  I'm trying to optimize my MySQL config for a verrry small VPS. The VPS is also running NGINX/PHP-FPM and Magento; all with a limit of 250MB of RAM. And the Magento Site which consists of a lot of InnoDB tables, some MyISAM and some INMEMORY. The "read" side seems to be running pretty well with a mass of optimizations I've used on Magento, the NGINX setup and PHP-FPM + XCACHE. I'd love to have a kick in the right direction with the MySQL config so I'm not blindly altering it based on the MySQLTuner without understanding what I'm changing. Thanks

• Change default DNS server in Arch Linux

  I'm in Viet Nam and most social websites (Facebook, Twitter and the likes - even reddit) are blocked by the ISP DNS server. I tried to change the DNS server of my Arch box using the resolv.conf file, but it failed miserably since dhcpd generates this file automatically everytime I connect to the LAN. I've been looking around to try and find out how to fix this, without success. Either I s*ck at Googling, either it is non-trivial to do so. EDIT 1: Meh, apparently posting it here made me feel guilty and I had to push my search a bit more. I found the same article than Ankur post below. This is what I made, if anybody ever faces the same problem: $ sudo gvim /etc/dhcpcd.conf Add "nohook resolv.conf" at the tail of the file. $ sudo gvim /etc/resolv.conf Add to the file (OpenDNS servers): nameserver 208.67.222.222 nameserver 208.67.220.220 Or (Google DNS): nameserver 8.8.8.8 nameserver 8.8.4.4 Then, verify it worked (need package dnsutils): $ dig www.facebook.com ; <<>> DiG 9.9.1-P1 <<>> www.facebook.com ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 16994 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 1 ;; OPT PSEUDOSECTION: ; EDNS: version: 0, flags:; udp: 4096 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;www.facebook.com. On the line "inetnum": "122.4.0.0/14", What does it mean for the prefix to be 14? I am using this as a reference Subnet Mask Cheatsheet While resolving it, I get a very wide range which is something like 122.7.0.0-122.4.0.0 I am not able to understand how the IP range is calculate from the subnet mask and I am only able to find calculators online and not a method to solve it.

• Squid parent cache for text/html only

  How do I configure the squid to only request text/html to the parent cache; right now I am using : cache_peer 127.0.0.1 parent 8080 0 no-query no-digest on the second hand I get a lot of direct request that do not use the parent proxy: some queries go like FIRST_UP_PARENT and some like DIRECT, how do I tell the squid to always use parent for text/html BTW .. is a transparent proxy I have tried : cache_peer 127.0.0.1 parent 8080 0 no-query no-digest acl elhtml req_mime_type -i ^text/html$ acl elhtml req_mime_type -i text/html cache_peer_access 127.0.0.1 allow elhtml cache_peer_access 127.0.0.1 deny all and it does not works Thanks in advance for the help.

• apache2 and php slow first load on Ubuntu VPS - something like mysqltuner but for apache?

  Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit VPS, 512Mb dedicated RAM. Mysql tuned so that sqltuner is completely happy. Used RAM never above 350Mb out of the 493 available. Load never exceeds 1.04 or so. httpd.conf tuned as per all the guides for vps of that memory - amount of preforks, spares etc. But for the FIRST load a site after having not visited for a while, it's taking ages. First load: Parse Time: 3.576 - Number of Queries: 50 - Query Time: 0.019723195953369 Reload Parse Time: 0.096 - Number of Queries: 39 - Query Time: 0.0066126374511719 Subsequent reloads will be at this speed. htop shows two items as soon as I load that page for the first time: php-cgi /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start I'm using suPHP but I've tried fast-cgi and cgi. Stuck now, a weekend of tweaking has brought me nothing. Advice appreciated.

  The sys.dm_db_stats_properties Dynamic Management Function returns information about the statistics that are currently on your database objects. This function takes two parameters, an object_id and a stats_id. Let’s have a look at the result set from this function against the AdventureWorks2012.Sales.SalesOrderHeader table. To obtain the object_id and stats_id I will use a CROSS APPLY with the sys.stats system table. SELECT sp.* FROM sys.stats s CROSS APPLY sys.dm_db_stats_properties(s.object_id, s.Stats_id) sp WHERE sp.object_id = object_id('Sales.SalesOrderHeader') The first two columns returned by this function are the object_id and the stats_id columns. The next column, ‘last_updated’, gives you the date and the time that a particular statistic was last updated. The next column, ‘rows’, gives you the total number of rows in the table as of the last statistic update date. The ‘rows_sampled’ column gives you the number of rows that were sampled to create the statistic. The ‘steps’ column represents the number of specific value ranges from the statistic histogram. The ‘unfiltered_rows’ column represents the number of rows before any filters are applied. If a particular statistic is not filtered, the ‘unfiltered_rows’ column will always equal the ‘rows’ column. Lastly we have the ‘modification_counter’ column which represents the number of modification to the leading column in a given statistic since the last time the statistic was updated. Probably the most important column from this Dynamic Management Function is the ‘last_updated’ column. You want to always ensure that you have accurate and updated statistics on your database objects. Accurate statistics are vital for the query optimizer to generate efficient and reliable query execution plans. Without accurate and updated statistics, the performance of your SQL Server would likely suffer. • Mac OSX Server 10.6 DNS Issues

