• Performance improvement of client server system

  I have a legacy client server system where the server maintains a record of some data stored in a sqlite database. The data is related to monitoring access patterns of files stored on the server. The client application is basically a remote viewer of the data. When the client is launched, it connects to the server and gets the data from the server to display in a grid view. The data gets updated in real time on the server and the view in the client automatically gets refreshed. There are two problems with the current implementation: When the database gets too big, it takes a lot of time to load the client. What are the best ways to deal with this. One option is to maintain a cache at the client side. How to best implement a cache ? How can the server maintain a diff so that it only sends the diff during the refresh cycle. There can be multiple clients and each client needs to display the latest data available on the server. The server is a windows service daemon. Both the client and the server are implemented in C#

• Django Interrupted system call when sending email

  Hi, Sometimes, when submitting a form (pretty much any form on my site that sends me an email), I get the following error: File "/usr/lib/python2.5/smtplib.py", line 603, in starttls (resp, reply) = self.docmd("STARTTLS") File "/usr/lib/python2.5/smtplib.py", line 378, in docmd return self.getreply() File "/usr/lib/python2.5/smtplib.py", line 352, in getreply line = self.file.readline() File "/usr/lib/python2.5/socket.py", line 381, in readline data = self._sock.recv(self._rbufsize) error: (4, 'Interrupted system call') My code is sending email via gmail. I am also using django contact-form which does the same thing. The problem doesn't always happen. It seems very random. At one point today it got so bad that it displayed the error every time I submitted a form. Restarting apache fixes the problem for one submission and then it does it again. I have checked the RAM and there is plenty available (about 350MB available). Can someone lead me in the right direction? What does this error mean? What can I do to prevent this. Thanks.

  I have a .htaccess file set up to define specific MIME types in directory root/a/b/, and all of the files are in the same directory. I have a php file that wants to serve those files, in directory root/c/, and needs to determine the content-type as defined by the .htaccess file. Is there any way to do this? PHP version is 5.1.6. mime_content_type returns text/plain, and I'd rather not try to parse the .htaccess file manually. I can move the file if necessary.

• Generic applet style system for publishing mathematics demonstrations?

  Anyone who's tried to study mathematics using online resources will have come across these Java applets that demonstrate a particular mathematical idea. Examples: http://www.math.ucla.edu/~tao/java/Mobius.html http://www.mathcs.org/java/programs/FFT/index.html I love the idea of this interactive approach because I believe it is very helpful in conveying mathematical principles. I'd like to create a system for visually designing and publishing these 'mathlets' such that they can be created by teachers with little programming experience. So in order to create this app, i'll need a GUI and a 'math engine'. I'll probably be working with .NET because thats what I know best and i'd like to start experimenting with F#. Silverlight appeals to me as a presentation framework for this project (im not worried about interoperability right now). So my questions are: does anything like this exist already in full form? are there any GUI frameworks for displaying mathematical objects such as graphs & equations? are there decent open source libraries that exposes a mathematical framework (Math.NET looks good, just wondering if there is anything else out there) is there any existing work on taking mathematical models/demos built with maple/matlab/octave/mathematica etc and publishing them to the web?

I found a blog post that recommends adding another custom field like "FileName" and then using a item reciever to populate the custom field with the value from the Name field but that seems cheesy. • Rapid Opening and Closing System.IO.StreamWriter in C#

  Suppose you have a file that you are programmatically logging information into with regards to a process. Kinda like your typical debug Console.WriteLine, but due to the nature of the code you're testing, you don't have a console to write onto so you have to write it somewhere like a file. My current program uses System.IO.StreamWriter for this task. My question is about the approach to using the StreamWriter. Is it better to open just one StreamWriter instance, do all of the writes, and close it when the entire process is done? Or is it a better idea to open a new StreamWriter instance to write a line into the file, then immediately close it, and do this for every time something needs to be written in? In the latter approach, this would probably be facilitated by a method that would do just that for a given message, rather than bloating the main process code with excessive amounts of lines. But having a method to aid in that implementation doesn't necessarily make it the better choice. Are there significant advantages to picking one approach or the other? Or are they functionally equivalent, leaving the choice on the shoulders of the programmer?

