  • Checking Available Memory allocation in C#

    i need to create a function in my application to set its available memory usage. What i want to do is when the application is running, and it reaches to the set memory settings, i'll have to switch from saving to the memory to saving to a file to the local drive to avoid application hang. Is this a better way to do? What things to consider when doing this in terms of memory allocation? Hope you understand :) Thanks, Jepe

  • Should I deal with files longer than MAX_PATH?

    Just had an interesting case. My software reported back a failure caused by a path being longer than MAX_PATH. The path was just a plain old document in My Documents, e.g.: C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\Some Stupid FOlder Name\A really ridiculously long file thats really very very very..........very long.pdf Total length 269 characters (MAX_PATH==260). The user wasn't using a external hard drive or anything like that. This was a file on an Windows managed drive. So my question is this. Should I care? I'm not saying can I deal with the long paths, I'm asking should I. Yes I'm aware of the "\?\" unicode hack on some Win32 APIs, but it seems this hack is not without risk (as it's changing the behaviour of the way the APIs parse paths) and also isn't supported by all APIs . So anyway, let me just state my position/assertions: First presumably the only way the user was able to break this limit is if the app she used uses the special Unicode hack. It's a PDF file, so maybe the PDF tool she used uses this hack. I tried to reproduce this (by using the unicode hack) and experimented. What I found was that although the file appears in Explorer, I can do nothing with it. I can't open it, I can't choose "Properties" (Windows 7). Other common apps can't open the file (e.g. IE, Firefox, Notepad). Explorer will also not let me create files/dirs which are too long - it just refuses. Ditto for command line tool cmd.exe. So basically, one could look at it this way: a rouge tool has allowed the user to create a file which is not accessible by a lot of Windows (e.g. Explorer). I could take the view that I shouldn't have to deal with this. (As an aside, this isn't an vote of approval for a short max path length: I think 260 chars is a joke, I'm just saying that if Windows shell and some APIs can't handle 260 then why should I?). So, is this a fair view? Should I say "Not my problem"? Thanks! John

I thought of various alternative: Storing a log in a TextField, open it and update it every time the model is saved. Alternatively pickle a list and store it in a TextField. Save logs on hard drive.   • Monitoring multiple sites on a single server using OpsView

    We have several web servers. On each of these servers there can be ~250 web sites. I need to add a HTTP check for each site on each server. Each site has a reserved host header that we know can always be resolved in the format of: w10000.hostchecks.mycompany.com w10020.hostchecks.mycompany.com w11992.hostchecks.mycompany.com ..and so on.. What I want is for there to be a master ping check on the web server's main IP address and then separate HTTP checks for each of the sites on the server. If the master ping test fails then I want the HTTP tests to cease until the master ping check goes OK. I had a stab at this and tried do the following: Create a parent host that does a ping check on the server's main ip address (e.g. server is named WEB0001). For each of the sites that reside on WEB0001: Create a separate Host with a Primary Hostname of wXXXXX.hostchecks.mycompany.com Make WEB0001 the parent host Add a monitor (HTTP check to a special url that is mapped into each site using a virtual directory: H- $HOSTADDRESS$ -u /__hostcheck/IsAlive.aspx -w 5 -c 10 -p 80 However I find that if I down the parent server (WEB0001) the http checks seem to continue. Am I going about this completely the wrong way?

  • Subclipse does not recognize my project as an SVN project

    From SVN I checked out a "myproject" folder to my hard drive. It happens to be an Eclipse project, so I imported it into Eclipse and I can work on it. I have Subclipse installed and working as expected on other projects in the same Eclipse workspace. But for some reason, "myproject" does not have the usual Subclipse controls like TeamCommit or the decorations. Did I miss any obvious steps?

  • Group policy not applying to security group

    Preface: I have enough privileges to create GPOs in my OU, and have made a few of them for some simple tasks (like deploying a printer to certain users). Not actually a sysadmin...I'm a developer who is winging it. I wanted to create a GPO that would set a mapped folder for a certain security group (which I recently created and that contains only myself). Did the following: Created the GPO in MyOU - Users Removed the default Authenticted Users under Security Filtering Add the security group with my account to Security Filtering Set up the mapping via the User Configuration option Changed GPO Status to "Computer configuration settings disabled" Left WMI filtering to Closed the GPO at this point... Logged in as the target user; ran gpupdate /force Logged out, logged in, ran gpresult /r, no mention of my GPO Rebooted Logged in, re-ran gpupdate /force Logged out, logged in, ran gpresult /r, still no mention of my GPO If I log in with another completely different user, their RSOP information shows that the new GPO is being ignored due to a security restriction, so it appears to be "working" for other users. I just can't get it to actually show up in RSOP for the user it should be working. Is there anything else I can do short of rebooting endlessly and crossing my fingers?

