• C++ .NET DLL vs C# Managed Code ? (File Encrypting AES-128+XTS)

  I need to create a Windows Mobile Application (WinMo 6.x - C#) which is used to encrypt/decrypt files. However it is my duty to write the encryption algorithm which is AES-128 along with XTS as the mode of operation. RijndaelManaged just doesn't cut it :( Very much slower than DES and 3DES CryptoServiceProviders :O I know it all depends on how good I am at writing the algorithm in the most efficient way. (And yes I my self have to write it from scratch but i can take a look @ other implementations) Nevertheless, does writing a C++ .NET DLL to create the encryption/decryption algorithm + all the file handling and using it from C# have a significant performance advantage OVER writing the encryption algorithm + file handling in completely managed C# code? If I use C++ .NET to create the encryption algorithm, should I use MFC Smart Device DLL or ATL? What is the difference and is there any impact on which one I choose? And can i just add a reference to the C++ DLL from C# or should I use P/Invoke? I am fairly competent with C# than C++ but performance plays a major role as I have convinced my lecturers that AES is a very efficient cryptographic algorithm for resource constrained devices.   My question is similar but not identical to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1123741/why-cant-my-host-softsyshosting-com-support-beginrequest-and-endrequest-event (I've also read the mvolo blog referenced therein) The goal is to successfully hook HttpApplication.BeginRequest in the IHttpModule.Init event (or anywhere internal to the module), using a normal HttpModule integrated via the system.webServer config, i.e. one that doesn't: invade Global.asax or override the HttpApplication (the module is intended to be self-contained & reusable, so e.g. I have a config like this): <system.webServer> <validation validateIntegratedModeConfiguration="false"/> <modules> <remove name="TheHttpModule" /> <add name="TheHttpModule" type="Company.HttpModules.TheHttpModule" preCondition="managedHandler" /> So far, any strategy I've tried to attach a listener to HttpApplication.BeginRequest results in one of two things, symptom 1 is that BeginRequest never fires, or symptom 2 is that the following exception gets thrown on all managed requests, and I cannot catch & handle it from user code: Stack Trace: [NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.] System.Web.PipelineModuleStepContainer.GetEventCount(RequestNotification notification, Boolean isPostEvent) +30 System.Web.PipelineStepManager.ResumeSteps(Exception error) +1112 System.Web.HttpApplication.BeginProcessRequestNotification(HttpContext context, AsyncCallback cb) +113 System.Web.HttpRuntime.ProcessRequestNotificationPrivate(IIS7WorkerRequest wr, HttpContext context) +616 Commenting out app.BeginRequest += new EventHandler(this.OnBeginRequest) in Init stops the exception of course. Is there some indirect strategy for hooking Application_Start within the module (seems unlikely)? Another event which a) one can hook from a module's constructor or Init method, and b) which is subsequently a safe place to attach BeginRequest event handlers? Thanks much

• What are some techniques to monitor multiple instances of a piece of software?

  I have a piece of self-serve kiosk software that will be running at multiple sites. I'd like to monitor their status remotely. The kiosk application itself is pretty much finished. I am now in the process of creating a piece of software that will monitor all of the kiosks from a central location so that the customer can view particular details remotely (for instance, how many bills are in the acceptor's cash cartridge, what customer is currently logged in, etc.). Because I am in such an early stage of development, my options are quite open. I understand that I'm not giving very many qualifications, but I'd like to try to get a good variety of potential solutions. Some details: Kiosk software is a VB6 app running on Windows Embedded Monitoring software will be run on a modern desktop version of Windows (either XP, Vista, or 7) Database is SQL Server 2008 My initial idea was to develop a .NET app that would simply report the last database transaction for each kiosk at a set interval (say every second or so) but I'd really like for the kiosk software to report its status directly. I'm not exactly sure where to begin in terms of what modifications may need to be made to the kiosk software, and what the monitoring software will require. Links to articles on these topics would be most welcome.

