• What encoding to use for exporting to CSV?

  I'm developing a java app that exports data to CSV files, intended to be opened in Excel by end users. We just noticed that the export function uses Java's platform default encoding. This causes umlaut characters to be lost and unit test to fail on the build server (which is configured to have US-ASCII as its platform default encoding exactly to catch such potential problems). The question is: which would be the best encoding to use? How does Excel determine what encoding to use? Does it use something platform-specific that presumably matches Java's platform default? I'm currently leaning towards hardcoding Cp1252 - that should cover the target machines (the deployment environment is actually specified) and would fix the test problem. From googling around, Excel does not seem to handle UTF-8 well, so that's out, and sticking to the platform default encoding would require some sort of workaround hack for the tests.

• Best way to correct garbled data caused by false encoding

  Hi all, I have a set of data that contains garbled text fields because of encoding errors during many import/exports from one database to another. Most of the errors were caused by converting UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1. Strangely enough, the errors are not consistent: the word 'München' appears as 'München' in some place and as 'MÃœnchen'. Is there a trick in SQL server to correct this kind of crap? The first thing that I can think of is to exploit the COLLATE clause, so that ü is interpreted as ü, but I don't exactly know how. If it isn't possible to make it in the DB level, do you know any tool that helps for a bulk correction? (no manual find/replace tool, but a tool that guesses the garbled text somehow and correct them)

Why is this happening, and how do I resolve it? On a side not, why is type: required to be POST instead of a GET? In the end I just want to pass a string value I want to look up in a DB and retrieving some json data.

• Making Swedish characters show properly in Windows Command Prompt using Python in Notepad++

I have set up Notepad++ to open the Python script in the command prompt when I press F8 but all Swedish characters looks messed up when opening in CMD but perfectly fine in e.g IDLE. This simple example code: #!/usr/bin/env python #-*- coding: UTF-8 -*- print "åäö" Looks like this. As you can see the output of the batch file I use to open Python in cmd below shows the characters correctly but not the Python script above it. How do I fix this? • Is it possible to dither a gradient drawable?

  I'm using the following drawable: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:shape="rectangle" > <gradient android:startColor="@color/content_background_gradient_start" android:endColor="@color/content_background_gradient_end" android:angle="270" /> </shape> The problem is that I get severe banding on hdpi devices (like the Nexus One and Droid) since the gradient goes from the top of the screen to the very bottom. According to http://idunnolol.com/android/drawables.html#shape_gradient there isn't a "dither" attribute for a gradient. Is there anything I can do to smooth the gradient?

• Regular expressions in a Python find-and-replace script?

• <embed> in HTML loaded by Webview Broken in Sense UI

  I have a WebView that loads HTML that contains an <embed>. When loading in stock android (G1, NexusOne, Ion, etc) it looks fine and can be clicked on to watch it in the YouTube app. But when loading it using either the HTC EVO or Incredible (both Sense UI phones ) the space where the content should be is completely blank. Try this code below... Any ideas? I'm stumped. Certainly looks like an HTC Sense bug? • Zend + Wamp = Cant use curl/fput for a url locally

• Help with proper character encoding.

  I have a HTML form that is sometimes submitted with accented characters: à, è, ì, ò, ù I have a PHP script that exports these form submissions into CSV format, when I look at the CSV format in a text editor (vim or notepad for example) the characters look fine, but when opened with Open Office or Word, I get some funky results: ????? I am also passing these submission to salesforce and am getting an error: "The entity "Atilde" was referenced, but not declared." What can I do to ensure portability of my CSV file? What's the proper way to handle the encoding? My HTML file is content-type is set as: Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Data is being stored in MySQL as latin1_swedish_ci collation.

• With XSLT, how can I use this if-test with an array, when search element is returned by a template call inside the for loop?

  I think this simple example might ask the question a lot more clearly. I have an input file with multiple products. There are 10 types of product (2 product IDs is fine enough for this example), but the input will have 200 products, and I only want to output the info for the first product of each type. (Output info for the lowest priced one, so the first one will be the lowest price because I sort by Price first.) So I want to read in each product, but only output the product's info if I haven't already output a product with that same ID. I couldn't figure out how to get the processID template to return a value that I need to do my if-check on, that uses parameters from inside the for-each Product loop -then properly close the if tag in the right place so it won't output the open Product tag unless it passes the if test. • Java BufferedReader behavior in CSV vs TXT file

  If i try to read a CSV file called csv_file.csv. The problem is that when i read lines with BufferedReader.readLine() it skips the first line with months. But when i rename the file to csv_file.txt it reads it allright and it's not skipping the first line. Is there an undocumented "feature" of BufferedReader that i'm not aware? • Can anyone tell me why my XML writer is not writing attributes?

  I am writing a parsing tool to help me clean up a large VC++ project before I make .net bindings for it. I am using an XML writer to read an xml file and write out each element to a new file. If an element with a certain name is found, then it executes some code and writes an output value into the elements value. So far it is almost working, except for one thing: It is not copying the attributes. Can anyone tell me why this is happening? • Help with understanding why UAC dialog pops up on Win7 for our application

  We have a C++ unmanaged application that appears to cause a UAC prompt. It seems to happen on Win7 and NOT on Vista Unfortunately the UAC dlg is system modal so I can't attach a debugger to check in the code where it is, and running under msdev (we're using 2008) runs in elevated mode. We put a message box at the start of our program/winmain but it doesn't even get that far, so apparently this is in the startup code. What can cause a UAC notification so early and what other things can I do to track down the cause? EDIT Apparently the manifest is an important issue here, but it seems not to be helping me - or perhaps I am not configuring the manifest file correctly. Can someone provide a sample manifest? Also, does the linker/UAC magic figure out that the program "might" write to the registry and set its UAC requirements based on that? There are code paths that might trigger UAC, but we are not even at that point when the UAC dlg comes up. An additional oddity is that this does not seem to happen on Vista with UAC turned on. (we set that in the installer I found out because some sound drivers don't work correctly on win7)

I’ve used JavaScript ~2 years ago (just a little), so I don’t really know how to write the exact code. I’ve found something on the internet, but it doesn’t do what I want. I want to have the following: The user can check the RadioButtons. When the user clicks the Button, the JavaScript function should return all the checked radio buttons (I only need to know which RadioButton is checked). Since I know the name of the RadioButtons in my Windows 8 App, I can do the following: var object = WebView.InvokeScript("JavaScriptFunctionNAME", NameOfRadiobutton); So the WebView invokes the script and should get as a return the VALUE of the RadioButton, which is checked. “JavaScriptFunctionNAME” = name of the function in Javascript NameOfRadiobutton = the name of the RadioButton as a parameter (for example “frage1”). Currently I’m returning the value of the radiobutton, which is checked in the RadioGroup “frage1”. How can I check every RadioButton by it’s parameter? By this I mean I have a parameter “frage1” and return the value of the checked RadioButton. After this, I call the function again with the parameter “frage2” and return the checked RadioButtons value. Could anyone help me out with the JavaScript-function?
