  we're an ISV about to deploy our SaaS application over the internet to our end users, and are currently looking for an application monitoring solution. In addition to monitoring the usual OS-level suspects (I/O, disk space, logs, CPU, RAM, swapping, etc.), we're also looking to monitor, alert and report on internal application events, conditions, and counters (think queue size for internal service, or latency of a service we're getting from a third party via custom APIs). We're started looking at Nagios, Zenoss, etc., but found out those do only low-level stuff, and are currently looking at MOM and ManageEngine. Still, they are far from being an custom app monitoring tool. So - do you have anything to suggest?

• Incorrect deployment of WSGI app to AWS using Elastic Beanstalk

  cross-link to AWS forums I have developed a simple Python web service using WSGI and would like to deploy it to AWS cloud using Elastic Beanstalk. My problem is I cannot make all the options I specify in Elastic Beanstalk configuration to be correctly configured in the cloud. For deployment, I use Elastic Beanstalk CLI utility. I have run eb init command and set up the required parameters. After this, a directory named .elasticbeanstalk was created in my source tree. It has two config files that are used for deployment, namely config and optionsettings. The latter one among the other options contains the WSGI configuration that has to update /etc/httpd/conf.d/wsgi.conf at the instances. After some of my adjustments the file has the following settings: [aws:elasticbeanstalk:application:environment] DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE = PARAM1 = PARAM2 = PARAM4 = PARAM3 = PARAM5 = [aws:elasticbeanstalk:container:python] WSGIPath = handler.py NumProcesses = 2 StaticFiles = /static= NumThreads = 10 [aws:elasticbeanstalk:container:python:staticfiles] /static = static/ [aws:elasticbeanstalk:hostmanager] LogPublicationControl = false [aws:autoscaling:launchconfiguration] InstanceType = t1.micro EC2KeyName = zmicier-aws [aws:elasticbeanstalk:application] Application Healthcheck URL = [aws:autoscaling:asg] MaxSize = 10 MinSize = 1 Custom Availability Zones = [aws:elasticbeanstalk:monitoring] Automatically Terminate Unhealthy Instances = true [aws:elasticbeanstalk:sns:topics] Notification Endpoint = Notification Protocol = email It turns out that not all of these options are considered when I start the environment or update it. Thus, when I update NumThreads or NumProcesses, the respective parameters get changed in wsgi.conf as expected. But whatever I write to the WSGIPath and StaticFiles parameters, I'm not able to automatically change the respective values of wsgi.conf, they remain Alias /static /opt/python/current/app/ WSGIScriptAlias / /opt/python/current/app/application.py which drives me nuts. • Cisco Catalyst 4500 Policy Based Routing

  In order to test a new firewall I just set up I'm trying to implement policy based routing on our core switch. I want traffic from certain vlans to be routed to the new firewall while everything else continues being routed through the old firewall. I was trying to use this guide. Everything from that guide works fine except trying to run the "ip policy route-map" command in the interface configuration mode. IOS is telling me that such a command doesn't exist. A "show ip interface vlan" command says that policy routing is disabled. Any ideas?   Is it possible to set Google chrome with a custom user profile as the default browser? When I set google chrome as the default browser, it picks the "default" user profile as against the custom one I have setup. I tried setting google chrome as default browser after opening it from that particular user profile, but it doesn't seem to have an effect. • How to copy files pointed to (not the shortcut files themselves)

  I have a folder containing shortcuts that point to files that are located in various directories and drives. I would like to copy the files pointed to (NOT the shortcut files themselves) to a single destination folder. Is there a way in windows (XP, Vista, 7), file manager, or some utility I can use to do this? I've heard you can do this with various multi-step custom scripts. However, I've heard rumors there is a one click way to do this without having to fabricate a custom script each time, where regardless where the shortcuts point to, I can select the group of shortcuts and do a copy operation that will grab the files they point to. Then, I can paste or otherwise put the actual files (not shortcuts) into one directory. It would be very time consuming to manually find each file pointed to by a shortcut and one by one copy them to the target folder. Note that I've seen this question asked before on the internet but haven't seen a good answer.

