• Why did Windows XP disappear from the menu on my triple-boot system?

  I have WIN XP installed, followed by Mint 12 and finally Ubuntu 12.04. I did a sudo grub-install /dev/sda followed by sudo update-grub. On rebooting all was fine and the boot menu had Ubuntu 12.04, mem, windows, and finally Mint 12. All was fine till now. Today wanted to boot into windows BUT found win XP missing from Boot Menu. Tried sudo grub-install /dev/sda followed by sudo update-grub BUT win XP is NOT FOUND. Can someone help with what to do to restore WIN XP in Boot Menu, Please?

• Are email addresses mandatory for Windows 8 login names?

  I've got a computer running Windows 8 and in the user accounts I can see four accounts (they're in french, here's a rough translation): [email protected] / administrator Veronique YYY / [email protected] ASP.NET Machine Account / local account guest account / the guest account is desactivated I've got several questions but they're all related to email addresses and login names / accounts. Are email addresses mandatory for Windows 8 login names? Can you mix live and non-live user accounts on a Windows 8 system? Is it possible to have a live Windows 8 user account which is not using a @live.xx email address? Is it possible to have a non-live Windows 8 user account which is using a @live.xx email address? If the gmail.com email address of the admin is not a live Windows 8 account, does this mean I can create a "fake" email and use that as the email of a new Windows 8 account? Basically I don't understand very well why there are email addresses displayed on the login screen and why there are both @live.xx and @gmail.com email addresses on the same system and answer to the questions I asked above may help me understand a bit better what is going on (I'm coming from a Linux / OS X background. I literally haven't used Windows in more than a decade).

After the a while I started thinking it really hard, and if you go really in depth this is a very complex and interesting question to ask. YOu can even ask yourself if (heavy) internet (social) users are an subculture and programmers a culture within. I think it might be an interesting discussion, hope you like it! NOTE: I linked the wiki article because it might be a good baseline, maybe you can base you answer on Ken Gelder´s proposal to distinguish subcultures.   I wanted to ask your opinion on anti-depressants, since I took them daily for 3 years now, but I can't be sure if I'm less perfomant with them or without, since I never withdrawed. I'm still at school at the age of 25, still having some motivation problems (for example I can't get used to do something at school if I don't think it will teach me something), but I'm quite motivated to work in the video-game field, since I have some personnal projects in mind. I know C++ programming etc, I'm still learning techniques, but do you think I should try more to do my project instead of just following the work I'm assigned to ? Have you had experience with depression or anti-depressants ? How did it affect your work ? Do you think that being depressed or half-depressed can improve creativity ?

• How to make Microsoft JVM work on Windows 7?

  I am struggling with the following problem. I cannot install MS JVM 3810 properly on Windows 7. When I start Interner Explorer 8 without starting any java 1.1 programs choosing Java custom settings under Internet options causes the crash of the browser. I have some Java 1.1 programs that work well in Internet Explorer 8 on Windows XP after the installation of MS JVM 3810. I know that it is not advised to use this old JVM but it is not a short-term option to port the programs in newer Java since it contains 3rd party components. Complete rewrite is a long-term plan. Strangely jview and appletviewer (jview /a) works from a console so the MS JVM 3810 is not completely busted just IE 8 does not like it. The problem with the appletviewer is that it cannot connect to the server even if both signed and unsigned content in Java custom settings have been set to Enable all. (Since Java custom settings was unreachable due to the crash the modifications - including My computer - were performed through the registry and pre-checked to behave correctly on Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8.) If jview was working then I could at least think of a workaround. Is there a way to configure MS JVM or jview properly on Windows 7? Another options would be: Checking Internet Explorer 9 Beta. Using virtualbox and Windows XP older IE in it. Delaying Windows 7 upgrade. ... Update Finally we have modified all the programs to work parallelly as applet and application as well. This way the programs can still be used from browser on older Windows versions. On Windows 7 the applications are started from the desktop. Installation to all user machine can easily be solved since they already have a large common application drive. The code update is fortunately only a few lines of modification: including a main method in the applet class. Furthermore instead of the starting html page a bat file is used to set the classpath before the startup with jview.

• How do I find out on which partition is my Windows?

  I have fully functional Windows and Ubuntu that is broken (I accidentaly broke it) and want to do reinstall. With Live-CD, I can see: 3 NTFS partitions, one ext4 and one unknown. How do I find out which partitions belong to Windows? I thought that I might delete everything that wasn't NTFS, but I was afraid. Now I am using: Install Ubuntu alongside them option, but I guess that this will leave my broken Ubuntu untouched. So, again, I need to know which partitions to merge (perhaps add partitions of broken Ubuntu to new Ubuntu?). Please, how can I learn how my system is divided? Thanks a lot.

• Programming Language Family Tree?

  As a man interested in programming, I must ask if there is a cataloged hierarchy of languages. I'd like to learn to actually understand what's happening- that is to say, I don't want to use a compiler until I understand what a compiler does and how to make my own. I really do want to start from total scratch. I'm told that means "machine code"? I don't know. What I do know is that "C++" is not the start. I'm not interested in learning that until I can actually break software down to its very base and see how the pieces go together.

  Recently I have been tasked with more High level planning assignments due to the lead developer of my team leaving. I hate long term planning. My brain just doesn't naturally seem wired for it and I am not interested enough in it to spend the time to learn it (it is hard enough to keep up with the programming side of the picture). Can I still be a good programmer without being a high level planer too? Are you expected to be good at planning out the entire product and picking a date, as part of being a senior programmer. Is it possible to be a good programmer and not a high level planner?

