  Hello! I have a managed VPS, so whatever i need i can just ask my support, and they will do it for me. Now i plan to migrate to unmanaged VPS, so i need some guides, tips on how and where to start learning. I will have more specific questions once i start using it, but now i just need some general answers about this topic. Thanks. Update: Ok, i have decided to go for unmanaged VPS with cPanel. OS is CentOS-5. I contacted support only for some small(i think) things like creating new account in whm, some database importing, installing new software(rare)... What i will be using is apache, php, mysql. I think i will be able to cope with upgrading to new versions, so the thing that interests me the most is security i guess.

• Database backup regardless of backup made through a control panel?

  I know that all CMS or CMC platforms have some sort of walkthrough for their users to fully backup and restore the database or the whole website. While we all can perform such backups (and there are even plugins which automate the whole procedure) and restore them in necessity (such as when we migrate to a new server), one can also backup the whole website by means of such control panels as Directadmin or Cpanel. Now, I just want to know if it is necessary for us to do database or website backups the way they are described by a specific CMC or CMS developer even after we perform a whole website backup in a control panel such as DA? An example of such CMS platforms is moodle. Moodle Docs describes how we can backup and restore moodle in here. So do we, out of necessity, have to make the backup the way described, or we can simply do it the Control panel way? Thanks

  I have Ubuntu 10.04 running gnome and two monitors. I am wondering if a can get a better multi-monitor configuration tool. The one I have, gnome-display-properties, has too many problems, including: when I swapped my monitors over, the narrower one now on the left. There is a width calculation error, such that I have a virtual monitor the width of the wide-monitor on the narrow-monitor and part of the wide monitor. And a virtual narrow-monitor on the remainder of the wide-monitor. I would like: nobugs. to be able to select which is primary monitor. to have multiple configurations. configurations to be automatically selected based on which monitors are attached. configurations to be cycled (reliably) when display mode key is pressed. when a display is deactivated, for windows to migrate to remaining monitors. option to not change display resolution when mirroring, but to use side/top blanking bars to pad out screen.

• What version of Windows Server 2008 to Get

  One of the projects I'm working on is looking like we're going to need to migrate from CentOS 5.4 over to something else (we need to run Postgresql 8.3+, and CentOS/RHEL only support 8.1), and one of the options will be Windows Server. Since 2008 R2 is out that's what I'm looking at. I'll need to run Postgres and Tomcat and don't really require anything that Windows has like IIS (if I can run Server Core, even better!). The other kicker is it will be virtualized through VMWare ESXI 4.0 so that we have three separate boxes: development, Quality, and Production servers. From a licensing standpoint though, and I good enough with just the Web Server edition? Am I right in assuming that will be three licenses? Or should I just jump up to Enterprise so that I get 4 VM licenses?

• Backing up Windows 2003 Server that has Certificate Authority

  I want to export and migrate a Certificate Authority CA role from a Windows 2003 machine to a new copy of Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine. I was told that I cannot have 2 CA roles on the same network at the same time. Therefore, I must first export the certificates on the older machine, delete the CA role, then add the CA role on the new machine and import the certificates into it. As a safety precaution, I am tasked to find a backup solution in case this does not work and I need to revert back to the old Windows 2003 CA. My question is: What is the best software for doing this type of backup? I am currently trying out Symantec Backup Exec 2012. Which I hope will allow me to create a backup prior to removing CA role on Windows 2003. If this CA migration fails, the backup will allow me to revert the old machine to a time before I removed its CA role.

• Can you link to a good MySQL dumper PHP script?

  I need to migrate a website to another host. I have only FTP server access and MySQL name+pass (the MySQL server's IP I was provided is 127.0.0.1, and there's neither PhpMyAdmin nor SSHell to use). A web app run there can access the DB using credentials I know and localhost server. So I'd need a PHP script, that will correctly dump all the available databases of the MySQL server so that they can be imported on the new server. Can you recommend a good one?

• Migrating a NAS while keeping the files and their rights intact ?

  Right, what we wish (or need) to do is to migrate a NAS from a old machine to a new one. problem is, we wish to keep the folder hierarchie intact, and all the settings and shares. Now I vaguely recall microsoft used to have a tool to do exactly this. It would copy the folders exactly, with the rights intact, and then remove the shares on the old machine and reactivate them on the new machine. Now is there anyone who could help me find it again, or perhaps find a better solution for it ? Much appreciated guys

• How to efficiently dump a huge MySQL innodb database?

  I got an Ubuntu 10.04 production MySQL database server where total size of database is 260 GB while size of root partition is itself 300 GB where DB is stored, essentially means around 96% of / is full and there's no space left for storing dump/backup etc. No other disk is attached to server as of now. My task is to migrate this database to other server sitting in different datacenter. Question is how to do that efficiently with minimum downtime? I'm thinking in line of: Request to attach an extra drive to server and take a dump in that drive. Transfer dump to new server, restore it and make new server slave of existing one to keep data in sync When migration is needed, break replication, update slave config to accept read/write requests and make old server read-only so it won't entertain any write requests and tell app developers to update there config with new IP address for db. What's your suggestions to improve this or any alternate better approach for this task?

