  • Friday Spotlight: Network Troubleshooting with Oracle Linux

    - by Chris Kawalek
Happy Friday, everyone! Our Spotlight this week is on a fantastic new article by Oracle's Robert Chase and posted on Oracle Technology Network. The article steps through, with command line examples, several strategies for tracking down network connectivity issues. From the article: "When applications that use network connectivity for communication are not working, the cause is often a mystery. Despite advances in modern operating systems, many users believe there is no way to directly "see" what's going over the wire, and that often leads to confusion and difficulties when something goes wrong. The reality is that you can actually see what's going over the wire, and there are a number of tools built into Oracle Linux for troubleshooting network issues. This article will help solve some of the mystery and make network connectivity a bit more user friendly." I highly recommend checking this article out, it's a good one! Network Troubleshooting with Oracle Linux  We'll see you next week! -Chris

  • Have to run sudo dhclient eth0 automatically every boot

    - by Fyksen
    I just installed ubuntu 12.04.1 alternative install (for raid 0 on some disks). I Have some problems with the net. I'm at school, we use cable, and it got IPv6. If I run ifconfig eth0 heres my output: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr e0:cb:4e:87:ff:db inet addr:128.39.194.217 Bcast:128.39.194.223 Mask:255.255.255.224 inet6 addr: 2001:700:1100:8008:e2cb:4eff:fe87:ffdb/64 Scope:Global inet6 addr: fe80::e2cb:4eff:fe87:ffdb/64 Scope:Link inet6 addr: 2001:700:1100:8008:48f7:c23:1d87:da6c/64 Scope:Global UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:1063378 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:489811 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:1577173461 (1.5 GB) TX bytes:37043669 (37.0 MB) Interrupt:68 Base address:0x6000 My /etc/network/interfaces look like this: # This file describes the network interfaces available on your system # and how to activate them.   • /etc/resolv.conf nameserver fd00::1

    - by user88631
My /etc/resolv.conf constantly get a mysterious entry, i run a home network with ipv6 provided by ravd, the interface is auto-configured by Network manager (all name server lookups are lost when this line is first in my /etc/resolv.conf) . Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) **# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN** nameserver fd00::1 nameserver 192.168.1.1 search home.int When ping is working cat /etc/resolv.conf # Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8) # DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE BY HAND -- YOUR CHANGES WILL BE OVERWRITTEN nameserver 192.168.1.1 search home.int So something is putting fd00::1 at start of file, not if I ping6 fd00::1 I get Destination unreachable: Administratively prohibited To diagnose this I ran the router with single cable to connected to ubuntu machine. Ran tcpdump + restarted network on ubuntu. "tcpdump ip6 -e -i eth0 | grep fd00" finds nothing, it's not being advertised via the network.. The only hit I got was when an upstream router refused a connection attempt from the ubuntu machine to fd00::1. I have also switched on debug for network manager & it appears to set the mystery line.. 15:22:14 storage-pc NetworkManager[349]: <info> Activation (eth0) Stage 5 of 5 (IPv4 Commit) complete. 15:22:14 storage-pc NetworkManager[349]: <warn> dnsmasq exited with error: Other problem (5) 15:22:14 storage-pc NetworkManager[349]: <debug> [1346822534.281528] [nm-dns-manager.c:598] update_dns(): updating resolv.conf 15:22:14 storage-pc NetworkManager[349]: <debug> [1346822534.281875] [nm-dns-manager.c:719] update_dns(): DNS: plugin dnsmasq ignored (caching disabled) 15:22:14 storage-pc NetworkManager[349]: <info> ((null)): writing resolv.conf to /sbin/resolvconf 15:22:14 storage-pc dbus[2184]: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.nm_dispatcher' 15:22:14 storage-pc dnsmasq[2875]: reading /etc/resolv.conf 15:22:14 storage-pc dnsmasq[2875]: using nameserver 192.168.1.1#53 15:22:14 storage-pc dnsmasq[2875]: using nameserver fd00::1#53 Any suggestions on how to find out where this comes from?

  • Uploading or attaching files that located on a shared drive doesn't work?

    - by Alex
I have this odd, quite minor, but annoying issue that I am quite perplexed about. Whenever I try to upload a file via my browser(let's say attach a file to an email in GMail), I click 'Browse' button and it opens standard file selection dialog, that doesn't show network drives. Further more if I try to drag a file from a network drive into GMail, it doesn't work either, it just doesn't let me do that. This issue has been around for quite sometime now, and I am just curious if this is something on my side or if it's a bug or a misconfiguration of some sort. FWIW, I am currently running 10.10, network drive is a samba share on NAS. This happens in FF and Chrome and this is only happens with Samba mounts. As a matter of fact, NFS volumes that are located on the same network operate perfectly fine.

