  • ASP.NET MVC 2 AJAX dilemma: Lose Models concept or create unmanageable JavaScript

    Hi, Ok, let's assume we are working with ASP.NET MVC 2 (latest and greatest preview) and we want to create AJAX user interface with jQuery. So what are our real options here? Option 1 - Pass Json from the Controller to the view, and then the view submits Json back to the controller. This means (in the order given): User opens some View (let's say - /Invoices/January) which has to visualize a list of data (e.g. <IEnumerable<X.Y.Z.Models.Invoice>>) Controller retrieves the Model from the repository (assuming we are using repository pattern). Controller creates a new instance of a class which we will serialize to Json. The reasaon we do this, is because the model may not be serializable (circular reference ftl) Controller populates the soon-to-be-serialized class with data Controller serializes the class to Json and passes it the view. User does some change and submits the 'form' The View submits back Json to the controller The Controller now must 'manually' validate the input, because the Json passed does not bind to a Model See, if our View is communicating to the controller via Json, we lose the Model validation, which IMHO is incredible disadvantage. In this case, forget about data annotations and stuff. Option 2 - Ok, the alternative of the first approach is to pass the Models to the Views, which is the default behavior in the template when you start a new project. We pass a strong typed model to the view The view renders the appropriate html and javascript, sticking to the model property names. This is important! The user submits the form. If we stick to the model names, when we .serialize() the form and submit it to the controller it will map to a model. There is no Json mapping. The submitted form directly binds to a strongly typed model, hence, we can use the model validation. E.g. we keep the business logic where it should be. Problem with this approach is, if we refactor some of the Models (change property names, types, etc), the javascript we wrote would become invalid. We will have to manually refactor the scripting and hope we don't miss something. There is no way you can test it either. Ok, the question is - how to write an AJAX front end, which keeps the business logic validation in the model (e.g. controller passes and receives a Model type), but in the same time doesn't screw up the javascript and html when we refactor the model?

  • SQL Server, Remote Stored Procedure, and DTC Transactions

    Our organization has a lot of its essential data in a mainframe Adabas database. We have ODBC access to this data and from C# have queried/updated it successfully using ODBC/Natural "stored procedures". What we'd like to be able to do now is to query a mainframe table from within SQL Server 2005 stored procs, dump the results into a table variable, massage it, and join the result with native SQL data as a result set. The execution of the Natural proc from SQL works fine when we're just selecting it; however, when we insert the result into a table variable SQL seems to be starting a distributed transaction that in turn seems to be wreaking havoc with our connections. Given that we're not performing updates, is it possible to turn off this DTC-escalation behavior? Any tips on getting DTC set up properly to talk to DataDirect's (formerly Neon Systems) Shadow ODBC driver?

  • How do I consume a COM+ local server from C#?

    I have a web application from a company that has gone out of business. We're looking to extend the web app a bit with some asp.net functionality. The web app was written as an ISAPI application in Delphi, and uses COM+ to talk to the SQL Server and handles things like session management and authentication. So, in order to get the current user and other details, I have to use the undocument COM+ components. I was able to dig out the type library and auto generated IDL, but at this point i'm lost in creating a .NET proxy class for this. Is there a way to autogenerate the .net COM+ proxy either from the .dll itself (extracting the typelib info) or from the IDL? Note: These seem to be simple COM style objects hosted in COM+ servers, no subscriptions or transaction monitoring..

  • Suspended Laptop Cannot Wake Up - Ubuntu

    I've got an ASUS G73JH, and whenever I suspend it or hibernate it, it will not wake up. The screen stays backlight but is black. The fan remains running, however the HDD does not, not disk activity is noticeable (audibly (It's not a SSD)). I can't: Awaken it with the keyboard Awaken it with the mouse Soft power-off by pressing the power button Change virtual screens by pressing Ctrl-Alt-# Restart X by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace I have to hold down the power button and shut it down that way, and this seems a little unreasonable. Is there a place I could look for more detail as to what's causing this? Is there a known quick-fix to this issue? Nothing is logged as happening when the system is in "suspend" mode.   • Should integration testing of DAOs be done in an application server?

