• Dissertation about website and database security - in need of some pointers

  Hi, I am on my dissertation in my final year at university at the moment. One of the areas I need to research is security - for both websites and for databases. I currently have sections on the following: Website Form security - such as data validation. This section is more about preventing errors made by legitimate users as much as possible rather than stopping hackers, for example comparing a field to a regular expression and giving them meaningful feedback on any errors which did occur so as to stop it happening again. Constraints. For example if a value must be true or false then use a checkbox. If it is likely to be one of several values then use a dropdown or a set of radio boxes, and so on. If the value is unpredictable then use regular expressions to limit what characters they are allowed to enter, and to restrict the length of the string, and sometimes to limit the format (such as for dates / times, post codes and so on). Sometimes you can limit permissions to the form. This is on the occasion that you know exactly who (whether it be peoples names or a group of people - such as administrators or employees) is going to need access to the form. Restricting permissions will stop members of the public from being able to access the form. Symbols or strings which could be used maliciously or cause the website to act incorrectly (such as the script tag) should be filtered out or html encoded. Captcha images can be used to prevent automated systems from filling in and submitting the form. There are some hacks for file uploads - such as using double extensions - which can allow hackers to upload malicious files. Databases (this is nowhere near done yet but the sections I have planned are listed below) SQL statements vs stored procedures Throwing an error when one of the variables contains particular characters or groups of characters (I cant remember what characters they are, but I have seen a message thrown back at me before where I have tried to enter html or something into a text area). SQL Injection - and ways around it, with some examples. Does anyone have any hints and tips on where I could go for some decent, reliable information either about these areas or about other areas of security that I could cover? Thanks in advance. • ASP.NET GridView second header row to span main header row

  I have an ASP.NET GridView which has columns that look like this: | Foo | Bar | Total1 | Total2 | Total3 | Is it possible to create a header on two rows that looks like this? | | Totals | | Foo | Bar | 1 | 2 | 3 | The data in each row will remain unchanged as this is just to pretty up the header and decrease the horizontal space that the grid takes up. The entire GridView is sortable in case that matters. I don't intend for the added "Totals" spanning column to have any sort functionality. Don't forget the closing tag. Another edit: You can also do this without creating a custom class. • Why is ListBoxFor not selecting items, but ListBox is?

  I have the following code in my view: <%= Html.ListBoxFor(c => c.Project.Categories, new MultiSelectList(Model.Categories, "Id", "Name", new List<int> { 1, 2 }))%> <%= Html.ListBox("MultiSelectList", new MultiSelectList(Model.Categories, "Id", "Name", new List<int> { 1, 2 }))%> The only difference is that the first helper is strongly typed (ListBoxFor), and it fails to show the selected items (1,2), even though the items appear in the list, etc. The simpler ListBox is working as expected. I'm obviously missing something here. I can use the second approach, but this is really bugging me and I'd like to figure it out. For reference, my model is: public class ProjectEditModel { public Project Project { get; set; } public IEnumerable<Project> Projects { get; set; } public IEnumerable<Client> Clients { get; set; } public IEnumerable<Category> Categories { get; set; } public IEnumerable<Tag> Tags { get; set; } public ProjectSlide SelectedSlide { get; set; } } Update I just changed the ListBox name to Project.Categories (matching my model) and it now FAILS to select the item. <%= Html.ListBox("Project.Categories", new MultiSelectList(Model.Categories, "Id", "Name", new List<int> { 1, 2 }))%> I'm obviously not understanding the magic that is happening here. Update 2 Ok, this is purely naming, for example, this works... <%= Html.ListBox("Project_Tags", new MultiSelectList(Model.Tags, "Id", "Name", Model.Project.Tags.Select(t => t.Id)))%> ...because the field name is Project_Tags, not Project.Tags, in fact, anything other than Tags or Project.Tags will work. I don't get why this would cause a problem (other than that it matches the entity name), and I'm not good enough at this to be able to dig in and find out.

