• Windows explorer locks files

  I'm using Office 2010 & Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. My problem starts when I attempt to save e-mail messages to my PC that I have received via Outlook (my ISP is Comcast). I'm using the default .msg file extension option when I attempt to save these e-mails. The resultant files are locked and do not show the normal "envelope" icon. Instead, it’s a “blank page” icon with the right upper corner folded in. These files refuse to open either by double clicking on them or right clicking and trying to open them with Outlook. And when I return to Outlook, I discover that Outlook is now hung up and I have to close it via the Task Manager. To make matters worse, I’ve also discovered that every e-mail message that I've saved on my PC over the years has also somehow become locked and their original "envelope" icon has been replaced with the "blank page" icon. I found and installed an application called LockHunter. As a result, when I right click on a saved and locked e-mail message, I’ve given an option to find out what's locking it. Each time I'm told that the culprit is Windows explorer.exe. When I unlock the file the normal envelope icon is sometimes displayed (but not always) but at least the file can then be opened. But the file is still “squirrely” as it can’t be moved or saved to a folder until it’s unlocked again. On this second attempt, LockHunter says it’s now locked by Outlook.exe. By the way, I don't have this issue when I save Word, Excel & PowerPoint files; only with Outlook. I've exhausted every remedy that I can think of including: making sure that the file and folder options are checked to always show icons and not thumbnails; running the Windows 7 & Office 2010 repair options which find nothing amiss; running a complete system scan with Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool with negative results; verifying that Outlook is the default for opening e-mails; updating all of my applications via Secunia Personal Software Inspector; uninstalling every application that I felt was unnecessary; doing a registry cleanup via CC Cleaner; having Windows Security Essentials always on (it did find one Java Trojan recently which was quarantined and then deleted); uninstalling a bunch of non-Microsoft shell extensions; and deactivating all of the Outlook Add-ins and then re-activating each one. None of this solves the problem. I’d welcome any advice on how to resolve this.

• Thunderbird 3: can't change column width?

  I recently installed Thunderbird 3.0.3. Just noticed a suboptimal UI setting: in the upper pane, which lists the e-mails in the current folder, the Date column is about 200px wide. So when I keep the window at 480x600, all I see in a row is: | tree icon | favourites icon | attachment icon | read icon | junk icon | Date and time, followed by 5cm whitespace | ... | P Where "P" is the first letter of the name of the sender. And the "..." is actually shown this way, I have no idea which column it is meant to be. But I don't see neither the sender, nor the message subject, which makes scrolling a folder for a certain mail rather pointless. I see these when I maximize the window, actually the columns are then not only bigger, they are arranged in another sequence. But I feel that holding a mail client permanently maximised at 1600x1200 is a waste of screen real estate. My naive solution attempt was to try to go with the mouse cursor to the right edge of the date column and try to shrink it by moving the cursor left while holding down the left mouse button. Not only is this default behaviour for all resizable columns I've ever encountered in GUIs, the cursor actually turns into a horizontal double-headed arrow. But pulling has no effect at all. I cannot make a wide column narrow, and I cannot make the narrow columns wide. I didn't find anything in the preferences either. So can please somebody explain how to get the columns arranged sensibly? Edit: I found out that I only have the problem when I drag the Thunderbird window to a GridMove screen area. It gets automatically resized, but doesn't notice the resize event or something, so the column width remains the same as under a maximized window. First making the window narrow using the mouse helps with column width, but the width of the mail pane is still too wide (rows don't reflow). Anyway, this seems to be a bug caused by the combination of the two applications and not a configuration problem, so I guess I'll have to live with it.