    I have a three tier application under development and am creating integration tests for DAOs in the persistence layer. When the application runs in Websphere or JBoss I expect to use the connection pooling and transaction manager of those application servers. When the application runs in Tomcat or Jetty, we'll be using C3P0 for pooling and Atomikos for transactions. Because of these different subsystems, should the DAO's be tested in a fully configured application server environment or should we handle those concerns when integration testing the service layer? Currently we plan on setting up a simple JDBC data source with non-JTA (i.e. resource-local) transactions for DAO integration testing, thus no application server is involved....but this leaves me wondering about environmental problems we won't uncover.

    I wish to specify a specific command timeout (or LOCK_TIMEOUT) for an SQL and once this time out is reached an exception (or alert) has to be raised in nHibernate. The following is an example pseudo-code what I have written: using (var session = sessionFactory.OpenSession()) { using (var sqlTrans = session.BeginTransaction()) { ICriteria criteria = session.CreateCriteria(typeof(Foo)); criteria.SetTimeout(5); //Here is the specified command timout, eg: property SqlCommand.CommandTimeout Foo fooObject = session.Load<Foo>(primaryKeyIntegerValue, LockMode.Force); session.SaveOrUpdate(fooObject); sqlTrans.Commit(); } } In SQL server we used to achieve this using the following SQL: BEGIN TRAN SET LOCK_TIMEOUT 500 SELECT * FROM Foo WITH (UPDLOCK, ROWLOCK) WHERE PrimaryKeyID = 1000001 If PrimaryKeyID row would have locked in other transaction the following error message is being shown by SQL Server: Msg 1222, Level 16, State 51, Line 3 Lock request time out period exceeded Similarly I wish to show a lock time out or command time out information using nHibernate.   • Hibernate Lazy init exception in spring scheduled job

    I have a spring scheduled job (@Scheduled) that sends emails from my system according to a list of recipients in the DB. This method is annotated with the @Scheduled annotation and it invokes a method from another interface, the method in the interface is annotated with the @Transactional annotation. Now, when i invoke the scheduled method manually, it works perfectly. But when the method is invoked by spring scheduler i get the LazyInitFailed exception in the method implementing the said interface.     I have an application written in a combination of ASP/VB6/VBScript and ASP.NET/C# that consists of a website part, SOAP-like webservice part and a queue processing part processing incoming files in a hotfolder. We are used to running under load balancers (Microsoft or other make). Often we need to communicate between the different load balanced servers. Currently we do this through the SQL Server database that is common for all nodes, however, this comes with a performance penalty as each message requires a transaction and continual polling from the other nodes.   • Is there a way to only backup a SQL 2005 database structure fully, but only the data in a certain se

    I have several schemas in my database, and the largest one ("large" meaning disk space consumed) is my "web" schema which is a denormalized copy of data in the operational schemas. This denormalized data is able to be reconstructed at anytime, and is merely there for extremely fast read purposes. Since the data is redundant, and VERY large - I'd like to exclude it from being backed up. I already have stored procedures that can regenerate all of the data in that schema in a couple of hours - for use in the event of a failure. I assume I can split the tables in this schema out to another data file or such (ideally even on another drive for faster reads), but is there a way to never have that data file backup, yet still in the event of a failure its structure could be restored (and other DDL stuff like procs, views, etc)? Somewhat related, can I also have these tables not do transaction logging, if I go to "Full" backup mode for the rest of the database?

  • How do I integrate a new MVC C# Project with an existing Web Forms VB.NET Web Application Project?

