  • 14.04 default locales

    After a new install of 14.04 I have quite a few extra locales/languages. Is this normal? I installed using English (GB) I think since en_AU isn't an option. At some point apt offered a list of unused files which I removed.   • Boot Failure: No default or UI configuration directive found Normal install on laptop [closed]

    I have had Ubuntu on my laptop for quite a while, it's just a standard install, no partitioning off, no wierdness of any other sort, just ubuntu. Today my computer started to lag really bad so I tried to restart it, but after bios loaded I just got an error that said "ERROR: No configuration file found No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!" After that it had "boot:" and a cursor, like it expects me to type something. Once again, this is just a normal install on my hard drive, not a VM or booting from USB. It's Ubuntu 12.04 on a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ240P Any help is appreciated!

  • How to change the default desktop environment?

    I wanted to try out different desktop environments so I installed XFCE, KDE, GNOME, etc on top of Unity in Ubuntu 12.04 After a while I decided that I didn't like those other DEs and would stick to Unity. So I changed my default DE to Unity by configuring gdm. > sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm Now I am able to choose my DE at login time and all of DEs are working properly. But the strange thing is that my boot up screen says 'lubuntu', my login screen is KDE, and my desktop is Unity. How and why is this happening? Why didn't my gdm configuration have any effect? Does login and boot up screen need to be configured separately from the DE? There are other similar questions here but they are not the same as this one. I do not want to remove the other enviroments I'm quite happy with having a list of DEs to select from. I want to know how to set proper defaults.

  • default mount point changed for external HD

    The default mount point for my external HD changed when upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10. Now the username is added as an extra level before the hd label. So it used to be /media/nameofhd and now it became /media/username/nameofhd This breaks a lot of links I have set up to this disk. I know that I can mount it manually and even automatically through /etc/fstab. What I want to know is why this behaviour changed and how I can change it back to the original? blkid and fdisk don't show anything suspicious. thx!

I have being searching online for a long time, most of the answers are like delete ~/.gnome2/keyring XX , but I don't have such directory or go to password and keys , disable some option, but this window is empty in my case, very strange , even I add a new password keyring, it is still empty.   • Which DNS settings are used when setting up server

    I have a server and want to run my own name server service. Now I have set it up already and it works not, but I do not know where the exact settings are stored. On my server I use Plesk. When I edit DNS settings there I think it is stored in named.conf. Named is installed on the server, and BIND. Now I also have a panel from my registrar. This is separate from my server. Both places I can add the normal MX,A,CNAME, etc records. Now where is the best way to place this settings. Currently I have the same records on both places, on the server and at the registrar panel. I am correct to just add all the records at the registrar panel, and remove everything from within PLESK, and just don't run DNS on my server, because it is already done in the registrar panel. Or should I add the records in both places.

    I created a custom Ubuntu 11.10 amd64 desktop based distro using remastersys, but whenever I try to boot using the iso file in vmware, it shows this error : no ui or default configuration found I've tried changing the name of isolinux to syslinux but that didnt help me either! I also tried using unetbootin but it also doesnt boot, and tried every possible but to no avail. There is a similar question but it is about 10.10 and 32 bit, but that didnt solve my query and also as this is a custom distro, the solution could be different. I've also tried creating images using remastersys again and again but that wont help either. Please help me its very urgent!

    I am looking to install mediawiki on a production server (after doing a test on a development one). I could not really understand why the default location for the mediawiki files is /var/lib/mediawiki. I would have thought /var/www would've made more sense. I did some research and in http://people.canonical.com/~cjwatson/ubuntu-policy/policy.html/ch-customized-programs.html#s-web-appl it says the following Web Document Root Web Applications should try to avoid storing files in the Web Document Root. Instead they should use the /usr/share/doc/package directory for documents and register the Web Application via the doc-base package. If access to the web document root is unavoidable then use /var/www Can anyone explain why this is please?

  • Outlook 2010 - HTML Images not downloaded - at all - by default

    Maybe it's just me but I found this "Security Feature" of Office 2010 a bit annyoing out of the box.  Outlook does not download any pictures by default for HTML emails.  Now this is nothing new, but what is different is that Outlook 2010 has added another layer of security around the pictures.  You now have the option to finely tune when things are downloaded.  The side affect is that nothing is downloaded at all.  And when I would click on "Download Images" on an email, it still would not show the images.  I found that I had to explicitly tell Outlook to download HTML images and then restart Windows.  It did not work if I simply restarted Office.  Again, maybe this was just me.  Here's what you need to do in Outlook 2010 to enable images for HTML: Click on the new "File" tab Click on "Options" Click on "Trust Center" Clicn on "Trust Center Settings" Uncheck the "Don't download pictures automatically in HTML e-mail messages or RSS items" check box Click the "Okay" button Exit Outlook 2010 Again, for me I had to restart Windows (Windows 7 64bit, Office 2010 64bit) to get this to "take affect".

    I am writing a library that generates derived classes of abstract classes dynamically at runtime. The constructor of the derived class needs a MethodInfo of the base class constructor so that it can invoke it. However, for some reason Type.GetConstructor() returns null. For example: abstract class Test { public abstract void F(); } public static void Main(string[] args) { ConstructorInfo constructor = typeof(Test).GetConstructor( BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Public, null, System.Type.EmptyTypes, null); // returns null! } Note that GetConstructor returns null even if I explicitly declare a constructor in Test, and even if Test is not abstract.