• Interesting issue with WCF wsHttpBinding through a Firewall

  I have a web application deployed in an internet hosting provider. This web application consumes a WCF Service deployed at an IIS server located at my company’s application server, in order to have data access to the company’s database, the network guys allowed me to expose this WCF service through a firewall for security reasons. A diagram would look like this. [Hosted page] --- (Internet) --- |Firewall <Public IP>:<Port-X >| --- [IIS with WCF Service <Comp. Network Ip>:<Port-Y>] link text I also wanted to use wsHttpBinding to take advantage of its security features, and encrypt sensible information. After trying it out I get the following error: Exception Details: System.ServiceModel.EndpointNotFoundException: The message with To 'http://<IP>:<Port>/service/WCFService.svc' cannot be processed at the receiver, due to an AddressFilter mismatch at the EndpointDispatcher. Check that the sender and receiver's EndpointAddresses agree. Doing some research I found out that wsHttpBinding uses WS-Addressing standards, and reading about this standard I learned that the SOAP header is enhanced to include tags like ‘MessageID’, ‘ReplyTo’, ‘Action’ and ‘To’. So I’m guessing that, because the client application endpoint specifies the Firewall IP address and Port, and the service replies with its internal network address which is different from the Firewall’s IP, then WS-Addressing fires the above message. Which I think it’s a very good security measure, but it’s not quite useful in my scenario. Quoting the WS-Addressing standard submission (http://www.w3.org/Submission/ws-addressing/) "Due to the range of network technologies currently in wide-spread use (e.g., NAT, DHCP, firewalls), many deployments cannot assign a meaningful global URI to a given endpoint. To allow these ‘anonymous’ endpoints to initiate message exchange patterns and receive replies, WS-Addressing defines the following well-known URI for use by endpoints that cannot have a stable, resolvable URI. http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2004/08/addressing/role/anonymous" HOW can I configure my wsHttpBinding Endpoint to address my Firewall’s IP and to ignore or bypass the address specified in the ‘To’ WS-Addressing tag in the SOAP message header? Or do I have to change something in my service endpoint configuration? Help and guidance will be much appreciated. Marko. P.S.: While I find any solution to this, I’m using basicHttpBinding with absolutely no problem of course.

• Android sending lots of SMS messages

  I have a app, which sends a lot of SMS messages to a central server. Each user will probably send ~300 txts/day. SMS messages are being used as a networking layer, because SMS is almost everywhere and mobile internet is not. The app is intended for use in a lot of 3rd world countries where mobile internet is not ubiquitous. When I hit a limit of 100 messages, I get a prompt for each message sent. The prompt says "A large number of SMS messages are being sent". This is not ok for the user to get prompted each time to ask if the app can send a text message. The user doesn't want to get 30 consecutive prompts. I found this android source file with google. It could be out of date, I can't tell.   Hi, I have inherited some code in which I now have to add CSRF prevention and am trying to use the struts2 tokenSession interceptor to do this. The code works as expected without this interceptor. (struts2 xml file not posted - will post the relevant section if required). I have also used the tokenSession interceptor in other pages which use a basic html submit button (i.e. not going via javascript or jquery) and this also works as expected. What is making the token invalid? N.B. The project I have inherited uses a strange mixture of standard html, struts2 tags, ExtJS and JQuery. I will clean this up at some point but at the moment I just need to get the tokenSession interceptor working asap in the code as-is (as I have to apply a similar fix to several hundred pages...).   Hello, The code below is a login system that I am using. It is supposed to allow a new user to register and then send the new user an activation email. It is inserting the new user into the MySQL database, but it is not sending the activation email. Any ideas why it's not sending the activation email? • heroku mongohq and mongoid Mongo::ConnectionFailure

  I have added the mongoHQ addon for mongodb at heroku. It crashes with something like this. connect_to_master': failed to connect to any given host:port (Mongo::ConnectionFailure) The descriptions online (heroku mongohq) are more directed towards mongomapper, as I see it. I'm running ruby 1.9.1 and rails 3-beta with mongoid. • WebKit "Refused to set unsafe header "content-length"

