• Laptop as server [closed]

  My client wants to use a cheap AMD E-300 ,5400 rpm disk,4gb memory laptop as a POS server and music player at the same time with dual screen. I couldnt convince him that this wouldnt be a good choice. The applications are a database a music player ,and the .net 4 application. I am afraid of performance issues. However the reasons for this choice is that laptop takes not much space ,easy dual screen for music player and application ,can easilly be replaced and that it will last forever as none of his laptops are ever broken. I believe that this is a good idea but i feel thats something wrong there. Do you believe that is an ok choice?

• Where is the SQL Azure Development Environment

  Recently I posted an entry explaining that you can develop in Windows Azure without having to connect to the main service on the Internet, using the Software Development Kit (SDK) which installs two emulators - one for compute and the other for storage. That brought up the question of the same kind of thing for SQL Azure. The short answer is that there isn’t one. While we’ll make the development experience for all versions of SQL Server, including SQL Azure more easy to write against, you can simply treat it as another edition of SQL Server. For instance, many of us use the SQL Server Developer Edition - which in versions up to 2008 is actually the Enterprise Edition - to develop our code. We might write that code against all kinds of environments, from SQL Express through Enterprise Edition. We know which features work on a certain edition, what T-SQL it supports and so on, and develop accordingly. We then test on the actual platform to ensure the code runs as expected. You can simply fold SQL Azure into that same development process. When you’re ready to deploy, if you’re using SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 or higher, you can script out the database when you’re done as a SQL Azure script (with change notifications where needed) by selecting the right “Engine Type” on the scripting panel: (Thanks to David Robinson for pointing this out and my co-worker Rick Shahid for the screen-shot - saved me firing up a VM this morning!) Will all this change? Will SSMS, “Data Dude” and other tools change to include SQL Azure? Well, I don’t have a specific roadmap for those tools, but we’re making big investments on Windows Azure and SQL Azure, so I can say that as time goes on, it will get easier. For now, make sure you know what features are and are not included in SQL Azure, and what T-SQL is supported. • C#.NET vs VB.NET, Which language is better?

  Features I cannot say any language good or bad as long as it's compiler can produce MSIL can run under .NET CLR. If someone says C# has more futures, you can understand that those new features are of C# compiler but not .NET, because if C# has a specific future then CLR cannot understand them. So the new features of C# will have to convert to the code understood by CLR eventually. that means the new features are developed for C# compiler basically to facilitates the developer to write their code in better way. so that means no difference in feature list between C# and VB.NET if you think in CLR perspective. Ease of writing Code I feel writing code in C# is easy, because my background is C and C++, Java, syntaxes very are similar. I assume most developers feel the same. Readability But some people say VB.NET code most readable for the members who are from non technical background, because keywords are generally in English rather special charectors. No of Projects in Market I assume 80 percent of market uses C# in their .NET development. for example in my company many projects are there .nET and all are using C#. Productivity & Experience though the feature list is same, generally developers wants to write code in their familiar languages. because it increase the productivity.   This has been driving me crazy...I have VS 2008 and am developing vb.net applications. How do I specify if I am building a debug or release version? The description I found of how to do this on the Microsoft site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wx0123s5.aspx) don't seem to be accurate. This should be pretty straight forward shouldn't it? It seems that a friend of mine that does C# development says it is easy in his environment. Are the VS environments different between C# and VB?

• Testing home directory scripts by setting $HOME to the location of the test directory

  I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge. The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home export HOME=~/testing/home cd ~ screen -S testing-home # start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc. # test revisions However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about? Is there a much better way to do this sort of thing?

  I've been using a service by unblock-us.com, which provides a proxy to Canadians/others allowing access to services that are locked down to only US ip addresses. This is easy enough to achieve by setting up a reverse proxy (eg: squid) on a US-hosted server, and then configuring your browser or OS to use that proxy. However, there is something that unblock-us does that I'm not sure how to duplicate. Rather than configuring your OS to use them as a proxy, you can simply change the DNS Server settings on your router to point to their addresses. Any requests to services they support are automatically proxied. The advantage to this is that you don't have to set up every computer in your house, and it "just works" with clients like ps3, xbox, android, etc. Disadvantage is you really don't have control over what gets proxied, as well as there are privacy concerns I suppose. How can I achieve this same functionality on my own us-based slice?

