• /etc/init.d Character Encoding Issue

  I have a script in /etc/init.d on an EC2 image that, on machine startup, pulls in source code via SVN, builds it, and then runs it using Ant. The source code is Java. Within this code is a call to the Weka library which writes a file to disk. On most Ubuntu AMIs, and my home machines' versions of Ubuntu, there is no issue. The problem is that with certain versions/AMIs of Ubuntu, Unicode characters in the file are replaced with question marks ('?'). If I run the job manually on the trouble instance, Unicode is output to file correctly, but not when run from /etc/init.d. What might be causing this problem and how can I fix it so that Unicode characters appear correctly in files written from /etc/init.d processes?

• Getting App.config to be configuration specific in VS2010

  I recently wanted to have a console application that had configuration specific settings. For instance, if I had two configurations “Debug” and “Release”, depending on the currently selected configuration I wanted it to use a specific configuration file (either debug or config). If you are wanting to do something similar, here is a potential solution that worked for me. Setting up a demo app to illustrate the point First, let’s set up an application that will demonstrate the most basic concept. using System; using System.Configuration; namespace ConsoleSpecificConfiguration { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Config"); Console.WriteLine(ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["Example Config"]); Console.ReadLine(); } } }   This does a really simple thing. Display a config when run. To do this, you also need a config file set up. My default looks as follows… <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <appSettings> <add key="Example Config" value="Default"/> </appSettings> </configuration>   Your entire solution will look as follows… Running the project you will get the following amazing output…   Let’s now say instead of having one config file we want depending on whether we are running in “Debug” or “Release” for the solution configuration we want different config settings to be propagated across you can do the following… Step 1 – Create alternate config Files First add additional config files to your solution. You should have some form of naming convention for these config files, I have decided to follow a similar convention to the one used for web.config, so in my instance I am going to add a App.Debug.config and a App.Release.config file BUT you can follow any naming convention you want provided you wire up the rest of the approach to use this convention. My files look as follows.. App.Debug.config <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <appSettings> <add key="Example Config" value="Debug"/> </appSettings> </configuration>   App.Release.config <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <configuration> <appSettings> <add key="Example Config" value="Release"/> </appSettings> </configuration>   Your solution will now look as follows… Step 2 – Create a bat file that will overwrite files The next step is to create a bat file that will overwrite one file with another. If you right click on the solution in the solution explorer there will be a menu option to add new items to the solution. Create a text file called “copyifnewer.bat” which will be our copy script. • Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't detect Intel integrated graphics (i7-2670QM CPU)

  The laptop I'm using is an MSI GT683DX-847PT that comes with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX570M discrete GPU, and an Intel Core i7-2670QM CPU. According to Intel's description of the Core i7-2670QM CPU, it has an HD Graphics 3000 integrated GPU. The problem is that the Intel integrated graphics GPU doesn't come up in lspci nor in lshw, only the NVIDIA GPU shows up. Why doesn't the Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU show up? Any tests I could make to verify the presence of an integrated GPU?

• How to make pulseaudio work again?

  I was having problems with sound (mono only output), so following advice from another askubuntu question I made some edits in /etc/pulse/default.pa After rebooting I had no sound at all. So I deleted /etc/pulse/default.pa entirely and tried another reboot. I did not backup the file (stupid, I know). How to come back to working config? edit: I tried: sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio (reboot) sudo apt-get install pulseaudio (reboot) It's still not working. The file /etc/pulse/default.pa is missing. Here's what pulseaudio and pacmd commands show: $ pulseaudio E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup without any loaded modules, refusing to work. $ pacmd No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon.

• Max Degree of Parallelism Server-Side Setting

  Recently I opened a case with Microsoft PSS to help us through a severe performance problem on a new system.  As part of that case, the PSS engineer checked our “max degree of parallelism” server-side setting.  It is our standard to use 4 on our production systems that have 16 CPUs (2 sockets, quad-core, hyper-threaded).  The PSS engineer had me run the below query to get Microsoft’s recommended value of “max degree of parallelism” server-side setting for our 16-CPU system: select case when cpu_count / hyperthread_ratio > 8 then 8 else cpu_count / hyperthread_ratio end as optimal_maxdop_setting from sys.dm_os_sys_info; The query returned 2.  I made the change using sp_configure, and it did not resolve our issue.  We have decided to leave it in place for now.   Do you agree with this query?  What are your thoughts on this? If you decide to change your setting to reflect the output of this query, please test it first to ensure there are no negative side effects.