  I am trying to implement simple xhr abstraction, and am getting this warning when trying to set the headers for a POST. I think it might have something to do with setting the headers in a separate js file, because when i set them in the <script> tag in the .html file, it worked fine. The POST request is working fine, but I get this warning, and am curious why. I get this warning for both content-length and connection headers, but only in WebKit browsers (Chrome 5 beta and Safari 4). In Firefox, I don't get any warnings, the Content-Length header is set to the correct value, but the Connection is set to keep-alive instead of close, which makes me think that it is also ignoring my setRequestHeader calls and generating it's own. I have not tried this code in IE. • Specifying Android project dependencies (in Eclipse)

  I have two Android projects, a 'library project' containing a custom layout, and an 'application project' containing an application which uses the layout. Everything seems to build and execute fine, except that the visual layout editor throws a ClassNotFoundException (which I assume is a bug in the plug-in), but when I try to start to make use of the attributes I defined for the custom layout in the xml, I can no longer build. The layout_horizontalSpacing attribute (and layout_verticalSpacing) is a custom attribute used in the PredicateLayout.LayoutParam class to specify the distance to the next widget. So far I've tried the standard eclipse ways by specifying project references and build path project dependencies. I was also told to try the tag in the application manifest, which did not help. So, what do I need to do for the references in the xml-file to work? • Best Practice for Images with Codeigniter : Generating Thumbs or Resizing on the Fly

  Hi all, I know there’s been a good deal written on thumbnail generation and the like with CI, but I wanted to explain what I’ve made and see what kind of best-practice advice I could find. Here’s my story… Currently, I have a site which allows users to upload collections of photos to projects they’ve created after first creating an account. Upon account creation, the site generates folders for the users in the following fashion for each of five pre-defined projects: /students/username/project_num/images/thumbs/ (This is to say that within a pre-created students folder, the username, project_num, images and thumbs folders are created recursively five times.) When a user uploads images to a project, I have a gallery controller which uploads the full images into the images folder for the project_num, and then creates a smaller thumbnail which maintains its ratio. So far so good. On the index page of the site, where these thumbnails and full images are displayed, I had a bit of a brain lapse, thinking I could simply output the full image while resizing it via css for a ‘medium-size’ image which would lead to the full-size image when clicked. (To be clear, the path is: Click on thumbnail— Load scaled full-size (medium-size) image via ajax into a display area above thumbs— Click on medium-sized image— Load full size image via lightbox, or something of that nature.) I have everything working to this point, except, as one might imagine, resizing the full-sized images with css doesn’t maintain aspect ratio for the thumbs, which means I need to find the best way to resize these. In thinking about it, I figured I had two options: I could resize the image on the fly when the user clicks a thumbnail to load the medium-sized image via ajax. (I have a method ‘get_image($url)’ in my gallery controller which simply loads a view with an image tag and the image source passed to it, etc.) I thought perhaps I could send it first to my gallery model, resize it there on the fly, and send it on to the view. The problem I’m having is that resizing it on the fly and echoing it out gives me the raw image data (I apologize, I don’t know that’s the right term). I’ve tried using data_uris to format the raw data into something echoable, but with no success. Is this method possible? The second option I considered was to generate a second medium-sized thumbnail when the user uploads the image with maintain_ratio set to true. This method is slightly less ideal, given that when providing a way for the user to delete their projects, I’ll need to scan for an additional set of images to delete. Not a huge deal, definitely, but something I figured could be avoided by generating the medium-sized image on the fly. I hope I’ve been clear in my explanations, if long-winded! • Asyncronus javascript rendering widgets