Our team has been using it since then. This morning I came in and everyone of us is getting a 500 error. • emails not sending from CentOS 5.6 VM on Win7 via PHP code

  I am experiencing an issue where my CentOS 5.6 (Final) VM running on Windows 7 has stopped sending emails from my PHP code. I'm confident this isn't a coding issue as I have the exact same code running in my office and emails send correctly from there, hence why I believe this to be a networking/configuration issue. In my /etc/hosts/ file on my VM I have the following: 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.0.9 crmpicco.co.uk m.crmpicco.co.uk dev53.localdomain When I run setup on my VM the DNS configuration is set to dev53.localdomain and my Primary DNS is 192.168.0.1. • Very long (>300s) request processing time on Apache Server serving static content from particular IP

  We are running an Apache 2.2 server for a very large web site. Over the past few months we have been having some users reporting slow response times, while others (including our resources, both on the internal network and our home networks) do not see any degradation in performance. After a ton of investigation, we finally found a "Deny from none" statement in our configuration that was causing reverse DNS lookups (which were timing out) that solved the bulk of our issues, but we still have some customers that we are seeing in the Apache logs (using %D in the log format) with request processing times of 300s for images, css, javascript and other static content. We've checked all Deny / Allow statements for reoccurrence of "none", as well as all other things we know of that would cause reverse DNS lookups (such as using "REMOTE_HOST" in rewrite rules, using %a instead of %h in our log format configuration) as well as verified that HostnameLookups is set to "Off". As an aside, we've also validated that reverse DNS lookups for folks having this problem do not time out - so I'm fairly certain DNS is not an issue in this case. I've run out of ideas. Are there any Apache configuration scenarios that someone can point me to that I might be missing that would cause request times for static content to take so long only for certain users? • How to configure a shortcut for an SSH connection through a SSH tunnel

  My company production servers (FOO, BAR...) are located behind two gateway servers (A, B). In order to connect to server FOO, I have to open a ssh connection with server A or B with my username JOHNDOE, then from A (or B) I can access any production server opening a SSH connection with a standard username (let's call it WEBBY). So, each time I have to do something like: ssh johndoe@a ... ssh webby@foo ... # now I can work on the server As you can imagine, this is a hassle when I need to use scp or if I need to quickly open multiple connections. I have configured a ssh key and also I'm using .ssh/config for some shortcuts. I was wondering if I can create some kind of ssh configuration in order to type ssh foo and let SSH open/forward all the connections for me. Is it possible? • PXE Boot PCLinuxOS ISO

  I'm in the process of trying to convert some computers at my local school to be diskless browser stations. We've identified PCLinuxOS as the OS we'd like to use due to it's easy interface for creating custom ISO images (we need WINE and some custom apps installed also, as well as FireFox). I've been having problems figuring out how to get an ISO to boot via PXE. In our network, I only have access to TFTP and HTTP, so I cannot use NFS. The machines all have enough memory (4 gigs) that they could use a ram drive to hold the ISO image, if that helps. Currently I've been looking at GPXE with GRUB/MEMDISK, but I don't know if that's the right solution, or even where a good resource is for setting it up. Searching the web has proved fruitless, as most of the information is either NFS-specific or out of date. The other students and I would appreciate any help! :)

• Utility to LOGICALLY compare two xml files?

  Right now we are attempting to build golden configurations for our environment. One piece of software that we use relies on large XML files to contain the bulk of its configuration. We want tot ake our lab environment, catalog it as our "golden configuration" and then be able to audit against that configuration in the future. Since diff is bytewise comparison and NOT logical comparison, we can't use it to compare files in this case (XML is unordered, so it won't work). What I am looking for is something that can parse the two XML files, and compare them element by element. So far we have yet to find any utilities that can do this. OS doesn't matter, I can do it on anything where it will work. The preference is something off the shelf. Any ideas? Edit: One issue we have run into is one vendor's config files will occasionally mention the same element several times, each time with different attributes. Whatever diff utility we use would need to be able to identify either the set of attributes or identify them all as part of one element. Tall order :)

I've also adapted my PF configuration to work with VLAN but I don't see any incoming traffic.   I am trying to set up a test environment on my local machine, and I am trying to start a DNS daemon that loads tha configuration from a named.conf.custom file. • LCD monitor reports incorrect maximum resolution

  I have four 20" Planar 2010M LCD monitors with a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 connected to two nVidia video cards (8600 GT and 7600 GS). I'm running Windows Server 2003 x86. Recently, two of the monitors have started mis-reporting their maximum resolution as 1280 x 1024. When this first happened, I used nVidia's Custom Resolutions feature to force the monitors back to 1600 x 1200. Yesterday, however, I upgraded nVidia's video card driver, and ever since, I cannot get the DVI one back to 1600 x 1200. When I add the custom resolution in nVidia's control panel, if I set either the width or the height to even a single pixel more than 1280 x 1024, nothing changes when I click Test (the monitor doesn't even flash black, although after 15 seconds, it flashes black and doesn't change). After adding Does anyone know what the problem is? Is there anything I can do about it?

