• How can I receive more traffic? My VPS fails!!!

  I have a web site - photo gallery. About 400 photos. Site on Gallery 3. mySQL. Hosted on VPS from myhosting.com (CPU 1792 MHz, 2048 MB RAM). Everything seems to be ok, but there is one big problem. Once traffic reaches ~ 20 people (online) - website start loading really really slow. Actually website can't be loaded about 30-60 sec. What should I do? Buy more RAM / CPU on the same VPS? Move to a dedicated server or maybe myhosting.com just sucks? What do you recommend?

So I just wanted to know: The Windows Azure Pricing Page shows Linux Virtual Machine Price as $0.013/hr for an extra small VM. The monthly price comes up to about $10. Is this price charged as number of hours of computation done on the VM or number of hours of running the VM? And if I shutdown the VM, will I be charged anything?

• Using Virtual Domains with WordPress and Cherokee Web Server

  I'm trying to configure WordPress to work with Cherokee Web Server. The multi-site set up in WordPress is yyy.com and uses 'sub-domains'. Thus, I have sites like aaa.yyy.com, bbb.yyy.com - they all work fine so far. However, I have another completely different domain: abcde.com. Within WordPress, the sub-domain set up is abcde.yyy.com. When a public user accesses abcde.com, it cannot properly be redirected to the WordPress sub-domain abcde.yyy.com. How do I set up Cherokee to properly redirect virtual domains to WordPress? That means, the domain facing public would be abcde.com but WordPress would want to see abcde.yyy.com to properly return the correct content for the specific site. (I tried and it always get redirected to something like this: "http://yyy.com/wp-signup.php?new=abcde.com")

• Can't ping self

  I have a wireless internet connection setup on my Mac. (v10.5.6) Am connected to the internet and everything is running smoothly. I recently discovered a quirky behaviour while setting up apache web server. When i typed in my dynamic ip (http://117.254.149.11/) in the webbrowser to visit my site pages it just timed out. In terminal i tried pinging localhost and it worked. $ ping localhost PING localhost (127.0.0.1): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.063 ms 64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.056 ms 64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.044 ms But if i pinged my ip it would just time out. $ ping 117.254.149.11 PING 117.254.149.11 (117.254.149.11): 56 data bytes ^C --- 117.254.149.11 ping statistics --- 10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss Pinging any other site works though. I am completely stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Nginx no static files after update

  First, i must say that i am not expert in server administration, my site was setup by hosting admins (that i cannot contact anymore). Few days ago, i updated Nginx to latest version (admin told me that it is safe to do). But after that, my site serves only html content, no CSS, images, JS. If i try to open some image i get message "Wellcome to Nginx" (same thin if i try to open static.mysitedomain.com). More details: Site has static. subdomain, but static files are in same directory as they used to be before setting up static files. I was googling for some solutions, i tried to change something in /etc/nginx/, but no luck. I feel that this is some minor configuration problem, any ideas? • What exactly do I have to pay attention for when choosing Windows Hosting Provider?

  This is my first time choosing a hosting company. It is for a web site made in asp.net mvc3. So I was thinking choosing a provider would be easy since I found this page http://www.microsoft.com/web/Hosting/Home which contains hosting offers. Now hours later, I am still searching. The reason is that as soon as I start investigating about particular company, something stands out that I do not like. Here are some examples what I noticed when checking various companies in more detail: Company "about us" page is lacking in information about their company. Few of them had just general description what they do and nothing else, while some others had information like company name but had no address. Checking company name in Business Registry Searches gave no results. Two of the companies I checked had both company name and address but I was unable to find them in the registry. Putting company domain into Google gave mostly results from that domain or web hosting review sites but not much else. I am assuming that good companies should have search results from other sites too. Low Alexa Traffic Rank. There was one company which had a site that looked very professional but their alexa traffic ranking was like 2 million. Are there any other factors I should pay attention to when choosing a hosting company? Do I have legitimate concerns or am I just too paranoid?

