  So I am working on an assignment where I have to have a print method in a constructor that displays a distance. I also have to have three separate get methods depending on what the input is in the demo class. • Mysql - wondering about scaling a twitter-like application ?

  Hi, I'm developing an app that is vaguely similar to twitter, in that it allows users to follow one another. I wanted to do this using google app engine, for its scalability promises, but it's proving kind of difficult to get running for a few different reasons. I'd basically like to have a _users table, and a _followers table. Users go into the users table, follower relationships go into _followers. The problem is that each row in the users table will probably have like 100 corresponding records in the _followers table as users start following one another. So the number of rows is going to explode quickly. Using app engine, the volume [shouldn't] be a problem. If I go with mysql, and I do actually start to get some traction, how do I scale this up? Am I going to just end up moving to a distributed database in the end anyway? Should I fight it out with google app engine? I read that Twitter was using mysql, and they've run into this problem, and are now switching to cassandra. Thanks

  I currently try printing out text on multiple pages. For this, I count the number of rows and when they reach a fixed amount a method called pagebreakis executed. • Why doesn't Win Forms application update label immediately?

  I am doing some experimenting with threads, and made a 'control' method to compare against where all the processing happens in the UI thread. It should run a method, which will update a label at the end. This method runs four times, but the labels are not updated until all 4 have completed. I expected one label to get updated about every 2 seconds. • Sorting page flow for has_many in Rails

  I have a page flow allowing the user to choose an object ("Player") to add to a has_many :players association in another model. 1 => List existing players for object [Enter player name] 2 => List of matching players [Select player] 3 => Confirmation page [Press 'Add'] 4 => Done I want users to be able to choose "New Player" instead of selecting a player at step 2, in which case the user will go through the standard New Player process elsewhere on the site. However, after that's done, the user should return to step 3 with the new player in place. I don't know what the best way is to implement this. I don't want to duplicate the player creation code, but I don't want to dirty up the player creation code too much just for this case. I also don't want to start sticking IDs in the session if I can help it. It's fine in simple cases but if the user ever has two windows/tabs then things start behaving badly. What do you think?

• PHP cookies in a session handler

  I have run into a very interesting problem trying to debug my custom php session handler. For some reason unknown to me I can set cookies all the way through the session handler right up until the very start of the write function. • Opening up process and grabbing window title. Where did I go wrong?

  In my application I allow for the users to add a program from a open file dialog, and it then adds the item to a listview and saves the items location into the tag. So what I am trying to do is when the program in the listview is selected and the button is pressed, it starts a timer and this timer checks to see if the process is running, and if it isn't launches the process, and once the process is launched it gets the window title of the process and sends it to a textbox on another form. EDIT: The question is if anyone can see why it is not working, by this I mean starting the process, then when it's started closing the form and adding the process window title to a textbox on another form. I have tried to get it working but I can't. I know that the process name it is getting is right I think my problem is to do with my for loop. Basically it isn't doing anything visible right now. I feel like I am very close with my code and im hoping it just needs a couple minor tweaks. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if my coding practices aren't that great, im pretty new to this. EDIT:I thought I found a solution but it only works now if the process has been started already. It won't start it up. • Why can’t I create a database in an empty ASP MVC 2 project using Project->Add->New Item->SQL Server

  I'm diving head first into ASP MVC and am playing around with creating and manipulating a database. I did a search and found this tutorial for creating a database, however when I follow it, I get this error right at the start when trying to add a new database to my fresh, empty ASP MVC 2 project... A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) The only requirement the tutorial mentioned was SQL Server Express, but when I went to download it, it said it was already installed. I'm assuming it was part of the VS 2010 RC I installed and am running. So I don't know what else I need if I am missing something. This is all new to me, so I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here and after I'm done posting this question, I plan to do some more research into the topic of databases and how they work with ASP MVC. In the meantime, I was you could help me answer a couple high level questions... What am I missing/forgetting to do that is causing this error? Any suggestions for good resources/tutorials that focus on using databases with ASP MVC? I've done a lot of database programming in the past, so I'm familiar with the concepts of relational databases and the SQL language. I wish I could find a good resource for learning how to work with them in an ASP dev environment, as well as a good breakdown of all the related technologies used for working with them (i.e. LINQ to SQL). • Weird flex date issue

