• FilteredTextBox - allow non-english characters

  Hey, I'm using the AJAX FilteredTextBoxExtender, but I'm not sure how to let it accept non-english characters such as é and á. I know I can manually add these in the InvalidChar's property, but is there an easier, more practical way? When using Regex, the [\w] seems to let it through, but I'm guessing the FTBE is using another system to check for valid characters? (I know I can use the regex validator, but for UI experience, I'd like a real time input check) Thanks for any suggestions

• Distributing a custom command line tool to enterprise servers

  I've been tasked with building a command line tool that we will be providing to our enterprise customers so that they can use the API to upload data to our platform. The API works with standard cURL requests, so I can do most of the basic functionality with simple bash scripting, although I would like to provide something that is solid and really makes it easy for them to use and I don't know what I don't know. It's been a good 8 years since I've really done any serious sysadmin work. Most of the good tools I use these days are written in Ruby or Python and have a standard distribution process (Gems, for example). However, I know rhel and other platforms have their own package managers. Finally, the question: In today's day and age, what language / distribution method should I consider in order to cover the widest range of platforms without having to build completely different versions for each platform? I'd also love any general feedback you have about building similar projects, or links to projects that you think do a good job of this now and have open source code that I could read. • Scope of Connection Object for a Website using Connection Pooling (Local or Instance)

  For a web application with connection polling enabled, is it better to work with a locally scoped connection object or instance scoped connection object. I know there is probably not a big performance improvement between the two (because of the pooling) but would you say that one follows a better pattern than the other.   If in my C# application, I am creating a child process that can either terminate normally, or start misbehaving, in which case I terminate it with a call to Process.Kill().However, I would like to know if the process has exited normally.I know I can get the error code of a terminated process, but what would be a normal exit code and what would signify that the process was killed?

• Network communication across two private network

  Hi All, I am trying to implement a peer to peer communication .. I use sockets for communication between them. I want to know if there are any ways i can use the same sort of communication when the two peers are behind two private Networks (They dont know each others public ip address.) I can think of a shared buffer in a well known location as a means of communication. But is there some other way to get this done?

I need to develop a couple of windows explorer extensions, and apparently managed code is not recommended by Microsoft at least for some of these tasks. • How to configure amavisd-new for only scanning on particular senders/servers?

  I'd like to know how to configure amavisd-new to only scan for Spam on particular clients (IPs, CIDRs or hostnames) or alternatively sender's email domain. I know that it is possible to do it on a recipient's mail address but not on how to do it for the sender's mail address. It is even possible to do it on a recipient's IP address with policy banks. But my approach should be to be independent of recipient and only relay on the sender. What I want to accomplish is to only scan mails originating from Yahoo, Google, Hotmail and the other big senders. So it is easier to configure which senders should be observed than the ones that shouldn't. I known that it is easier to achieve on the MTA side, but that is not part of the question because I already go a solution on the MTA side. I want to do it on amavisd-new. And it doesn't help to know how to put senders on a whitelist, as this still means that the mail goes through all the scanning but then gets a high negative score. The mail shouldn't be scanned at all unless sent by the big players. So which parameters in amavisd-new is the right one to enable scanning for particular senders and only for these?

• OLAP Web Visualization and Reporting Recommendations

  I am preparing an offer for a customer. They proide weekly data to different organizations. There is huge amount data suits OLAP that needed to be visualized with charts and pivot tables on web and custom reports will be built by non-it persons (an easy gui). They will enter a date range, location which data columns to be included and generate report and optionally export the data to Excel. They currently prepare reports with MS Excel with Pivot Tables and but they need a better online tool now to show data to their customers. Tables are huge and need of drill-down functionality. My current knowledge Spring, Flex, MySql, Linux. I have some knowledge of PostgreSQL and MSSQL and Windows. What is the easiest way of doing this project. Do you think that SSRP (haven't tried yet) and ASP.NET better suits for this kind of job. Actually I prefer open source solutions. Flex have OLAP Data Grid control which do aggregation on client side. JasperServer seems promising but it seems I need enterprise version (multiple organizations and ad hoc queries). What about Modrian + Flex + PostgreSQL solution? Any previous experience will be appreciated. Yes I am confused with options.