• Slow Web Performance on two Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Servers

  We have two Windows 2008 R2 servers that we use for agents to log into to access our customers systems. Saturday morning we received complaints that on both servers the web is running horribly slow. This happens on all websites and the majority of the time the web site times out trying to load. Other users located at the same site but using their desktop machine do not see any issue. We have rebooted the boxes and checked settings and cannot find the cause. The CPU/Memory/Network/Disk Space use on the server is very low. I thought it might have been a MS update causing the issue but it appears the last update was applied in January. We have rebooted both boxes and I am in process of trying a different browser. Any ideas what could be causing this?

• Windows 2008 IIS 7.0 HTTP to HTTPS Redirect -- Versus IIS 6.0 Mechanism

  This topic, creating a mechanism for redirection from HTTP to HTTPS on a Windows 2008 server running IIS 7.0 is a much written-about topic on the Internet. How this is done is really not so much my issue. My issue is more of explaining why this can't be done with the standard HTTP Redirect module that ships with Windows 2008 IIS 7.0. Instead, there are other methods needed that are more arduous. First, the IIS 6.0 method requires no externally available modules nor does it require any additional modifications to the web.config or any type of other development effort. It's outlined here: http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/dorr/archive/2009/01/13/how-to-force-redirection-from-http-to-https-on-iis-6-0.aspx And, you can see the basic steps are to run the snap-in, get the properties on the site, and do some modifications. Presto, you have the HTTP -- HTTP redirect setup. Now, on the IIS 7.0 platform, it doesn't seem this simple. An initial search found the following site: http://www.sslshopper.com/iis7-redirect-http-to-https.html Which has two separate approcates: 1. Involves installing a separately available Microsoft module -- URL Rewrite Module, and then adding XML to the web.config. 2. Custom Error Page. ...there might be other methods, but these are the basic ones and the first is listed as the primary method. But wait...There exists on the IIS 7.0 an HTTP Redirect Module. So...why can't I use the HTTP Redirect Module to do this very thing? This is really my big question. I need to know this because my management is going to insist I use the HTTP Redirect Module and set up the HTTP to HTTPS redirect in a similar fashion to how we do in IIS 6.0. Can someone please explain to me, in clean, simple, easy to understand, terms that both I and my management can understand as to why I need to go get the URL Rewrite Module and install that on the server and make the web.config changes suggested by the article instead of simply using the HTTP Redirect module that's already installed on the site?   I have a client who lectures, and wants to sell spots to his lecture online. I would preferably like to set him up with a solution that allows me to collect billing information on his site. My experience with e-commerce is in using solutions like Authorize.net, however this does not seem cost effective since I can't imagine he's making a huge profit off of this. I'm afraid he would lose money in the cost of using Authorize.net (or any payment gateway for the matter). I could use google checkout or paypal express, but this would require me to leave his site (although with google checkout, it looks like, from a glance, that I could just submit to their form from my server, and likely with paypal as well, but I don't know if this is against their TOS). What is the most cost-effective solution for accepting credit card payments in this situation?

• File not updating in symlink'd folder in IIS

  I have the following setup: Site1/Shared/ - Physical folder Site2/Shared/ - symlink using mklink to Site1/Shared I've updated a javascript file in Site1/Shared/scripts, and the change is being reflected on Site1. However, the change is not being reflected through IIS on Site2. When I open Site1/Shared/scripts/common.js and Site2/Shared/scripts/common.js, they match exactly. But when I view the files through Safari, Firefox, Chrome, IE, from any machine (even machines that have never visited the sites), the change is not reflected on Site2. Here are URLs to the files to review: Site 1: http://www.landsofamerica.com/shared/scripts/common.js Site 2: http://www.landsoftexas.com/shared/scripts/common.js These files look exactly the same when logged onto the server, and the shared folder under landsoftexas.com is a symlink created using mklink to the shared folder under landsofamerica.com. Any idea what might be causing IIS to serve the wrong file?