  Flex is driving me CRAZY and I think it's some weird gotcha with how it handles leap years and none leap years. So here's my example. I have the below dateDiff method that finds the number of days or milliseconds between two dates. If I run the following three statements I get some weird issues. dateDiff("date", new Date(2010, 0,1), new Date(2010, 0, 31)); dateDiff("date", new Date(2010, 1,1), new Date(2010, 1, 28)); dateDiff("date", new Date(2010, 2,1), new Date(2010, 2, 31)); dateDiff("date", new Date(2010, 3,1), new Date(2010, 3, 30)); If you were to look at the date comparisons above you would expect to get 30, 27, 30, 29 as the number of days between the dates. There weird part is that I get 29 when comparing March 1 to March 31. Why is that? Is it something to do with February only having 28 days? • MonoTouch's Soft Debugger don't connect to App on iPhone - why?

  Hi everyone, I'm quite new on MonoTouch, so please forgive me my question in doubt... ;-) I need help with the soft-debugger, because it's not connecting to the App on the device. While with iPhone Simulator everything is working as expected, the following happens when I start debugging against my device: The is uploaded and installed to the device. MonoDevelop comes up with a window saying the following: "Waiting for debugger to connect on 127.0.0.1:10000..." Please start the application on the device" When starting the app on the device, the device vibrates indicating that the debugger is not connected.... In the settings of my App on the iPhone I have set the IP-Adress to my Mac's IP. My iPhone is connected via WIFI to my network. I can ping my Mac from my iPhone and vice versa. In several screenshots where the debugger was obviously working I saw that the debugger came up with the Mac's IP address and not the 127.0.0.1.... Do I have to configure my IP-address somewhere in MonoDevelop? BTW: I'm using the latest version of MonoDevelop - it's 2.4.1 I have tried anything.... re-installing MonoDevelop, cleaning up the project several times, setting up a new project.... nothing... Please, please help....

• Tools for debugging when debugger can't get you there?

  I have a fairly complex (approx 200,000 lines of C++ code) application that has decided to crash, although it crashes a little differently on a couple of different systems. The trick is that it doesn't crash or trap out in debugger. It only crashes when the application .EXE is run independently (either the debug EXE or the release EXE - both behave the same way). When it crashes in the debug EXE, and I get it to start debugging, the call stack is buried down into the windows/MFC part of things, and isn't reflecting any of my code. Perhaps I'm seeing a stack corruption of some sort, but I'm just not sure at the moment. My question is more general - it's about tools and techniques. I'm an old programmer (C and assembly language days), and a relative newcomer (couple/few years) to C++ and Visual Studio (2003 for this projecT). Are there tricks or techniques anyone's had success with in tracking down crashing issues when you cannot make the software crash in a debugger session? Stuff like permission issues, for example? The only thing I've thought of is to start plugging in debug/status messages to a logfile, but that's a long, hard way to go. Been there, done that. Any better suggestions? Am I missing some tools that would help? Is VS 2008 better for this kind of thing? Thanks for any guidance. Some very smart people here (you know who you are!). cheers.

I am trying to make a string from that includes a preference int. • Looking for a book which teaches how to write applications (as opposed to writng code)

  I am not a developer. I have coded for fun and for university projects in several languages, and during an internship, I have written code which is still in use by a department of Fortune Global 500 company. I also have extensive theoretical knowledge of software engineering - process models, architecture, project management, UI construction using Lauesen's virtual windows... you get the picture. But I am not involved with software development in my job. I recently decided to start coding for fun again, and now I have some free days to do it. But this time, I want to do it right. I want to write a real, useful application, install it on my devices and use it myself. Also I want to publish it for others to use, should they want to do so. I am vaguely aware that there is more to writing an application than to writing code. There is stuff like version control software, decision for the right IDE, having a suite of unit tests, producing an installation package - and probably lots of other things I never thought of but which must be taken care of in a proper application, as opposed to a bunch of classes I am running from my IDE. All this is stuff I should know before I start, but I have not learned it. Coding books touch on some of the subjects like IDE choice, but don't go into detail, and are not exhaustive. Theoretical software engineering textbooks are even less helpful. So is there a book which teaches exactly that? I know that I can find information on each of these topics on the Internet, but I'd rather have a systematic book exhaustively listing all the things I should take care of if I want to create a good application, and offering the currently accepted solutions for them. In the best case, it will be language- and platform independent, but if you know of a good book focusing on a specific platform, I would like to know about it too. I know I want a lot, but given how important such knowledge is and how many people need it, surely somebody must have written such a book?