• Need to move a debian server from i686 to x86_64 architecture

  I have a debian server that I need to move from one hosting provider to another. I don't really know how the old server was setup, all I know is that it's running a Ruby on Rails application with a lot of custom libraries installed and that I should prepare myself for a painful migration. Old server: -os: debian 5.0.9 -used disk space: 3.2GB -architecture: i686 New server: -os: debian 5.0.9 -free disk space: 10GB -architecture: x86_64 As you can see the problem is that the servers are running different architectures. Q: Is there anyway I could somehow migrate the old to the new server in a few steps (or am I just dreaming I could) ? I was thinking maybe I could: -get list of packages and gems installed on old server and use for loop to install them all on the new -copy the disk content from old to new server while excluding what is architecture-specific (the problem is that I don't really know what to exclude).

• Why can I not use the full capacity of my SSD?

  I am using Paragon to migrate Windows 7 to an SSD. The C drive which should be migrated is a 100GB partition. During the process, Paragon formats the SSD to 80GB. Why doesn't it take the 100 GB? It later fails because it thinks there isn't enough space on the SSD. However the SSD is 11GB bigger than the partition, and only 45GB of the partition were used anyway. How do I get around this? Is there another tool to do the same job which does it better ?

• Is there a way to rsync in batches?

  I have a huge chunk of data (11G) in a subversion repository that I'm using rsync to migrate to Alfresco, which lucene indexes new files as they hit the file system. I'm using a dav mount as a proxy to allow me to rsync. The issue I'm having is the indexing post-rsync is quite an expensive operation for such a huge chunk of data, so I was wondering whether there's a way I could logically separate the rsync into identically-sized batches (say 500MB each) so I could schedule them in cron. At the moment, I'm traversing the top level folders and taking the smallest ones across first, but once I'm done with those, the much larger sub-directories are going to be quite troublesome.   I am preparing to migrate a pretty old XP machine to Windows 7. I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and got a couple of smaller issues (low 512Mb RAM complaints and similar stuff). Apart from that, everything else was shown as compatible, including my old ATI Radeon 9550/X1050 card: ATI Radeon 9550/X1550 Series: This device is compatible with Windows 7. The thing that concerns me is that people around the web seem to be unable to actually find a Windows 7 driver for this card. Even the ATI web page states that this is a legacy device: If the user chooses to, they can install the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista graphics driver under Windows 7. [...] Using the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista driver under Windows 7 is not officially supported by AMD [...] Should I trust the Advisor and continue with the update? Does this mean Microsoft will provide at least a generic driver which will allow hardware acceleration with this card?

  Hello, I've just purcheased a couple of adaptec controller (2405/5405) for my ESXi 4.0 U1 servers. Currently ESXi and a couple of VMs are hosted on single sata boot disk connected to a nvidia on board non-RAID controller. I know that it's possible to migrate from single disk to RAID 1 with adaptec and I'm pleased with that, but I'm not sure if ESXi has already the right drivers installed/loaded for this controller. Is there any way I can check this? Is ESXi clever enough to recognize the new hardware and load the right module? Thanks

• Transfer an account from a 'dead' domain

  So - following from my previous question: How do I stop DFSR replication preventing a Domain Controller from advertising Domain Services?, I lost the FSMO DC, and my only other DC was in an unrecoverable state. I've created a new domain to continue my testing, but now have an issue which I suspect is relevant to any domain suffering a "catastrophe". I have user accounts and client PCs "on the old domain". (Actually 1 client PC and 3 accounts) I can still sign into the client PC as any of those users on the "dead" domain, because that is cached. There are (thankfully) no encrypted files in the "old" domain. What I would now like to do is migrate the full content (files, preferences, etc) from the "dead" domain to the new "live" domain for any/all user accounts, for the "old" PC. Is there anything out there which can assist me in doing so?

SERVER1 1.1.1.1 ----- (internet ) ----- SERVER 2.2.2.2 I asume to use iptables to perform this, for that used this rule on my centOS box in the server1. /etc/sysctl.conf: net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p udp --dest 1.1.1.1 --dport 27015 -j DNAT --to-destination 2.2.2.2:27015 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -d 2.2.2.2 -p udp --dport 27015 -j SNAT --to 1.1.1.1 But the client cannot connect to the server from the old ip, the redirection don't started.

