• Nvidia restricted driver = invisible menus when using VNC

  I'm installing 9.04 on an HTPC, so I will often VNC in to work on it from my laptop. After the initial install, I updated everything, and it all went fine. I was able to VNC using Ubuntu's built-in "Remote Desktop" with no problems. I then installed the 180.xx restricted nvidia drivers and rebooted. Everything worked fine on my TV, but when I VNC'd into it, all I could see was the background and title bar. When I'd pull down a menu, the menu was visible on the TV but not over the VNC link. I assume that means the GUI was now using some sort of overlay for the menus, which is fine, but what's the best way to make them visible over VNC? Clarification: I know I can turn off all visual effects and solve the problem, but I'm looking for a way to see the menus over VNC while keeping the GUI pretty...

• Citrix and WPF, blue window

  We are building WPF applications which will be deployed on Citrix. Currently you simply see a blue window under Citrix, although the app runs fine on the server itself. There do seem to be some issues detailed on the net. Citrix forum discussion Microsoft hot fix We've applied the hot fix but this does not appear to fix the problem for us at least. Also, found this identical question on this site, but it had been removed by the author, so no answers. I'm running citrix 4.5 on a Windows 2003 server. I am trying to publish a WPF app (any WPF app has this problem) and all I get is a blue rectangle where the app is supposed to be. The rectangle is the exact size and shape of the window I expect, but it is just blue (looks like the color of the citrix desktop background). Any ideas?

• LInux (Ubuntu Karmic) equivalent to Pawsense

  I now work from a home office - much to the delight of my cats. One in particular likes to come for a hug several times a day. That in itself is fine but he tends to sit on my laptop keyboard whilst I'm working on my desktop and vice-versa. Also he'll walk across any keyboard I'm actually using at the time. I've found Pawsense and would like to know if anyone can suggest a Linux equivalent (or some incantations to achieve the same). Training him out of sitting on the keyboard is likely to prove fruitless (a suggested here). He's far more pig-headed than I am. This conversation discusses some utilities like xlock et al but I'd prefer if possible to have something more along the lines of Pawsense that doesn't lock the keyboard but "simply" intercepts cat-like typing. • Belkin Wireless G router not working on Windows 7

  I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 Wireless G router which used to work on XP. I have a clean Windows 7 install (on the same desktop PC), and it just won't work. Device Manager lists the adapter as a USB device, but it says "The drivers for this device are not installed", even though the driver installer said the installation was OK. Manage Wiresless Networks says "wireless is not currently enabled". The WLAN AutoConfig service is running. My specific question is which of the two symptoms above should I go for first? Should I try to fix the driver installation somehow, or should I try to enable wireless? Is one caused by the other, or is this two independent problems? Any other thoughs that could help me are also appreciated.

• what can I do with an old but working PC [closed]

  I have an old Dell optiplex GX240 on Pentium 4 1.8Ghz and 256MB Ram (or was it 512MB). It's still in working condition but it's getting slow for me and i wanted to optimize it. I just want that old box to be usable even for simple desktop use (email, surfing, chat). I also have to note that my parents prefer use it over a laptop for some reason. Treat it as a "box-type netbook". unlike the other threads that they all prefer sending away or use as file server, firewall and that, i am looking for suggestions on how to keep it usable as the main PC. any suggestions? OS perhaps?

• "Fuzzy" Display Problems on New OpenSUSE 11.3 Install

  Hi, I have a old Desktop that has a new installation of OpenSUSE 11.3 on it. To get straight to the point, whenever I try to start-up OpenSUSE, my display goes "fuzzy" (almost like a badly tuned TV) and sometimes (not always) my monitor goes black and says "Out of Range: 15.6kHz/49Hz": I assumed that this was a driver problem, so I download the drivers from nvidia and ran the shell script, completed and rebooted. Then OpenSUSE failed to boot with something like "nscd failed to start". At that point I decided to re-install and I did, but this time I tried un-checking "Automatic Configuration" to see if that helped. Got through the install and still have a problem. Unfortunately, my Linux troubleshooting skills are non-existent, so has anyone got any ideas on what could be the problem (is it the display driver?) and how I can fix the problem?

I am also using a bad (outdated) version of RDP that has security vulnerabilities, so stunnel is a must. I will preshare the necessary .pem's between machines. What are the openssl commands I need to create the right .pem files on both the client and on the server? What files need to be shared?