• Disable Opera Thumbnail Previews on Windows 7 Taskbar

  If you are one of the people who does not care for the Taskbar Thumbnail Previews in Windows 7 then we have a quick and easy way for you to turn them off in Opera Browser. Before Here is our Opera Browser with four tabs full of HTG Network goodness… Hovering the mouse over the Taskbar Icon gives a nice preview of each tabs content. Looking closer you can see the fanned edge on the Taskbar Icon indicating that there are multiple tabs open. This is all good but what if you just want something simpler? Disabling the Previews If you want to disable the Taskbar Thumbnail Previews in Opera you will need to type opera:config in the Address Bar and press Enter. Once you have done that, you will see a condensed listing for all of Opera’s preferences. There is one Preference Category that we need to look for…User Prefs. Note: While a Quick Find Search could be conducted for the entry that needs to be modified, we have chosen to show the full method here. After scrolling down and finding the User Prefs category you will need to expand the section. Notice the size of the scrollbar in comparison with the screenshot above…there is quite a lot that you can look at and finesse in Opera if desired. Scroll down until you find the Use Windows 7 Taskbar Thumbnails entry. Uncheck the box but do not close the opera:config Tab yet…or your changes will not take effect. Scroll down once more until you reach the end of the User Prefs category and click Save. With this particular modification you will need to restart Opera after clicking OK. After restarting Opera the Taskbar Icon and Taskbar Thumbnail Preview will revert to the minimal Windows 7 default as shown here. You can see Opera’s Tab Bar in the thumbnail and the Taskbar Icon no longer has a “fanned edge”. Conclusion If you want to disable Opera’s Taskbar Thumbnail Previews on your Windows 7 system, then this quick modification will help get it sorted out in just a few moments. • Pinning Projects and Solutions with Visual Studio 2010

  This is the twenty-fourth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the VS 2010 and .NET 4 release. Today’s blog post covers a very small, but still useful, feature of VS 2010 – the ability to “pin” projects and solutions to both the Windows 7 taskbar as well VS 2010 Start Page.  This makes it easier to quickly find and open projects in the IDE. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] VS 2010 Jump List on Windows 7 Taskbar Windows 7 added support for customizing the taskbar at the bottom of your screen.  You can “pin” and re-arrange your application icons on it however you want. Most developers using Visual Studio 2010 on Windows 7 probably already know that they can “pin” the Visual Studio icon to the Windows 7 taskbar – making it always present.  What you might not yet have discovered, though, is that Visual Studio 2010 also exposes a Taskbar “jump list” that you can use to quickly find and load your most recently used projects as well. To activate this, simply right-click on the VS 2010 icon in the task bar and you’ll see a list of your most recent projects.  Clicking one will load it within Visual Studio 2010: Pinning Projects on the VS 2010 Jump List with Windows 7 One nice feature also supported by VS 2010 is the ability to optionally “pin” projects to the jump-list as well – which makes them always listed at the top.  To enable this, simply hover over the project you want to pin and then click the “pin” icon that appears on the right of it: When you click the pin the project will be added to a new “Pinned” list at the top of the jumplist: This enables you to always display your own list of projects at the top of the list.  You can optionally click and drag them to display in any order you want. VS 2010 Start Page and Project Pinning VS 2010 has a new “start page” that displays by default each time you launch a new instance of Visual Studio.  In addition to displaying learning and help resources, it also includes a “Recent Projects” section that you can use to quickly load previous projects that you have recently worked on: The “Recent Projects” section of the start page also supports the concept of “pinning” a link to projects you want to always keep in the list – regardless of how recently they’ve been accessed. To “pin” a project to the list you simply select the “pin” icon that appears when you hover over an item within the list: Once you’ve pinned a project to the start page list it will always show up in it (at least until you “unpin” it). Summary This project pinning support is a small but nice usability improvement with VS 2010 and can make it easier to quickly find and load projects/solutions.  If you work with a lot of projects at the same time it offers a nice shortcut to load them.   Ubuntu 14.04 64bit on Dell E6420 (Sandybridge graphics) Open Unity Dash search My filters are set only on "Applications" and "Files & Folders" I type : Software The results are good but some icons appear as blank page icons (document?) Example Applications : "Ubuntu Software Centre" and "Software & Updates" "Software Updater" has the correct application icon. (The blank page icon look like a blank page with the top right corner folded.)

• Disable Facebook plug-in on default Firefox

  This may a Firefox question rather than Ubuntu but since the plug-in seem to be integrated with the Ubuntu status bar so I think I should try my luck here. Just update to Firefox 17 and not sure why now when I go to Facebook a icon show in launcher and a entry for Facebook at the top-right conner under the message icon. How can I disable this plug-in? • SPSS launcher for Unity

  I have "SPSS 20 for Linux" statistical analysis program installed under /opt/IBM directory. I can run it via terminal entering the command line with /opt/IBM, and it runs without any problems. When the program window opens, I go to the launcher and right-click on its icon to lock it there, but after closing it, the icon becomes useless. When I click on it, nothing happens. I tried to ceate a launcher for it, but there is no use again.