• iPhone Landscape FAQ and Solutions

  There has been a lot of confusion and a set of corresponding set of questions here on SO how iPhone applications with proper handling for Landscape/Portrait mode autorotation can be implemented. It is especially difficult to implement such an application when starting in landscape mode is desired. The most common observed effect are scrambled layouts and areas of the screen where touches are no longer recognized. A simple search for questions tagged iphone and landscape reveals these issues, which occur under certain scenarios: Landscape only iPhone app with multiple nibs: App started in Landscape mode, view from first nib is rendered fine, everything view loaded from a different nib is not displayed correctly. Iphone Landscape mode switching to Portraite mode on loading new controller: Self explanatory iPhone: In landscape-only, after first addSubview, UITableViewController doesn’t rotate properly: Same issue as above. iPhone Landscape-Only Utility-Template Application: Layout errors, controller does not seem to recognize the view should be rotated but displays a clipped portrait view in landscape mode, causing half of the screen to stay blank. presentModalViewController in landscape after portrait viewController: Modal views are not correctly rendered either. A set of different solutions have been presented, some of them including completely custom animation via CoreGraphics, while others build on the observation that the first view controller loaded from the main nib is always displayed correct. I have spent a significant amount of time investigating this issue and finally found a solution that is not only a partial solution but should work under all these circumstances. It is my intend with this CW post to provide sort of a FAQ for others having issues with UIViewControllers in Landscape mode. Please provide feedback and help improve the quality of this Post by incorporating any related observations. Feel free to edit and post other/better answers if you know of any.

• How do I set the default selection for NSTreeController at startup?

  The Background I've built a source list (similar to iTunes et al.) in my Cocoa app. I've got an NSOutlineView, with Value column bound to arrangedObjects.name key path of an NSTreeController. The NSTreeController accesses JGSourceListNode entities in a Core Data store. I have three subclasses of JGSourceListNode - JGProjectNode, JGGroupNode and JGFolderNode. I have selectedIndexPaths on NSTreeController bound to an NSArray called selectedIndexPaths in my App Delegate. Ideally, eventually I want to save the last selection the user had made and restore this on a restart. The Question I'm sure it's possible using some crazy KVO to observe when the NSTreeController or NSOutlineView gets populated then expand the items and change the selection, but that feels clumsy and too much like a work around. How would I do this elegantly?

• Comparing developer productivity tools

  I am getting ready to test developer productivity tools for our team (Coderush, Resharper, JustCode, etc). We're planning to roll the tool out the same time as we deploy Visual Studio 2010 and TFS. I've seen several posts discussing the merits of one tool versus another. However, I haven't been able to find any discussion of a methodology self evaluating. One approach I've seen is to use each tool for a month or so and decide which one you like best. This seems completely reasonable if I were evaluating it for myself, but since I'm evaluating for others as well, I'd like to do something more rigorous. I'm hoping to collect some ideas on how to do that. As a starting point, my thinking was to come up a list of 10-20 crucial features to compare, then prepare a matrix where I can compare the relative strengths of each product. Once the matrix is complete, we can make a well informed decision about which product aligns with out needs. Since I'm not a user of any product now, it's been difficult to figure out which features are critical and which are less so. Thank you!

• Conflict When Two Storyboards Sets the Opacity Property?

  Hi, Background: I have a WPF UserControl (MainControl - not shown in code below) that contains another one (called MyControl in the code below). MainControl has it's DataContext set to an object, that has a Project-property. When MainControl loads, the Project-property is always null. The problem: When MainControl loads, I want to fade in the MyControl using a special storyboard (only used this one time (this "specialFadeInStoryboard" changes Opacity-property of MyControl from 0 to 1). When the Project-property is set to a value other than null, I want the MyControl to fade out using the "fadeOutStoryboard" (changes Opacity-property of MyControl to 0) and if it's set to null afterwards I want to fade it in again this time using the "fadeInStoryboard" (changes Opacity-property of MyControl to 1). However, after adding the code for the "specialFadeInStoryboard", the MyControl is never faded out... • CCSprite with actions crossing the screen boundaries (copy sprite problem)