• Issue Connecting two home networks

  Hi, I have a home networking question. I have two DLINK wireless/wired routers in my house, connected to the Internet ISP. There are a 2 computers on each of the two networks. Network1: has 192.168.0.0 (gateway) Valid IP'S range - 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10, with COMP1 having a fixed IP of 162.168.0.1 Network2: has 192.168.0.100 (gateway) Valid IP'S range - 192.168.0.101 - 192.168.0.110 with COMP2 having a static IP of 162.168.0.101, a WIRELESS printer on 192.168.0.102 Both routers have a netmask of 255.255.255.0 My need is to connect the two routers, so that I can Remote desktop for COMP1 to COMP2 and viceversa, and COMP1 to connect to the wireless printer on Network2. can anyone help to set this up so that the both networks can talk to each other. • Sometimes tabs in notepad++ won't make a new window when dragged out

  Long-time Linux user on a Windows 7 machine, using Notepad++ to edit multiple text files. Sometimes I can drag a tab out of the notepad++ window onto the desktop to get a new notepad++ window. This is a very nice feature. But sometimes when I try to drag a tab out, nothing happens. I don't see what is different about these tabs or the files they contain. It is repeatable; the same tab still won't make a new window. I'm not familiar enough with Windows and its strange ways to begin to guess what is going on, unless it's a bug. How can I make all tabs draggable-to-new-windowable, no exceptions?

• Why would http & https be blocked, even in safe mode with firewall disabled?

  I have a windows 7 machine (dell studio xps). Everything on it seems to be in working order. The network device says it has internet connectivity, and indeed I can ping websites, transfer files via ftp, connect to vpns and remote desktop, but the web won't work. I've disabled the windows firewall and still no go. There are no other firewalls installed. The computer came with a trial of norton 360 so I also used the norton removal tool (which solved a similar problem on another computer for me previously). Any thoughts?

• ATI Radeon Drivers works with which linux distribution and version?

  I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. Almost every new linux distribution seems to have an issue with it, when i install the drivers. Working without utilizing the graphics card leaves me so unproductive. So i made a plan to use older versions of linux, any distribution suitable as a desktop distribution. UPDATE: The kind of problems that i am facing are, 1) After installing drivers the system boots and hangs, 2) There are unusual lines over the screen 3) After upgrade system doesn't start properly(hangs the usual old way) The kind of answers i am looking for is, distribution X(the newer the version the better) doesn't have the above problem after installing drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. UPDATE: The new drivers released by AMD seems to fix all the issues, although they are still beta Thanks

  I'm new here and also with networking but i can't set internet conection for some vlan created. I have a Cisco CE500 switch and created 4 vlans define by the roles in the switch. Vlan 2: Servers (role) (port 3-4) Vlan 3: Desktop (role) (port 5-8) Vlan 4: Guest (role) (port 9-12) Vlan 1 is default, Connect to the ADSL Modem/Router Port 2 assign to the Router Role (vlan 1) The switch is connected on port2 the ADSL Modem (DHCP) 192.168.2.254 The goal is: All Vlan should have internet connection. • How to put 1000 lightweight server applications in the cloud

  The company I work for sells a commercial desktop/server app that runs on any non dedicated Windows PC or server and uses Tomcat for all interactions with the application. Customers are asking that we host their instance of the application so they don't have to run it locally on their own servers. The app is lightweight and an average server, in theory, could handle 25-50 instances before users would notice a slowdown. However only 1 instance can run per Windows instance (because the application writes to a common registry branch) so we'd need something like VMWare to create 25-50 Windows instances. We know we eventually need to reprogram to make it truly cloud-worthy but what would you recommend for a server farm or whatever for this? We don't have the setup to purchase our own servers so we must use a 3rd party. We have budgeted $500 - $1000 per year per customer for this service. • Ubuntu 12.04 blank screen after login

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit on a machine, everything went well accordingly but after login it just gives me a blank screen. During startup after BIOS message it shows "Out of range" error and comes to login window after logon it's just a blank screen. even after somehow it comes to an empty desktop screen i dont see the Unity bar or anything like that (Can change wallpaper, and system setting though). And can't goto Console mode by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 - it returns "Out of range" error. System is new AMD Sempron with 2 Gigs of RAM has NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE-based graphic chipset. any ideas on this?

• Chrome mouse lag

  I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate (without reinstalling, an actual upgrade) and now I'm experiencing some really annoying mouse lag in Chrome. It seems to happen most often when there is a Flash element on the page, though that's not always the case. I have a Windows Experience base of 7.5 (I just re-ran it), 7.7 in desktop and gaming graphics, and Skyrim still runs fine. I ran an Intel chipset update and re-installed my Catalyst drivers (I uninstalled them first), and I don't have any available Windows Update. I've also re-installed both Chrome and Flash, and I've disabled all of my Chrome extensions. Nothing has helped. What might be causing this very annoying issue, and what might I do to fix it, short of reformatting? Thank you.