  Hi, The server was upgraded from 10.5 from 10.6, during the upgrade the Reverse Zones were lost so I tried to recreate these but found that it's best to delete all zones, definitions and start again. So I've started again and Reverse Zones are appearing but I'm still having issues.   I have 1 master mysql process, and 2 slave. Today on both slaves i see : Error 'Table 'bgbilling.contract_status_balance_dump' already exists' on query. Default database: 'bgbilling'. Query: 'CREATE TABLE contract_status_balance_dump( UNIQUE(cid) ) SELECT cid, MAX(yy*12+(mm-1))%12 + 1 AS mm,FLOOR(MAX(yy*12+(mm-1)) / 12) AS yy FROM contract_balance GROUP BY cid' "show tables" does not show this table. I tryed stop slave , and do "drop table contract_status_balance_dump" but: ERROR 1051 (42S02): Unknown table 'contract_status_balance_dump' How its possible? And how fix that?

  Alberto Ferrari wrote an interesting article about DIVIDE performance in DAX. This new function has been introduced in SQL Server Analysis Services 2012 SP1, so it is available also in Excel 2013 (which still doesn’t have other features/fixes introduced by following Cumulative Updates…). The idea that instead of writing: IF ( Sales[Quantity] <> 0, Sales[Amount] / Sales[Quantity], BLANK () ) you can write: DIVIDE ( Sales[Amount], Sales[Quantity] ) There is a third optional argument in DIVIDE that defines the result in case the denominator (second argument) is zero, and by default its value is BLANK, so I omitted the third argument in my example. Using DIVIDE is very important, especially when you use a measure in MDX (for example in an Excel PivotTable) because it raise the chance that the non empty evaluation for the result is evaluated in bulk mode instead of cell-by-cell. However, from a DAX point of view, you might find it’s better to use the standard division operator removing the IF statement. I suggest you to read Alberto’s article, because you will find that an expression applying a filter using FILTER is faster than using CALCULATE, which is against any rule of thumb you might have read until now! Again, this is not always true, and depends on many conditions – trying to simplify, we might say that for a simple calculation, the query plan generated by FILTER could be more efficient – but, as usual, it depends, and 90% of the times using FILTER instead of CALCULATE produces slower performance. Do not take anything for granted, and always check the query plan when performance are your first issue!

• Fixing Chrome&rsquo;s AJAX Request Caching Bug

  I recently had to make a set of web pages restore their state when the user arrived on them after clicking the browser’s back button. The pages in question had various content loaded in response to user actions, which meant I had to manually get them back into a valid state after the page loaded. I got hold of the page’s data in a JavaScript ViewModel using a JQuery ajax call, then iterated over the properties, filling in the fields as I went. I built in the ability to describe dependencies between inputs to make sure fields were filled in in the correct order and at the correct time, and that all worked nicely. To make sure the browser didn’t cache the AJAX call results I used the JQuery’s cache: false option, and ASP.NET MVC’s OutputCache attribute for good measure. That all worked perfectly… except in Chrome. Chrome insisted on retrieving the data from its cache. cache: false adds a random query string parameter to make the browser think it’s a unique request – it made no difference. I made the AJAX call a POST – it made no difference. Eventually what I had to do was add a random token to the URL (not the query string) and use MVC routing to deliver the request to the correct action. • SQL Server Maintenence Plan error on an offline Database

  Today is SQL day for me :) I have a maintenance plan that is failing to run with the following error: Failed:(-1073548784) Executing the query "USE [SharedServices1_DB]" failed with the following error: "Database 'SharedServices1_DB' cannot be opened because it is offline.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly. where SharedServices1_DB is a database that is set to offline. I would like to exclude this database from the maintenance plan, but when the database is offline, it does not show up at all as a "specific database" in the maintenance plan task, and if I bring it online, it is already unchecked in the maintenance plan task. How can I exclude an offline database from a maintenance plan?