  I am working on designing a custom PCIexpress card. I am trying to write a kernel module that will DMA my custom card. Right now when i plug the card into linux no valid PCI device shows up (meaning I probably have a error on my end, i know) however, If I halt the system at startup in the bootloader (uboot) I am able to directly access the card as I know in uboot the physical memory address that is mapped to my device. Is there a way I can access the card in a simliar fashion in linux? Thanks, Stephanie

  I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate over my existing Windows 7 Professional. I downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and burned the install disc at the slowest speed possible (x3). I booted to the DVD, but at the second screen I am already getting an error! That screen I am choosing between "Upgrade" and "Custom". I am trying to choose "Custom" but then I get the error: Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation.   I am trying to connect to my MSSQL server 2008 web instance and im failing horribly... i get the error 26 and before you jump on me i have done these Check the spelling of the SQL Server instance name that is specified in the connection string. Use the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool to enable SQL Server to accept remote connections over the TCP or named pipes protocols. For more information about the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration Tool, see Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections. Make sure that you have configured the firewall on the server instance of SQL Server to open ports for SQL Server and the SQL Server Browser port (UDP 1434). Make sure that the SQL Server Browser service is started on the server. in addition to theese i have disabled the firewall completely and tried other ports nothing works the same credentials work on the server but not on the client. this is the exact error message A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. • Apache ScriptAlias and access error?

  First of all after much pain i figured out how to make it work in Apache 2.4 windowz. Here is my configuration that seems to work successfully for git clone and push and everything. Problem First of all my configuration works. There is a "Require all denied" at / directory. I want only git functionality and nothing else. • Tmux causes Emacs glitch

  Recently I started using Tmux, but I noticed that it causes a strange Emacs glitch. When I open source code for elisp or haskell, the comments aren't highlighted. Only the comment sign is (; in case of elisp, -- in case of haskell). The rest of the commented line is in normal colour. When I run Emacs outside of Tmux everything works as expected - the whole commented line is highlighted in a colour denoting a comment. Any ideas why this is happening? SOLUTION: Based on Stefan's comment I added this to my .emacs file: (custom-set-variables (custom-set-faces '(font-lock-comment-face ((((class color) (min-colors 8) (background dark)) (:foreground "red")))))) Now the comments are displayed in red, just like comment delimiters.

• How can I fix this configure error?

  I'm trying to build mosh from source on a SUSE10 machine and am getting the following error: checking for protobuf... no configure: error: Package requirements (protobuf) were not met: No package 'protobuf' found Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables protobuf_CFLAGS and protobuf_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details. I downloaded the source to protobuf and installed it in a custom path as well. I'm not using a package manager for any of this and cannot for various reasons outside the scope of the question. I added that custom path to my PATH and rehashed. Typically, this is enough for configure but in this case its not doing the trick. I added the prefix for protobuf to PKG_CONFIG_PATH but am still hitting this error. What should I do next to get past this error?

• Piping powershell messages to Write-EventLog

  I have a powershell script that runs a custom cmdlet. It is run by Task Scheduler and I want to log what it does. This is my current crude version: Add-PsSnapIn PianolaCmdlets Write-EventLog -LogName "Windows Powershell" -Source "Powershell" -Message "Starting Update-EbuNumbers" -EventId 0 Get-ClubMembers -HasTemporaryEbuNumber -show all | Update-EbuNumbers -Verbose Write-EventLog -LogName "Windows Powershell" -Source "Powershell" -Message "Finished Update-EbuNumbers" -EventId 0 What I would like to do is log the output of my custom cmdlet. Ideally I'd like to create different types of event log entries based on whether it was a warning or a verbose message. Update: I don't want to log the return value of the commandlet. The Update-EbuMembers cmdlet does not return an object. I want to log any verbose messages written by WriteVerbose and I want to log errors created by ThrowTerminatingError.