    Here's an example. Suppose we are trying to calculate a service charge. Say sales in the USA attract a 10 dollar charge, sales in the UK attract a 20 dollar charge So far it's easy - we are starting to imagine a table that lists charges by country. Now lets assume that Alaska and Hawaii are treated as special cases they are both 15 dollars That suggests a table with states, Alaska and Hawaii are charged at 15, but presumably we need 48 (redundant) rows all saying 10. This gives us a maintainance problem, our user only wants to type 10 once NOT 48 times. It does not sit well with the UK either. The UK does not have states. Suppose we throw in another couple of cross cutting rules. If you order by phone there is a 10% supplement on the charge. If you order via the web there is a 10% discount. But for some reason best known to the owners of the business the web/phone supplement/discount are not applied in Hawaii. It seems to me that this is quite a common kind of problem and there is probably a well known arrangement of tables to store the data. Most cases get handled by broad brush answers, but there are some very detailed low level variations that give rise to a huge number of theoretical combinations, most of which are not used.

    I'm setting up an autoinst.xml file for auto-installing SLES 11. I get prompted for the various interface settings per below, but they don't seem to stick once the server reboots. I don't think I have the xml defined correctly. As an alternative, is there a way to stop the autoinstall at the section where you configure the network devices so that the user can take over? I was able to show the partition proposal, but not sure how to do the same with the networking setup.

  • APC PHP cache size does not exceed 32MB, even though settings allow for more

    I am setting up APC (v 3.1.9) on a high-traffic WordPress installation on CentOS 6.0 64 bit. I have figured out many of the quirks with APC, but something is still not quite right. No matter what settings I change, APC never actually caches more than 32MB. I'm trying to bump it up to 256 MB. 32MB is a default amount for apc.shm_size, so I am wondering if it's stuck there somehow. I have run the following echo '2147483648' > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax to increase my system's shared memory to 2G (half of my 4G box). Then ran ipcs -lm which returns ------ Shared Memory Limits -------- max number of segments = 4096 max seg size (kbytes) = 2097152 max total shared memory (kbytes) = 8388608 min seg size (bytes) = 1 Also made a change in /etc/sysctl.conf then ran sysctl -p to make the settings stick on the server. Rebooted, too, for good measure. See image http://i.stack.imgur.com/2bwMa.png You can see that the cache is trying to allocate 256MB, but the brown piece of the pie keeps getting recycled at 32MB. This is confirmed as refreshing the apc.php page shows cached file counts that move up and down (implying that the cache is not holding onto all of its files). Does anyone have an idea of how to get APC to use more than 32 MB for its cache size?? **Note that the identical behavior occurs for eaccelerator, xcache, and APC.     I created my own keyboard layout and loaded it with xmodmap .Xmodmap. Now I want to go back to a default layout, but after a reboot the layout defined with xmodmap are still present. What files is modifying xmodmap? By the way, I'm using Arch Linux, and I just want to have again the layout defined in /etc/vconsole.conf (which is the default place to define your keyboard layout with systemd, according to the Arch Wiki).

    Possible Duplicate: Visual Studio opens default browser instead of IE I want to change the default browser used by Visual Studio for debugging. Normally the route I'd take to do this is right clicking on an .aspx file and setting the default from the 'browse with' dialog. Unfortunately, MVC views don't have the browse with option. What other ways can you set the default browser? EDIT: FireFox is set to my default browser in Windows, but VS still opens up IE.

    When you add a service reference it creates the class "MyServiceClient" with a default constructor. If I use new MyServiceClient() I get an error: Could not find default endpoint... If I use new MyServiceClient("endpointName") it works. I would like to specify a default endpoint in app/web.config which will get used when I use the default constructor. I know I can place that default name in *.settings which ends up in app.config, but just wondering if there is any built-in way to do it.

    The hosts file in Windows contains mappings of IP addresses to host names, like an address book for your computer. Your PC uses IP addresses to find websites, so it needs to translate the host names into IP addresses to access websites. When you enter a host name in a browser to visit a website, that host name is looked up in DNS servers to find the IP address. If you enter IP addresses and host names for websites you visit often, these websites will load faster, because the hosts file is loaded into memory when Windows start and overrides DNS server queries, creating a shortcut to the sites. Because the hosts file is checked first, you can also use it to block websites from tracking your activities on the internet, as well as block ads, banners, third-party cookies, and other intrusive elements on webpages. Your computer has its own host address, known as its “localhost” address. The IP address for localhost is 127.0.0.1. To block sites and website elements, you can enter the host name for the unwanted site in the hosts file and associate it with the localhost address. Blocking ads and other undesirable webpage elements, can also speed up the loading of websites. You don’t have to wait for all those items to load. The default hosts file that comes with Windows does not contain any host name/IP address mappings. You can add mappings manually, such as the IP address 74.125.224.72 for www.google.com. As an example of blocking an ad server website, you can enter the following line in your hosts file to block doubleclick.net from serving you ads.