  I have a tricky variation on an old problem. I have an apache based site that should generally be accessed via http/port 80. However for certain areas protected areas that require authentication (designated by .htaccess), I want to be able to redirect the user the https/port 443. The key here is that I want this to always happen - i.e. I don't want to have to rewrite each htaccess file with a redirect. I only want to enforce this for basic authentication and the protected areas are scattered all over the site. Is it possible to somehow redirect all basic authentication requests to the SSL host?

  I am currently setting up a windows 2008 server to host a website with multiple subdomains, all accessible only within the lan. also, there is no active directory. what I did is : 1 - computer name : 'web' 2 - in IIS, I added a site binding as 'site1.web' to the default web site 3 - added DNS role to the server 4 - added 'web' as principal zone in direct lookup zones (default options) 5 - added CNAME 'site1' From a client machine, in tcpip config I added the ip address of 'web' to the DNS list in addition to the ISP DNS. (client machine ip is from DHCP) Now browsing to 'http://web' or 'http://site1.web' works correctly. My question is, is it possible throught additional steps in the server to have the websites accessible without requiring the DNS config in all the client machines ? thanks in advance

• Web Hosting Checklist

  Hello, I am a web developer that is starting to look into hosting his own website. I would like to showcase my programming skills (PHP, MySQl, C#, Wordpress). My knowledge of languages I am OK with but the actually hosting site is where my knowledge starts to get a little shaky. I know the basics (bandwidth, sub-domains, re-write rules) but I would love your input, to help me formulate a check list of certain web-hosting services that I should be on the look-out for. Also I was wondering if there were any reliable hosting providers who give you the option to host both c# code-behinds and PHP code. As I would like to have two versions of my site, one in C# and one in PHP the hope is that if I need to look for another job this website will help me show possible employers my server side knowledge. I hope this is enough info, I did some researching online but found a bunch of unless articles and I've always have had luck on the StackExchange sites. So hopefully you, can help me. Thanks alot.

• Is there a free ftp client that has macros

  At the moment I'm using filezilla to deploy new versions of a site to the live server. the trouble is that there are one or two config, bootstrap etc. files which are different for the live site and I have to be careful not to overwrite. Also there are big areas of code that never change (eg I use the zend framework, which is always the same). I'd like to be able to record a macro to upload the same bunch of files and folders every time, excluding subdirectories and files which shouldn't be overwritten. Does any ftp client offer this?

  I'm always on the lookout for cool toys that can empower my kids (9, 6 and 2yo) to be creative and break the mold of being just consumers of other's ideas. I recently came across littleBits while watching a TED video of their creator. I was immediately hooked. It seemed like the perfect blend of simplicity and self-learning that I was looking to get my kids into electronics. So I went ahead and purchased the kit from SparkFun and a bunch of standalone parts (&quot;bits&quot;) from the site itself. There are also a bunch of videos and pictures on their site to get a better idea of what they are, as well as multitude YouTube videos. This weekend I gave them to my kids, and coincidentally, we also travelled to my hometown and they got to share them too with their cousins. Man, what a blast it was! • FTP "PUT" fails from Virtual Machine, but not host PC: 504 Command not implemented for that paramete

  I have an FTP Script I'm using to automate a file transfer. The transfer works fine on my PC (XP SP2), but when I try and run it on a VM on my PC (XP SP2), the "put" commands gives off: 504 Command not implemented for that parameter. FTP File: open [ftp site] [username] [password] cd [directory on FTP server] binary hash put ..\[subfolder1]\[Subfolder2]\[subfolder3]\[filename] bye The FTP site/server is around the world, and not under my control. From what I understand of a 504, that means the command should NEVER work, but since the same script DOES work on my PC (hosting the VM), that eliminates syntax, file naming, etc. The put command when triggered from the VM, actually creates a 0 length file on the target FTP server, but doesn't populate the file.

• What would be better in my case - apache, nginx or lighttpd ?