• Detecting the Loopback Adapter

  What is the best way for detecting whether a network interface is a loopback adapter? The windows API's GetAdaptersInfo and GetAdaptersAddresses state in the documentation that they will return whether an interface is a loopback through the Type (MIB_IF_TYPE_LOOPBACK) but neither of these do for the Microsoft Loopback Adapter at least, it is reported as a standard ethernet interface. I could try checking for the default MAC of the Loopback adapter but this can be easily spoofed. I could check for the name "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" in the description but this may have translation issues and may lead to other issues. IP addresses can also be changed. What is the most robust method for doing this?

  I need to install Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player to check an URL for testing purpose. Could someone post me the exact steps to acheive this task? Note: I have already tried installing IE in Ubuntu 10.10 and later versions (12.04) with Wine. It works fine. But I don't get success installing Windows Media Player. Hope someone will solve my problem. It will be great if someone gives me a neat solution for installing IE and WMP in Ubuntu (10.10 or later).

• Should I go with Android or Try Windows Phone 7?

  I already know C# and am familiar with XNA. So it would make sense to develop for the Windows Phone 7, but would it be worth while to learn Java, get familiar with Android, and instead develop for Android devices? Android has been around longer so it would probably have a larger user base. Is it really worth it to try to develop for one of the more popular mobile platforms. (Windows Phone 7 has been out for like a month?) I haven't tried either one yet though. I'm also going to buy a phone, so this decision would probably influence the phone that I buy.   Hello, This image gives a good picture about Virtual Adress space. But it only says half of the story. It only gives complete picture of User Adress space ie.. lower 50% (or 75% in some cases). What about the rest 50% (or 25%) which is occupied by the kernel. I know kernel also has so many different things like kernel modules , device drivers, core kernel itself. There must be some kind of layout right? What is its layout? If you say its Operating System dependent. I would say, there are two major operating systems Windows & Linux. Please give answer for any one these.

• Will Windows repair my multi-boot when I format the 1st physical partition with boot sector?

  Due to historical reasons I got a laptop with Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008R2 partitions. (boot from external wasn´t that viable) Nothing (Windows Repair, bootrec /whateveroption) worked when I restored only the Windows 7 and WS2k8 with Acronis TrueImage. Don´t ask me through what idiotic error messages I went during repair tries. (Wrong Windows version,...) So I grudgingly restored all three - with the little additional excursion that I thought changing the active partition to the Windows 7 partition would move the boot sector and let me format the Vista part... Oh no. Seems too logical for MS. (Dunno what I changed, but today it will let me format!) So the real question is: Will formatting the Vista part trash things again beyond comprehension or will Windows Repair bring back the boot rec and remove Vista from the boot options? Or should I just erase all the files to avoid trashing the boot? Where will the boot rec be (after repair) when I format the Vista? On 1st or 2nd partition? And if I get drunk and install Windows 8.1 on the 1st, will anything work? ;-) Thanks

I googled that topic and found a lot of good answers, but with all the solutions I have a little problem: I believe I can't properly give an address of shared folder. I can find it following way: "Network" - "Windows Network" - "WORKGROUP_name" - "Computer_name" - and there is some folder i would like to mount. How can I write the path to the folders in terminal? UPD i can access needed folder throw address in location bar smb://server/ro/, but i try mount it by editing /etc/fstab file (using guide https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently) i get error mount error: could not resolve address for server: Unknown error PS in /etc/fstab : //SERVER/RO /media/server cifs username=user,password=pwd, uid=1000,iocharset=utf8 0 0

• Function for getting localized path?

  Windows 7 (and probably Windows Vista) display localized folder names using the LocalizedResourceName entry in the desktop.ini file. For my Documents folder, this looks like [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21770 IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-112 IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll IconIndex=-235 (see this question) This way the explorer displays the path "C:\Users\Username\Documents" as "C:\Benutzer\Username\Dokumente" on a german Windows. I wonder, if there's any build-in shell function to automatically get this localized name or, even better, transform a whole path into its localized form (best would be anything in .NET)? This is even more interesting as the LocalizedResourceName entry is only documented for Windows CE (see here). Thanks Martin

  I recently heard that a big part in successful/quick debugging and easing the process of programming is to use a big screen. I may be purchasing a new computer in the future and this has me wondering: 1)Is the aforementioned statement actually true or is it a bit of a stretch? 2)Have you noticed that this plays a significant enough part to buy a bigger screen if the bigger screen is significantly more expensive? 3)Is it common for developers to work on 13'' laptop screen as their main (and only) workstation (this is what I currently develop on) or is this actually disadvantageous? • Moving from Windows 8.1 to Ubuntu - what can I do to replace OneDrive?

  That's it - I got tired from the constant problems on and about Windows I'm having. Network issues, performance issues, compatibility issues... But I'll seriously miss OneDrive integration (all my files are there). There is some kind of app that can sync with it? And what is the easiest way to install JDK? Through PPAs? Because (at least I think) the interviewer did not think my background strong enough although I finished 5 courses projects and currently working on other 2 projects in graduate school.   We had a user with a Lenovo G-series laptop getting a STOP error on boot. We reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium using non-OEM media and restored the user's files from backup. We are now seeing a hidden folder in the root of the C:\ drive called SYSPART which appears to contain a copy of the contents of the C:\ drive - so while the user has 160 GB of files, the drive is using 320 GB because of this folder. What is it, and is it safe to delete?

  I am attempting to monitor windows server 2008 r2 x64 Enterprise with Nagios. When I test/install the nsclientI get the following error: PDHCollector.cpp(215) Failed to query performance counters: \Processor(_total)\% Processor Time: PdhGetFormattedCounterValue failed: A counter with a negative denominator value was detected. (800007D6) Has anyone else encountered the same issue and / or resolved it, found a work around?
