• no way to use opendns on pppoe connection?

  I have an old speedtouch usb modem (revision 0) and on my desktop with xubuntu 12.04 I've configured a pppoe connection. I can connect and my ISP assign an IP address and the DNS but the primary DNS address is not reachable by ping, the secondary yes but no address is resolved then I can't surf the web. Then I want to set the open DNS but there is bo way, if I change manually /etc/resolv.conf it is rewrited by some script (there is the flag usepeerdns on the configuration script, if I exclude it there is no way to assign any DNS server because resolv.conf is not read) also if I set not writable the file changing the default permission. I changed dhclient.conf with the code prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220; and now if I connect by a wifi connection to my router I'm using openDNS server but ppp does not use this script as long as I can see and the DNS server is always setted by my ISP. How can I use set DNS manually to a PPP connection? Is there any way to change it after the connection? Why NetworkManager is not able to manage my dsl connection, it seems not able to manage the dsl usb cable modem. If I use pppoeconf NetworkManager doesn't start and I have to manually delete the lines added to /etc/network/interfaces because the system is not able to start with full configuration of network If I connect a modem-router to the same line I can surf with the DNS server assigned by my ISP, I can't figure why. • Internet Working, Browsing Not.

  I have a very odd problem that I can't resolve. I am connected to the internet, but my browsing doesn't work. I don't mean a web browser - I mean browsing. Firefox, Chrome, Curl all fail to successfully connect to an HTTP address. However existing connections, e.g. to mail in Outlook (Exchange Server and also IMAP server) continue to work. Also, the internet is on, I can confirm both from my machine (other ports / connections) as well as from any other computer connected to the same network. Additionally, it appears to be HTTP, not simple a port issue as HTTP over port 8443 (Tortoise SVN if you must know - running over HTTP not over SVN) also fails. I am using Windows Vista SP2 (build 6002). It seems to "creep up" in that after running the computer for a few hours it will fail. (No found way to systematically reproduce the problem.) Additionally, it seems to be more prone on days where the internet connection is flaky already (not sure why the internet is flaky, just is, lot's of failed browsing requests and have to retry/reload often). What I have tried (when the problem arises) - none have yielded any resolution: Resetting the network connection (dis-connect, re-connect) Disable/re-enable the network adapter Double-checked the ip settings Double-checked the HOSTS file. Note: DNS continues to work (both new and cached responses to DNS queries). (Thanks for the suggestion Daniel and antenore.) Checked the routing tables (ip4 only as ipv6 is beyond my understanding) resetting all involved hardware (routers and modems) Close and reopen browsers Looked for malware interference: Run HijackThis Looked for suspicious processes using SysInternals procexp. Looked for explorer hijacks, lsa provider interference, winsock provider interference using SysInternals Autoruns. Run a complete anti-virus scan. Reviewed the output of a netstat -onab to see if there were stuck ports open or unusual processes running somewhere The only thing that works is to do a full reboot. That works 100% of the time to restore browsing. What else can I try to nail down the problem?

• Setup Windows Media Player 11 to stream from TVersity

  I've got TVersity installed on a Windows 2003 server box (work had an extra license that they donated to let me install at home to get some practice setting up/administering a domain etc.) I found out that Windows Media Player 11 won't install on Windows 2003, but installed TVersity instead and streaming to my 360 is working great. Problem is that I don't know how to setup streaming to any other PC on the network. All of the PCs have access to the shared network folder, but playing from there doesn't stream and the stutter is pretty bad. Is there a way to setup Windows Media Player 11 or another player to stream from TVersity?

• Replay UDP Packet Capture

  I have a UDP packet capture which was streamed from Port1 on IP1 to Port2 on IP2 on network N1. I need to replay these packets on another network N2 from Port3 on IP3 to Port4 on IP4. I need to know what software to use in order to do this and how I would go about replaying these packets so that I can detect/capture them again in N2. So far, I've tried strictly replaying these packets using a program called Colasoft Packet Player, with little luck. I'd appreciate any help on this. Thank you in advance

• Rsync like windows backup tool

  Hi, I need to backup some windows machines and have been unable to find the proper tool. What I need is a tool that does efficient copying of changed files to a windows network location, like Rsync does. In turn, the server will then back that up using rdiff-backup, a tool which does very clever incremental backups. Right now I'm using windows' 7 included backup feature, but I really don't get that. It's too much off-topic, but it doesn't suffice (seems buggy as well). I looked into Amanda, but as soon as it wanted to install MySQL, I aborted. I also tried Deltacopy, but unfortunately, I don't remember what the problem with that was... Any advice for an rsync like tool that just does daily syncs to a network location?

• How to set up Windows server 2008 to receive email?