• Measuring ASP.NET and SharePoint output cache

  During ASP.NET output caching week in my local blog I wrote about how to measure ASP.NET output cache. As my posting was based on real work and real-life results then I thought that this posting is maybe interesting to you too. So here you can read what I did, how I did and what was the result. Introduction Caching is not effective without measuring it. As MVP Henn Sarv said in one of his sessions then you will get what you measure. And right he is. Lately I measured caching on local Microsoft community portal to make sure that our caching strategy is good enough in environment where this system lives. In this posting I will show you how to start measuring the cache of your web applications. Although the application measured is built on SharePoint Server publishing infrastructure, all those counters have same meaning as similar counters under pure ASP.NET applications. Measured counters I used Performance Monitor and the following performance counters (their names are similar on ASP.NET and SharePoint WCMS): Total number of objects added – how much objects were added to output cache. Total object discards – how much objects were deleted from output cache. Cache hit count – how many times requests were served by cache. Cache hit ratio – percent of requests served from cache. The first three counters are cumulative while last one is coefficient. You can use also other counters to measure the full effect of caching (memory, processor, disk I/O, network load etc before and after caching). Measuring process The measuring I describe here started from freshly restarted web server. I measured application during 12 hours that covered also time ranges when users are most active. The time range does not include late evening hours and night because there is nothing to measure during these hours. During measuring we performed no maintenance or administrative tasks on server. All tasks performed were related to usual daily content management and content monitoring. Also we had no advertisement campaigns or other promotions running at same time. The results You can see the results on following graphic.   Total number of objects added   Total object discards   Cache hit count   Cache hit ratio You can see that adds and discards are growing in same tempo. It is good because cache expires and not so popular items are not kept in memory. If there are more popular content then the these lines may have bigger distance between them. Cache hit count grows faster and this shows that more and more content is served from cache. In current case it shows that cache is filled optimally and we can do even better if we tune caches more. The site contains also pages that are discarded when some subsite changes (page was added/modified/deleted) and one modification may affect about four or five pages. This may also decrease cache hit count because during day the site gets about 5-10 new pages. Cache hit ratio is currently extremely good. The suggested minimum is about 85% but after some tuning and measuring I achieved 98.7% as a result. This is due to the fact that new pages are most often requested and after new pages are added the older ones are requested only sometimes. So they get discarded from cache and only some of these will return sometimes back to cache. Although this may also indicate the need for additional SEO work the result is very well in technical means. Conclusion Measuring ASP.NET output cache is not complex thing to do and you can start by measuring performance of cache as a start. Later you can move on and measure caching effect to other counters such as disk I/O, network, processors etc. What you have to achieve is optimal cache that is not full of items asked only couple of times per day (you can avoid this by not using too long cache durations). After some tuning you should be able to boost cache hit ratio up to at least 85%.

• SQL SERVER – Why Do We Need Data Quality Services – Importance and Significance of Data Quality Services (DQS)