• What's a good starting point, tutorial, or project, to learn database programming?

  I've been a Software Developer now for over 10 years. I've mostly worked in Embedded C with some time spent on C++ (limited) and Java. I'm looking to learn some new technologies and skills. I thought that database programming may be interesting to learn. I would like to make my own pet project in order to learn these things. My platform of choice is Windows but can work in Linux also. My ideal pet project would involve a GUI and some network/internet programming also which I have some experience doing. I wouldn't mind getting into C# but don't want to bite off more than I can chew right now as my spare time is limited. If I understand correctly SQLite allows for programs to use a database without running an ODBC server. Is this correct? Is that a good place to start? What can I do to start that is not too complicated but not so simple that I won't learn the details also? Your opinions and feedback would be appreciated.

No problem, I just went ahead and did this: bool? isReviewingValue= ViewState["IsReviewing"] as bool?; if (isReviewingValue.HasValue) { return isReviewingValue.Value; } Question is: Besides looking a bit more readable, is this in fact better? EDIT: So this is getting more interesting. I decided to test it using a simple stopwatch and turns out that the second is much faster... Which after reading some of the responses here I didn't expect at all. I was thinking for sure my way was much slower.   i have some text box in a page and in the same page there will be a table 'grid' like for holding the search result. When the user start editing and of the textbox above, the search must start by sending all textboxs values to the server 'ajax', and get back with the results to fill the below grid. Notes: This grid should support paging, sorting by clicking on headers and it will contains some controls beside the results such as checkboxs for boolean values and links for opening details in another page. I know many ways to do this some of them are: 1- updatepanel around all of these controls and thats it "fast dirty solution" 2- send the search criteria using ajax request using JQuery post function for example and get back the JSON result, and using a template will draw the grid "clean but will take time to finish and will be harder to edit later". 3- .... My question is: What do you think will be the best choice to implement this scenario? because i face this scenario too much, and want to know which implementation will be better regarding performance, optimization, and time to finish. I just want to know your thoughts about this issue.

• Combine MD5 hashes of multiple files

  I have 7 files that I'm generating MD5 hashes for. The hashes are used to ensure that a remote copy of the data store is identical to the local copy. Unfortunately, the link between these two copies of the data is mind numbingly slow. Changes to the data are very rare but I have a requirement that the data be synchronized at all times (or as soon as possible). Rather than passing 7 different MD5 hashes across my (extremely slow) communications link, I'd like to generate the hash for each file and then combine these hashes into a single hash which I can then transfer and then re-calculate/use for comparison on the remote side. If the "combined hash" differs, then I'd start sending the 7 individual hashes to determine exactly which file(s) have been changed. For example, here are the MD5 hashes for the 7 files as of last week: 0709d609d69385255c496436eb50402c 709465a74411bd596595c7b9b158ae6a 4ab657320ef33e3d5eb498e4c13d41b7 3b49c6ab199994fd776bb63761414e72 0fc28c5a010fc3c06c0c930c88e31a15 c4ecd214662cac5aae0e53f6f252bf0e 8b086431e43148a2c2d943ba30d31cc6 I'd like to combine these hashes together such that I get a single unique value (perhaps another MD5 hash?) that I can then send to the remote system. On the remote system, I'd then perform the same calculation to determine if the data as a whole has been changed. If it has, then I'd start sending the individual hashes, etc. The most important factor is that my "combined hash" be short enough so that it uses less bandwidth than just sending all 7 hashes in the first place. I thought of writing the 7 MD5 hashes to a file and then hashing that file but is there a better way?

• Starting a personal reuasable code repository.