• WinForms Control.BeginInvoke asynchronous callback

  I have a number of Janus grid controls that need to be populated on an application startup. I'd like to load these grids on different threads to speed startup time and the time it takes to refresh these grids. Each grid is on a seperate tab. Ideally I'd like to use Control.BeginInvoke on each grid and on the grid load completing the tabs will become enabled. I know with Delegates you can do a Asynchronous callback when using BeginInvoke, so I could enable the tabs in the asynchronous callback, however when using Control.BeginInvoke this is not possible. Is there a way to do asynchronous callbacks using Control.BeginInvoke or possibly a better solution?   Xen and Virtualbox etc both support a range of different virtual machine image formats. These are: vmdk, vdi, qcow & qcow2, hdd & vhd. Without any bias toward a particular product, I'm wanting to know what are the advantages and disadvantages of the various formats both from a features perspective, robustness and speed? One piece of info I discovered in a forum post was this: "The major difference is that VDI uses relatively large blocks (1MB) when growing an image, and thus has less overhead for block pointers etc. but isn't ultimately space efficient in the sense that if a single byte is non-zero in such a 1MB block the entire space is used. VMDK in contrast uses 64K blocks, and thus has more management overhead and generally a bit less disk space consumption What offsets this is that VDI is more efficient when it comes to snapshots." You might be thinking, I want to know this because I want to know which format to choose? Not exactly, I'm developing some software which utilises these formats and want to support one or more of them. Simplicity, large disks and ease of development are my main drivers.

• Migrating to Amazon AWS etc: What key statistics/questions should be analyzed and asked?

  I searched SOverflow pretty extensively for something similar to this set of questions. BACKGROUND: We are a growing 'big(ish)' data chemical data company that are outgrowing our lab and our dedicated production workhorses. Make no mistake, we need to do some serious query optimization. Our data (It comes from a certain govt. agency so the schema and lack of indexing is atrocious). So yes, I know, AWS or EC2 is not a silver bullet in the face of spending time to maybe rework your queries/code entirely 'out of the box'. With that said I would appreciate any input on the following questions: We produce on CentOS and lab on Ubuntu LTS which I prefer especially with their growing cloud / AWS integration. If we are mysql centric, and our biggest problem is these big cartesian products that produce slow queries, should we roll out what we know after more optimization with respect to Ubuntu/mySQL with the added Amazon horsepower? Or is there some merit to the NoSQL and other technologies they offer? What are the key metrics I need to gather from apache and mysql other than like: Disk I/O operations, Data up/down avgs and trends and special high usage periods/scenarios? I've reviewed AWS/EC2 fine print, but want 2nd opinions. What other services aside from the basic web/database have proven valuable to you? I know nothing of Hadoop or many other technologies they offer, echoing my prev. question, do you sometimes find it worth it (Initially having it be a gamble aside from basic homework) to dive/break into a whole new environment and try to/or end up finding a way of more efficiently producing your data/site product? Anything I should watch out for in projecting costs, or any other general advice when working with AWS folks from anyone else where your company is very niche and very very technical (Scientifically - or anybody for that matter)? • Can't connect to Sql Server 2008 named instance

  I just installed Sql 2008 Express on a new server running Windows Server 2008. I know Sql is working properly, because I can connect to the db fine locally, on the server. I cannot connect to it from a client machine though, neither by IP address nor by machine name (iporname\instance). I know I have the correct IP address, because I am RDCing into the server to perform all this configuration and setup, and if I ping the server name, it is resolving to the correct IP address as well. On the server, I have set up an inbound firewall exception allowing all traffic on any port on any protocol to sqlservr.exe. In SSMS, in server > Properties > Connections Allow remote connections to this server is enabled. In Sql Server Configuration Manager, TCP/IP is enabled in both the Protocols for <instance> and the Client Protocols sections. I looked in the Windows logs, but don't see anything about connections being denied or dropped. As far as I can see, I have everything set right, but cannot connect from a client machine. The client CAN connect to other Sql 2008 Express servers okay, so I know the client configuration is correct. Any ideas where else I can look for info of what/where/how this connection is dropping, greatly apprecaited! The error being returned by the client is: **TITLE: Connect to Server** Cannot connect to [MY.IP.ADD.RSS]\[MYINSTNAME]. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