  Let's say we have a CCSprite object that has an actions tied to it: -(void) moveJack { CCSpriteSheet *sheet = (CCSpriteSheet*)[self getChildByTag:kSheet]; CCSprite *jack = (CCSprite*)[sheet getChildByTag:kJack]; ... CCSequence *seq = [CCSequence actions: jump1, [jump1 reverse], jump2, nil]; [jack runAction:seq]; } If the sprite crosses over the screen boundary, I would like to display it at opposite side. So, original sprite is half displayed on the right side (for example), and half on the left side, because it has not fully crossed yet. Obviously (or is it), I need 2 sprites to achieve this. One on the right side (original), and one on the left side (a copy). The problem is - I don't know how to create exact copy of the original sprite, because tied actions have scaling and blending transformations (sprite is a bit distorted). I would like to have something like: CCSprite *copy = [[jack copy] autorelease]; so that I can add a copy to display it on the correct side (and kill it after transition is over). It should have all the actions tied to it... Any ideas?

• Problem with NSUserDefaults and deallocated Instance

  Hi, I'm having a problem with NSUserDefaults. I've followed the steps in the books as closely as I can for my app, but still get the same problem. I am getting a *** -[NSUserDefaults integerForKey:]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x3b375a0 error when I try and load in the settings. Here is the code that I have, it is in the App Delegate class. - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application { recordingController = [[RecordingTableViewController alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewStylePlain]; [recordingController retain]; // Add the tab bar controller's current view as a subview of the window [window addSubview:tabBarController.view]; [self loadSettings]; } -(void)loadSettings { NSUserDefaults *defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults]; NSNumber loop = [defaults objectForKey:@"loop_preference"]; NSNumber play = [defaults objectForKey:@"play_me_preference"]; NSNumber volume = [defaults objectForKey:@"volume_preference"]; } As you can see I am not trying to do anything with the values yet, but I get the error on the line reading in the loop preference. • How to add a scrollable NSTableView programmatically

  I'm trying to add a tableview to a view in code instead of using Interface Builder and unfortunately it's causing some problems =( Here's an example of how I'm doing it now. NSScrollView *scrollView = [[NSScrollView alloc] initWithFrame:someRect]; NSTableView *tableView = [[NSTableView alloc] initWithFrame: scrollView.bounds]; resultsTableView.dataSource = self; resultsScrollView.documentView = resultsTableView; [someView addSubview: scrollView]; So basically I'm just putting the tableView inside the scrollView (because that's what IB is doing) and then adding the latter as a subview of the someView. The result is that a tableView appears - but the no data is shown within the tableView. Debugging shows that the dataSource is being asked for how many rows are in the tableView but the method: tableView:objectValueForTableColumn:row: is never being called. I suspect that this is because of my way of creating the tableView. I've tried google but no luck and the "Introduction to Table Views Programming Guide" on macdevcenter wasn't helpful either. What am I missing? Thanks in advance...

• MS-Excel Negative times

  I'm writing a spreadsheet for a shop manager. What it does is keep track of the number of hours a worker has worked. So you enter times for Monday-Sunday, and then an adjustment - e.g. if they work 40/40/40/32 hours for the month, then you would have an adjustment of -2/-2/-2/+6 to bring the worker to the 38 hour week that he's being paid for. Some (most) weeks may be adjusted for overtime. The spreadsheet then totals the hours. This spreadsheet is supposed to just be a self-calculating version of a paper form. It needs to match the paper form as it has to be substituted for the old form which is given to some other member of the company (pay clerk, I don't know; I'm not rebuilding their whole system, just replacing a form) I'm having trouble entering a negative time in the adj field - the field has a [h]:mm formatting. and when i enter a negative time (e.g. -2:00) it displays an error, saying "incorrectly formatted equation", with the suggestion that if I was entering a string then I should prefix with a apostrophe. How do I overcome this?

