• Automatically detect a new computer connected to the network

  Hi All, Is there an elegant way to make a program detect a new computer that is connected to the network? I would like my program to "auto-sense" a new computer being connected on the network (they're on the same network). Like a USB device being connected to the computer. What I'm doing now is to save a list of all computers in the network from time to time. Another approach is to PING all available IPs on the subnet. Are there any other elegant approaches? Thanks!

  i need a dropdownlist to show current month and year (January 2010) till January 2011, and an additional record of January 2011 +. • [.NET][C#] - Is possible to get a web with its links (CSS,JavaScript,Images, CSS-Images) ?

  Hi there, I am implementing a CMS, the case is that the "Web-Editable" is in a different domain thus, I would be able just get the page using HttpRequest in order to copy and show it in the CMS server to make it able to change it (DOM just visual purpose) and save the changes to the CSS and JavaScript folder on the "Web-Editable" using FTP. I am not allow to download all the information included on the "Web-Editable" trough the FTP, and there are other dinamic images as well comming from a private database. The question is, anyone knows how to make a httprequest "cascade" to get all the 1st level information you see when you visit a Web? Thank you in advance, Efrain

• Python: UTF-8 problems (again...)

  I have a database which is synchronized against an external web source twice a day. This web source contains a bunch of entries, which have names and some extra information about these names. Some of these names are silly and I want to rename them when inserting them into my own database. To rename these silly names, I have a standard dictionary as such: RENAME_TABLE = { "Wsird" : "Weird", ... } As you can see, this is where UTF-8 comes into play. This is the function which performs renaming of all the problematic entries: def rename_all_entries(): all_keys = RENAME_TABLE.keys() entries = Entry.objects.filter(name__in=all_keys) for entry in entries: entry.name = RENAME_TABLE[entry.name] entry.save() So it tries to find the old name in RENAME_TABLE and renames the entry if found. However, I get a KeyError exception when using RENAME_TABLE[entry.name]. Now I'm lost, what do I do? I have... # -*- coding: utf-8 -*- ...in the top of the Python file.

  I have an array with a lot of data from a database. In the array, there are two fields called teameinsid and teamzweiid. The query is a very simple one : $spiel = mysql_query("select teameinsid, teamzweiid from begegnung", $connection) or die("Keine passende Begegnung"); What I need is to search in the database for the names of these IDs. The names are in a different table. What I have now is the following: while($tmp = mysql_fetch_array($spiel)){ $teins = $tmp['teameinsid']; $tzwei = $tmp['teamzweiid']; } So I know the two IDs, but I don't know where to save the names.   Lets say I have such a table: id|time|operation 1 2 read 2 5 write 3 3 read 4 7 read 5 2 save 6 1 open and now I would like to do two things: Divide all these records into two groups: 1) all rows where operation equals to "read" 2) all other rows. Sum the time in each group. So that my query would result only into two rows. What I got so far is: select sum(time) as total_time, operation group by operation ; Although that gives me many groups, depending on the number of distinct operations. • Reflection alternative for switch on enum in order to select namespace/class

  Hi, I have an interface named IHarvester. There are 3 implementations of that interface, each under their own namespace: Google Yahoo Bing A HarvesterManager uses the given harvester. It knows the interface and all 3 implementations. I want some way of letting the class user say in which harvester it wants to use. And in the code select that implementation, without a switch-case implementation. Can reflection save my day? • "Remember" last three MySql queries; Cookie, passed variable or other method?

  I have a classified website, with pretty sophisticated searching, and I am about to implement a function where the last three queries is displayed for the user, so that the user can go back easier through the queries. This because for each query the user has to provide a lot of input. I have four questions for you: I wonder, how can I save the actual query (SELECT * FROM etc etc)...? Do I need to add some form of encryption to be on the safe side? How will this affect performance? (I don't like the fact that cookies slow websites down) Anything else to think about? • MessageBox not shown when opened processing WM_CLOSE from taskbar thumbnail close button

  Trying to put up a "Do you want to save"-dialog when trying to close window with close-button in taskbar thumbnail in windows 7(with aero peek active). Using MessageBox() when processing WM_CLOSE does not work. MessageBox won't show until you move mouse cursor outside thumbnail so aero peek is disabled. Lots of applications have this buggy behaviour so it's probably a design flaw in Windows 7, but for some programs it works (Word, Notepad, Visual Studio, ...), so I'm wondering what trick they are using(or what it takes to "exit" aero peek-mode programmatically). The small "Sound Recorder" application that comes with Windows 7 has the same problem (if you have recorded something without saving and try to close it using thumbnail close-button)...

• Multiple row insertion in a faster way

  Hi, I am using rails and I am trying to insert new rows into the table. The data comes from a text file and I created hash with one of the attribute as key. Then I find all the keys that are currently not in the table. Then I need to insert all of them into the table with all the attributes that I saved in hash. newvals.each{ |x| author = Author.create(:first => x, :second => hash[x][0], :third => hash[x][1]) author.save } This has lot of overhead as it makes an SQL update one at time. The newals array is usually quite big around the size of 20-30k. I know create can insert multiple objects at once, but I cant seem to figure out how. Is there any way to get this done. Thanks.

• How do (or can I) hack a gem temporarily while looking for a bug?

  I have a gem installed in my home directory on a laptop (eg not THE server). I have installed ruby 1.9.1 and also some other gems, notably right_aws - which allows access to s3, etc with ruby. All works, except there is a bug when I do a query on SimpleDB, and the returned list of items includes an item with any two byte utf-8 character in its itemName(). So I look through the sources of the right_aws gem installed on my machine, and I can see some places where I would like to test a fix. If I edit the file, save changes, (needing a password), then restart the server (script/server), it ignores my changes. I am quite new at ruby - do you have to 'compile' or other similar move to get the source code changes made take effect? I can see the edited file is changed by viewing it in terminal, etc.

Anyway, a common sequence that occurs is as follows: Working on task A, making changes to project Has new task B, some bug or functionality needs to be done on project, independent of task A but may affect same set of files Check in task B Check in task A Unfortunately, what I do at this time is two maintain 2 working copies of each project. So I can always work on task B from a clean copy.
