• 'Why' and 'Where' Generics is actually used?

  Hi all I know that generics are used to achieve type safety and i frequently read that they are largely used in custom collections. But why actually do we need to have it generic? For example, Why cant i use string[] instead of List<string> Lets consider i declare generic class and it has a property X T x; If i provide a method for the class which does x = x + 1; what does it mean actually? I dono what T is actually going to be and i dono what x = x + 1 going to perform actually? If i'm not able to do my own manipulations in my methods how the generics are going to be help me anyway? I've already studied lot of bookish answers. It would be much appreciated if any one can provide some clear insights in this. Regards NLV

• How to create an object reference to a xaml page from App.xaml.cs codebehind?

  Hi all, I have a Silverlight 4 Business Project where I have enabled the ASP.NET Authentication/Authorization role information. I would like to pass the currently authenticated user's account information from the app.xaml.cs codebehind to a different XAML page, but I have no idea how that is done, or if it's even possible. My goal is to databind the IsEnabled property of various buttons of my target XAML page, based on whether the current user is in a particular admin related role or not. The Application_UserLoaded event handler of app.xaml.cs seems to be the safest event handler to initiate this task because it fires only after the user's account information is loaded from the server. I had previously attempted to retrieve the current user information directly from my target XAML page, but I was never getting the current user information because Application_UserLoaded hadn't finished loading the current user info yet. public partial class App : Application { private void Application_UserLoaded(LoadUserOperation operation) { // How do you create an object reference to a XAML page from your project solution // from this event handler? } } Thanks in advance for any assistance, John

• Flex LineChart with Multiple Data Providers

  Can I create a LineChart with multiple data providers? Since LineSeries has a dataprovider property, I'm assuming the answer is Yes. I would expect something like this to work: <LineChart>     <series>         <LineSeries dataprovider="{dp1}"/>         <LineSeries dataprovider="{dp2}"/>         <LineSeries dataprovider="{dp3}"/>     </series> </LineChart> But, the LineChart only appears to work for me when the dataprovider is assigned to the LineChart. • to-many Core Data fetch request behaves oddly with a new store

  I have two entities, Department and Person. Department has a to-many relationship to Person. The Person entity has a hireDate property. I'm using the predicate "count(person) = 0 OR none person.hireDate %@" to find Departments without any Persons in them or Departments that haven't hired anyone since a recent date. When the app first starts up (new user experience) and Departments are inserted and no Person have been inserted, the fetch request with this predicate returns nothing. However, if I create insert a new Person entity and delete it, then save the store, the fetch request will return all the Departments. I've found a work around where, I just insert a new Person and delete it, then save the store, the fetch request as I expected it to work. I've found that inserting a new Person and deleting it without saving will not correct the problem. Is this a bug with Core Data or is this a bug with how I've designed my app?

• How can you query for an object using one of its properties' id

  I have two entities, say, House and People, where multiple people can live in one house. It's a unidirectional link where each Person has a field for which House they belong to, so the Person table has a column named house_id. I need to be able to return all the Person objects who belong to a certain House, but I only have the id of the house. This can be done like this: House house = houseDAO.findById(houseId); List people = session.createCriteria(Person.class).add(Restrictions.eq("house", house)).list(); But since I don't need the house, that's adding an unnecessary query. I've tried to do: session.createCriteria(Person.class).add(Restrictions.eq("house_id", houseId)).list(); But that doesn't work because house_id is not a property, it's a database column. I could just add an sql restriction, but is there a hibernate way of doing this?

• C# - Hiding ListViewItem based on a filter

  I want to hide some items based on a text filter in a ListView. Basically the listview loads the items from a text file, and I don't want it to be read and/or written when the user searches the list. The search is done in a combobox's KeyDown event, but there is no "Visible" property of the ListViewItem. Is there any easy way to do this, WITHOUT re-reading the file? (as it is an XML file, and it could even contain thousands of items, it would be hard to search efficiently and even let the user use the application, as the search would take for minutes (mostly with the loading)).

• Naming suggestions for a function returning parent prototype

  I'm having a naming trouble with a function which returns parent prototype of specified object. It's being used like this: # Pseudo Code MyClass { super(MyClass,this).constructor.call(.... The problem is that I want to use a word which is as superior as "super", but "super" is reserved even it's undefined. Now I'm using "parent", but the window object has a property named parent. I hate Javascript. What should I name this function? Names have to start with lowercase and have to be short.

• Accessing HttpRequest from Global.asax via a page

  I'm trying to get a property (ImpersonatePersonId) from a page in global.asax but get a HttpException saying 'Request is not available in this context'. I've been searching for some documentation on where in the pipeline the request is accessible, but as far as I can see all Microsoft can produce of documentation is one-liners like "PostRequestHandlerExecute: Occurs when the ASP.NET event handler finishes execution." which really doesn't give me much... I've tried placing the call in both Pre and PostRequestHandlerExceute but with the same result. I wonder if anyone with experience in this would be so kind as to tell me where the Request object is available. My code from global asax is below.   My output window is flooded with binding expression failures like : "Cannot find source for binding with reference 'RelativeSource FindAncestor, AncestorType='System.Windows.Controls.UserControl', AncestorLevel='1''. • Loading different portrait/landscape UIViews

  Hi, I have following View COntroller structure: ScrollViewController LandscapeViewController PortraitViewController Each with its own .nib The app starts in landscape mode where many landscape views are added to a scrollview. Each landscape view has its specific portrait view, so I have to assign like ID's to each of this views. Can you tell me, how I can load the specific portrait view for each landscape view when rotating the device? Do I have to make two scroll views? One for landscape, one for portrait? Or is it possible to just scroll through the landscape scrollview an load just one portrait view with the right content based on an ID? How could I implement that? The data comes from a property list. Thanks in advance!