I want this server to be a sort of a "wrapper" over my default server, so that it will respond to "domain_name.My_TLD" itself and forward requests to any other request. The server resides in a domain (Disconnected from the internet), so I configured it to zone "company_domain."{ type forward; forwarders { 1.2.3.4 }; #the DC's ip }; When i query it about sommething.company_domain. it sends a query to the DC and gets a response, but it returns "server failure". • Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

  I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset. • Back up a single table in SQL Server

  SQL Server doesn’t have an easy way to take a table backup, so I often use the bcp (Bulk Copy Program) to accomplish the same goal. I’ve mentioned this before, and someone told me when they tried it they couldn’t restore the table – ah the dangers of telling people half the information! I should have mentioned that you need to have a “format file” ready if the table does not exist at the destination. In my case I already had the table, in this person’s case they did not. The format file can be used to rebuild that table structure before the data is bcp’d in, and you can read more about it here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191516.aspx There’s another way to back up a table, and that’s to create a Filegroup and place the table there. Then you can take a Filegroup backup to back up a single table. Of course, there are other methods of moving a single table’s data in an out, including SQL Server Integration Services and even the older Data Transformation Services, or simply by using hte SQLCMD or PowerShell utilities to run a query and just save the output to a file. In fact, these days I’m using a PowerShell script to build INSERT statements from that query. That could also easily be modified to create the table structure (or modify one if needed) quite easily. • Introduction to LinqPad Driver for StreamInsight 2.1