• How to dual OS 32-bit/64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate.

  I have a problem with regards to my nVidia driver not running on 64-bit. I decided to install both 32-bit and 64-bit on my ASUS K42JC (4GB RAM upgrade) in order to function the nVidia on the 32-bit. My question is, how could I make my laptop run on either 32-bit or 64-bit OS. What options I am suppose to use, a single, double, or triple partition? From an answer: Well. When I installed the nVidia driver from either the ASUS site and the prescribed driver from NVIDA site via System Requirements Lab, both ended up freezing my laptop to the point when the desktop is about the finish booting. I have tried three(3) times reformatting and trying to fix the problem. Yet no use. I filed a ticket to the Asus support but for now no replies yet. But this bothers me, why wouldn't the nVidia run on 64bit yet it runs perfectly on 32bit.

• why is my Bamboo pen always drawing and a yellow note pad appears?

  I have had a Bamboo pen and touch tablet for a couple years but have not used it in a long time. Now that I'm trying to use it again it is behaving very strangely. It won't drag anything on my desktop, the minute I try there is this yellow pad that appears and the pen draws a line on it instead of dragging the file. The yellow pad and drawn line disappear the second I lift the pen from the tablet. The most frustrating is it does the same thing when I try to draw in Photoshop. It won't draw with the paintbrush on my canvas because the minute I try to this yellow pad appears and it draws a line on it instead of on the canvas, which disappears the second I lift the pen from the tablet. It also bizarrely automatically switches from the paintbrush to the automatic selection tool. Has anyone had this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix this? I operate with Mac OS X 10.5.8

• Different BSOD every time I turn on computer

  Please help. Every time I turn on computer I receive a different BSOD. I can't even give my computer info because I haven't been able to stay on it long enough. The following are the BSOD that I just received in the last hour. I have also reset computer to its original state. Now as soon as I turn on it goes to a BSOD almost immediately. I know you need more info about computer, so if you can tell me what info it is you need, I will get it. I can tell you that it is a desktop.

  All my life I used Microsoft Office on Windows for document writing and then Libre(Open)Office on Linux. This is not a bad software, but not perfect and I have some complaints. Now on my usual desktop I have Linux. I heard from people who work a lot with documents of different type and complexity (diagrams, articles, document design, presentation) that latex is a perfect thing. I have spent two days exploring Latex and my opinion as a beginner that it is out-of-date (the concepts of Latex language). The language is not intuitive and sometimes even complex. Can somebody advise another software product for document writing?

  I get daily critical errors from Kaspersky involving Explorer.exe... The file in question is almost always in the Recycle Bin, or something on the desktop. • Macbook Pro (SantaRosa) internal display not detected by graphics card, external monitor OK

  My MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz, Santa Rosa with infamous nVidia card) acts strange. It shows the normal gray screen with Apple logo and animation flawlessly during start up but the internal display goes black without any rendering at all when all is loaded. (shining a light on display show nothing) If an external monitor is connected through the DVI port it will remain black during start up and then show the desktop as the internal display goes black. This happens both while booting to Mountain Lion and Windows XP. I have checked "About my Mac" and only the external display is listed. The same is the case if I use the nVidia Control panel in Windows XP. My questions: Is this a hardware problem or is it related to software maybe even firmware? What controls the display during start up, graphics card or something else?

• How to disable shared folders passowrd prompt on window & Linux

  I'm using windows xp, vista, server 2008 R2, ubuntu-linux 9.10, 9.04, 8.10 desktop editions. I shared some folders/directories in windows and in ubuntu machines. Normally for the first time it's prompted for the password when tried to access the shared folders on either of the machine and again they prompt for the password when the system is rebooted. Recently I've created a batch and sh script which copies from the shared folders from windows to ubuntu and vice-versa. But the scripts cannot automate the password prompt and I'm wondering if I could disable the password prompt of the shared folders on windows and as well as on ubuntu machines so that my script runs smoothly. I don't know if it's possible or not but want to confirm posting here and if it is then nothing but saying need help...!. Thanks all!

• Why does VNC eat certain characters?

  I often use VNC to connect to my desktop upstairs using a laptop downstairs over my home network. I tunnel the VNC connection via SSH. The problem I keep running into is that I'll attempt to type a ! or a : or even a captial A and it will come across the wire as a 1, ;, or a respectively. Is this something I can fix? It's really REALLY annoying while one is programming to have to pop open character map and find a colon and copy/paste it in each time. Running Ubuntu 10.04 upstairs, Linux Mint 10 downstairs.
