  My university assigned me to theorizing a data center for an Web Hosting company. The company should provide the following services: Shared WebHosting; Dedicated Servers; VPS (Virtual Private Server); The bandwith (as resquested) is limited to 10 Gbps. Is there any good book / other info I can read (max 100 pages) about how to design a good data center for hosting, what are the best practices and what should be done from a (logical) network perspective, what security policies should be implemented and how the data center should be built (physically)? • users unable to add registry keys to HKCU

  I may not have this 100% correct so need some clarification. Are normal users on a 2003 terminal server allowed to add registry keys the their own HKCU section in the registry, or are they only allowed to edit existing ones? The reason I ask is that we have 3 keys that we need to add for each user on login. I thought it would be as simple as having a straightforward batchscript run that silently adds the keys for the user. Here is what I used: regedit.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\example.reg" When the user runs this batch scipt, they see nothing as you would expect, but the keys are not added. If I simply run the .reg file as the user, it asks if I want to add the key, but then has an error saying there was an error accessing the registry. Do I need something a bit more complex to accomplish this task.   there is a bunch of servers connected to shared storage in a private LAN (10.x.x.x). this privateLAN is managed by a windows server (DHCP, DNS and directory services) these hosts need to be from outside of the datacenter Eg. Remote desktop. can the NIC2 on each of the hosts be connected to the other public LAN (compromising speed or security? what are improtant considerations: additional hardware? like switches? routing&DNS software? currently available hardware : Dell Powerconnect 6224 switch .... planning this for storage network. software: windows 2003 server for DHCP, DNS, A/D ? would it be more flexible to use Linux distributions like IPCOP, Untangle etc? all that I am looking for is good isolation between private and other networks, avoid DHCP, DNS, AD clashes.

  I am trying to query several different SQL servers and run a command on each of them. I am unable to get the connection string right. Code, below. I receive the following error:Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. I thought if I passed it the credentials it wouldn't care about the domain. How do I get around this? • How to tell if you are connected to Wireless B, G or N?

  I am using Windows 7 on all wired desktops and wireless laptops in my home network. I recently upgraded my Ethernet switch to Gigabit and instantly noticed an increase in throughput in wired devices. I also bought a Wireless-N WAP but with degredation in wireless file transfer speeds. I have been told that a number of reasons could affect wireless speeds including which WAP is used, how many wireless devices are connected, which security mode is used, etc. However, that remains irrelevant to my question. Each of my laptops claim to support Wireless-N but I cannot seem to figure out how to determine if the laptops are truly running Wireless-N or are connected to the WAP through some sort of mixed-mode. I do not have control of the WAP device so cannot tell what mode it is running in. Is there a way to tell which mode is being used and what the throughput is for each connected device without having access to the WAP interface?

  Hi, I'd like to use the HP fingerprint sensor on my Elitebook 2530p. The system is a fresh Win7 Enterprise 64-bit and we are looking for an alternative to the HP ProtectTools Security Suite, which seems a bit bloated. We have tried the UPEK ProtectorSuite (both WBF and stand-alone edition) and they say they can't find the fingerprint device. The device shows up in device manager, in the BioMetric system configuration I have enabled logon to Windows and Domain credentials. Are there any other fingerprint login software (free or commercial) that you can recommend. Thanks in advance, Alex

• How are my DNS entries safe in a shared hosting environment?

  I'm trying to understand how DNS works in a shared hosting environment. I went to my registrar and set my name servers to my host's ns1.foo.com and ns2.foo.com. I'm using a cloud hosting provider who has a web portal where I can set my DNS entries. However I am confused by the lack of security. when I entered in the entries for my domain there was never any step to prove that I actually own that domain. What is to stop somebody else on the same hosting service (a nasty neighbor) from writing over my DNS entries and pointing my traffic to their server instead?

• How can I prevent Ask.com Toolbar from being installed every time Java is updated?

  As many are painfully aware of, Oracle continues to not only bundle the Java installation with the useless Internet browser toolbar from Ask.com, but also enable its installation by default. In addition to the toolbar, Ask also replaces your favourite search engine in your browser with Ask. Furthermore, the Java installation goes as far as to actually recommend installing this useless junk, meaning that any non IT-savvy person is more than likely to leave it checked and install it (after all, it was enabled by default and the friendly Java installer did recommend it, right?). To add insult to injury, even if you remove the Ask Toolbar, you can be sure to see it again soon, when the next Java update hits you (which seem to happen quite often lately, due to loads of security fixes for Java, but that's another story). I'll duly remove the check-mark to install Ask Toolbar, whenever I update Java, but when supporting my family and friends, it's obvious they don't. How can I prevent the pesky Ask.com Toolbar from being installed in the first place?

