  Will a bacula volume be recycled if: No more volumes are appendable The date of the last job on it is past the volume retention period Jobs on that volume are not past the job and file retention periods This is the way the manual reads to me, but I saw a post saying all retention periods have to be up before a volume is recycled (which does make less sense to me). Anyone know for sure from experience?

• Laptop automatic shutdown after 2 seconds

  I'm trying to insvestigate which component produces this behavior. Other indications show it may be the GPU but I wonder if anyone knows more. It's a Toshiba Satellite X200 description: AC power shows the power being fed normally, when turned on the fan works and it appears to be starting up but after 2 seconds it shuts down with only the 'AC power connected" led on. -- seconds are about up to 4,maybe not 2 exactly.

• Same album repeatedly updates when syncing iTunes with iPhone

  I have many many albums and tracks purchased via the iTunes store both through iTunes directly and via the iPhone. They all synchronise properly and are on iTunes eventually (i.e. if purcashed originally on the iPhone). There's one album, though, purchased via the iTunes app in June this year. Virtually every time I sync the iPhone it says "updating files" and this album gets updated. The rest of the sync goes just fine, new tracks added, listened to podcasts are removed, playlists are updated (notwithstanding that smart playlists' orderings are now utterly broken) fine - but this album is always getting updated. In finder I've looked at the permissions and nothing seems unusual. FWIW, I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.8, iPhone 3.1.2, iTunes 9.02. Anyone with any ideas? It's not a fundamental problem, but it does means that each sync takes an extra 30-60 seconds, which is annoying!

  Is it possible to update WXP using a batch script? Basically, I would like to run a batch script, which installs all important updates in the background accepting any dialog boxes which need user interaction. EDIT 1: I know I can enable the "Automatically download and install" option to do this, but I have about 100 computers to do, so it would be nice if it can be done via a batch file. That way, I can use the software we already have to run a batch file on all computers with a single click.

  I am running linux based server (centos 6.0) with cpanle and WHM, I have critical website running with a chat server which uses a openfire as the chat server backend server, i have monitored last few weeks this service crashes quite often, i have no way of knowing that, and i have to wait till the next day to restart the server. (and this can only be fixed by using server reboot as its got to do with some java memory problem) is there a way i can setup a monitoring service to the server and if this service goes down server itself will reboot ? is this something possible or is there a better way to overcome this problem ?

  I have some data in an excel file from which I have to generate a report. I repeat this task fairly regularly and am looking to automate it. I have a LaTeX project into which I usually just copy data by hand, export the necessary worksheets as pdfs and add them to my LaTeX project and compile with pdflatex. It has occured to me that there must be a way to automate this process. Is there an efficient way to export the data from excel and into a LaTeX project, possibly a vba script in excel could run the process? Also, it doesn't have to be LaTeX, I'm not all that experienced with MS office's more advanced features is there some way akin to a mail merge that I could achieve this with? In some ways this might be better in case I have to pass the work on to someone who doesn't know LaTeX. Thanks.

To explain it a bit more in details: There is a company that has multiple computers (think in 100/1000's) and they all are missing the same system32 files since the company's software removed it. The systems are distributed all over the world and are managed by "normal" people who don't have any knowledge about computers. I want to create a usb stick that i can mail to all those people which contains a script that executes when you boot the usb. this script should replace the missing system32 files without any user input is this possible, and if so how could i manage this?