However, its output is just a text. One issue is that if I want to share it, I lose colors. I'd also like to fold and unfold parts of objects, quickly jump to specific processes and what not? Adding comments, for example. Thus I want something web-based. What is the best approach to implement features like these? I haven't worked with web interfaces before and I don't have much experience with Ruby.

• How can you print a text file via gedit from the command line?

  I'd like to use gedit or some similar program just as a page formatter and pipe some text through it and onto the printer. | lpr just doesn't cut it in the presentation department. The printed output is subpar, even if I try to tinker with the margin and font size options. But I like the way text looks like when printed from gedit. Is there a way to have the best of both worlds and use a command line pipeline to print a text file with gedit-quality formatting?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.10 today on my Lenovo w500. After that when i tried running sudo apt-get update This is the error i am getting. As a result of this, I am unable to install any new packages.

  I’ve been trying to use RML to process some files and couldn’t figure out why the numbers where all so much smaller than they should be. I then found a line in the RML output “Found [TRACE_STOP] event indicating the end of the trace files” This causes RML to stop processing further data, oh. In my case I had stopped the trace to add some error events because the client was experiencing errors. How do I get RML to process all the other data I wondered. • Question about wifi connection files/certificates

• Markdown, LaTeX combined in WYSIWYG editor. Is there any?

  I really like the way markdown is implemented in SE bunch of sites, where I can easily write code blocks, performing formatting or even use latex on some of sites like writing $\pi$. I also like how this online editor looks and feels. But it's all online. Is there any offline WYSIWYG analogs of notepag or WMD in Ubuntu that optionally supports pdf as an output format? Both markdown and latex desired. I desire to simultaneously use Markdown and LaTeX. I'm planing to use an editor for writing some technical stuff with math, but it's annoying to be constantly in "LaTeX-mode". So it would be awesome to immerse in LaTeX when I need formulas and use markdown when I need to speak on natural language. UPD. Almost all answers was quite useful, but none of them answers directly on my question. I'll accept @N.N. answer as a most complete.

The problem is that, the Urdu text is rendered in reverse order. For example, consider the word ??? (which means work) consisting of the three letters: ? , ? , and ? The output is rendered in reverse order as ??? consisting of the three letters: ?, ?, and ? When copying this text to Open Office or opening the generated XML file in Firefox, the generated result is absolutely desired. How can this problem be solved?

• Triple monitor setup with an ATI Radeon 4200?

  I have a relatively new Powerspec computer (i5 quad core processor, about a year or two old) and just grabbed a new relatively inexpensive ($40?) graphics card. It has 1 DVI, one VGA, and one HDMI output. I have two (different type) monitors plugged into the DVI and VGA slots, and they work great. However, I cannot seem to be able to get a third monitor in the HDMI slot to work. I can see the monitor (and monitor info) show up in display settings. However, if I try to switch the monitor to 'on' and click apply, nothing happens. Anyone have the slightest idea what the problem might be? (It's a Radeon graphics card FYI; if I remember right I think it was the Radeon 4200?)

• How to send packets via a pptp vpn tunnel?

  I'm trying to send certain port traffic through my ppp0 interface it's a pptp vpn tunnel, First, I'm using a wireless usb interface, I connect up to my access point, then I initiate my vpn, there is a connection but I do not channel all connexions through that, nor do I want to, so, say I want to channel all port 80 packets through my vpn (interface dev ppp0). I first run: iptables -t mangle -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j MARK --set-mark 0xa to mark the correct packets then I add a table named vpn_table, I then add ip route add default dev ppp0 table vpn_table when I do that traffic begins to dribble through the ppp0, but no pages load. I supose I must have caused some sort of coflict, or the route I'm adding in vpn_table isn't quite right. I'm not sure, I think I'm marking the packets correctly but I can't be sure of that either. UPDATE: I think i've got part of the issue solved: running tcpdump -i ppp0 showed me that indeed there was outgoing requests via ppp0, now, there is never a response, and pages do not load with using that interface..i'm still missing something.

