• Has anyone gotten VB highlighting to work in Emacs23?

  I have found and installed the visual basic mode for emacs. It seems to be loading on emacs startup and the VB mode loads when I open a *.bas file. The code is not highlighted at all, however. I'm using Emacs23, tried it with 21 and saw no difference. Background for the curious: I am rewriting a set of codes from VB to Python. The syntax highlighting will make it much easier for me to see what's going on.

  Can a VB.NET For loop be constructed that mimics this C# code? TimeSpan oneDay = TimeSpan.FromDays(1.0); for (DateTime d = startDate; d < endDate; d += oneDay) { // some code } Obviously you could do it without a For loop (i.e., with a While); I'm just curious if there's a certain syntax to construct a VB.NET For loop with a non-integer increment that I'm not aware of.

  Is there a technical limitation of what kind of programs I can write with assembler (NASM)? For now I've only seem some program that do arithmetic operations, like adding two numbers. Is it possible to write complex assembler programs, that provide a GUI, access the file system, plays sounds et cetera? I know I wouldn't write such programs, but I'm curious, if there are technical limitations on what kind of programs I can write with assembler.

  Does the original data type of the username string in a call to FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(...) make any difference with regards to security or code maintainability? As I understand it, the cookie is encrypted and used to identify a user on each request. I'm curious whether it should affect the design of the primary key on my Users table in my database, eg. Guid vs int or a unique username string.

  I saw this video, and I am really curious how it was performed. Does anyone have any ideas? My intuition is that he scraped pixels from the screen (one per 'box'), and then fed that into some program to determine the next move.   I'm in need of getting a random record from a table via ActiveRecord. I've followed the example from Jamis Buck from 2006. However, I've also come across another way via a Google search (can't attribute with a link due to new user restrictions): rand_id = rand(Model.count) rand_record = Model.first(:conditions => [ "id >= ?", rand_id]) I'm curious how others on here have done it or if anyone knows what way would be more efficient.

  I'm curious if there's a way to search for files in the iPhone's directory ( the location is irrelevant). I am wanting to load in addresses from text files.   Hi, I want to develop an application that uses QtWebKit and JQuery. What I need to know is, is there any difference between reading JQuery from a file and evaluateJavaScript it, or embedding it as a script tag within the "page" that is displayed within the widget? If there is a difference, I am curious if anyone could explain why it would be. As far as I understood it, evaluateJavaScript() would feed the script parameter to the JavaScript interpreter, which interprets it in the current page's context. Thanks.

  I was quite surprised why I tried to multiply a float in C (with GCC 3.2) and that it did not do as I expected.. As a sample: int main() { float nb = 3.11f; nb *= 10; printf("%f\n", nb); } Displays: 31.099998 I am curious regarding the way floats are implemented and why it produces this unexpected behavior?

  If I allocate memory in one thread in C++ (either new or malloc) can I de-allocate it in another, or must both occur in the same thread? Ideally, I'd like to avoid this in the first place, but I'm curious to know is it legal, illegal or implementation dependent. Edit: The compilers I'm currently using include VS2003, VS2008 and Embedded C++ 4.0, targetting XP, Vista, Windows 7 and various flavours of Windows CE / PocketPC & Mobile. So basically all Microsoft but across an array of esoteric platforms.

  Has anyone ever had an incidence of downloading software from a genuine site, where an MD5 or SHA series hash for the download is also supplied and then discovered that the hash calculated from the downloaded artifact doesn't match the published hash? I understand the theory but am curious how prevalent the problem is. Many software publishers seem to discount the threat.