• Gnome Shell Thunderbird Mail Notification

  Does anyone know of a way to get persistent Gnome 3 panel notifications in Gnome 3 in Oneiric? It's one of the few things holding me back from using Gnome 3 regularly. I've actually found a way of moving the notifications from the (usually) hidden bottom bar to the top, but it does not move the Thunderbird icon. The icon also only tends to appear the first time mail is received. I'm very surprised this basic piece of functionality doesn't exist for Gnome Shell.

• Monitor the Weather from Your Windows 7 Taskbar

  Keeping up with the weather forecast can be hard when you are extra busy with work. If you need a simple but nice looking way to integrate weather monitoring into your Taskbar then join us as we look at WeatherBar. Setting Up & Using WeatherBar To get started unzip the following files, place them in an appropriate “Program Files Folder”, and create a shortcut. When you start WeatherBar for the first time you will be presented with the following window and a random/default location. To get WeatherBar set up for your location there are only two settings to adjust (using the “Pencil & Gear Buttons”). Clicking on the “Pencil Button” will open up this small window…enter the name of your location and click “OK”. Next click on the “Gear Button” where you can choose the “Update Interval” and “Measurement Format” that best suits your needs. Click “OK” when finished and WeatherBar will be ready to go. That definitely looks nice. When you are finished viewing this window minimize it to the “Taskbar Icon” instead of clicking on the “Close Button”…otherwise the entire app will close. Left click on the “Taskbar Icon” to bring the window back up… Hovering the mouse over the “Taskbar Icon” provides a nice thumbnail of the weather forecast. Right clicking on the “Taskbar Icon” will display a nice mini forecast. Conclusion While WeatherBar may not be for everyone it does provide a nice easy way to monitor the weather from your “Taskbar” without taking up a lot of room.   I'm working on a project that uses some icons that are under a Creative Commons license (ND) that forbids modification of the picture. What can I do with this icons as a programmer? Can I modify the looks of the image in the program as long as I don't change anything in the file that contains the icon? Have I modified the image if I put a colored transparent layer over it so the color of the icon changes?

• Don't show gwibber messages in indicator applet

  Gwibber turns the indicator-applet-icon blue, each time a new tweet appears in my timeline, which is always. It is therefore no longer usefull as a "there is a new message for you" resulting in many missed jabber/gtalk chats, finding emails half an hour late and so on. How can I mute Gwibber in there? Preferably so it only turns the new-message-icon blue on new replies and private messages in Gwibber. But certainly not on any update.

I am from Denmark, and use the supported Danish keyboard-layout (and chose it as default in the install), but whenever i reboot Ubuntu switches back to English keyboard-layout, though the little icon in the panel says it's in Danish. I have to click on the icon every time to change it back to Danish. I tried removing the English keyboard-layout, but it didn't help. Any suggestions?

  Right-click in the main panel allows to change icons associated to files of directories, and this is cool for content organization and so on. Unfortunately, right click on small directories on the side pane does not allow to change its properties (such as icon). I try to change the original directory icon, expecting that its side pane version would change accordingly, but surprisingly, nothing appends... Any idea?

• Is it possible to add a notification message when a VPN gets connected?

• Launcher tooltip display issues

  I've just installed Ubuntu 12.04.1, and it seems that i have some issues with the launcher: if i hover the mouse on an icon, it shows an horizontal line instead of the icon's name. if i hover it again, then it will show me the correctly displayed name, in label and all. The thing is pretty annoying. First hover no label (just that line), second hover, label. Video drivers are installed ! Any thoughts? Thank you

• Dash home button in unity5 of new ubuntu 12.04lts

  If I click on the dash home icon nothings come up. It's as if it's not responding, but just above the dash home icon, I can see close, minimize and restore buttons. I have tried all the links present in this forum, so please don't suggest these: sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity unity --reset pkill -f unity-applications-daemon None of those worked. I am facing this problem after upgrading to 12.04 LTS.

• How can I get my battery level to display in the notification area (system tray)?

• Can't Drag & Drop text to unity launcher (e.g. url's, highlighted text)

  I'm trying to create a unity launcher icon (.dekstop file) on which you can drop any (selected/highlighted) text from a web browser, google chrome in my case. I know you can use the "MimeType=" key in a .desktop file, but I can't find the right mime type for my scenario. I've tried several text MimeTypes and "text/*", but none of them would work. Does anyone know which MimeType I have to use in order for my launcher icon to accept text when hovering over it?