• What is the best way to back up dedicated web server? (Amanda versus Rsync)

  Hello everyone, I am trying to establish valid back ups for my web server. It is a linux box on CentOS. I have asked around and "rsync" was suggested by some of the server fault community. However, my coworker at work says that this is really only moving over the physical files and isn't really a usable "snapshot." He suggested using "amanda" and that this did full server snapshots that are more what I am accustomed to. I know at my company we have virtual machines that we take snapshots of and we can restore everything back to just as they were with little effort and little downtime. Is this possible with rsync? Or would I need to create a new server and then migrate the files back and do various configurations? I think I prefer being able to just reset everything to a point in time. Forgive my ignorance, Back ups are something that I have never really had to worry about before.

  So here's the situation. I've got about 20,000 maildir email accounts chewing up a several hundred GB of space on our email server. Maildir by nature keeps thousands of tiny a** little files, instead of one .mbox file or the like... So i need to migrate all of these several millions of files from one server to the other, for both space and life-cycle reasons. the conventional methods i would use all work just fine. rsync is the option that comes immediately to mind, however i wanted to see if there are any other "better" options out there. Rsync not handling multi-threaded transfers in this situation sucks because it never actually gets up to speed and saturates my network connection, because of this the transfer from one server to another will take hours beyond hours, when it shouldn't really take more then one or two. I know this is highly opinionated and subjective and will therefore be marked community wiki.

  i work on a little php platform and my server is nginx. The first version of this php site was developed for Apache server. I need to upgrade the site and to migrate it to nginx server. The problem is url rewriting.   Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to do the following considering that I would like to migrate domains. I have lets say: one.com/files/one.html one.com/files/two.php one.com/other/three.html one.com/other/four.doc one.com/other/subdirectory/five.doc I am migrating to two.com So I would like to make RESPECTIVE 301 redirects to the following: two.com/old/files/one.html two.com/old/files/two.php two.com/old/other/three.html two.com/old/other/four.doc two.com/old/other/subdirectory/five.doc I've tried with cPanel and although I come "close" with the redirects option I can't seem to make it happen. The folders are not much (10 -12) the file are a lot, and obviously impossible to make it manually. How would you proceed? Can this/ should this be done with regex from the .htaccess?? Can you direct all the elements of a subdirectory in the manner expressed above? I hope the question is clear enough, if not please ask for any clarification needed!! Thanks in advance!!

  I've got an issue I would rather handle with the array online - I am using RAID0 for temporary video storage - data that is low-cost to restore, but that is used frequently. The software array looks like this: md1 : active raid0 sdb1[2] sdc1[3] sdd1[0] sde1[1] 1953487616 blocks 64k chunks I have another partition (sda1) in this system, that I want to use to replace sdc1 (The drives are of varying age, and sdc1 is definitely the slowest one, limiting the entire array's sequential read performance to only 300MB/s). Is there a way to migrate the data from sdc1 to sda1 while the array is still online?

  Possible Duplicate: Migrating users and mailboxes from postfix / Maildir to Postfix with Mysql backend So I've got 60 or so users on a hand rolled postfix installation on openbsd and I'd like to move their mailboxes to our new mail server running iRedMail (postfix, vmail/mysql back end) Does anyone know of a good way to do this? Preferably a script I can run to keep syncing the users mailboxes as MX records get updated? I presume one way (though I don't have all their passwords!) would be to have a command line imap client that simulated the users copying their mail themselves but I'm sure there must be a shell / php script to migrate users? Looking at the documentation i have found so far, it only mentions multi tenant support when upgrading from 2010 RTM - SP1, and not what you do if you have already got 2010 SP1 installed. So, from what i can gather, i have a few options: Install a new Exchange server with Multi Tenant support and migrate DBs over Back everything up and start again Something else... • Entourage to Outlook Migration questions

  I am currently migrating a users information from a pop email account to my exchange server. I have already migrated them over to my hosted exchange, and their email is following properly. Now, the user is moving from Entourage on a Mac (10.7) to Outlook 2010 on a PC (Windows 7). I was wondering what the easiest way was to migrate him since there is no .pst files. I have been able to get his email over by dragging the inbox from Entourage to the desktop, then converting the files to .eml using IMAPSize, importing them to Outlook Express (which will only work on Windows XP), then exporting to a pst, then importing in the new account. Takes awhile with large emails, but it works. The issue I am now having is for calendar items. I exported the calendar and got a folder with all the .ics files, but Outlook 2010 doesn't seem to have an easy way to import all of them. Any thoughts?

• Existing tables with binaries to use filestream

  I've got a few tables for which I want to use filestream storage. These tables already contain binary data and have rowguids. However at the time they were were created, the tables were not added to a filestream enabled filegroup. What is the best way to have these tables use filestream at this point? Do I need to drop + recreate the tables and migrate the data? Is there an easier way? The database already has filestream enabled and there are other tables which are using them.

Since I am not able to migrate it myself and would like an answer as soon as possible I'm reposting it here instead: I am to upgrade a printer driver remotely and has prepared a batch file for this. The only problem is that when I'm installing the drivers I get a popup in which I need to press "Continue Anyway" on. Is there a way to automatically accept this question?