• Getting SSL to work with Apache/Passenger on OSX

  I use apache/passenger on my development machine, but need to add SSL support (something which isn't exposed through the control panel). I've done this before in production, but for some reason I can't seem to get it work on OSX. The steps I've followed so far are from a default apache osx install: Install passenger and passenger preference pane. Add my rails app (this works) Create my ca.key, server.crt and server.key as detailed on the apple website. At this point I need to start editing the apache configs, so I added: # Apache knows to listen on port 443 for ssl requests. • iPhone accelerometer:didAccelerate: seems to not get called while I am running a loop

  An accelerometer related question. (Sorry the formatting may not look right, its the first time I am using this site). I got the accelerometer working as expected using the standard code UIAccelerometer *accel = [UIAccelerometer sharedAccelerometer]; accel.delegate = self; accel.updateInterval = 0.1; //I also tried other update values I use NSLog to log every time the accelerometer:didAccelerate: method in my class is called. The function gets called as expected and everything works fine till here. However, when I run a loop, the above method doesn't seem to get called. Something like this float firstAccelValue = globalAccel; //this is the x-accel value (stored in a global by the above method) float nextAccelValue = firstAccelValue; while (nextAccelValue == firstAccelValue){ //do something nextAccelValue = globalAccel; // note globalAccel is updated by the accelerometer method } The above loop never exits, expectedly since the accelerometer:didAccelerate: method is not getting called, and hence globalAccel never changes value. If I use a fixed condition to break the while loop, I can see that after the loop ends, the method calls work fine again. Am I missing something obvious here? Or does the accelerometer method not fire when certain processing is being done? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  I'm new to the concept so don't be hard on me. why doesn't this code produce a destructor call ? The names of the classes are self-explanatory. The SString will print a message in ~SString(). • How to display a subview loaded from a separate NIB file

  I'm developing a Cocoa desktop application that uses a source list in the style of iTunes: different elements in the source list cause the main content area to display different views. The content area is entirely filled with a (vertical) NSSplitView; on the left is an NSOutlineView source list. When the user selects an item on the left, the relevant view appears on the right side of the splitter. I can make it work well enough by putting everything in one NIB file and putting a borderless NSTabView to the right of the splitter; to switch views, I just have to change the selected tab. But putting all the views in one NIB is bad practice, so I'm trying to move each of the subviews into their own NIB files. I have a pretty good idea of most of this process — I've created an NSViewController subclass for each of these views (EntityDetailViewController, GroupDetailViewController, and so on), set the File's Owner of each new NIB to the relevant controller class, set the view connection in each NIB, and reworked the bindings. What I don't know is how to actually change which subview is being shown on screen. I've tried using the default generic NSView on the right side and sending it addSubview: messages; I've tried connecting to it as the first subview and calling NSView *newSubview = /* get subview from the new subview controller */ [[subview superview] replaceSubview:subview with:newSubview]; [self setSubview:newSubview]; But everything just leaves the space blank. How do I display a subview loaded from a separate NIB?

• What's the fastest way to get CRUD over CGI on a database handle in Perl?