  Databases are awesome.  I’m sure my readers know my opinion about this – I have made SQL Server my life’s work after all!  I love technology and all things computer-related.  Of course, even with my love for technology, I have to admit that it has its limits.  For example, it takes a human brain to notice that data has been input incorrectly.  Computer “brains” might be faster than humans, but human brains are still better at pattern recognition.  For example, a human brain will notice that “300” is a ridiculous age for a human to be, but to a computer it is just a number.  A human will also notice similarities between “P. Dave” and “Pinal Dave,” but this would stump most computers. In a database, these sorts of anomalies are incredibly important.  Databases are often used by multiple people who rely on this data to be true and accurate, so data quality is key.  That is why the improved SQL Server features Master Data Management talks about Data Quality Services.  This service has the ability to recognize and flag anomalies like out of range numbers and similarities between data.  This allows a human brain with its pattern recognition abilities to double-check and ensure that P. Dave is the same as Pinal Dave. A nice feature of Data Quality Services is that once you set the rules for the program to follow, it will not only keep your data organized in the future, but go to the past and “fix up” any data that has already been entered.  It also allows you do combine data from multiple places and it will apply these rules across the board, so that you don’t have any weird issues that crop up when trying to fit a round peg into a square hole. There are two parts of Data Quality Services that help you accomplish all these neat things.  The first part is DQL Server, which you can think of as the hardware component of the system.  It is installed on the side of (it needs to install separately after SQL Server is installed) SQL Server and runs quietly in the background, performing all its cleanup services. DQS Client is the user interface that you can interact with to set the rules and check over your data.  There are three main aspects of Client: knowledge base management, data quality projects and administration.  Knowledge base management is the part of the system that allows you to set the rules, or program the “knowledge base,” so that your database is clean and consistent. Data Quality projects are what run in the background and clean up the data that is already present.  The administration allows you to check out what DQS Client is doing, change rules, and generally oversee the entire process.  The whole process is user-friendly and a pleasure to use.  I highly recommend implementing Data Quality Services in your database.   we are building a web front end for a internet access token management system that uses radius (freeradius) queried from a captive portal. Reason for building this part is the integration into the accounting and billing platform that operates behind the scenes (all other parts are currently available open source software) The structure is fairly standard, and setting up the basic bits were easy enough (authentication, traffic updates from the captive portal, account expiry date/times) - but I seem to have run out of ability when it comes to limiting an account by traffic consumed. So we can: set up usernames / passwords set expiry dates/times for a given user see the traffic for that user being accurately updated in RADACCT But we can't figure out the correct way/attribute to expire a user when they have consumed X octets of traffic. What attributes are used, or - maybe more accurately - what would be the correct way to use these attributes to limit an account to a certain volume of traffic? Any links to documentation appreciated - freeradius documentation doesn't seem to address the issue directly, or I'm looking in the wrong place... --mark

• Flexible traffic & bandwidth monitor

  I have looked around, but have not found anything to meet our needs. I need something that can log all connections & bandwidth consumption. We need it for analysis: by protocol, source IP (& MAC if possible), destination, etc. Ideally we are looking for something that can produce custom graphs & also uses mysql. All connections go through one server on a bridged connection (2 network cards) so it is easy to pickup traffic. We are not concerned so much with internal LAN traffic as what passes in & out to the firewall. Thanks for you suggestions. Update: I use Ubuntu 10.04

• Good experiences with bulk rate SMS providers?

  We're a pretty popular service, our users are currently sending 100000+ SMS messages (projected 180k this month, and continuing to grow) per month. We're currently using a primary domestic provider that doesn't provide bulk rates and doesn't provide short code access. We're using a few backup providers as well for max redundancy, but aren't thrilled by 'em. We're ideally looking for a service that provides good bulk rates/incentives, good uptime/redundancy/reputation, easy API-integration (including respectable error codes!) ;). Right now, we're looking primarily for a domestic US SMS solution, but aren't averse to using the same provider for both International & US. For those of you using bulk SMS right now - what are your recommendations, experiences, etc. in the bulk SMS domain? It sounds like I'm looking for a golden unicorn here, I know, but any data/recommendations/warnings you've got are helpful!

We have run into customers opting to store a document folder path as a document metadata field. They have their reasons, half of the ECM community will agree with them, and the other half would raise an eye brow. In the end, they are getting creative to achieve their document management goals. The below steps outlines how to create a Global Rule that would store a document’s folder path in a custom metadata field: Create a Global Rule via Configuration Manager > Rules Tab > Add Then check “Is global rule with priority”. Then check “Use rule activation condition”.   Hi, I'm trying to fetch emails programmatically from Exchange 2003 over POP. As a proof of concept I'm trying to connect using openssl s_client. I've started the POP service on my Exchange server. Trying to connect using openssl s_client -connect MYEXCHANGESERVER:995 returns 20303:error:140790E5:SSL routines:SSL23_WRITE:ssl handshake failure:s23_lib.c:188: Trying openssl s_client -connect MYEXCHANGESERVER:995 -starttls pop3 returns CONNECTED(00000003) write:errno=32 Forgive a newb - I'm basically shooting wildly in the dark with no idea on what I'm supposed to be doing. In the past I've read my GMail over openssl s_client, and setting up those certificates was easy and well documented. I would imagine I need to set up some sort of certificate here as well, and I've looked a bit at using a .pfx file. But like I said, I'm completely lost here. Thankful for any advice, Andreas

• Is It Possible To Recover A Partial LVM Logical Volume?

