAID and not a regular disk. I have already created a GPT partition table on the device. How can I add a partition to my device?

  Error occurs during startup of Ubuntu Installation. Sometimes I'll get to the Welcome screen just like this, the screen will just glitch out, or will simply freeze during the loading icon. nvidia GTS 250 Intel Core i7 920 9 GB Memory I was able to install 12.04.1, but after performing upgrade to 12.10 it get the same problem on startup; glitches in graphics, missing content etc. Also noticed after the upgrade, I'm no longer able to connect to internet; neither ethernet or wifi.

  In the last 4 months I've been able to manage a team and step away from the coding for a bit. I've been planning the system in full (both System Analysis and project managing, alongside action and data diagramming) writing the technical documentation, the code's architecture, keeping track of the other guys doing the actual coding, QA, bug reports and dealing with clients. I had to take two days' training on node.js just to see if it would be suitable for a project we were considering. Is there a name for this job? Project Manager and Systems Architect don't quite seem to have the same stuff, and IT manager seems way off. I only want to know so that I can get some qualification towards it and try to move into this kind of work full-time.

Those in favor of statically typed languages say that their compilers catch enough errors to make up for the additional complexity of type systems. But everything I read on these topics is based on rational argument, not on empirical data. Are there any empirical studies on what effects the different categories of programming languages have on defect rates or other quality metrics? (The answers to this question seem to indicate that there are no such studies, at least not for the dynamic vs. static debate)

  I'm giving a talk in April 2011 on "Developer English" and showing my non-developer audience, mostly English teachers, various diagrams to explain how developers see their industry etc. One of these diagrams is "Hot Technologies", basically, if you want to become a developer, what technologies should you learn to have the highest chance of (1) getting a job (2) making a good salary, and (3) work with the most exciting technology. This is a draft I made just to get some ideas out, basically C#, PHP, Java are where the bulk of the jobs are. Mobile development has a big future. JavaScript is becoming more and more important, and I want to list "minor technologies" such a Python, Ruby on Rails to the side, I assume e.g. that in general, there are a much smaller percentage of jobs in these technologies as in C#, PHP, Java. • Why my VPN doesn't work anymore?

  I have openvpn server running on debian lenny. There is only one client - and it is running Windows 7 64-bit. This has worked for few months without any problems. And now, let's say for the last 7 days, it doesn't work at all. I connect successfully from client to the server, but I can't access anything through VPN. I have set it up so that all internet traffic is routed through VPN, and now when I connect with the client, the client can't do anything on the net (open any webpage, ping google, anything ...). Can you help me to figure out what's wrong ? I don't know where to start. I've also tried to connect to another openvpn server (I've installed and configured openvpn on another server, and when I try to connect to it result is the same). • Junior software developer - How to understand web applications in depth?

  I am currently a junior developer in web applications and specifically in ASP.NET MVC technology. My problem is that the C# senior developer in the company has no experience with this technology and I try to learn without any guidance. I went through all tutorials (e.g music store), codeplex projects and also read Pro ASP.NET MVC 4. However, most of the examples are about CRUD and e-commerce applications. What I don't understand is how dependency injection fits in web applications (I have realized that is not only used for facilitating unit testing) or when I should use a custom model binder or how to model the business logic when there is already a database schema in place. I read the forum quite often and it would very helpful if some experienced developer could give me an insight about how to proceed. Do I need to read some books to understand the overall idea behind web applications? And what kind of application should I start building myself - I don't think it would be useful to create similar examples with the tutorials.

  My rendering code has always been OpenGL. I now need to support a platform that does not have OpenGL, so I have to add an abstraction layer that wraps OpenGL and Direct3D 9. I will support Direct3D 11 later. TL;DR: the differences between OpenGL and Direct3D cause redundancy for the programmer, and the data layout feels flaky. For now, my API works a bit like this. This is how a shader is created: Shader *shader = Shader::Create( " ... GLSL vertex shader ... ", " ... GLSL pixel shader ... ", " ... HLSL vertex shader ... ", " ... HLSL pixel shader ... "); ShaderAttrib a1 = shader->GetAttribLocation("Point", VertexUsage::Position, 0); ShaderAttrib a2 = shader->GetAttribLocation("TexCoord", VertexUsage::TexCoord, 0); ShaderAttrib a3 = shader->GetAttribLocation("Data", VertexUsage::TexCoord, 1); ShaderUniform u1 = shader->GetUniformLocation("WorldMatrix"); ShaderUniform u2 = shader->GetUniformLocation("Zoom"); There is already a problem here: once a Direct3D shader is compiled, there is no way to query an input attribute by its name; apparently only the semantics stay meaningful. This is why GetAttribLocation has these extra arguments, which get hidden in ShaderAttrib. Now this is how I create a vertex declaration and two vertex buffers: VertexDeclaration *decl = VertexDeclaration::Create( VertexStream<vec3,vec2>(VertexUsage::Position, 0, VertexUsage::TexCoord, 0), VertexStream<vec4>(VertexUsage::TexCoord, 1)); VertexBuffer *vb1 = new VertexBuffer(NUM * (sizeof(vec3) + sizeof(vec2)); VertexBuffer *vb2 = new VertexBuffer(NUM * sizeof(vec4)); Another problem: the information VertexUsage::Position, 0 is totally useless to the OpenGL/GLSL backend because it does not care about semantics. Once the vertex buffers have been filled with or pointed at data, this is the rendering code: shader->Bind(); shader->SetUniform(u1, GetWorldMatrix()); shader->SetUniform(u2, blah); decl->Bind(); decl->SetStream(vb1, a1, a2); decl->SetStream(vb2, a3); decl->DrawPrimitives(VertexPrimitive::Triangle, NUM / 3); decl->Unbind(); shader->Unbind(); You see that decl is a bit more than just a D3D-like vertex declaration, it kinda takes care of rendering as well. Does this make sense at all? What would be a cleaner design? Or a good source of inspiration?

• Why a 10 years old software still is so slow even today?

  I just noted this question due to a game (which happens to be Diablo 2), but the matter of fact is: why is my brand new mac book pro, made in 2009 with latest technology (tho it's the cheapest one) can't rival my computer which used to run this much faster back in 2000? Really, it was much faster on my AMD K6 450 back in those days, and I could even run two clients at same time with no slow down. I've always had the feeling this machine was slow, but this is a very odd way to attest it. Granted, the machine is smaller, runs on wifi and "boots" way faster thanks to sleep mode. But other than that, what have we evolved after all?! I'm pretty sure this shouldn't be graphical card's fault. Sure if I buy latest technology it will run fast, and probably most people here can confirm this and won't even understand my question. But the thing is, all the hardware is supposedly much faster and better than the stuff from 10 years ago. The software and operating system became more complex, but also more well refined. Now I'm trying a piece of software that is actually 10 years old and it's not getting any better results! Why?

Obviously it isn't and I'm going to explain why if needed but it can be seen: the question is unique, is the case/story of a young who have SPECIFIC experience with C++ , VB and Assembler and asking, knowing this specifications an answer (It is not a general question like "hey I'm young can I do the programmer??") Let me know your opinion! do you think this question should or should not be closed? And let's think about also the people not only the "data" and "cases covered" ... do you think this is important too? or is better to keep a place where people doesn't count?