  TL;DR: Want to write CGI::CRUD::Simple (a minimalist interface module for CGI::CRUD), but I want to check first if i overlooked a module that already does that. I usually work with applications that don't have the niceties of having frameworks and such already in place. However, a while ago i found myself in a situation where i was asking myself: "Self, i have a DBI database handle and a CGI query object, isn't there a module somewhere that can use this to give me some CRUD so i can move on and work on other things instead of spending hours writing an interface?" A quick survey on CPAN gave me: CGI::Crud Catalyst::Plugin::CRUD Gantry::Plugins::CRUD Jifty::View::Declare::CRUD CatalystX::CRUD Catalyst::Controller::CRUD CatalystX::CRUD::REST Catalyst::Enzyme Now, I didn't go particularly in-depth when looking at these modules, but, safe the first one, they all seem to require the presence of some sort of framework. Please tell me if i was wrong and i can just plug any of those into a barebones CGI script. CGI::CRUD seemed to do exactly what i wanted, although it did insist on being used through a rather old and C-like script that must be acquired on a different site and then prodded in various ways and manners to produce something useful. I went with that and found that it works pretty neat and that it should be rather easy to write a simple and easy-to-use module that provides a very basic [dbh, cgi IN]-[html OUT] interface to it. However, as my previous survey was rather short and i may have been hasty in dismissing modules or missed others, i find myself wondering whether that would only be duplication of work already done. As such i ponder the question in the title. PS: I tend to be too short in some of my explanations and make too many assumptions that others think about things similarly as me, resulting in leaving out critical details. If you find yourself wondering just what exactly I am thinking about when i say CRUD, please poke me in comments and I'll amend the question.

Possibly something to do with 100 continue? I tried writing a python client which might help clarify: h1 = httplib.HTTPConnection('localhost:8080') h1.request("POST", "http://localhost:8080/my", body, headers) print h1.getresponse() body = the contents of the example.zip, and headers = empty dictionary. This request eventually timed out without printing anything, which I think exonerates curl from being the issue, so I believe something is going on in web.py which isn't quite right (or at least not sufficiently clear) Any web.py experts got some tips? • The "first past the post election" query problem

  This problem may seem like school work, but it isn't. At best it is self-imposed school work. I encourage any teachers to take is as an example if they wish. "First past the post" elections are single-round, meaning that whoever gets the most votes win, no second rounds. Suppose a table for an election. CREATE TABLE ElectionResults ( DistrictHnd INTEGER NOT NULL, PartyHnd INTEGER NOT NULL, CandidateName VARCHAR2(100) NOT NULL, TotalVotes INTEGER NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY DistrictHnd, PartyHnd); The table has two foreign keys: DistrictHnd points to a District table (lists all the different electoral districts) and PartyHnd points to a Party table (lists all the different political parties). I won't bother with other tables here, joining them is trivial. This is just a wee bit of context. The question: What SQL query will return a table listing the DistrictHnd, PartyHnd, CandidateName and TotalVotes of the winners (max votes) in each District? This does not suppose any particular database system. If you wish to stick to a particular implementation of SQL, go the way of SQLite and MySQL. If you can devise a better schema (or an easier one), that is acceptable too. Criteria: simplicity, portability to other databases.

• Play multiple audio files using AVAudioPlayer

  Hi all, I am planning on releasing 10 of my song recordings for free but bundled in an iphone app. They are not available on web or itunes or anywhere as of now. I am new to iphone sdk (latest) as you can imagine, so I have been going through the developer documentation, various forums and stackoverflow to learn. Apple's avTouch sample application was a great start. But I want my app to play all the 10 tracks one by one. All the songs are added to resources folder and are named as track1, track2...track10. In the avTouch app code I can see the following 2 parts which is where I think I need to make changes to achieve what I am looking for. • Tracking iPhone on Yahoo Web Analytics using ASIHTTPRequest

  I'm trying to track an event in my app using Yahoo Web Analytics. The code I am using looks like ASIHTTPRequest *yahooTrack = [ASIHTTPRequest requestWithURL: [NSURL URLWithString:@"http://s.analytics.yahoo.com/p.pl?a=xxxxxxxxxxxxx&js=no&b=yyyyyyyyyyyy&cf6=zzzzzzzzzzz"]]; yahooTrack.didFinishSelector = @selector(statisticsFinished:); yahooTrack.delegate = self; [yahooTrack startAsynchronous]; Then the statisticsFinished looks like: NSLog(@"Cookies: %@", request.requestCookies); NSLog(@"Redircount: %d", [request redirectCount]); NSLog(@"Responsecode %d %@\nMsg: %@", request.responseStatusCode, request.responseStatusMessage, [request responseString]); And all the information I get back looks correct. Cookies are set, redirectcount is 1 the first time (as it redirects to s.analytics.yahoo.com/itr.pl?.... a normal browser does). Then the redirectcount is 0 for subsequent request until the app is restarted and session cleared. The responseString returns GIF89a. Even if the data looks correct, Yahoo still won't track. As soon as I call the tracking url directly in my browser it works as expected. I realize Flurry is a better option, but I'm forced to use Yahoo in this case. Also, using a UIWebView probably would work, but I'm against putting in a webview just for tracking purposes. Is there any difference in how ASIHTTPRequest and Safari would handle a call to a simple URL as this? Or do you see anything else that could explain why the tracking isn't working?