  First off apologies, I'm from a medical background not a networking one, but I've got roped into setting up a windows 2008 server. So far web server running, fixed IP address assigned (within a large private network of the National Health Service in the UK if that makes any difference) and the network team have assigned a DNS entry for me which works, so the server can be addressed as nww.myserver.nhs.uk I've only got ports open on the router for 80 and 443 (http and https) at the moment, so presume I need a different port to enable email services. My need is to be able to accept an email to the domain name like [email protected] in order to pick up a confirmation mail from an SSL issuer (Comodo) I guess to confirm that I control the domain. After that I don't actually need mail services on the server. I see lots of stuff about setting up SMTP services but thought that was about mail out and re-routing, but how do you get the server to "listen" for mail to the domain (assuming I open port xyz or whatever it is) ?

  Hi, I'm trying to use a Windows SMTP service on Windows Server 2008, but I can't understand how to secure it. Basically, if I open firewall for local network IPs only for %windir%\system32\inetsrv\inetinfo.exe and keep Connection and Relay settings of SMTP Virtual Server to "All except the list below" (with an empty list), a few minutes later I see spam appearing in Queue directory. (Why? Isn't firewall intended to block this?) Now, if I set Connection or Relay to "Only the list below", specifying the range of local IPs, I can't use the SMTP server nevermore (a "Unable to read data from the transport connection: net_io_connectionclosed." exception is thrown). So what is the way to get rid of spam from internet but let send mails from local network?

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? I've installed Clonezilla-SE on ubuntu Server 10.10, once installed and configured Clonezilla Server i've removed the DHCP-Server and set pxe server address in dnsmasq configuration on DHCP Server : dhcp-boot=pxelinux.0,,192.168.1.100 When i try to start from PXE a Computer in the network clonezilla start, but give me an error that the ipddress of the machine is not given by the clonezilla server and can't continue ... Someone has already tried to configure Clonezilla-SE in a similar enviroment? Is there some configuration on DRBL server of Clonezilla that i need to do ?

  Hello In a traditional Windows Server 2003 environment with AD, we have shared a folder for our policy documents (MS Word). These documents get edited/updated now and then by the administrator(principal of college). Users only have read-only access to the folder, but they can still save-as and then change the content. Sharepoint is a possible solution but not easy to implement. We also thought of using a CMS on Linux and installing Joomla to let users only view the docs with a document management system... but is it possible to automatically retrieve the policy folder on the network and convert or put it in a format that users can only view and not copy? We also thought of saving the docs to secure pdf format but the principal wants an automated system. Basically she just wants to work in Word and the policies must be available to staff members on the network. Any ideas? Much appreciated.

• Replicate GAE Datastore On A Server LAN in Java

  There may be instances wherein one Company Client may not have internet connection on their vicinity. Either their Internet Service Provider currently experience a down time or there are some other problems involving the network, but not their LAN. GAE seems to be needing a connection at all times in the internet. I only need GAE Datastore. I'm thinking about a different application. Creating a Java Swing Client, for instance, and connecting to the Office Server via HRD of GAE Datastore. When I tried to check on the solutions for Java, it does not say anything about uploading all data and I do not need the App. I just need the GAE Datastore. In Java GAE, only indexes can be able to be manipulated. So, is there any tricks/ideas that you can use HRD with GAE Datastore on Java with an Internal Office Server combined? This way, it may provide service even during network down times. (Can somebody create me a tag of gae-datastore, please.)

  I am doing some research to prepare some web development environment for our small(10ppl and growing) new office. User Case: For each new web project usually we create new alias on an Apache server someproject.companywebsite From my understanding in order to see this website locally for all the rest of our team(including mangers and directors) they will need to edit hosts file (e.g. "192.168.1.10 someproject.companywebsite"), and like that each time for a new project(can be 2-5 each week) Solution: And I looking for a solution how to edit this hosts file only once and distribute it over all mac machines in our network at once or much more flawlessly than poking around with each machine every time over and over again. Is that possible? Or that a very wrong way of doing that? Perhaps we better set up own local dns server and point to it our router? Though own dns server a bit concerns me because of might be some network interruption and others lags, if you know what I mean. Or perhaps there are another workflows for that? What's the best way for such things? So I'll be so grateful to hear some advices from experienced admins. I couldn't find that info on internet, so if you know where to read about it, point me in a right direction. Thank you in advance Alex

To be more specific, I only need the following support for following packages/softwares/components. wxPython C Network Support Linux Utilities Vi File System(fdisk/parted, ntfsprogs etc) Basic(cp, mount/umount, mkdir etc) The application will run from a live CD. Currently i am using Fedora 12 with Gnome for live CD. Currently the size of live image is around 350 MB. The size of application is hardly 1 MB. I don't need anything else except above mentioned. Just my application and supporting packages, no desktop etc. So, I need a Lightweight Linux image as smaller as possible providing all the above mentioned packages/components. I am considering the following distributions: Xfce LXDE Fluxbox Enlightenment Any ideas/suggestions?

