  • Samsung printer (ML-1640) margin problem

    I just got a new laser printer, Samsung ML-1640, and it has once again confirmed my experience that Samsung printers suck badly. The printer prints fine, except that the top margin is set at random, usually very small, cutting text on the top of page off. I tried updating firmware, getting new drivers, but nothing helped. I tried changing paper types, and it seemed that with the paper set as "plain" it was OK, but I just tried printing again after letting the printer rest for the night, and wasted 6 pages until I managed to print 2 boarding passes... Is there anything else I could try to resolve the issue?

  • Outlook 2010 keeps losing the search index for emails

    Hoping someone can help here, this is driving me insane. Outlook 2010 keeps losing the search index so when I search for an email it has the yellow bar saying: search results may be incomplete because items are still being indexed Clicking on the bar says eg: 49200 items remaining to be indexed If it makes any difference, this is an IMAP account. If I leave Outlook open all day it will eventually index everything. But then say a week/month later it happens all again.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS vs Ubuntu 14.04 LTS memory usage

    My droplet has 512 MB memory and is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bits and a Rails 4 application + several workers. It's running well. I tried to deploy the same thing on a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 bits droplet and I've got plenty of memory related problem (can't fork). Is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS using way more RAM than Ubuntu 12.04 LTS? Is there something I should know to lower memory usage ? Should I stick with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS?

  • Does Hotmail really offer two-factor authentication? [closed]

    I've read multiple news articles that claim Hotmail offers two-factor authentication. One of the articles describes Hotmail's system, saying ...whenever you go to Hotmail...you can choose to get a single-use code–a string of numbers that will be sent via text message to your phone–to use instead of your password. Is this an accurate description of Hotmail's system? If so, does Hotmail really offer two-factor authentication? If you can use either your password or a single-use code, it seems to me that it does not. Is this system really more secure than just having a password? Doesn't this just make an additional "key" available to a hacker? (I must be wrong here, I know the folks at Microsoft are much smarter than I am).

    All is perfect, 96 fps average. Until an item tries to enter a buildcraft pipe. Tekkit instantly crashes, no error dialog. I have no idea what logs to look at for information on the crash, or how to fix it.   • Which linux distributions offer seamless support for UEFI and an LVM root out of the box?

    My new ultrabook (an Asus UX32VD) requires UEFI in order to boot from the internal harddisk. I use an LVM partition which contains my root fs and dual-boot Windows 8. I somehow managed to get this working on Sabayon Linux, however the overall process was pretty painful, and system upgrades keep breaking my configuration because everything depends on a hand-configured kernel and a hand-crafted GRUB2 configuration. This causes a lot of hassle and distractions for me, so I am considering to switch to a different distribution. However, I cannot find any concrete resources that precisely document the state of UEFI support in the popular distributions. As an example, the length of the Ubuntu wiki page on UEFI suggests that installing on UEFI systems is a non-trivial process, and this AskUbuntu thread on encrypted LVM on UEFI systems suggests that LVM might also be a problem. I know that this question seems somewhat open-ended, so I'll formulate concrete questions: Are there any Linux distributions with an installer that supports installing to an LVM root in a UEFI boot setting where Windows 8 is dual-booted? Which distributions support UEFI without having to jump through hoops in order to bootstrap into a UEFI-booted system or requiring manual configuration of the boot manager?

  • avconv and ffmpeg - drawtext filter text_w evaluates as 0 in Ubuntu Precise

    I'm attempting to draw text onto a video using either the avconv or ffmpeg commands. When specifying x= for where on the final video to place the text, the 'text_w' value is evaluating to 0, rather than the width of the rendered text as it should. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 I've got avconv version 0.8.3-4:0.8.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 and ffmpeg version 0.8.3-4:0.8.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 Example command: avconv -i test.mov -vf "drawtext=fontfile='/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf':text='test text':x=text_w:y=50:fontsize=24:fontcolor=black" texted.mov This command causes the text to be printed as if x were set to 0.   • Will Parallel-port dongle work on USB-to-Parallel Adapter?