  I've been stuck at this for days now. I copied the exact codes from google api samples to upload files to Google Drive. I already added the necessary Google Api dlls. Or if anyone could suggest a better code for uploading files to Google Drive in a website which implements Server-Side Authorization. • C# Casting system.__comobject to class type

  I have an Excel Add-In that I'm currently trying to set up a unit test framework for. For the unit tests I've followed this guide: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/varsha/archive/2010/08/17/writing-automated-test-cases-for-vsto-application.aspx It seems to work fine, until I want to return a class object from my interface. Specifying the class object as the return type throws a "return argument has an invalid type" exception when calling the method. Changing the return type from the class to an object allows me to call the method and get the object, but now I'm unable to cast it as the class and use it as intended, getting this exception message when I try: > Unable to cast COM object of type 'System.__ComObject' to class type > 'anaplan.Utility.XYCoordinates'. Instances of types that represent COM > components cannot be cast to types that do not represent COM > components; however they can be cast to interfaces as long as the > underlying COM component supports QueryInterface calls for the IID of > the interface. I've retrieved the Type name using VisualBasic.Information.TypeName and it's showing it as the class I expect. Is there any way to get the comobject cast back to the class? Or another way to access the properties it has? Or am I just being a bit stupid here?

  For all of the following assume these: rails v3.0 ruby v1.9 resque We have 3 models: Product belongs_to :sku, belongs_to :category Sku has_many :products, belongs_to :category Category has_many :products, has_many :skus When we update the product (let's say we disable it) we need to have some things happen to the relevant sku and category. The same is true for when a sku is updated. The proper way of achieving this is have an after_save on each model that triggers the other models' update events. example: products.each(&:disable!) # after_save triggers self.sku.products_updated # and self.category.products_updated (self is product) Now if we have 5000 products we are in for a treat. The same category might get updated hundreds of times and hog the database while doing so. We also have a nice queueing system, so the more realisting way of updating products would be products.each(&:queue_disable!) which would simply toss 5000 new tasks to the working queue. The problem of 5000 category updates still exists though. Is there a way to avoid all those updates on the db? How can we concatenate all the category.products_updated for each category in the queue?

  I am attempting to launch a specific form depending on the selected node of a treeview on the doubleclick event. The code I need to use to launch the form is a little bulky becuase I have to ensure that the form is not disposed, and that the form is not already open, before launching a new instance. I'd like to have all of this checking happen in one place at the end of the function, which means that I have to be able to pass the right form type to the code at the end. I'm trying to do this with a System.Type, but that doesn't seem to be working. Could someone point me in the right direction, please? • Need advice - Developing a flexible documentation system, heavily focused on localization

  I've been charged with building a documentation system/platform. Here's a short list of the major requirements: Easily localized : This will need to support a dozen or so languages out of the gate. (the ability for non-technical personnel to add/update translations would be a big plus, though not 100% required) Flexibility in output formats : At the bare minimum, I need to output the documents (either as a whole or in selected chunks) as PDF and HTML. Bonus points for native formats like Windows Help Files. Managed and deployed via an intuitive user interface (web, ideally). I'm wondering if you folks know of any systems out there that support this type of thing already? I'm not averse to writing this from scratch, but I'd rather not reinvent the wheel if I can help it. The two major candidates I've come across thus far are DocBook and reST. The former seems to have garnered a reputation for, well, sucking. I'm unfamiliar with either, but I'm told that reST would get me a good portion of the way there. Any other suggestions? Would I be better off building this from scratch?

• Build system for multi-language project

  I am getting ready to embark on a project mainly for experimenting with languages, but also with a hint of usefulness. It will consist of a server-application, written in Erlang, and client-libraries in a number of languages. Initially I will want to write clients in Java, Ruby and Python. The actual protocol for communication will be Thrift. I'm looking for a build system that will allow me to build the server and all the client libraries in one go, running unit-tests in each language, then packaging up a releasable artifact of some sort in whatever way is the "standard" for each language. That means a Jar for Java, a RubyGem and a distribute/setuptools tarball for Python. Erlang probably has something too, but I'm not yet familiar with that. It should also be able to run the Thrift compiler to generate the various Thrift-stubs in each language. On the pad at the start is Maven. I'm fairly certain Maven can do all I need, but I fear it's too Java-centric, and leaves me with a ton of work for every new language I need to add.