  Hey everybody, I'm writing a php site that's expected to get about 200-300 concurrent users browsing it. When initializing the application will load about 30 php classes, some 10 maybe 15 images and a couple of css files. So my question is what else can I do (except optimizing my code and using apc/eaccelerator for php) to get as close as possible to those numbers of concurrent users ? Currently we haven't chosen a server for the site to be hosted on but most probably it'll be a VPS Dual core + 2 or maybe 4gb ram. Is it possible for such a server to handle that load ? Also how could I test it myself and be sure that it'll be able to handle it ? Thanks in advance, Me

• Virtualhost setup, same IP address, different DirectoryIndex's

  I am trying to set up 2 virtual host entries in apache but I'm not sure how to accomplish what I want to do. I have two domain names, both pointing to the same IP Address. I need the DirectoryIndex to be different, which is pretty much the only difference in the entries. I have the following set up: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName firstdomain.com ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot "/srv/www" DirectoryIndex /portals/site/index.html </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName seconddomain.com ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot "/srv/www" DirectoryIndex /portals/site/index_fr.html </VirtualHost> Not sure what I need to do differently but the second entry doesn't work. The only real difference is I need the second domain to point to a different DirectoryIndex. If there is a better way to accomplish this, your help would be appreciated.

• Event notifications for Reporting Systems

  The last couple of months I have been working on an application that allows people to browse a data mart. Nice, but nothing new. In this context I have an idea that I want to publish before anyone else patents it: event notifications. You see, reporting systems are not used as much as we’d like. Typically, users don’t know where to look for reports that might interest them. At best, there are some standard reports that people generate every so often, i.e. based on a time trigger. Or some reporting systems can be configured to send monthly reports around, for convenience. But apart from that, the reporting system is just sitting there, waiting for the rare curious user who makes the effort to dig a bit for treasures to be found. Wouldn’t it be great if there were data triggers? Imagine we could configure the reporting system to let us know when something interesting has happened. It would send us a message containing a link that would take us to the relevant section of the reporting system, showing a report with all the data pertaining to that event, preparing us for proper actions. Here in the North West this would really be great. You see, it rains here most of the time from October to June, so why even check the weather forecast? But sometimes, sometimes it snows. And sometimes the sun shines. So rather than me going to the weather site and seeing over and over again that it will be raining, making me think “why bother?” I’d like to configure the weather site so that it lets me know when the rain stops. Now, hopefully nobody has patented this idea already. Let me know.

• Ditch cPanel / WHM in favour of manual seup

  We currently use cPanel / WHM on a reseller account but are looking at getting a dedicated server. My first thought was to duplicate this set up on the dedicated box to allow us to quickly create new accounts. I'll be a managed server so they'll have set up the LAMP stack. I'm curious if I actually need cPanel and WHM. We don't use many of the features from cPanel / WHM, just creating accounts and databases, clients do not have FTP access. I'm no sys admin and come from a Windows / GUI background but have some knowledge in setting up development servers. WHM: Creating accounts I presume this sets up the Apache virtual host, FTP access and DNS settings. I've some knowledge of editing the Apache files to create virtual hosts. Am I correct in thinking as long as the DNS is pointing to the server IP and the virtual host is configured the server can serve the (php) pages? I'm not sure I need per site FTP access as only we will have access so I could have a server wide/htdocs only access to view all the site. The company who supply the dedicated hosts would also provide the own DNS management tool so I'm not need to cPanel one. MySQL: Creating users and databases We use cPanel to create the MySQL users and databases. As it's a dedicated box and I can have root access I think this could be replaced by SQLyog for db management and phpMyAdmin for user management. Do you I need cPanel or can I get by editing a few text files for creating the accounts, then use the MySQL tools for databases? Or am I missing something major with how the sites are configured?

• multiple domains, one static IP address and latency

  how is latency affected when multiple domains are using one single static IP address ? The scenario is in shared web-hosting By latency meaning the DNS lookup the client has to do. As far as I understand it, the browser would hit the root servers to try to figure out the IP Address and it belongs where and then when it comes to the correct server, it probably looks up some sort of table to determine which site names much and show that site as such via browser to the user. Is my understanding correct or backwards or what ?