• Packet loss with all adapters on one PC only on the LAN

  I have a Windows 7 64-bit machine that is losing up to 20% of IP packets on both adapters - wireless & LAN. Browser traffic appears to be affected the most, but it is happening to all protocols. All other computers on the network are functioning fine. If I ping from my faulty machine to any machine on the LAN (wired or wirelessly), including the router/gateway and internet sites, I get up to 20% packet loss. If I do the following commands: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew then I sometimes get my network performance back for a matter of a few seconds to less than a couple of minutes. Rebooting also works for a short period of time. This problem has been occurring for a couple of months and is getting worse. The computer used to work just fine. I updated the wireless adapter firmware the other day with no effect. Does anyone know what is happening?

  I'd like to find a small linux box with the following specifications: Small (mini-ITX size is OK) Fanless Runs Debian At least two gigabit network interfaces WLAN that supports "host ap" with hostapd + mac80211 in AP mode Can encrypt AES at least 10 megabytes per second Total cost $300 or less Solutions from multiple parts also accepted - I can buy an external network card etc. and build the box myself if the components are available. If you don't know about the "host ap" thing, just suggest your solution, I'll find out if I can get that resolved. If I can't get all that, I can possibly skip the "runs Debian" part, and I can definitely skip the hostapd part if the box can be a wireless access point with multiple ESSIDs out of the box. Something like Asus RT-N16 is close - doesn't run Debian easily, and probably doesn't encrypt AES fast enough. Something like Zotac ZBOX HD-ID11 is also close - no idea which WLAN card it has and it lacks second gigabit interface, but otherwise nice.

• Netgear router-speed problem after XBox use

  When my son is at my place at the weekend, he plays XBox Live over the internet, using my wireless network (Netgear 'g' type router). This usually thrashes & crashes the router to the extent I have to hard-boot it to get it working again. However, after this weekend, on my two laptops, I'm left with the problem that the router is working, but I'm only getting 0.38Mbps out of it, at all times of the day. I've tried hard-booting the router, but no difference. Could this be a knock-on effect of the Xbox use? I can't believe the router could be damaged, but working slower? Is that possible? Tiscali haven't come back to me yet on any 'network' issues. Thanks in advance

• Get source and destination of outbound traffic in pfSense

  I'm looking at the traffic graph in pfSense (Version 1.2.2), which we're using as a router / NAT / ect on our network. Recently, I'm seeing a sudden, constant spike of 15 - 30kbps traffic outbound, that is unusual for our network (normally its below 2kbps, we're mostly all inbound traffic) Is there any way to determine what the source of this traffic is, or where it's going? (Just an internal IP address for source, and external IP address for destination would be all I need) I've already tried switching the traffic graph to 'LAN' and watching the host list on the right side, but it seems ... flakey. The numbers it shows seem to fade in and out at random, and the values never add up to anywhere near the graph values.   My company publishes sites on a somewhat convoluted domain structure, and we're having trouble getting accurate numbers in Analytics when we have multiple trackers on the page. We publish under two brands (A, B). Each brand has a "national" site at A.com, B.com, as well as per-city "local" sites at eg. ny.A.com, la.A.com, sf.A.com, etc. Right now we're trying to track in these dimensions: Full network (A.com, ny.A.com, B.com, la.B.com, etc.) All sites in brand (A.com, ny.A.com, la.A.com, etc.) Inidividual site (ny.A.com) Here are the commands we're using on an individual site: _gaq.push( ['t0._setAccount', 'UA-XXXXXX-1'], // full network ['t0._setDomainName', 'none'], ['t0._setAllowLinker', true], ['t0._trackPageview'], ['t1._trackPageLoadTime'], ['t1._setAccount', 'UA-XXXXXX-2'], // brand ['t1._setDomainName', 'none'], ['t1._setAllowLinker', true], ['t1._trackPageview'], ['t1._trackPageLoadTime'], ['t2._setAccount', 'UA-XXXXXX-3'], // individual ['t2._setDomainName', 'none'], ['t2._setAllowLinker', true], ['t2._trackPageview'], ['t2._trackPageLoadTime'] ); We send the same commands to each account because we've had strange results when trackers were configured differently in the past. • Anyone interested in obtaining a cable list from a visio Diagram? [closed]

Just wondering if anyone had to deal with the following problem - you have to install over say a 100 network elements and servers - cabling is done via contractors, so you need to provide them with an accurate, error-free cable list - your inputs are a set of detailed, port by port, visio diagrams. Prb is to obtain the cable list and get the cabling started while you're busy crafting the switch/routers configs. I coded a Visio plugin, which I plan to release under the GNU license, that returns a cable list from a diagram, and tested it on intermediate size infrastructure, 2K+ cables. It works well. The tool needs a little work to be user friendly, so before getting started, I wanted to know if that was worth the effort.
