  • No programs or applications show up in dash

    There are no programs on the dash list (seacher on appmenu). Yesterday I logged into my account and I tried to find a particular program, but there weren't any! Additionally, I tried to view installed programs and manually find programs, but nothing was displayed. And today, when I wanted to turn on Ubuntu Software Center, it just don't turn on. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 (64bit). I installed this as a "fresh" OS a few days ago. Ubuntu is updated and has many Gigabytes of disk memory available.

  • Getting to math applications gradually

    I'm currently getting a formal degree related to computation, in particular my current focus is numerical programming, scientific computing and machine learning. I'd love to apply that knowledge in game dev and expand it with statistics, probability theory, and graph theory (probably even linear algebra). The question is: which spheres of gamedev are filled with such math stuff, is it possible to advance in those without being a part of a group of people and how to get to it gradually? P.S.: I've got experience with commercial java dev and am getting my hands on C/C++ at the moment, however, I'm opened to go ahead and try Unity3D and etc.

  • Styling Windows Phone Silverlight Applications

    If you have not developed with styles in Silverlight/XAML then it can be challenging and resources can be sparse depending on how deep you get.  One thing that you need to understand is what level you can apply styles and how much they can cascade.  What I am finding is that this doesn’t go to the level that we are used to in HTML and CSS. While styles can be defined at a page level if you want to share styles throughout your application they should be defined in the App.xaml file.  This is of course analogous to placing a style in your HTML file versus an external CSS file.  This is the type of style I will concentrate on in this post. The first thing to look it how styles associate to elements.  TargetType defines the object type that your style will apply to.  In the example below the style is targeting the TextBlock object type. <Style x:Key="TextBlockSmallGray" TargetType="TextBlock"> Next we use a Setter which allows you to apply values for specific attributes of the target object type.  The setters can be a simple value or complex.  The first example here is simply applying a color to the background property of the target. <Setter Property="Background" Value="White"/> The second setter example here is for the same property, but we are applying a the definition of a LinearGradientBrush. <Setter Property="Background"> <Setter.Value> <LinearGradientBrush> <GradientStop Offset="0" Color="Black"/> <GradientStop Offset="1" Color="White"/> </LinearGradientBrush> </Setter.Value> </Setter> The last thing I want to cover here is that you can leverage the system styles and then override or extend them.  The BasedOn attribute of the Style tag allows this sort of inheritance.  In the example below I am going to start with the PhoneTextTitleStyle and then override properties as needed. <Style x:Key="TextBlockTitle" BasedOn="{StaticResource PhoneTextTitle1Style}" TargetType="TextBlock"> So now that we have our styles defined applying it is fairly straight forward.  Add the style name as a static resource to the style property of the element in your page and off you go. <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Style="{StaticResource PageGridStyle}"> So this is one step in creating consistency in your application’s look.  In future posts I will dig a little deeper. del.icio.us Tags: windows phone 7,mobile development,windows phone 7 development,.NET,software development,design,UX

  • Hosting cross-domain Silverlight applications (XAP)

    In the Silverlight world, there are two types of cross-domain things that may leave some banging their head against a wall for a while. The first involves making network-based calls (WebClient, HttpWebRequest, etc) to services hosted on a domain other than the one that is the site of origin for the XAP.     In this blog I will explain how to create a custom KFF.I am using XXCUST_KFF_DEMO table to capture the KFF code combinations. Following steps needs to perform. 1) Register the XXCUST_KFF_DEMO table.Click here to see the code. Verify the table has created successfully. Navigation: Application Developer > Application > Database > Table 2) Register the Key Flexfield. Navigation : Application Developer > Flexfield > Key Flexfields 3) Define the structure and segments.  Navigation:  Application Developer > Flexfield > Key Flexfield Segments Click on Segments button. Save the created Information.Check the Allow Dynamic Inserts check box if you want to create the combination from the KFF display window. Once you complete all the changes check the Freeze Flexfield Definition check box. 4) Create a sequence XXCUST_KFF_DEMO_S. 5) Try to create KFF item through OAF or Forms.     I am new to Ubuntu development. As a learning experience, I have written a custom chat application using qt4 and I want to deploy it in some sort of setup file. Whats the easiest way of deploying an application viz a viz setting desktop icons. automatically requesting for administrator privileges to execute. inserting an entry into the startup menu. automatically compress my application and reduce download size. automatic startup for my application without user intervention I am familiar with using NSIS scripts on Windows, but I don't know where to begin on Ubuntu. I would preffer a solution similar to NSIS scripts.

  • Can't load any applications

    After installing Eclipse, I wanted to try to enable the global unity menu for Eclipse. Following a guide on the web, I was to make a change to: sudo nano /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/libappmenu.so by changing Eclipse to Xclipse. After making that change, and then running sudo ldconfig. and even restarting, I can no longer open any application. I just see the application appear on the screen for a split second and then it disappears. So far I have noticed that I can no longer load Eclipse and Chrome. Anyone know how to fix this? I have tried changing Xclipse back to Eclipse and running the command sudo ldconfig, but it makes no difference.

  • Standards & compliances for secure web application development?

    I am working with developers right now that write code the way they want and when i tell them to do it other way they respond that its just matter of preference how to do it and they have their way and i have mine. I am not talking about the formatting of code, but rather of way site is organized in classes and the way the utilize them. and the way they create functions and process forms etc. Their coding does not match my standards, but again they argue that its matter of preference and as long as goal achieved the can be different way's to do it. I agree but their way is proven to have bugs and we spend a lot of time going back and forth with them to fix all problems security or functionality, yet they still write same code no matter how many times i asked them to stop doing certain things. Now i am ready to dismiss them but friend of mine told me that he has same exact problem with freelance developers he work with. So i don't want to trade one bad apple for another. Question is is there some world wide (or at least europe and usa) accepted standard or compliance on how write secure web based applications. What application architecture should be for maintainable application. Is there are some general standard that can be used for any language ruby php or java govern security and functionality and quality of code? Or at least for PHP and MySQL i use for my website. So i can make them follow this strict standard and stop making excuses.

    EDIT: I don't think this is a duplicate... I ask for a specific feature, which is Facebook integration. I know this question existed, but I need something more specific than that. That one doesn't outline what I need. What is the best/most compatible forum software which features almost complete integration with Facebook? The main feature I ask is the Facebook Connect feature (user could use Facebook account to register). But it would be more perfect if other Facebook features could be integrated to. Something like, subscribe thread which appears to Facebook notifications, easy sharing to Facebook, etc. I have vBulletin, Invision Power Board, and SMF in my mind, but I'm open to more suggestions..

    We have customers calling in to place orders. What sort of considerations should I make when building a call center application. Speed is a factor here. We had a powerbuilder application that was extremly fast for a trained user. We want to have the same sort of speed in our new production system. So some thoughts I've made are: Hotkeys are important. Is it faster to use a "wizard", step by step, or should I try to place everything important about the order logically on one sceen and have another screen where you do all searches, pertinent for that order?