  We are announcing the availability of the LinqPad driver for StreamInsight 2.1. The purpose of this blog post is to offer a quick introduction into the new features that we added to the StreamInsight LinqPad driver. We’ll show you how to connect to a remote server, how to inspect the entities present of that server, how to compose on top of them and how to manage their lifetime. Installing the driver Info on how to install the driver can be found in an earlier blog post here. Establishing connections As you click on the “Add Connection” link in the left pane you will notice that now it’s possible to build the data context automatically. The new driver appears as an option in the upper list, and if you pick it you will open a connection dialog that lets you connect to a remote StreamInsight server. The connection dialog lets you specify the address of the remote server. You will notice that it’s possible to pick up the binding information from the configuration file of the LinqPad application (which is normally in the same folder as LinqPad.exe and is called LinqPad.exe.config). In order for the context to be generated you need to pick an application from the server. The control is editable hence you can create a new application if you don’t want to make changes to an existing application. If you choose a new application name you will be prompted for confirmation before this gets created. Once you click OK the connection is created and you can start issuing queries against the remote server. If there’s any connectivity error the connection is marked with a red X and you can see the error message informing you what went wrong (i.e., the remote server could not be reached etc.). The context for remote servers Let’s take a look at what happens after we are connected successfully. Every LinqPad query runs inside a context – think of it as a class that wraps all the code that you’re writing. If you’re connecting to a live server the context will contain the following: The application object itself. All entities present in this application (sources, sinks, subjects and processes). The picture below shows a snapshot of the left pane of LinqPad after a successful connection. Every entity on the server has a different icon which will allow users to figure out its purpose. You will also notice that some entities have a string in parentheses following the name. It should be interpreted as such: the first name is the name of the property of the context class and the second name is the name of the entity as it exists on the server. Not all valid entity names are valid identifier names so in cases where we had to make a transformation you see both. Note also that as you hover over the entities you get IntelliSense with their types – more on that later. Remoting is not supported As you play with the entities exposed by the context you will notice that you can’t read and write directly to/from them. If for instance you’re trying to dump the content of an entity you will get an error message telling you that in the current version remoting is not supported. This is because the entity lives on the remote server and dumping its content means reading the events produced by this entity into the local process. ObservableSource.Dump(); Will yield the following error: Reading from a remote 'System.Reactive.Linq.IQbservable`1[System.Int32]' is not supported. Use the 'Microsoft.ComplexEventProcessing.Linq.RemoteProvider.Bind' method to read from the source using a remote observer. This basically tells you that you can call the Bind() method to direct the output of this source to a sink that has to be defined on the remote machine as well. You can’t bring the results to the LinqPad window unless you write code specifically for that. Compose queries You may ask – what's the purpose of all that? After all the same information is present in the EventFlowDebugger, why bother with showing it in LinqPad? First of all, What gets exposed in LinqPad is not what you see in the debugger. In LinqPad we have a property on the context class for every entity that lives on the server. Because LinqPad offers IntelliSense we in fact have much more information about the entity, and more importantly we can compose with that entity very easily. For example, let’s say that this code creates an entity: using (var server = Server.Connect(...)) {     var a = server.CreateApplication("WhiteFish");     var src = a         .DefineObservable<int>(() => Observable.Range(0, 3))         .Deploy("ObservableSource"); If later we want to compose with the source we have to fetch it and then we can bind something to     a.GetObservable<int>("ObservableSource)").Bind(... This means that we had to know a bunch of things about this: that it’s a source, that it’s an observable, it produces a result with payload Int32 and it’s named “ObservableSource”. Only the second and last bits of information are present in the debugger, by the way. As you type in the query window you see that all the entities are present, you get IntelliSense support for them and it’s much easier to make sense of what’s available. Let’s look at a scenario where composition is plausible. With the new programming model it’s possible to create “cold” sources that are parameterized. There was a way to accomplish that even in the previous version by passing parameters to the adapters, but this time it’s much more elegant because the expression declares what parameters are required. Say that we hover the mouse over the ThrottledSource source – we will see that its type is Func<int, int, IQbservable<int>> - this in effect means that we need to pass two int parameters before we can get a source that produces events, and the type for those events is int – in the particular case of my example I had the source produce a range of integers and the two parameters were the start and end of the range. So we see how a developer can create a source that is not running yet. Then someone else (e.g. an administrator) can pass whatever parameters appropriate and run the process. Proxy Types Here’s an interesting scenario – what if someone created a source on a server but they forgot to tell you what type they used. Worse yet, they might have used an anonymous type and even though they can refer to it by name you can’t figure out how to use that type. Let’s walk through an example that shows how you can compose against types you don’t need to have the definition of. This is how we can create a source that returns an anonymous type: Application.DefineObservable(() => Observable.Range(1, 10).Select(i => new { I = i })).Deploy("O1"); Now if we refresh the connection we can see the new source named O1 appear in the list. But what’s more important is that we now have a type to work with. So we can compose a query that refers to the anonymous type. var threshold = new StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0<int>(5); var filter = from i in O1              where i > threshold              select i; filter.Deploy("O2"); You will notice that the anonymous type defined with this statement: new { I = i } can now be manipulated by a client that does not have access to it because the LinqPad driver has generated another type in its stead, named StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0. This type has all the properties and fields of the type defined on the server, except in this case we can instantiate values and use it to compose more queries. It is worth noting that the same thing works for types that are not anonymous – the test is if the LinqPad driver can resolve the type or not. If it’s not possible then a new type will be generated that approximates the type that exists on the server. Control metadata In addition to composing processes on top of the existing entities we can do other useful things. We can delete them – nothing new here as we simply access the entities through the Entities collection of the application class. Here is where having their real name in parentheses comes handy. There’s another way to find out what’s behind a property – dump its expression. The first line in the output tells us what’s the name of the entity used to build this property in the context. Runtime information So let’s create a process to see what happens. We can bind a source to a sink and run the resulting process. If you right click on the connection you can refresh it and see the process present in the list of entities. Then you can drag the process to the query window and see that you can have access to process object in the Processes collection of the application.   I'm installing sql instances through script, and after creating a certain instance, I cannot get the sa account to be enabled through osql. What I've tried osql -S .\INSTANCENAME -E use master ALTER LOGIN sa ENABLE GO Using SSMS to enable the account (by logging in using Windows Auth., 'New query', and exactly the same query as in 1.) Suggestions in this issue No. 2. is actually working; and the account is enabled instantly. No 1 is not working, not even with the suggestions provided in 3., I have restarted the SQL services after executing the commands in osql. Additional info Windows 2003 Server, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise, No password policies apply to the account.

• How to filter a mysql database with user input on a website and then spit the filtered table back to the website? [migrated]

  I've been researching this on google for literally 3 weeks, racking my brain and still not quite finding anything. I can't believe this is so elusive. (I'm a complete beginner so if my terminology sounds stupid then that's why.) I have a database in mysql/phpmyadmin on my web host. I'm trying to create a front end that will allow a user to specify criteria for querying the database in a way that they don't have to know sql, basically just combo boxes and checkboxes on a form. Then have this form 'submit' a query to the database, and show the filtered tables. I've tried google fusion tables - doesn't filter right with numerical data or empty cells in rows, can't relate tables I've tried DataTables.net, can't filter right with numerical data and can't use SQL without a bunch of indepth knowledge, not even sure it can if you have that.. I've looked into using jQuery with google spreadsheets, doesn't work at all either I have no idea how I'm supposed to build a front end with my database. Every place that looks promising (like zohocreator) is asking for money, and is far too simplified to be able to do the LIKE criteria or SELECT DISTINCT stuff.