• Inbound SIP calls through Cisco 881 NAT hang up after a few seconds

  I've recently moved to a Cisco 881 router for my WAN link. I was previously using a Cisco Linksys WAG320N as my modem/router/WiFi AP/NAT firewall. The WAG320N is now running in bridged mode, so it's simply acting as a modem with one of it's LAN ports connected to FE4 WAN on my Cisco 881. The Cisco 881 get's a DHCP provided IP from my ISP. My LAN is part of default Vlan 1 (192.168.1.0/24). General internet connectivity is working great, I've managed to setup static NAT rules for my HTTP/HTTPS/SMTP/etc. services which are running on my LAN. I don't know whether it's worth mentioning that I've opted to use NVI NAT (ip nat enable as opposed to the traditional ip nat outside/ip nat inside) setup. My reason for this is that NVI allows NAT loopback from my LAN to the WAN IP and back in to the necessary server on the LAN. I run an Asterisk 1.8 PBX on my LAN, which connects to a SIP provider on the internet. Both inbound and outbound calls through the old setup (WAG320N providing routing/NAT) worked fine. However, since moving to the Cisco 881, inbound calls drop after around 10 seconds, whereas outbound calls work fine. The following message is logged on my Asterisk PBX: [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3641 retrans_pkt: Retransmission timeout reached on transmission [email protected] for seqno 1 (Critical Response) -- See https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions Packet timed out after 6528ms with no response [Dec 9 15:27:45] WARNING[27734]: chan_sip.c:3670 retrans_pkt: Hanging up call [email protected] - no reply to our critical packet (see https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions). (I know that this is quite a common issue - I've spend the best part of 2 days solid on this, trawling Google.) I've done as I am told and checked https://wiki.asterisk.org/wiki/display/AST/SIP+Retransmissions. Referring to the section "Other SIP requests" in the page linked above, I believe that the hangup to be caused by the ACK from my SIP provider not being passed back through NAT to Asterisk on my PBX. I tried to ascertain this by dumping the packets on my WAN interface on the 881. I managed to obtain a PCAP dump of packets in/out of my WAN interface. Here's an example of an ACK being reveived by the router from my provider: 689 21.219999 193.x.x.x 188.x.x.x SIP 502 Request: ACK sip:[email protected] | However a SIP trace on the Asterisk server show's that there are no ACK's received in response to the 200 OK from my PBX: http://pastebin.com/wwHpLPPz In the past, I have been strongly advised to disable any sort of SIP ALGs on routers and/or firewalls and the many posts regarding this issue on the internet seem to support this. However, I believe on Cisco IOS, the config command to disable SIP ALG is no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 however, this doesn't appear to help the situation. To confirm that config setting is set: Router1#show running-config | include sip no ip nat service sip udp port 5060 Another interesting twist: for a short period of time, I tried another provider. Luckily, my trial account with them is still available, so I reverted my Asterisk config back to the revision before I integrated with my current provider. I then dialled in to the DDI associated with the trial trunk and the call didn't get hung up and I didn't get the error above! To me, this points at the provider, however I know, like all providers do, will say "There's no issues with our SIP proxies - it's your firewall." I'm tempted to agree with this, as this issue was not apparent with the old WAG320N router when it was doing the NAT'ing. I'm sure you'll want to see my running-config too: ! ! • Force scope bar below UISearchBar

  I have a UISearchBar and UISearchDisplayController, everything works great but my scope selector displays beside the text field instead of below it. I know that this is the expected action when the device is in landscape, but since I have the UISearchBar in the master view of a UISplitViewController it ends up looking like this http://cl.ly/BN9 Is there any way to force the scope bar to display below the text field in all interface orientations (I know that this works nicely in Mail.app on the iPad, so its possibly, but who knows if Apple decided to hide the option to do so)

• Source Control Manager Backend

  Hi Friends, What do you think is a better approach for Source Control Manager Backend. I am weighing File system vs Hosted Subversion service. Hosted Subversion-- (My company already has another group taking care of this) Advantages: * Zero maintenance on our end * Auto-backup and recovery * Reliability by auto-backup and file redundancy. * File history view in built, file merge, file diff On the other hand, while File system does not have the featured mentioned above but is much more simpler. Moreover, if files are hosted on Linux machine, which is backed up, it takes care of file system crash issues. Subversion will need working copies, which are going to be on this same Linux machine, and hence the need to not have an extra layer. Folks, I am looking for stronger reasons why I should take Subversion instead of keeping thing simple and going with File System. Let me know your opinions. Very thanks in advance, Gabriel. PS: I have explored few Commercial Source Manager, and have decide to go this route as it better suits our need.
