• How do Python and PHP compare for ecommerce?

• Native SQL - How to set the schema and database names

  Im using Native SQL from ABAP language. The query to get data is something like this SELECT COUNT(ROWID) FROM <SCHEMANAME>.<TABLENAME>;@<DATABASENAME> INTO :localvariable I want to somehow set the schemaname and database name as default so that i do not need to use them in the SELECTs later. Then i can only use the table name in the SELECT. thanks !!

• Encoding problem (Hebrew UTF8) in WordPress

  Hi all, I have a blog (of a friend) I am failing to fix: http://www.nivcalderon.com/ The language of the website is Hebrew, but the encoding scrambles the output, and I can't find how to fix it. I tried changing the DB colliation to be utf8_general_ci. I added this: define('DB_COLLATE', 'utf8_general_ci'); To the wp-config (and also this: define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8'); But removed it later, since it didn't seem to fix the problem) Any ideas of what else to do ?   Dear All, I need to parallelize a CPU intensive Java application on my multicore desktop but I am not so comfortable with threads programming. I looked at Scala but this would imply learning a new language which is really time consuming. I also looked at Ateji PX Java parallel extensions which seem very easy to use but did not have a chance yet to evaluate it. Would anyone recommend it? Other suggestions welcome.   C++ is my first language, and as such I'm used to whitespace being ignored. However, I've been toying around with Python, and I don't find it too hard to get used to the whitespace rules. It seems, however, that a lot of programmers on the Internet can't get past the whitespace rules. From what I've seen, peoples' C++ programs tend to be formatted very consistently with respect to whitespace (or else it's pretty hard to read), so why do some people have such a problem with whitespace-based languages like Python?

  I have a problem using a Resources.resx - Resources.de.resx - combination in a C#/WPF project. The whole solutions contains several projects and some projects contains resource files. When starting the main project I can switch the language successfully from english to german. But the GUI elements from the sub projects still show the english text.   I'm having trouble figuring out the syntax for a JScript .NET dictionary object. I have tried private var myDictionary: Dictionary<string><string>; but the compiler complains that it's missing a semicolon and that the Dictionary object is not declared. I know JScript does have a native dictionary-like object format, but I'm not sure if there are disadvantages to using it instead of the .NET-specific construct. I.e., what if someone wants to extend my script using another .NET language?

• Why do open source projects cling on 0.x versions for too long?

  I see many open source projects insist on staying in 0.xxx version for a very long time despite that the product has been proven useful and very stable. Trac is one example. They even risked switching from 0.9 to 0.10 which might confuse a lot of users about which is more recent. I wonder if this is a cultural paradigm, an honor code in open source community or simply a strict interpretation of release cycle management? Would a person who releases first version as "1.0 beta" be banished from open source world, or more realistically appeal less number of contributors? For some projects it even looks like they will never switch to 1.0 ever but only approximating only half way each time, like Zeno's paradox.

• Passing zero arguments as params -- where the behaviour is defined?

  C# spec. allows you to call a function void foo(params int[] x) with zero parameters. However, I didn't find in C# Lang. Spec. a word on further behaviour -- will foo get empty array or null reference? I checked also MSDN -- nothing. Where the behaviour is defined? • How do I display alternate languages in Interface Builder? (Xcode5)

  The iOS project is using Base Localization with localizable strings set up for the Storyboard in English and German. Everything is working properly when I change the language for the simulator, but some of the text is getting truncated in German. I would like to view the German text in Interface builder so that it's easier to fix the constraints on the text labels and fields. It seems like this should just be a view setting or something, but I can't seem to find anything obvious.

  I know the .NET framework and WPF pretty well, but I think the whole thing has gotten too blown up, especially for small apps as the whole .NET framework 3.5 weighs 197 MB by now. I am looking for a language/framework/library that provides functionality similar to that of WPF (animations, gradients, a.s.o.) and the .NET framework (of course not everything, but the basic features) and which is faster and more lightweight than the .NET framework and creates smaller and faster applications than the ones using .NET. Do you have any suggestions?

  I seem to be missing something about LINQ. To me, it looks like it's taking some of the elements of SQL that I like the least and moving them into the C# language and using them for other things. I mean, I could see the benefit of using SQL-like statements on things other than databases. But if I wanted to write SQL, well, why not just write SQL and keep it out of C#? What am I missing here?

• What is the cost in bytes for the overhead of a sql_variant column in SQL Server?

  I have a table, which contains many columns of float data type with 15 digit precision. Each column consumes 8 bytes of storage. Most of the time the data does not require this amount of precision and could be stored as a real data type. In many cases the value can be 0, in which case I could get away with storing a single byte. My goal here is to optimize space storage requirements, which is an issue I am facing working with a SQL Express 4GB database size limit. If byte, real and float data types are stored in a sql_variant column there is obviously some overhead involved in storing these values. What is the cost of this overhead? I would then need to evaluate whether I would actually end up in significant space savings (or not) switching to using sql_variant column data types. Thanks, Elan

• Is it possible to programmatically switch error log providers with ELMAH?

  Is it possible to switch from using the XML provider to SQL Server using ELMAH? I need to investigate this option because of the fallibility of our SQL Server where our ELMAH errors are stored. I want to be able to fail gracefully and continue logging to XML if the server fails. I can see that programmatic connection string switching is possible, and I see that ELMAH Issue 149 announces the programmatic configuration of default error log, but I can't actually see any code examples anywhere, so I'm not too sure if this is possible. I'm guessing it is, in which case does anyone know for sure? My question is similar to this one, except that I want to try and log errors to SQL Server, and if that fails switch to XML, not log to all stores all the time.

• Is there an encoding method that is mutual to flash and php?

  I'm base64 encoding a JPG in AS3 and passing it to PHP where it would be decoded. It appears that AS3's encodeToBase64String() function and and PHP's base64_decode() function do not use the same algorithm. Is there a library or API for either language that would allow it to interface with the other? Alternatively, does anyone even know what PHP's default base64 map is? My Google searching is not yielding results.

• ^+Left Arrow and ^+Right Arrow suddenly stopped working on OS X

  Hello. I'm not really sure what to make of this. The key combination of ^← and ^→ have stopped working for one of the two users on my OS X installation. I use these keys all the time (switching tabs in terminal, IntelliJ primarily), and it's driving me crazy. On one user account, it works fine. On the other, it doesn't. This happened today and nothing significant comes to mind that would have caused some weird keybinding issue. If anyone has heard of or experienced anything like this, I would very much appreciate your advice! Thanks.