  Hello, i am working with Social Networking iphone app which require remote data connection. So i hired a php developer in order to provide me RESTful services. But when i start working with him, he arguing me that he will not make stored procedures and web services. Instead of he suggested me to pass query as a parameter. Suppose If I have to call Search service, he told me to send POST request with 3 parameters: Query="select * from users", username=abd and password = 123 And i thing there is no such architecture in order to use remote data. Then he is saying it is possible through socket programming. And I am 100% sure this is not an appropriate way to access remote data. This is simply illogical. Thousands of iphone application using REST/SOAP services to make remote data connection He just declined me to provide RESTful services. Please its my heartily advice to all developers that post your own views over here. So that I can show to that developers that these are the views from all developers worldwide.

• What is the correct term for - server/client database sync via API?

  Forgive the vague question title. I've been programming mobile apps for 3 years now, and I've got a little too far from the web services and server side code then I probably should have. Anyway, I'm doing a personal project now and I want to create an web API for it. One of my requirements is to check for updates from my app, so I would send a timestamp to the API. I've used many APIs that my clients prepared for me and only now am I appreciating their work ! What is the term or technique used to create an API backed by a database which tracks changes via dates/timestamps, basically an effective way for me to query changes occurring since a timestamp. Simply put, I want that my app can call my API in order to sync new data and changed data from the server, to the app. The app would only have a timestamp of the last time it synced with the server. Would I have a log table for each data table in my database which adds a record for each change? Then I could query all changes with a timestamp superior to the one passed to the API. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this?

  Az Oracle Database 11g verziójától már OLTP adatbázisok is hatékonyan tömöríthetok az Advanced Compression funkcióval. Nem csak a tárolandó adatok mennyisége csökken ezáltal felére, vagy akár negyedére, de az adatbázis teljesítménye is javulhat, amennyiben I/O korlátos a rendszer (és általában az). Hogy pontosan mekkora tömörítés várható az Advanced Compression bevezetésével, az kiválóan becsülheto a Compression Advisor eszközzel. Ez nem csak az OLTP tömörítés mértékét, de 11gR2 verziótól kezdve a HCC tömörítés arányát is becsülni tudja, amely Exadata Database Machine, Pillar Axiom illetve ZFS Storage alkalmazásával érheto el. A HCC tömörítés becsléséhez csak 11gR2 adatbázisra van szükség, nem kell hozzá a speciális célhardver (Exadata, Pillar, ZFS). A Compression Advisor valójában a DBMS_COMPRESSION package használatával érheto el. A package-hez tartozik 6 konstans, amellyel a kívánt tömörítési szintek választhatók ki: Constant Type Value Description COMP_NOCOMPRESS NUMBER 1 No compression COMP_FOR_OLTP NUMBER 2 OLTP compression COMP_FOR_QUERY_HIGH NUMBER 4 High compression level for query operations COMP_FOR_QUERY_LOW NUMBER 8 Low compression level for query operations COMP_FOR_ARCHIVE_HIGH NUMBER 16 High compression level for archive operations COMP_FOR_ARCHIVE_LOW NUMBER 32 Low compression level for archive operations A GET_COMPRESSION_RATIO tárolt eljárás elemzi a tömöríteni kívánt táblát. Mindig csak egy táblát, vagy opcionálisan annak egy partícióját tudja elemezni úgy, hogy a tábláról készít egy másolatot egy külön erre a célra kijelölt/létrehozott táblatérre. Amennyiben az elemzést egyszerre több tömörítési szintre futtatjuk, úgy a tábláról annyi másolatot készít. A jó közelítésu becslés (+-5%) feltétele, hogy táblánként/partíciónként minimum 1 millió sor legyen. 11gR1 esetében még a DBMS_COMP_ADVISOR csomag GET_RATIO eljárása volt használatos, de ez még nem támogatta a HCC becslést. Érdemes még megnézni és kipróbálni a Tyler Muth blogjában publikált formázó eszközt, amivel a compression advisor kimenete alakítható jól értelmezheto formátumúvá. Végül összegezném mit is tartalmaz az Advanced Compression opció, mivel gyakran nem világos a felhasználóknak miért kell fizetni: Data Guard Network Compression Data Pump Compression (COMPRESSION=METADATA_ONLY does not require the Advanced Compression option) Multiple RMAN Compression Levels (RMAN DEFAULT COMPRESS does not require the Advanced Compression option) OLTP Table Compression SecureFiles Compression and Deduplication Ez alapján RMAN esetében például a default compression (BZIP2) szint ingyen használható, viszont az új ZLIB Advanced Compression opciót igényel. A ZLIB hatékonyabban használja a CPU-t, azaz jóval gyorsabb, viszont kisebb tömörítési arány érheto el vele.