The download part is all good, however, we can not open up the zipped files after downloading. • Syncing objects between two devices with different system times

  Hi there. I'm syncing objects between two devices. Objects have a lastModified property. If both devices have modified an object, then during the next sync the version of the object with the most recent lastModified is chosen on both devices. So we don't do fine-grained merging, only 'most recent version' merging. The problem is this. When one device receives a list of changed objects it can't reliably compare the lastModified of received objects to its own because the system times on the two devices may be different. I considered having each device send its current date/time during the sync. Then each calculates the difference between the remote time and the local time to compare the dates properly. But if there is lag between sending a date and the remote device receiving it, this causes incorrect comparisons with objects that were modified at the same time (or very close together in time). i.e. both devices think the remote object is newer and they end up with different objects. I hope I have explained this clearly enough. There must be a common solution to this kind of problem but my brain isn't coming up with anything. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

  Hi Guys, There are so many options out there for integration. At the moment I have comments that are posted on my articles, where a user types in their name and the comment. This is then sent to a moderation queue and displayed when approved. I want to acheive this: Comment with facebook login (ie facebook account listed as the name w/ avatar) Comment with twitter login (ie twitter account name listed as the name w/ avatar) Push comment from my website to twitter and to facebook I could go down a few paths as far as I know: Integrate with XFBML, which I don't like because I find it annoying to setup and messy. Integrate facebook comments system, although this can't push to twitter, or allow me to moderate comments from my backend (as far as I can tell i'd have to login under the facebook login for the dev account to moderate the comment) Find a php class that does open auth and integrate with both face book and twitter at once find a pre-created php class Anyone have a solution that will bias: a. easy to integrate b. lightweight c. is free Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

• How to split up input from System.in

  Alright so I'm working on something where I take input from System.in; the first line is an int (n) representing the size of a matrix. I then have to pass each matrix along with the size at the top as a BufferedReader to a method which adds the numbers to a 2D array. I'm just a little unsure on how to split the input up and send it to the method. Would making a new BufferedReader using skip() and specifying a size each time work? The biggest problem I seem to be running into is reading the size but then the size being excluded as it has already been read. Cheers

• Why does switching users completely hang my system every time?

  I have a fresh install of 11.04 64bit, with 2 administrator accounts and 4 normal accounts. The 4 normal accounts (the kids' accounts) don't have passwords, they can login simply by clicking on their names. When any of the users -- either admin or normal -- tries to switch to another account by clicking in the top-right corner of the screen and selecting another user, the screen goes black and the entire system locks up. Even CTRL+ALT+F1 through F7 does nothing. This is reproducible 100% of the time on this system. I can ssh into the box when the console locks up, and by running top, I see that Xorg is consuming about 100% of the CPU.   I'm posting this here since programmers write viruses, and AV software. They also have the best knowledge of heuristics and how AV systems work (cloaking etc). Currently the EICAR test file is only good for testing the presence of an AV solution, but it doesn't check for engine file or DAT file up-to-dateness. In other words, why do a functional test of a system that could have definition files that are more than 10 years old. With the increase of zero day threats it doesn't make much sense to functionally test your system using EICAR. That being said, I think EICAR needs to be updated/modified to be effective test that works in conjunction with an AV management solution. This question is about real world testing, without using live viruses... which is the intent of the original EICAR. That being said I'm proposing a new EICAR file format with the appendage of an XML blob that will conditionally cause the Antivirus engine to respond. Also there is a passcode that will protect the usage of EICAR to the system administrator. Multi-Site Capabilities: significant enhancements to the Commerce Platform multi-site architecture that allows business users to quickly launch and manage multiple sites on the same cluster and share data, carts, and other components. First introduced in 2010, with this latest release business users can now partition or share customer profiles, control users’ site-based access, and manage personalization assets using site groups. Internationalization: continued language support and enhancements for business user tools as well and search and navigation. Guided Search now supports 35 total languages with 11 new languages (including Danish, Arabic, Norwegian, Serbian Cyrillic) added in this release. Commerce Platform tools now include localized support for 17 locales with 4 new languages (Danish, Portuguese (European), Finnish, and Thai). No development or customization is required in order for business users to use the applications in any of these supported languages. Business Tool Experience: valuable new Commerce Merchandising features include a new workflow for making emergency changes quickly and increased visibility into promotions rules and qualifications in preview mode. Oracle Commerce business tools continue to become more and more feature rich to provide intuitive, easy- to-use (yet powerful) capabilities to allow business users to manage content and the shopping experience. Commerce & Experience Unification: demonstrable unification of commerce and customer experience capabilities include – productized cartridges that provide supported integration between the Commerce Platform and Experience Management tools, cross-channel returns, Oracle Service Cloud integration, and integrated iPad application. • Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g is Here!

