• How to upgrade to 12.10 daily build from 12.04? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I upgrade to the development release (aka. Ubuntu+1)? I was suggested these commands when I searched for it on Google: sudo sed -i 's/precise/quantal/g' /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade But, I don't know whether that works or not. So my question is: How to upgrade 12.04 to the 12.10 daily build? How to rollback to 12.04 if the daily build breaks? You might ask me why I want to try something like that... it's probably because I want to check out all the new upgrades that have been done in quantal. Another bonus question: If I select the "precise-proposed" updates in Update Manager, how close will my 12.04 come off to the 12.10? Are these precise proposed updates same as "quantal-proposed"? What are the differences?

  can someone tell me what I need to do... I downloaded MetaTrader4 setup.exe onto my computer with a new harddrive and new install of ubuntu. I have downloaded wine, and 7zip... I right clicked the setup file... selected "open with Wine Windows Program loader" ... It looks like its going to open and then it closes the icon on the launcher that had appeared as it went to open... What are the settings i need to change? How do I get to "software sources? I am new to linux and new to ubuntu... so please don't assume anything... I am an idiot... lol

• Windows 7 very slow after restart, but fine after complete shutdown?

  I have a Dell pc running Windows 7 with the Intel i3 processor. Whenever I restart the computer, the os crawls. For example, I move the mouse and then I see it move on the screen 10 seconds later... Everything runs slowly. This happens only on a restart (it's fine when I turn it on after it has been shut down). Any ideas what is causing this (I haven't installed any new software since buying it). Does it sound like a hardware or software issue?

  So I upgraded on a fresh install to ubuntu 12.10, not beta, and I've tried installing wine many mannnnyy times now many different ways but the jist of it is this "This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. • sticky bit on NFS file system

  I have a system where to the main server (homes, nfs, ntp, queue...) can log-in only root – all the other users use front-end host with NFS-mounted home directories (RW) and all other software directories (read-only). My problem is, that time to time, if root or normal user with sudo makes some administrative works on front-end some homes of normal users getting sticky bits (drwsr-sr-x). If it happens usually the user can't log-in (as long as permission for his home are not changed to drwxr-xr-x). The last time I saw it after compiling some new software (normal user configure;make) and installation from the same directory as root (su and make install or direct as normal user sudo make install). Can somebody explain me why it happens and what should I do to get rid of this problem? p.s. I'm using CentOS 5.7

I want to get a list of “unsupported” software—that is, software that doesn’t come from the “main” repository, and for which Ubuntu does not guarantee security updates. Note: This is a server. • Moving soon, fiancee has new job: how to transition?

  I've found myself in a sort of conundrum lately and I figured Stack Overflow would be the place to ask this question. I normally post under my personal account here, but I'm writing in anonymously this time so as to make sure my co-workers don't find out too early that I'll be leaving them behind in a few months. My fiancee just landed a great software development job at a very large, stable company. She'll be starting after she graduates and just after we get married (May to June-ish). Her compensation and benefits package will be more than enough to take care of both of us, so I agreed to step down from my current position so we could move to a larger city with more opportunities. I'll probably take a few weeks off to decompress, but I don't want to stay unemployed very long. Since there will be less pressure on me to bring home a second income though, we're not as adverse to risk as we normally would be. I'm currently debating whether to eventually seek employment at a small company, a larger company, do contract work, or do something else entirely. I haven't been in the software development business long (2-3 years plus some small personal projects), but I've seen what things can be like at a startup (my first job) and at a more established, mid-sized business (my current job). Most importantly what I'm looking for out of a new employment opportunity is challenge and variety. Does this situation describe anyone on SO? If so, what did you do/what are you doing? How is it working out for you? Programming is a pleasure as well as a career skill for me, so I want to make sure it stays that way. Thanks to all in advance for any responses.

• What security changes are necessary when connecting DSL modem directly to PC instead of router?

  Windows XP I have a user with a single PC that was connected to the internet via a standard home router. The router is now having hardware-related issues and to save money, they're considering connecting the PC directly to the DSL modem since they don't need to share the internet connection or need wireless functionality. If they decide to do that, I'm concerned that this will introduce additional security concerns. Is the Windows Firewall sufficient and Microsoft Security Essentials sufficient for protecting a computer directly connected to a DSL Modem? Or is other security software needed here? Ideally, I'd like to avoid having third-party firewall software constantly bringing up alerts and asking them to approve everything. Also, just to clarify, their use cases are just internet browsing and email.

  I'm on a office network and there are around 12 PCs that are connected to a switch and then to a Prolink Router. Now the Internet connection is very slow and I'm the one who manage all the computers. I want to monitor bandwidth usage of each computer on the LAN. how can I achieve this using my computer. I cannot install any software on the client computers other than mine. I tried wireshark but, it only shows my network usage so there is no use with the data I get from it. Is there any specific software that I can use within my PC to get the bandwidth details of other computers. I'm on a windows 7 x64bit PC with admin privileges. Thank you.