• Send command through PuTTY automatic login

  I am using the following to login automatically to a remote server and then run commands listed in a commands.txt, like this: C:\path to\putty.exe -ssh adreese.ip -l user -pw Password -m C:\Path to\command.txt commands.txt contains the following: wakeonlan -i broadcast adress Macadress However, when I try to do so a new window for PuTTY appears, but it closes and exits instantly after login. As a result, I cannot see the output of the command(s). After a several tests, it appears that the command is not execute , cause my computer doesn't "wake on lan". I don't understand what's going on here ? I cannot use the plink.exe program cause I cannot make connection with public key ( too much distant site for doing all the registration keys in putty ) Can someone help me with this ? Or can i use another program to make ssh connection and send command with script from a windows os? Edit : I also try to make a bash file in the distant server with the same command and execute it from the session like this : C:\path to\putty.exe -ssh adreese.ip -l user -pw Password \home\user\script.sh Ihave the same problem... Need help please : /

What I'm looking for is true continuous backup software, i.e. software that can transparently back up files immediately before they are written to, so that I can be certain I have all the versions of a file that ever existed.   I'm not very knowledgeable about wifi, but I understand the notion of Adhoc networks (Wifi without a router), so... Is there a standard (or widely implemented) way of letting a device "momentarily" negotiate a wifi connection (Adhoc network or otherwise) directly to another device, transfer some data, and then quit, all without any user intervention on either device? For example, let's say I have a PC and an ereader in the same room and there's no nearby wifi router for either of these devices to connect to. I want to send a file from PC to ereader but I don't want to do the work of setting up network, selecting an SSID, or entering passwords. Is that possible?

  We write test case documents. In these documents, each test case is numbered. E.g. Foobar-UI-1 to Foobar-UI-23 or Foobar-Device-1 to Foobar-Device-87 I'd like to autonumber these. I don't think I want just a new numbered list format, I want something like the list of figures - where figures (or test case) can be defined anywhere in the doc with other headings and paragraphs between them, and I can insert a "List of figures" table at the beginning. So how do I do "test cases" and a "list of test-cases" table in the same way as figures work out of the box?

Adobe seems to be pushing Google's Chrome and Java with the Ask.com Toolbar. I admit that it could be much worse because both instance simply require an uncheck during some point of the update process, but on a large scale, prevention is better than confrontation.   I have a domain in my HOSTS file; www.mytestbusiness.com However, I want to convert some folders into subdomains automatically, e.g. www.mytestbusiness.com/birmingham www.mytestbusiness.com/london which should be: www.birmingham.mytestbusiness.com www.london.mytestbusiness.com Only for some folders do I want to keep it as a domain/folder link, e.g. www.mytestbusiness.com/styles/ I don't want the CSS folder becoming a subdomain, or certain folders like cgi-bin, dwoo etc. (dwoo contains the site templates!) I am running Apache 2.2 on Windows 7 Home Edition, and the site has no issues, it's just creating subdomains in .htaccess without having to manually declare them which is the problem. What's the best way to do this, other than manually declaring them in httpd-vhosts.conf as I used to do? Thanks

  Does anyone know of a free utility that allows you to paste into it a graphics file (any type would work for me, jpg, bmp, png, etc) and it will size the file to within a preset size boundary? For instance, if I preset it to resize files to be a maximum of 400 wide by 300 tall, and I paste in a file 500x500, it would shrink the file to fit within the 300 tall limit. Thanks.

  I work for a company that uses Windows 7 for end user computing. The Windows 7 computers are updated via a WSUS installation, and access to Microsoft Update is blocked. We have a problem with a number of websites, who's certificates appears to be invalid, though they are perfectly ok. The problem is, that Windows 7 apparently does an on-demand update of root certificates through Windows Update, rather than rolling out a monthly update, as with Windows XP. Now that Windows Update is blocked, how should root certificates be updated? It appears that WSUS is not handling this feature. Thanks in advance.

• Automatic profile load on boot

  Is there any way to configure a computer to login automatically at bootup and then IMMEDIATELY switch users? The purpose is to trigger the profile loading process for the assumed user so that when they go to login, their profile loads instantaneously. Yet, the immediate user switch means that the login password is still required before any actual use. A few of the attempts I have made require storing the password in plain-text for the system to use. Needless to say that is undesireable. I have been looking for this solution for years; if anyone knows of a better solution to skinning this cat I am all ears. EDIT: tsdiscon command will Lock the workstation.