  Background It is an Ubuntu 12.04 VirtualBox VM with 5 virtual HDDs (VDI), NOTE this is just a test VM, so not well planned ahead: ubuntu.vdi for / (/dev/mapper/ubuntu-root AKA /dev/ubuntu/root) and /home (/dev/mapper/ubuntu-home) weblogic.vdi - /dev/sdb (mounted on /bea for weblogic and other stuff) btrfs1.vdi - /dev/sdc (part of btrfs -m raid1 -d raid1 configuration) btrfs2.vdi - /dev/sdd (part of btrfs -m raid1 -d raid1 configuration) more.vdi - /dev/sde (added this virtual HDD because / ran out of inodes and it wasn't easy to figure out what to delete so as to free up inodes, so I just added the new virtual HDD, created PV, added it to existing volume group ubuntu, grew the root logical volume to work around the inode issue -_-) What happened? Last Friday, before finishing up I wanted to free up some disk space on that box, for some reason I thought the more.vdi was useless and tried to detach it from the VM, I then clicked delete (should have clicked keep files damn!) by mistake when detaching. Unfortunately I didn't have backup for it. All too late. What I have tried Tried to undelete (use testdisk and photorec) the vdi files but it takes too long and recovered heaps of .vdi files that I didn't want (huge, filled the disk, damn!). I finally gave up. Fortunately most of data is on separate ext4 partition and btrfs volumes. Out of curiosity, I still tried to mount the logical volumes and see if it is possible to at least recover the /var and /etc I tried to use system rescue cd to boot and activate the volume groups, I got: Couldn't find device with uuid xxxx. Refusing activation of the partial LV root. Use --partial to override. 1 logical volume(s) in volume group "ubuntu" now active. I was able to mount home LV but not root LV. I am wondering if it is possible to access the root LV any more. Under the bonnet, data (on LV root - /) was striped to more.vdi (PV), I know it's almost impossible to to recover. But I am still curious about how system administrator/DevOps guys deal with this sort of situation;-) Thanks in advance.

  I work as a consultant in a medium-sized firm. We need to keep track of time spent on individual tasks and which customers to bill to. Our current system for doing this is an old in-house system, that needs to be retired for various reasons. Most developers don't like registering time, so I am looking for the best tool for this job, that minimizes the time needed to register time. Must have features: Must be simple and easy to use. Must have reporting feature to use for billing. Must have an API, so we can integrate in-house tools. Registering time should be based on hours worked (ie. today, worked on Customer A, Task B from 8 AM to 12 AM). TFS integration is a plus, but not needed (ie. register time on a work item) May be open source or a paid product; doesn't really matter. What would you recommend ?

  I have an Excel Spreadsheet with a ZIP code column. For some dumb reason the original spreadsheet I got had all the zip codes stored as numbers, so a ZIP code like 01234 was stored as 1234. Easy to fix with "Format Column" as "Special = ZIP Code". All values like 1234, show up as 01234. Great! When I import it into Word via Mail Merge (to print address labels), the ZIP codes on all the addresses starting with a leading zero (like 01234) revert to their old form (1234). How do I fix this?

• LAMP stack security question - uploading files to server

  I am running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop on my home machine. I need to upload files from my local machine, to my web server, on a periodic basis. My server is running Ubuntu Server LTS. I want my server to be secure, and only run the LAMP stack and possibly, an email server. I do not (ideally) want to have FTP or anything that can allow (more) knowledgeable hackers to be able to hack into my server. Can anyone recommend how I may send files from my local machine to the server? This may seem an easy/trivial question, but I am relatively new to Linux - and I got my previous Windows server machine serious hacked in the past, hence the move to Linux, and thats why I am so security conscious.