• How can I install a scanner by IP?

  I'm trying to install a scanner by IP the same way you would install a printer by IP. I don't want to install the horrible HP Solution Center software but I don't know how to install a network scanner without the software. I'm having a hard time googling this because when I search for things like "install network scanner" or "install scanner by IP" all the results are for things like Angry IP Scanner which is clearly different than what I'm trying to get.   Does anyone know of any software/hardware configuration that will allow you to preview/view the contents multiple monitors on one monitor? Let's pretend: I have two monitors hooked up to one pc, Monitor A and Monitor B. The monitors are not near each other. I'd like to be able to preview/see what's displaying on Monitor B on Monitor A I haven't been able to find much about this, but I imagine it may not currently be possible to access/emulate video output going out of a video port in software. However, wouldn't it be possible to capture display data generated by the OS kernel or data getting passed down to the display adapter driver?

  I got a bunch of C++ sources files and headers. They may use external libraries such as Boost e.g. I am interested in the process of building binaries for Windows and *nix. Makefiles (*nix) and .vcproj (Windows) call compilers with some specifications such as the order of compilation, compilation options and stuff. CMakeLists.txt can be used by CMake to build either makefiles or .vcproj and use very helpful commands such as recursive search of files, automatic linkage with known libraries, installers, variables that can be used in source files... Is there any existing tool that would generate a CMakeLists.txt from specified options ? Options could be like : scan this folder and make a library out of it, then scan this other folder and make an executable and automatically link both with Boost as well along with a user friendly installer with generated INSTALL.txt and README.txt. Something very powerful like that.

• If an entity is composed, is it still a god object?

  I am working on a system to configure hardware. Unfortunately, there is tons of variety in the hardware, which means there's a wide variety of capabilities and configurations depending on what specific hardware the software connects to. To deal with this, we're using a Component Based Entity design where the "hardware" class itself is a very thin container for components that are composed at runtime based on what capabilities/configuration are available. This works great, and the design itself has worked well elsewhere (particularly in games). The problem is that all this software does is configure the hardware. As such, almost all of the code is a component of the hardware instance. While the consumer only ever works against the strongly typed interfaces for the components, it could be argued that the class that represents an instance of the hardware is a God Object. If you want to do anything to/with the hardware, you query an interface and work with it. So, even if the components of an object are modular and decoupled well, is their container a God Object and the downsides associated with the anti-pattern?

  I have just installed Ubuntu for the first time ever. I have just installed it in a Dell Inspiron 1520 that came pre installed with Windows Vista and i currently run both of the OS (I just choose when the computer starts up). The wifi definitely works on the computer since i used it to download Ubuntu in the first place when I was using Vista. The Network Manager says that I only have a 'Wired' Network and it doesn't have any other options to choose from. I connected the Laptop into a wired connection and downloaded the 'Wicd Network Manager' but it had no effect either. From there I continued to go into 'Software Sources' and installed the wireless drive but that had no effect either. So... What can I do?

  What does a company need to offer you (apart from a fat pay cheque) for you to work for them? I am aware of this question, which is from an employer's perspective. I am interested in your views as employees. To get the discussion started, here is a list off the top of my head (not in any particular order): High-end computer with a huge screen or two. The best software tool money can buy as per Joel's test). That isn't too much to ask given many of the best tools are free (think git). Flexibility is a bonus- if a particular platform/ piece of software is not absolutely required, I would like to pick my OS and IDE. A quality chair Quiet workspace. Open plan is fine as long as there are meeting rooms so that there is no constant chatter going on around me. Spacious workspace. I would rather have more than three inches between my mouse and the person next to me's keyboard. Food and drink at work. Many companies these days have fruit baskets, biscuits, etc available to their employees, some even offer free lunch. Education. If my employer wants my skills to stay up-to-date, they should at the very least understand I need time to learn. If they want to pay for my books and conference registration fees, I am more than happy to accept. Other options include organizing internal knowledge exchange days or inviting speakers from outside.   First of all, the router I am using is a Cisco WRVS4400N. My company runs a software which handles the MySQL database of all of their products. The software now has an e-commerce module, so I have to set up a secure tunnel from our network to the server that will be hosting our e-commerce site so that when the database is updated, the site will also be updated. The technician completeing the job said there is an IP conflict, and has asked me to NAT 192.168.0.0/24 to 192.168.115.0/24. I am not really sure how to do this, and they want to charge $150 an hour to do it for me. Can anyone help?

I know Wikipedia lists a lot of cloning software. But I'm looking for a personal recommendation which you have used yourself, as I find it more credible (I'll see from the upvotes if the answer is liked by a lot of visitors).