I set following values for coin and striker body: Coin body (circle with radius - 15/PTM_RATIO): density = 20.0f; friction = 0.4f; restitution = 0.6f; Striker body (circle with radius - 15/PTM_RATIO): density = 25.0f; friction = 0.6f; restitution = 0.3f; Output is not smooth. When I apply ApplyLinearImpulse(force,position) the coin movement looks like floating in the air - takes too much time to stop. What values for coin and striker make it look like real carrom?

• Is it possible to install ZSNES Emulator from default software sources?

  I can find it listed when I search for "zsnes" in the Ubuntu Software Center but it doesn't have the "Install" button. If I click the "More information" button I'll get a "package not found" message. Synaptic can't find this package either. (from user @REJ) I have Natty 64bit. When I run sudo apt-get install zsnes it gives the following output: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package zsnes is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source E: Package 'zsnes' has no installation candidate

• Random number generation algorithm for human brains?

  Are you aware of, or have you devised, any practical, simple-to-learn "in-head" algorithms that let humans generate (somewhat "true") random numbers? By "in-head" I mean.. preferrably without any external tools or devices. Also, a high output (many random numbers per minute) is desirable. Asked this on SO but it didn't get much interest. Maybe this is better suited for programmers.. :) I'm genuinely curious about anything that people might have come up with on this problem.

• Cannot connect to Solaris Server when Oracle GoldenGate process uses the port

  I'm trying to test the Oracle goldengate to replicate data between two databases on the same server. So I installed two databases and two goldengate homes in the same machine. The goldengate processes are started from each home and they are responsible for the replication : Process from home 1 configured on port 7809 & process for home 2 configured on port 7810. For a successful replication, processes started from goldengate home 1 should communicate with processes started from goldengate home 2. But for some reasons, this is not happening. The goldengate log file has the following error : OGG-01223 Oracle GoldenGate Capture for Oracle, exthrr.prm: TCP/IP error 131 (Connection reset by peer). "Googling" for this error, it said that the connection occurred but the host terminated it. Tried to telnet the machine with the used port and it gave the following error: bash-3.00$ telnet 10.10.3.124 7810 Trying 10.10.3.124... Connected to 10.10.3.124. Escape character is '^]'. Connection to 10.10.3.124 closed by foreign host. Here the communication occurs but for only around 3 seconds then it is closed by the host, which is the same explanation of the above error in the goldengate log file. I tried to change the port but still the same error. The problem is happening only when the goldengate process is using the port. When other process is using the same port, I can telnet successfully.

• Help identifying device and driver for 0bda:1724

  I've got a new Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13. The onboard lan/bluetooth device is identified in Linux as 0bda:1724 (via lsusb). No network peripherals are reported from lspci. From the interwebs, the vendor:product above looks to be RT2573, however, in Windows, the device is identified as RTL8723A. Unfortunately, I have followed both roads, trying rt2500usb, rt2x00usb, and rtl8723e. I have emailed Realtek asking them for help but so far my email has fallen on deaf ears. • Standby Problem, PC can not enter Standby mode

  I have a problem with the Standby function: My Computer does not enter the Standby mode with Ubuntu 14.04LTS. If I remeber me right it, works with Ubuntu 13.10 but this Version was not long installed on this PC. Now when i press Standby in the menu or on my Keyboard the Display turns black for a few seconds, then some messages appear for a very short moment on the screen. After that, the the log-in screen appear. Two times I was able to enter Standby but the other times it fails. Tecnical Data about my PC: Ubuntu 14.04 with all Updates main storage: 3,8GiBprocessor: Intel® Core™ i3-2330M CPU @ 2.20GHz × 4 graphic: Intel® Sandybridge Mobile graphic board: NVIDA GEFORCE GT 555M CUDA 1GB Dual Boot System with win7 x64Bit Medion P6812 Laptop Here is the message output: Usally I got only a half of the screen filled with messages like that. When I filmed it it was much more. I dont know, maybe this is a Bug.