  Possible Duplicate: Disable joining multiple windows to one icon in unity panel If I have two vlc players open, I have to go to the sidebar and click on the vlc icon, then pick which one I want (it does this cool effect where it shows you both windows side by side-- as great as that is, it gets bloody annoying after a while). Is there not an easier way of doing this? Is there no possibility of reverting back to the old system?

• corrupted, hidden, wireless network adapter from "Network Connections" in Windows 7

  The issue is that when I install a wireless network adapter on my Windows 7 Professional machine I have no connectivity, the system tray icon has a red X. First, I tried the obvious, install updated drivers from the manufacturer. When I did this, the Network Connections icon had gray bars and there was no connectivity. So I tried installling the network adapter on a different computer on the same network and I verified that it does work with no issues. Next, I ran scan disk with no issues. Next, I ran sfc as admin with no issues. At this point I turned to the router and turned SSID broadcast on but that didn't help. I turned MAC address filtering off at the router but that didn't help. Whenever I installed the original network adapter (a wireless N usb adapter with WPA2 TKIP+AES) it showed up as "Wireless Network Connection 2" with a grayed out icon and no connectivity. Lastly, I tried installing two different "verified working" usb wireless adapters on to the Windows 7 Pro machine. The results were the same "Wireless Network Connection 2" that had a green bar icon but no connectivity. I installed the manufacturers software and it indicated the NIC was not there even thought the driver installed successfully in Device Manager. I guess I should mention, I first tried (insanely in vain) to use the (worthless) Windows Network troubleshooter. The results were....drumroll please... There is a problem with the network adapter... well No Duh! Also, during all of this the network adapter is always showing as "Working Properly" in the properties dialogue of Device Manager for the wireless NIC. I checked for hidden devices in Device Manager but there were none. Here is my fundamental question that I've tried to find in the Windows 7 support center with no luck. How do I remove/delete/uninstall network adapters from the Windows 7 registry? in particular hidden, corrupted network adapters, that used to be working.

• How can I make Cygwin open a new window each time I use a Window 7 keyboard shortcut?

  [Update: The short answer is, if an application in the 3rd thing on your taskbar, press WindowsKey+Shift+3 to open a new instance. Hooray!] I have Chrome and Cygwin on my taskbar. Chrome's shortcut is Ctrl-Alt-C (as set through right clicking the icon and putting Ctrl-Alt-C into Chrome - Properties - Shortcut Key). Cygwin's shortcut is Ctrl-Alt-T. When I press Ctrl-Alt-C, I get a new Chrome window. Great! It's as if I had shift-clicked on the Chrome icon. When I press Ctrl-Alt-T, I get a Cygwin window the first time, but after that I just get focused on the Cygwin window. As if I had simply clicked on the Cygwin icon and not shift-clicked. As if Cygwin wasn't able to have more than one instance open. I can still shift-click the icon to get more instances. I've tried with different keys than Ctrl-Alt-T and got the same behavior. Strangely, I've twice managed to get it into a state (via just clearing and setting the shortcut key over and over) where a shortcut WOULD open multiple instances -- but it was Ctrl-Alt-G both times, which doesn't make sense to my brain which has been trained to use Ctrl-Alt-T for years. Ctrl-Alt-G usually behaves just as poorly as Ctrl-Alt-T, except for the two times when magically it started behaving properly. So I'm thinking this is a Windows 7 bug (which has existed since Windows XP at least), but I'm hoping someone knows something I don't :)

• Can't pin modified shortcuts to the Windows 7 task bar

  I have a shortcut to a .bat file which I pin to the task bar using a workaround by using another icon and this seems to work. Now I make a copy of that shortcut, point it to a different .bat file, rename it, and I can't pin this one to the task bar. I have to find some other new unused icon to pin, pin it, then modify it manually. The other problem this causes is that windows seems to track which icons were pinned even if they are modified after the fact. As such, if I use media player as my dummy icon, pin it, then alter it's name and shortcut to point to a .bat file, I can't re-pin windows media player and if I select unpin from the windows media player, it unpins my shortcut to my .bat file. I can't believe how ridiculous this is. Is there a way to pin anything I want to the taskbar (ie. .bat file in my case) that does not cause problems like this? Is there an easy way I can copy an existing shortcut and modify it and re-pin it to the taskbar? The reason I want to copy it is because I start a .bat file (in particular git bash) and I set properties on the window like quick edit, increase the screen buffer and set it's position and size manually. I don't want to have to do this to every single icon I want to pin since they will be identical aside from the shortcut url.