    We have a niche program running on a Win2K laptop that uses a security dongle connected to a parallel port for authentication. The laptop is getting creaky and I spent a frustrating night last night shopping various websites for a new laptop that had a parallel port. Seems I'm about three years late [G]. The question I have, is, if I buy a new(ish) laptop and use a USB-to-Parallel Port adapter, will the security dongle work? I know I'm not being specific about the app, but it's one most people wouldn't have heard of anyways. I've been guessing the answer to my question is no, since the app won't know to send a request out to the non-existent port. But, if the process actually is that the dongle sends a message INTO the computer every now and then, then it might work. And, I'm not sure whether the dongle is only needed at program startup time or randomly. The dongle is a 'permanent' addition to the old laptop. This is all about the money. We can have a newly-updated version of the program (which won't add any features we need) for the princely sum of $2700. Or we can spend $500 on a refurbed laptop still running WinXP, add a 30 buck adapter and keep the same solid, stolid performance we've come to appreciate. But it all comes down to the dongle behaviour. Oh, and a dock won't work. The whole laptop issue is about moving about the various nooks and crannies of the building with laptop in hand.   • Python version priority in OSX/UNIX PATH environment variable

    Hi all, I want my system to use /usr/bin/python, but it's currently using /opt/local/bin/python, which points to /usr/bin/python2.6. I tried modifying the PATH variable in my .bashrc as PATH=~/bin:$PATH ...and then set a symbolic link in ~/bin to point to /usr/bin/python. i.e. ~/bin/python --> /usr/bin/python I figured this might prioritize this symlink over the /opt/local version if it came before the other one in the PATH variable, but when I opened a new shell I still found python pointing to /opt/local/bin. Any advice on a good way to get the system to use /usr/bin/python? Also, I usually use ipython as opposed to python directly. I'm assuming that if the system starts to use the correct version of python then ipython would also use that version? If not, how could I also get ipython to use the correct version? Thanks!

  • Win 7 (SP1) Creationg of System Image failure... seems absurd. (0x80780119)

    This question seems to keep coming up in Microsoft Answers. Unfortunately, it never seems to be solved... on Microsoft Answers. Hopefully someone here will have a better idea. I'm trying to create a system image. It's not working. I have just re-installed windows as of a few hours ago. I have an admittedly older Western Digital 148 GB USB portable HDD which is not just completely empty, but I even did a long format with the NTFS file system just to be sure. The reinstallation of windows and a couple of programs take up 40 GB (seen below) When I try to create a System Image onto the USB HDD, I am told that there is not enough room. Obviously, this is wrong. The screen captures show exactly the steps that are happening to lead me to 0x80780119. I haven't done anything but put on Windows 7 (32bit; SP1) and install some programs. I haven't even done anything with them. There's almost zero in the way of data, and I checked that yes, the HDD works to accept data, send data and work with data. I've used the drive successfully for a long, long time. What's going wrong?

  • When gaming computer freezes with a blank screen and a buzzing sound

    I have a problem with random freezes when playing games. Sometimes it's fine for hours, other times it dosn't last even one. I tried googling around and I found recomendations to update my graphics drivers and to test for overheating. The graphics drivers haven't helped worked and Furmark created a consistant heat higher than I get during a crash. I even tried running a game using the Linux dual boot and WINE, that crashed too.   • OS X random, jumpy dragging behavior

    This problem has been going on since I got 10.7, and is persisting or even getting worse since I updated to Mavricks. The best way to describe it is thru an example- Let's say I'm working in Safari. Everything is working fine. Then, I'll switch to another app by clicking on it's window, for example, I'll click on Messages to shoot back a reply. When I click back to Safari, keyboard and mouse inputs don't work! The only way I can regain control of the app (Safari) is by clicking on the apps top bar, which then causes the app to jump left or right. If I'm in Messages and I switch back to Safari by clicking said top bar, it works fine. Same with switching back and forth using command-tab. I've narrowed the problem down to this - the first app (Safari, in this example) is, for some reason, deciding that I'm in the process of dragging the window around. This could be just an oddly persistent glitch in my system, but has anyone else seen this before? Perhaps a misplaced default write... somewhere along the line? Update A PRAM reset did absolutely nothing

  • How do I set the parental rating on a video?

    I can view the properties (right click, properties, details) of a video file and it has a field for parental rating. How can I add a rating to the file (the field is blank)? There is the problem that if I can add a rating, someone else may be able to change it to circumvent parental controls on a video player. This isn't of concern to me at this time. Edit: The file types are both .avi and .mpg. Edit 2: I own the file and have 'full control'.

    Scenario: I have a hard disk with a bootable sda1 partition and an Linux LVM. I seem to have corrupted the MBR? or Grub? not sure. I know it no longer boots and even with boot-repair and a Ubuntu live usb I was able to restore it. Following a "fix" with boot-repair I get "missing operating system" Can't i just reinstall grub or a new menu.lst?