    We have a corporate website with a large amount of dynamic business application pages (e.g. Shopping Cart, Helpdesk, Product/Service management, Reporting, etc.) The site was built as an ASP.Net Web Application Project (WAP). Our systems have evolved over the years to use .NET 4.5 and various custom business logic DLLs (written in a mix of C# and VB.NET). However, the site itself is still using VB.NET Web Forms. We now have done a few side projects in MVC 4 using Razor/C#, and we want to use this framework for new pages on the main corporate site going forward. What would be the easiest way to achieve this? I found this nice list of steps to integrate MVC 4 into an existing Web Forms app. The problem is that because our existing app is a VB.NET WAP, it compiles into a single DLL, and .NET allows only one language per DLL. The site is way too big for us to contemplate converting it to C# all at once (yes, I've looked at the conversion tools, and they're good, but even 99% accuracy would leave us a huge amount of cleanup work.) I thought about converting the existing WAP into a Web Site Project (WSP) which does allow mixing languages and then following the steps above, but after a few pages of Google results, I couldn't find any steps for converting a WAP to WSP. (Plenty of sites offer the reverse steps: converting a WSP to a WAP.) Another idea I had was to create a completely separate MVC project, and then somehow squish them together into the same folder structure, where they would share the bin folder but compile to separate DLL's. I have no idea if this is possible, because certain files would collide (e.g. Global.asax, web.config, etc.) Finally, I can imagine a compromise solution where we keep all the MVC stuff in its own separate application under a subfolder of the main solution. We already use our own custom session state solution, so it wouldn't be difficult to pass data between the old site to the new pages. Which of the ideas above do you think makes the most sense for us? Is there another solution that I'm missing?

  • Hide a base class method from derived class, but still visible outside of assembly

    This is a question about tidyness. The project is already working, I'm satisfied with the design but I have a couple of loose ends that I'd like to tie up. My project has a plugin architecture. The main body of the program dispatches work to the plugins that each reside in their own AppDomain. The plugins are described with an interface, which is used by the main program (to get the signature for invoking DispatchTaskToPlugin) and by the plugins themselves as an API contract: namespace AppServer.Plugin.Common { public interface IAppServerPlugin { void Register(); void DispatchTaskToPlugin(Task t); // Other methods omitted } } In the main body of the program Register() is called so that the plugin can register its callback methods with the base class, and then later DispatchTaskToPlugin() is called to get the plugin running. The plugins themselves are in two parts. There's a base class that implements the framework for the plugin (setup, housekeeping, teardown, etc..). This is where DispatchTaskToPlugin is actually defined: namespace AppServer.Plugin { abstract public class BasePlugin : MarshalByRefObject, AppServer.Plugin.Common.IAppServerPlugin { public void DispatchTaskToPlugin(Task t) { // ... // Eventual call to actual plugin code // } // Other methods omitted } } The actual plugins themselves only need to implement a Register() method (to give the base class the delegates to call eventually) and then their business logic. namespace AppServer.Plugin { public class Plugin : BasePlugin { override public void Register() { // Calls a method in the base class to register itself. } // Various callback methods, business logic, etc... } } Now in the base class (BasePlugin) I've implemented all kinds of convenience methods, collected data, etc.. for the plugins to use. Everything's kosher except for that lingering method DispatchTaskToPlugin(). It's not supposed to be callable from the Plugin class implementations -- they have no use for it. It's only needed by the dispatcher in the main body of the program. How can I prevent the derived classes (Plugin) from seeing the method in the base class (BasePlugin/DispatchTaskToPlugin) but still have it visible from outside of the assembly? I can split hairs and have DispatchTaskToPlugin() throw an exception if it's called from the derived classes, but that's closing the barn door a little late. I'd like to keep it out of Intellisense or possibly have the compiler take care of this for me. Suggestions?

    Does anyone konw whether I can load .net 4.0 assemblies from SQL Server 2008? In particular, we are looking at SQL Reporting, with Custom Data Extensions. I have noticed that hte SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence Studio does not seem to support VS2010 at the moment. If I release my CDE's as .net 4.0 assemblies, will I even be able to load them from within the SQL Server Reporting Server?

I don't want to prevent other processes from reading the table, but I do want to prevent other processes updating the table.