• Android: scaling a button with a background image.

  I'm probably just being daft but my Google searches are not working out well. I have a bunch of buttons i add in code that all have dynamic text. I've set a background image for each of these buttons since the default greybutton doesn't work well for my application. This works perfectly and when the text size (or content) changes, the button automatically grows to accommodate the expanded text. What doesn't work is that I'd like the button to scale proportionally - i.e. if the background image is round, i'd like it to stay round rather than oval as the button gets bigger. With an imagebutton, there is a property "Adjust view bounds" that does exactly this but I cant put text on an imagebutton. Is there something equivalent for a regular button? or am I going about this wrong? i also tried setting the width of the button in code, but I can't seem to determine the new height (button.getHeight() returns 0)

  I do not understand how the DefaultProperty Metadata tag work or what it signifies. I've read the MSDN and went through the sample but I find it confusing. DefaultPropertyAttribute Class I've read a few blogs and they seem to refer to the indexers. I'm not sure why you would want metadata for your properties? I am coming from a Java background, perhaps a Java analogy would help. • [WM6] Owner of a component. What exactly is this for?

  I am developing an app for Windows Mobile 6 and there is a CameraCaptureDialog class that enables me to call a camera app from my own application. The class has an Owner property that most examples on the internet set to "this". cam.Owner = this; What exactly does this do? I've seen a similar scenario with Windows Forms components/controls by setting the Parent control. In that case I guess it's used only for layout algorithms, but other than that, is there any useful purpose? I don't see how setting an owner of the CameraCaptureDialog can (and actually does not) make any difference (at least not a visible one). Any insight would be appreciated.

• Nhibernate ValueType Collection as delimited string in DB

  Hi I have a legacy db that I am mapping with Nhibernate. And in several locations a list och strigs or domain objects are mapped as a delimited string in the database. Either 'string|string|string' in the value type cases and like 'domainID|domainID|domainID' in the references type cases. I know I can create a dummy property on the class and map to that fields but I would like to do it in a more clean way, like when mapping Enums as their string representation with the EnumStringType class. • A series of simple Aggregate Root questions (Domain Driven Design)

  I have a few (hopefully) simple questions about aggregate roots in domain driven design: Is it okay to have an aggregate root as a property of another aggregate root? Is it okay to have a given entity inside two or more aggregate roots? My final question is a bit more involved. I have a website that has a few entities that really belong to a "website" aggregate root. They are 'News', 'Products', and 'Users'. There isn't a 'Website' table in the database, but a 'Website' seems like a good aggregate root for these three entities. How is this usually achieved? Thanks!

• Trapping events within list box item templates in WPF

  I've got listbox that employs an item template. Within each item in the list, as defined in the template there is a button. When the user clicks the button I change a value in the data source that defines the sort order of the list. Changing the datasource is not a problem as this is working just fine within my application template. However my next step is to reload the listbox with the new sorted data source. I've tried doing this from the tempalte but it apparently doesn't have access (or I can't figure out how to get access) to the parent elements so I can reset the .ItemSource property with a newly sorted data source. Seems like this is possible but the solution is eluding me :(

  Hi, I've been slowly working my way through the examples in Beginning iPhone Development and there are a few things that I have not been able to figure out, but I'm sure you guys can help me with it. In Eclipse there is a Source-Generate Getters/Setters, can you do something similar to synthesize properties in Xcode I also cannot seem to find a Refactor menu I'm also struggling to find the equivalent to Source-Override/Implement Methods --Edit-- I failed to describe my problem it seems. I do know that synthesizing properties will generate getters/setters for me, but I am looking for a way to generate the @property/@synthesize code, by selecting the variables. Short list to start with, but I will probably have more as my confusion grows in might. :)

  I am working on an ASP .net MVC application. I have a System.DateTime? property say creationDate, which gets its value assigned from controller code. In my javascript I have access to this value, and I wanted to display this value in mm/dd/yyyy format in my grid. But I am not sure on how to convert System.Datetime? of c# to a javscript date or datestring value? Any help would be appreciated.

  I want a read only column bound to a boolean that shows a check mark image when true and nothing when false. The problem is the false value; I just want to show whatever the background of the datagrid is, but I don't see how to clear the image source. What should the Value of the image source be to do this? • java.util.Date.toString() is printing out wrong format

  The following code prints out "vmtDataOrig.creationdate=2012-11-03" VmtData vmtDataOrig = VmtDataDao.getInstance().loadVmt(1); System.out.println("vmtDataOrig.creationdate=" + vmtDataOrig.getCreationDate().toString()); Here is the definition of the creationDate field in the VmtData class: private Date creationDate = null; Here is the hibernate mapping of the creationDate field to the database table column: <property name="creationDate" column="CREATIONDATE" type="date"/> The CREATIONDATE column in the MySQL database table is of type "date", and for the record retrieved it has the value "2012-11-03". The Javadoc for the java.util.Date.toString() method says it is supposed to print the Date object in the form "dow mon dd hh:mm:ss zzz yyyy". Anyone know why it is printing it out in the form "yyyy-MM-dd"?
