  • Setting the Timezone with an automated script

    I'm writing scripts to automate setting up new slicehost installations. In a perfect world, after I started the script, it would just run, with no attention from me. I have succeeded, with one exception. How do I set the timezone, in a permanent (survive reboot) and sane (adjust for standard and daylight savings time, so no just forcing the date) ... manner that doesn't require input from me? Currently, I'm using dpkg-reconfigure tzdata This doesn't seem to have any way to force parameters into it. It demands user input. EDIT: I'm editing here, rather than commenting, since comments don't seem to allow code blocks. Here's the actual code I ended up with, based on Rudedog's comment below. I also noticed that this doesn't update /etc/timezone. I'm not certain who uses that, but in case anybody does, I'm setting that too.   • Snow Leopard Permissions in Shared Folders reset on saving file

    I have several users who access their accounts on OSX through their windows machines over samba. As soon as they update/save a file, it sets the permissions to -rwxr----- which means no other users can read the files. This affects apache user, for example, so changes to their files under their Sites directory means Apache can no longer serve the pages. I've looked into /etc/smb.conf, /var/db/smb.conf, and /var/db/samba/smb.shares but I can't figure out how to force it to use the parent folders permissions. Thanks in advance.

My symbol path is pointing to msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols. Is there way to know what arguments were passed to this method? In general, how does one use Windbg to find the input argument value to the method call? thanks in advance

    I want to build a custom document management web application that ties in with sharepoint for the actual document versioning and storage. I'm hoping for something like a sharepoint widget that I can plug into my web application that would allow me to tie in with sharepoint and download documents, make edits to them, and upload them back to sharepoint, with sharepoint handling all of the versioning and storage.   • vim default save is no file type? default setting advisable?

    I just came across a problem that I seemed to have found a solution, but was a little surprised by the issue. In gVim, when I save a new document (new from "within" gVim), ala :w afile I realized it saves with I guess no file format, and thus is not visible in iPhone's PlainText app. Solution seems to be, save using :w afile.txt then the problem seems solved. Is this a good way to solve it? Should I change a default somewhere, either in Windows or _gvimrc file? I may consider doing some TeX'ing in vim at some point, so perhaps a default that allows for overriding in saving, and doesn't force txt when opening "any of all" documents.

  • xorg DPMS off: keep VT from turning screen back on

    I have an embedded board with a small UPS. When AC power goes down, I need to turn off all power hungry devices in order to have a clean shutdown. First thing I do, is set DPMS to force powerdown, then go through the usual SIGTERM/SIGKILL/umount sequence. I have an Intel i915 Display adapter connected to an LVDS LCD panel. Unfortunately, when Xorg dies, Xserver or the VT code turn the LCD panel back on. I even tried working around it by directly poking the panel enable register in the Display chip, so that X doesn't know about it, but the panel goes back on when the VT comes back. Is there any "legal" way of keeping the display off? Thank you

    A Windows Server 2003 R2 has the following hard disk configuration: - 3 internal hard disks attached to a 3Ware unit, configured in Raid 1 + spare unit - 3 external USB backup disks: 2 Verbatim 1TB (Samsung HD103SI) + 1 Western Digital 1TB (WD10EADS) The server runs 365 days per year, h24, however: - at daytime the server/user usage is limited to the internal hard disks - at nighttime there's no user usage, apart from scheduled maintenance tasks, basically the Server will be idle from 7PM to 8AM. apart from nighly backups (few hours). I was wondering if: (a) it makes any sense let Windows manage power savings, allowing disks to spin down accordingly, ** OR** let the disks stay awlays-on, to avoid permature wearing, due to continuous spin up/down (b) leave internal disks always on, and force external disks to power down while idle (this requires third party tools, such as Verbatim's Green button utility) Your thoughts?
