  • Lending epub files for limited time to users

    I am looking for components to build a digital library who lends people epub (ebooks) for about a week. It's like a digital version of the offline old public library. Now I have found several flash (pdf) file streaming solutions. But that would require an active internet link. And like the public library, you are able to take your books to the beach or pool on holiday abroad where you have no connection. So streaming is no option. The other file restriction method I have found was DRM, but that would require a really expensive license of Adobe Content Server 4 which is not suitable for my little hobby project. But it seems that adobe content server and Adobe Digital Editions is the only option at the moment. Or are there open source alternatives?

  • Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

    My mysql installation was screwed up. I uninstalled and installed it multiple times. But I kept getting a hang or a error "cant connect". I now finally have it running with sudo -u mysql mysqld. How do I get mysqld to run at startup, and why do I need to run it as user mysql. Can I change it to run as root ?   • Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

    Hi all, I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance!     I have been asked by our marketing department to add Google Analytics custom variable tracking to my company's website. As the website uses server side includes, modifications to the tracking tag roll out globally - maintenance is therefore a headache! So, if I add the following code (keeping in mind SSI so every page has the same code): // visitor level tracking, id = 12345 // Record a unique id for each visitor. When they return also track this id _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar', 1, 'id', '12345', 1]); // page level tracking // If the user signs up for our newsletter we set newsletter to true // Each page they subsequently visit should also mark this as true _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar', 1, 'newsletter', 'true', 1]); I don't use GA and the marketing people don't use custom variables, so we don't actually know how or if this will work. Therefore my questions are:- Do I want Page, Session or Visitor level tracking? What happens when the same code is used on every page? Can GA 'overwrite' a setting. For example, if I set newsletter to true on page X and then user navigates to page Y, will the variable also be marked there?

    For testing emails I don't want to actually send an email out (and can't anyway as ISP blocks port 25). I have installed Sendmail, and what I want to do is install a mail server on the same pc that is sending the email which I can simply send the emails to, and receive them on my pc. so I am looking for a couple of guides. install and configure sendmail correctly for this. install and configure a mail server correctly for this. setup mail client (evolution) to connect to the mail server Can anyone help with this?

    all. I'm struggling to build an [B]audience[/B] for [B]electronic blog[/B] . The blog is relatively new and has around 30 pages. The unique visitors I get are approximately [B]120 - daily[/B]. I know about directories, rss, comments and guest blogging, but is there other more effective strategy to build some quality audience? As I see nowadays there aren't enough materials in my country about this. What about digg and reddit? Everytime I post some link there: no traffic comes to me. Can you suggest me other digg/reddit/stumbleupon tactics to get followers or there are similar sites which would tend to give me some serious traffic.   • PLESK PostFix Error Local in maillog, how to troubleshoot

    I'm using the PHP mail() function, using PostFix, on CentOS6, Plesk 10.4, and my email is not getting delivered to a particular address. My personal GMail and Yahoo email addresses receive email from my server fine and do not produce errors.   • Why is my system freezing when I switch users

    Hello I've recently upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 64bit. I'm running AMD graphics with the proprietary drivers. I have two user accounts. Mine(administrator) and my girlfriend's(standard) My girlfriend clicks "switch user" from my lock screen and logs in fine. I then try to click "switch user" from her lock screen and everything goes black. Then the monitor blinks on and off with just a single cursor. I have no way to access the terminal, the system is unresponsive and I have to hit the power button. Even ctrl + alt + f4 or ctrl + alt + t doesn't get me a terminal. When I press the power button on my system, it does start printing out the shutdown sequence on the monitor. Here is my .xsession-errors Script for ibus started at run_im.   • Foraward Traffic from local machine to proxy server using iptables

    I am using Ubuntu Server 12.04. My IP is 192.168.4.160. I want to route the HTTP traffic generated locally from my system destined to a particular URL (say x.x.x.x) to pass through proxy server. My proxy server is 192.168.0.13:3128. I added following rule in iptables sudo iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp -d x.x.x.x --dport 80 -j DNAT --to 192.168.0.13:3128 However, this rule does not seem to work for me. I captured packet in wireshark and I saw that packet is still going to x.x.x.x I am not very much familiar with iptables, so please try to be specific. Thanks in advance

    I am a front-end developer. For many experiemnets I do I need to have a server that talks JSON with my client side app. Normally that server is a simple server that response to my POSTs and GETs. For example I need to setup a server that saves, modifies and read data from a "library" database like this: POST /books create a book GET /book/:id gets a book and so on... What is the fastest and easiest technology stack for database and server in this case? I am open to use Ruby, Nodejs and anything that do the job fast and easy.   • Samba network sharing NTFS drives and root permissions from local drives

    I'm able to share my internal 2ndry NTFS drives (sdb1,2 and 3) on the network with Windows computers now but even though Samba read/write is enabled, Windows network computers can only open files "read-only" and can't save files to the samba shared drives/folders. I try to set permissions in Ubuntu via folder and/or file properties even logged in root via Nautilus but all the samba shared folders and files are set as owner = root, accessible and does not allow me to change them to read/write, it just resets to root, accessible, in other words, I can't change permissions. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 Gnome on an old Dell Dimension 2400. Also, in order to for me to copy or move any files from the Ubuntu drive to the sdb1,2 or 3 drives, I have to gksu nautilus. This consequently prevents me from copying .ISO files to my "Multisys" thumb drive too.