• Adding a dynamic image to UITable View Cell

  Hi, I have a table in which I want a dynamic image to load in at the left-hand side. The table needs to use an IF statement to select the appropriate image from the "Resources" folder, and needs to be based upon [dog types]. The [dog types] is extracted from an RSS feed, and so the image in the table cell needs to match the each cell's [dog types] tag. Update: See code below for what I'm looking to do (only below it's for earthquakes, for me its pictures of dogs). I suspect I need to use - (UIImage *)imageForTypes:(NSString *)types { to do such a thing. Thanks. Updated code: This is for Apple's Earthquake sample but does exactly what I need to do. • iphone webview dynamic font support

  Friends, I am trying to build a simple iphone application to view a local webpage that uses dynamic fonts. The url is www.eenadu.net. I have just a single view based application and inserted a webview into the view and implementing the webviewdelegate in viewcontroller. The site uses ttf/eot fonts that are dynamically downloadable by browser from http://www.eenadu.net/eenadu.ttf or http://www.eenadu.net/EENADU0.eot. • How can UISearchDisplayController autorelease cause crash in a different view controller?

  Hi, I have two view controllers A and B. From A, I navigate to view controller B as follows: // in View Controller A // navigateToB method -(void) navigateToB { BViewController *bViewController = [[BViewController alloc] initWithNibName: @"BView" bundle:nil]; bViewController.bProperty1 = SOME_STRING_CONSTANT; bViewController.title = @"A TITLE OF A VC's CHOOSING"; [self.navigationController pushViewController: bViewController animated:YES]; [bViewController release]; //<----- releasing 0x406c1e0 } In BViewController, the property bPropery1 is defined with copy as below (note, B also contains UITableView and other properties): @property (nonatomic, copy) NSString *bProperty1; Everything appeared to work fine when navigating back and forth between A and B. That is until I added a UISearchDisplayController to the table view contained in BViewController. Now when I navigate out of B, back to A, the app crashes. In navigateToB method, once the bViewController is released (after pushViewController), that's should be it for bViewController. Nothing else even knows about it as it is local to the navigateToB method block and it has been released. When navigating from B back to A, nothing is invoked in viewDidLoad, viewWillAppear etc that will re-enter navigateToB. It looks like somehow search display controller has a reference to something in my AViewController and so as it is autoreleased it is taking this "something" down with it but I cannot understand how this is possible, especially as I'm using copy to pass data between A and B. I'm going potty over this. I'm sure this is my mistake somewhere and so I turn to you, Stack Overflow legends for any words of wisdom or advice on how to resolve this. Many Thanks.

• Confused over behavior of List.mapi in F#

  I am building some equations in F#, and when working on my polynomial class I found some odd behavior using List.mapi Basically, each polynomial has an array, so 3*x^2 + 5*x + 6 would be [|6, 5, 3|] in the array, so, when adding polynomials, if one array is longer than the other, then I just need to append the extra elements to the result, and that is where I ran into a problem. Later I want to generalize it to not always use a float, but that will be after I get more working. So, the problem is that I expected List.mapi to return a List not individual elements, but, in order to put the lists together I had to put [] around my use of mapi, and I am curious why that is the case.