• Apply Group Policy to Remote Desktop Services users but not when they log on to their local system

  Running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with Remote Desktop Services role. I want to hide the servers drives using a GPO, but not the users local drives when they are logged on to their local system. Using a GPO, I went to "User Configuration - Policies - Administrative Template - Windows Components - Windows Explorer" and enabled "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" and in both used "Restrict all drives". Then under "Security Filtering" for the GPO, I restricted it to the system running Remote Desktop Services and the specific users who will be using RDS. I then applied the GPO to our domain and it worked a little too well. Not only was I successful in getting the GPO to work for RDS users, but it also affected those same users at their local systems as well. I've tried everything I can think of, but can't figure out how to apply this just to the RDS but not at their local system. What am I missing?

  I was able to setup an FTP site that I was able to access via ftp://127.0.0.1/ or my local(static) ip. But I can only access the site via local-host, and I need to have a friend have read access to it. So how do I enable remote access to it?   Hell alltogether Since I have to do this often, I want to automate the joining to a windows domain as much as possible. While joining a domain one has to specify realm = in the /etc/smb.conf, along with some other settings like security=ads. Among these settingst there is workgroup = My question is: Is it possible to fill this field automatically by samba, while joining a domain? Normally I would just have said never, but as I tried leaving this field blank while joining a domain, i got: Failed to join domain: Invalid configuration ("workgroup" set to '', should be 'BLABLA') and configuration modification was not requested This has made me wondering whether an automatic modification is possible and if so how? • Connect to MySQL EC2 Instance outside of VPC

  I have a VPC setup with a few EC2 instances inside. I'm attempting to connect to a MySQL database on an EC2 instance outside the VPC, with no luck. I have the security groups on the VPC EC2 instances set to outbound 0.0.0.0/0 which I assumed would let it connect to any outbound connection. I also followed a tutorial on creating a NAT, but wasn't exactly sure how to use it to connect to an external database. In any case, if anyone has experience and knows the proper way to connect to a database outside the VPC, it would be greatly appreciated!

• How to forbid programs from accessing a folder

  I use firefox as my default browser. IE and chrome are used as secondary browsers. Apart from these, i need to have a alternate browser. I tried opera, but when installing it, opera automatically imported all my bookmarks and other profile data from firefox folder. I really had a hard time safely deleting these files that opera made a copy, without harming the original files which firefox uses. I don't want this to happen. Here's the situation: Now, i want to install other browser or re install opera. How do i make the firefox profile folder to be accessed only by firefox.exe and me(the administrator)? Can this be done via security tab under folder properties?

• Creepy MySQL error during hard work

  Hi, I have a MySQL database installed on a OpenSuse 11.1 server (it is a Bitnami image). The database works fine, it can stay many days without any error, but when MySQL receives a huge amount of transactions, it dies immediately. The next screen shows the error: Moreover, I don't know how to restart MySQL. I have tried this: /opt/bitnami/mysql/bin/mysqld start But it doesn't work, that gives me the next output: 110209 17:09:01 [ERROR] Fatal error: Please read "Security" section of the manual to find out how to run mysqld as root! 110209 17:09:01 [ERROR] Aborting 110209 17:09:01 [Note] /opt/bitnami/mysql/bin/mysqld.bin: Shutdown complete It doesn't matter which kind of statements are executing, if they are a huge amount, MySQL dies. • After virus, Chrome & Internet Explorer won't connect to the internet, but Firefox works fine.

  I cannot connect to the internet with Chrome or Internet Explorer. Firefox works fine. It seems it happens when I was infected by a "Trojan Horse Generic 17.BWIK", "Trojan Horse SHeur.UHL" and "Fake_Antispyware.FAH". I have removed the threats using AVG anti-virus security. I got Firefox working, but Chrome and IE still cannot connect. I do not want to loose Chrome History so re-setting would be my last option and uninstall and install will be out of the question. Is there a way around this? I am using XP Pro on a desktop and DSL connection.

  I know this question is looking like an easy question or not a question at all but it's not really easy question. I'm not related to security and anti-viruses and just don't trust every provided anti-virus. So first question is a real question - Is it OK (safe) to not use anti-virus at all. I know how to use firewall, usually I use only trusted connections and surfing trusted sites. My chances to get virus is really low. Even I've got a bit outdated PC and don't want to pay the performance for it. I can do monthly scans without having one installed - is it OK to be safe ? If not can you recommend a good free antivirus solution?

• How to Restart Windows Update Service in Windows 7?

  I'm running into an issue with Windows Update on Windows 7 Professional. I am totally up to date in Windows Updates as of last week, but discovered this issue [today] during my Sunday morning PC maintenance ritual. In CONTROL PANEL - SYSTEM & SECURITY - Windows Update, when I select "Check for Updates", I get a pop-up stating: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I've re-started several times, checked that the service hadn't been disabled at start up, and I've googled extensively on the topic - but have come up with nothing. I know there must be some way to start the service from the cmd line, and I would like to know how to get the service to start at boot. Please let me know if I have left any details out that may aid in formulating a response. Any of the community's excellent insights would be greatly appreciated!