  Hey all, I'm creating a javascript widget so third partys (web designers) can post a link on their website and it will render the widget on their site. Currently, I'm doing this with just a script link tag: <div class="some_random_div_in_html_body"> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://remotehost.com/link/to/widget.js'></script> </div> However, this has the side-effect of slowing down a thrid party's website render times of the page if my site is under a load. Therefore, I'd like the third party website to request the widget link from my site asyncronously and then render it on their site when the widget link loads completely. The Google Analytics javascript snippet seems to have a nice bit of asyncronous code that does a nice async request to model off of, but I'm wondering if I can modify it so that it will render content on the third party's site.   Hello, I am having an incredibly difficult time to decorate a Zend form the way I need to. All ids will be unique of course. All radio buttons in the form belongs to one group. My issue really is that I am unsure how to create and then style the object Zend_Form_Element_MultiCheckbox and Zend_Form_Element_Radio inside my table. Where/how would I apply the appropriate decoraters to the checkboxes and radio buttons to have a form structure like above? Right now I have the opacity at A5 which does turn the background white, however it also starts to obscure the text in the box. Any higher opacity makes the text invisible so I am pretty sure that setting the background of that border is not the right way to do this. Can I set the Background color of the ContentElement somehow through a StoryBoard? Thanks.

  Hello there, I'm using: - Flex SDK 3.5.0 - Parsley 2.2.2. - Flash Builder 4 Down in my src folder (which is configured as part of the source path in the Flash Builder), I have a logging.xml which I configure via Parsley: FlexLoggingXmlSupport.initialize(); XmlContextBuilder.build("com/company/product/util/log/logging.xml"); When I run my application through Flash Builder, the XmlContentBuilder seems to locate the logging.xml (the implementation is a regular URLLoader one). When I compile my application using MXMLC (whether in Ant or command-line), and then run the swf, I get the following error: Cause(0): Error loading com/company/product/util/log/logging.xml: Error in URLLoader - cause: Error #2032: Stream Error. I could not find any argument to provide the MXMLC with that might solve this. I tried using the -dump-config option with the Flash Builder's compiler, then giving that configuration to MXMLC, but it didn't work either. I tried providing the XmlContentBuilder with an absolute path. That worked fine when I compiled with MXMLC via Ant, but still didn't work when I used MXMLC in the command-line... I'd be happy to be enlightened here, regarding all subjects - using MXMLC, accessing resources with relative paths, configuring logging in Parsley, etc. Many thanks in advance, Daniel

• Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to predict Stock Prices

  Given a set of datavery similar to the Motley Fool CAPS system, where individual users enter BUY and SELL recommendations on various equities. What I would like to do is show each recommendation and I guess some how rate (1-5) as to whether it was good predictor<5 (ie corellation coeffient = 1) of the future stock price (or eps or whatever) or a horrible predictor (ie corellation coeffient = -1) or somewhere inbetween. Each recommendation is tagged to a particular user, so that can be tracked over time. I can also track market direction (bullish / bearish) based off of something like sp500 price. The components I think that would make sense in the model would be: user direction (long/short) market direction sector of stock The thought is that some users are better in bull markets than bear (and vice versa), and some are better at shorts than longs- and then a cobination the above. I can automatically tag the market direction and sector (based off the market at the time and the equity being recommended). The thought is that I could present a series of screens and allow me to rank each individual recommendation by displaying available data absolute, market and sector out performance for a specfic time period out. I would follow a detailed list for ranking the stocks so that the ranking is as objective as possible. My assumtion is that a single user is right no more than 57% of the time - but who knows. I could load the system and say "Lets rank the recommendation as a predictor of stock value 90 days forward"; and that would represent a very explicit set of rankings. NOW here is the crux - I want to create some sort of machine learning algorithm that can identify patterns over a series of time so that as recommendations stream into the application we maintain a ranking of that stock (ie. similar to correlation coeeficient) as to the likelihood of that recommendation (in addition to the past series of recommendations ) will affect the price. Now here is the super crux. I have never taken an AI class / read an AI book / never mind specific to machine learning. So I cam looking for guidance - sample or description of a similar system I could adapt. Place to look for info or any general help. Or even push me in the right direction to get started... My hope is to implment this with F# and be able to impress my friends with a new skillset in F# with an implementation of machine learnign and potentially something (application / source) I can include in a tech portfolio or blog space; Thank you for any advice in advance.