  Hi, I've been meaning to start a library of reusable code snippets for a while and never seem to get round to it. At the moment I just tend to have some transient classes/files that I drag out of old projects. I think my main problems are: Where to start. What structure should my repository take? Should it be a compiled library (where appropriate) or just classes/files I can drop into any project? Or a library project that can be included? What are the licencing implications of that? In my experience, a built/minified library will quickly become out of date and the source will get lost. So I'm leaning towards source that I can export from SVN and include in any project. Intellectual property. I am employeed, so a lot of the code I write is not my IP. How can I ensure that I don't give my own IP away using it on projects in work and at home? I'm thinking the best way would be to licence my library with an open source licence and make sure I only add to it in my own time using my own equipment and therefore making sure that if I use it in a work project the same rules apply as if I was using a third party library. I write in many different languages and often would require two or more parts of this library. Should I look at implementing a few template projects and a core project for each of my chosen reusable components and languages? Has anyone else got this sort of library and how do you organise and update it?

• What's a good way to organize a large collection of personal scripts using git?

  I have a large collection of my personal scripts that I would like to start versioning using Git. I've previously organized my code as follows: ~/code/python/projects/ (for large stuff, each project contained in an individual folder) ~/code/python/scripts/ (single file scripts all contained in this directory) ~/code/python/sandbox/ (my testing area) ~/code/python/docs/ (downloaded documentation) ~/code/java/... (as above) Now i'm going to start versioning my code using git, so that I can have history and backup all my code to a remote server. I know if I were using SVN I would just keep my entire "~/code/" directory in a large repository, but I understand this is not a good way to do things with Git. Most info I've seen online suggests keeping all my project folders in a single place (as in, no separate directories for python or java) with each project containing it's own git repository, and simply having a "snippets" directory containing all single-file scripts/experiments that can be converted into projects at a later date. But I'm not sure how I feel about consolidating all of my code directories into one area. Is there a good way to keep my separate code directories intact, or is it not worth the effort? Maybe I'm just attached to the separate code directories because I've never known anything else... Also (as a side note), I'd like to quickly be able to see a chronological history of all my projects and scripts. So I can see which projects I created most recently. I used to do this by keeping a number at the beginning of all my projects, 002project, 003project. Is there automatic or easy way to do this in git without having to add a number to all of the project names? I'm open to any practical or philosophical code organizing advice you have. Thanks!!!

• Implementing deadlock condition

  I am trying to implementing deadlock condition but somehow I am not able to get it working. Both the threads Thread1 and Thread2 are entering in the run function but only one of them enters in Sub/Sum depending on who entered run first. Example : if Thread2 entered run first the it will call sub() and Thread1 never calls sum().   I have a policies in a system PolRef Start End POL123 22/11/2012 23/12/2014 POL212 24/09/2012 23/10/2012 POL214 23/08/2012 29/09/2012 I am asking a user for a reporting date, the user enters 24/10/2012 this becomes @StartDate From this I derive what the quarter is by the month: set @currentMonth = Month(@StartDate) if @currentMonth = 1 or @currentMonth = 2 or @currentMonth = 3 begin set @startmonth = 1 set @endmonth = 3 end if @currentMonth = 4 or @currentMonth = 5 or @currentMonth = 6 begin set @startmonth = 4 set @endmonth = 6 end if @currentMonth = 7 or @currentMonth = 8 or @currentMonth = 9 begin set @startmonth = 7 set @endmonth = 9 end if @currentMonth = 10 or @currentMonth = 11 or @currentMonth = 12 begin set @startmonth = 10 set @endmonth = 12 end I then get a date range: @quarterStartDate = CAST(CAST(YEAR(@StartDate) AS varchar) + '-' + CAST(@startMonth AS varchar) + '-' + '01') AS Date) @quarterEndDate = CAST(CAST(YEAR(@EcdDate) AS varchar) + '-' + CAST(@endMonth AS varchar) + '-' + '31') AS Date) This will give me 01-10-2012 and 31-12-2012. Basically I need a script to only bring back the policies that are in this quarter. The policy doesn't have to span the entire quarter date range, just exist in the quarter date range. The results expected would be PolRef Start End POL123 22/11/2012 23/12/2014 POL212 24/09/2012 23/10/2012 Pol123 appears because it spans over the quarterly date range. Pol212 is there because it expires in that quarter date range. Pol214 does not appear because it neither spans, expires or starts in this quarter. Any help would be greatly appreciated