  I'm having trouble with my wifi connection. Is there any software out there that can help me determine if the problem is in the drivers or in the hardware? Regretfully, I'm working on Vista Edit: The problem I'm having is that the Vista reports that the wireless radio is connected, shows an IP and all, the router also shows that the computer is connected, but there's no connectivity. I can't logon to the router, and I can't even ping it. When I ping it I get the response: General Failure I have tried connecting with and without various wireless security protocols. I have tried disabling the wireless adapter and re-enabling it from the Device Manager I have tried updating the driver None of this has helped. When I connect via Ethernet (with a cable, that is), everything works fine. Edit: I'm not using any firewall on the computer, that I'm aware of. The IP address for the WIFI adapter is similar to the one for the LAN adapter. They differ by one.

• Java Issues in Microsoft Internet Explorer & Firefox with Java 6 Standard

  I have a user on Windows XP SP3 running Java 6 Standard Edition Update 20 (build 1.6.0_20-b02). The issue is that when Java applets load the Java splash screen is very shaky (I will have to take a screenshot if you don't know what I am talking about) and than the Java applet screen does not show properly. The Applet we use most is for a security camera and you can't view the camera properly because of the Java issues. I have uninstalled Java and re-installed and still having the same issue. I do not see any errors on the Java Console, and this only happens on his computer I am running the same version of Java and the browsers and do not have the same issue on my machine.

  For a while now I've been using the Wireless in my Mac Mini as a seperate WiFi access point because my main router doesn't quite cover my whole house. There is a dedicated CAT 5E line down to the Mini, which has a static IP address. I've turned Internet Sharing on, using Airport/WiFi but it seems my options for security are limited. Can I do WPA2? Also, it seems like my iPhone only connects 25% of the time, and the rest of the time it claims I've given a bad password. I've tried "Forget this network" repeatedly.

• Is it Secure to Grant Apache User Ownership of Directories & Files for Wordpress

  I'm currently setting up WordPress on an Ubuntu server 12 everything runs fine but there is an issue when it comes to automatically updating and uploading media via WP as Apache "www-data" user does not have permissions to write to the directories. "user1" has full permission All my directories have permissions of 0755 and files 644 my directories setup is as follows: /home/user1/public_html All WP files and directories are in "public_html" In order to work around the auto updating and uploading media I've granted Apache user ownership to the following directories sudo chown www-data:www-data wp-content -R sudo chown www-data:www-data wp-includes -R sudo chown www-data:www-data wp-admin -R I would like to know security wise how secure this is and if it is not secure what would be the best solution? That will allow me to keep all files and directories owned by user1 and still allow wp to be able to automatically update and uploading media

  I have recurring BSODs that really have me scratching my head. Here's a look at the errors: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT 0x1A (ntoskrnl.exe) - I've seen this 9 times since April 2012 NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM 0x24 (Ntfs.sys) - this one's new, happend 4 days ago BAD_POOL_HEADER 0x19 (win32k.sys) - also new, happened 7 days ago My system specs: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz ASUS Sabertooth P67 Motherboard (Rev 2) * RMA'd my Rev 1 due to recall 16GB (4 x 4GB) Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM 2 x 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black 64MB SATA HDD EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTS450 1GB PCI-E 2.0 Graphics Card I've got Windows 7 Home Premium and it's completely patched. I'm also running Microsoft Security Essentials, which is up-to-date and always present. I've run MemTest86+ from a USB drive for up to nine hours, giving my RAM a total of 6 passes, and it didn't detect a single error. I've used chkdsk in Windows 7 to scan the C:/ drive on boot (twice) and it found no problems. How can I find out what's causing all these blue screens?

  I have the same problem with this topic! How to resolve BackgroundContainer.dll error on startup? The thing is i did everything that says in answer but i)I found nothing when i started regedit.exe and searched (F3 or CTRL+F) for BackgroundContainer.dll ii)I made a full scan with AntiVirus Scanner like Microsoft Security Essentials/ Defender and also i scaned my PC with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware,but i found nothing. • mRemote and RoyalTS both are not able to RDP connect me to a Windows Server 2008 system?

  I am completely stuck on this one. If I start a RDP session independently of these 2 programs everything works fine. My RDP session connects, I click "OK" to accept the "Notice To Users" security message and then it shows me the login screen where I enter my password manually. Now, if I try to use either mRemote or RoyalTS to create this connection, I get the same behavior except that I get a "The user name or password is incorrect." message. Now, I know this cannot be true since I can manually connect with RDP. So, what is the problem with these 2 pieces of software that prevents me from logging in? I have no problems with connecting to Windows XP systems with these programs. Additionally, I wish I knew how to get one of these programs to automatically click the "OK" button on the "Notice To Users" message while automatically attempting to log me in as part of the login process. Can they do that?