If you missed it, you may still watch it via our on demand webcast, which is being produced and will be posted very shortly. 11gR1 is a major release of Oracle Enterprise Manager, and as one would expect from a big release, there are many new capabilities that appeal to a broad set of audience. Before going into the laundry list of new features, let's talk about the key themes for this release to put things in perspective. First, this release is about Business Driven Application Management. The traditional paradigm of component centric systems management simply cannot satisfy the management needs of modern distributed applications, as they do not provide adequate visibility of whether these applications are truly meeting the service level expectations of the business users. Business Driven Application Management helps IT manage applications according to the needs of the business users so that valuable IT resources can be better focused to help deliver better business results. To support Business Driven Application Management, 11gR1 builds on the work that we started in 10g to provide better support for user experience management. This capability helps IT better understand how users use applications and the experience that the applications provide so that IT can take actions to help end users get their work done more effectively. In addition, this release also delivers improved business transaction management capabilities to make it faster and easier to understand and troubleshoot transaction problems that impact end user experience. Second, this release includes strengthened Integrated Application-to-Disk Management. Every component of an application environment, from the application logic to the application server, to database, host machines and storage devices, etc... can affect end user experience. After user experience improvement needs are identified, IT needs tools that can be used do deep dive diagnostics for each of the application environment component, analyze configurations and deploy changes. Enterprise Manager 11gR1 extends coverage of key application environment components to include full support for Oracle Database 11gR2, Exadata V2, and Fusion Middleware 11g. For composite and Java application management, two key pieces of technologies, JVM Diagnostic and Composite Application Monitoring and Modeler, are now fully integrated into Enterprise Manager so there is no need to install and maintain separate tools. In addition, we have delivered the first set of integration between Enterprise Manager Grid Control and Enterprise Manager Ops Center so that hardware level events can be centrally monitored via Grid Control. Finally, this release delivers Integrated Systems Management and Support for customers of Oracle technologies. Traditionally, systems management tools and tech support were separate silos. When problems occur, administrators used internally deployed tools to try to solve the problems themselves. If they couldn't fix the problems, then they would use some sort of support website to get help from the vendor's support staff. Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g integrates problem diagnostic and remediation workflow. Administrators can use Oracle Enterprise Manager's various diagnostic tools to begin the troubleshooting process. They can also use the integrated access to My Oracle Support to look up solutions and download software patches. If further help is needed, administrators can open service requests from right within Oracle Enterprise Manager and track status update. Oracle's support staff, using Enterprise Manager's configuration management capabilities, can collect important configuration information about customer environments in order to expedite problem resolution. This tight integration between Oracle Enterprise Manager and My Oracle Support helps Oracle customers achieve a Superior Ownership Experience for their Oracle products. So there you have it. • Why No android.content.SyncAdapter meta-data registering sync-adapter?

  I am following the SampleSyncAdapter and upon startup, it appears that my SyncAdapter is not configured correctly. It reports an error trying to load its meta-data. How can I isolate the problem? You can see the other accounts in the system that register correctly.