  • Compiling PHP with GD and libjpeg support

    I compile my own PHP, partly to learn more about how PHP is put together, and partly because I'm always finding I need modules that aren't available by default, and this way I have control over that. My problem is that I can't get JPEG support in PHP. Using CentOS 5.6. Here are my configuration options when compiling PHP 5.3.8: './configure' '--enable-fpm' '--enable-mbstring' '--with-mysql' '--with-mysqli' '--with-gd' '--with-curl' '--with-mcrypt' '--with-zlib' '--with-pear' '--with-gmp' '--with-xsl' '--enable-zip' '--disable-fileinfo' '--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/lib/' The ./configure output says: checking for GD support... yes checking for the location of libjpeg... no checking for the location of libpng... no checking for the location of libXpm... no And then we can see that GD is installed, but that JPEG support isn't there: # php -r 'print_r(gd_info());' Array ( [GD Version] => bundled (2.0.34 compatible) [FreeType Support] => [T1Lib Support] => [GIF Read Support] => 1 [GIF Create Support] => 1 [JPEG Support] => [PNG Support] => 1 [WBMP Support] => 1 [XPM Support] => [XBM Support] => 1 [JIS-mapped Japanese Font Support] => ) I know that PHP needs to be able to find libjpeg, and it obviously can't find a version it's happy with. I would have thought /usr/lib/libjpeg.so or /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.62 would be what it needs, but I supplied it with the correct lib directory (--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/lib/) and it doesn't pick them up so I guess they can't be the right versions. rpm says libjpeg is installed. Should I yum remove and reinstall it, and all it's dependent packages? Might that fix the problem?     Hi All, I have ear deployed in jboss 5.0.1, on windows 2008 which is 64 bit machine and we are using 64jvm, with this combination our VFS temp size increases a lot eventually all our physical hard drive space is used by replicating files. but if we change our JVm from 64 to 32 every thing looks ok. does any one one what is reason ?and possible solution as we want ot use 64bit jvm.   • How is a subdomain passed to the webserver?

    I know that dns resolves an address like example.com to an IP address like 11.22.33.44, but I'm a little confused about how subdomains are resolved, so that when you type http://subdomain.example.com, what actually gets passed to the server at 11.22.33.44? In other words, example.com = 11.22.33.44, but subdomain.example.com/path = ??? Are "subdomain" and "path" passed as http headers, or mapped in the url in some way, or what? Thanks in advance. Edit: If I'm understanding correctly, BloodPhilia says that subdomain.example.com actually is a different domain that in principle could resolve to a totally different IP. But if that's so, then what about hosts that have huge numbers of (what look like) subdomains, but which actually map to some path on the site. For instance, blogspot hosts millions of blogs, and they all look like this: aaa.blogspot.com bbb.blogspot.com ...millions more... yyy.blogspot.com zzz.blogspot.com Those are clearly not subdomains with their own IP's, but rather some mapping like aaa.blogspot.com -- www.blogspot.com/aaa, but how is this accomplished? What actually gets passed to the web server at blogspot.com?

    I've happily implemented v2 of Google maps to my site without a hitch, I also successfully perform a drive directions using GDirections.load(). What I need to do is stop the popup of the mini map when you select a particular step in the routing directions.   • SVN, Samba and Symbolic Links. How to get them all to play together?

    I've got a website project under version control that relies on files from an unversioned directory on the same server via Symbolic Links. I'm currently storing the symbolic links in the repository. The idea is that if someone checks out a working copy on to the same server they can edit and test the working copy of the project before committing it back to the repository. When they checkout their working copy it successfully sets up the symlinks so that the entire site works when testing. The users that work on the project are Windows users, so I've set a samba shares on the server and then mapped them to network drives in Windows. People can edit their working copies directly on the server via network shares and then test them in the web browser before committing their changes back to the repository via TortoiseSVN. The Problem The problem I have is that Samba resolves the symlinks as expected but when a user tries to commit their changes back to the repository, TortoiseSVN thinks the linked files are part of the project and tries to commit the target files to the repository and not the symlinks themselves. I tried turning off symlink support in samba which means that the linked files cannot be resolved as I don't really want people to have access to the linked files nor do I want to import the linked files in the repository. The problem with this is that I get Can't stat '\webserver\projects\working\project\symlinked_file.php'. Access is denied Apart from the symlink problem everything else works 100% perfectly. Users can either checkout website projects to their machine and work on them (but can't test) or checkout them out to their space on the dev web server and work on them and fully test. So I don't want to change the workflow process, I just need a solution to the symbolic link issue. Many thanks.   • Best approach to write huge xml data to file?

I'm currently exporting a database table with huge data (100000+ records) into an xml file using XmlTextWriter class and I'm writing directly to a file on the physical drive. _XmlTextWriterObject = new XmlTextWriter(_xmlFilePath, null); While my code runs ok, my question is that is it the best approach? Or should I write the whole xml in memory stream first and then write the xml document in physical file from memory stream? And what are the effects on memory/ performance in both cases?