  • Cannot make wireless "forget" networks to which it cannot connect

    - by cboettig
I see that I can delete networks that my machine "remembers" from nm-applet by clicking on the wireless icon in the panel and selecting "edit connections" - "wireless". However, sometimes I click on the wrong wireless connection by accident in the dropdown list. If the connection is secure, the machine of course never successfully connects, but somehow it still seems to memorize the ESSID. Whenever I'm in range of that wireless, it now tries to connect. Worse, if not connected to any other network, it repeatedly prompts me to connect to this network. If left unattended, I may find dozens of copies of the window prompting me to log in to this mistaken network. There must be a file somewhere that records this connection ID, but I cannot find it. The only connections appearing in the "edit connections" I mention above are those to which I've actually connected. How do I find the file and delete the line corresponding to the offending "memorized" network?

  • How much packet loss is normal?

    - by Fabian
I started monitoring our network using SmokePing. Users occasionally complain about bad network connections, but the problems went away after some minutes usually. I now wanted to get some more quantitative information about those problems. SmokePing regularly pings servers inside our network, in a connected network and outside hosts. I only have a limited amount of control over our internal network and none at all for the connection to the outside and to the second network. I now see quite often (2-4 times a day) that packets to the second network and the outside are dropped. Most of the times it is 1-2 packets out of 20, sometimes more. Inside our internal network no packets are dropped. Is this an expected amount of packet loss, or does it indicate that something is wrong? I'm mainly wondering if I should bother the university IT department about it, or if I should just accept it as it is.

  • How to completely remove wicd from 12.04?

    - by danijelc
I had issues with WiFi so I removed Network Manager. I booted Windows OS (dual booting Windows 7 and 12.04) to download wicd 1.7.2.4. Extracted it and installed. However, wcid worked properly with Wired Connection but could not connect to WiFi. So, I re-installed Network Manager which works properly now, and wicd connects to WiFi too. As soon as I disconnect from Network Manager, wicd connects only to wired. At this point, I wanted to remove wicd but apt-get returns no wicd installed, can't see it in Synaptic or Software Center, but only in Applications list under Dash home. Of course wcid icon shows connections, and resulting connected, so my system shows both applets for wicd and network manager in the top panel. When running dpkg commands, wicd is not listed as installed package. Any suggestion how to remove wicd? Consider that I started with Ubuntu just few months ago so my knowledge base is limited.

  • MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) Wi-Fi network connection breaks after few minutes

    - by Yanick Landry
I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard). After connecting on a Wi-Fi network, the connection "breaks" after a few minutes. What I mean by "breaking" is that all requests, whether it is loading a web page, connecting to a share folder, connecting to my local router at 192.168.0.1, or pinging anything doesn't get through (time out). When in a "break" situation, I can see in the Network Settings panel that I still have an active IP, which I can successfully ping. I have this problem at home with a router D-Link DI-624 and at work with a D-Link WBR-2310, all with updated firmwares. I thought DHCP was the issue. So I tried assigning a fixed IP address (192.168.0.166). It successfully connects, but after a few minutes, the connection still breaks. The solution I'm currently using is that I disable the AirPort (on the Network icon menu in the top bar), wait a few seconds then re-enable it. It then quickly works, but the connection still breaks after a few minutes. I tried Googling my problem but I think I can't find any good keywords ! It's my first question here, so sorry if I don't respect some rules.

  • Network configuration problem

    - by Musti
in my dorm I have to change network configuration and then if it is successfull, I have to enter a user name and password for wired internet connection. Anyway, I had many attempts but I couldnt achieve, and please look at my steps and tell me if there is something wrong and at the end there is an error, but I really dont have any idea about this error. (I am a new ubuntu user, and network is far away of my interests) 1) /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 172.030.014.038 netmask 255.255.255.252 network 192.168.2.0 broadcast 192.168.2.255 gateway 172.030.014.038 2) sudo gedit /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 010.050.001.001 nameserver 010.050.001.002 3) /etc/init.d/networking stop Deconfiguring network interfaces... [ OK ] 4) /etc/init.d/networking restart Running /etc/init.d/networking restart is deprecated because it may not enable again some interfaces Reconfiguring network interfaces... 172.030.014.038: Unknown host ifconfig: `--help' gives usage information. Failed to bring up eth0 Note: IP-address, netmask, gateway, Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server ara given by the management of Dorm. It wad very easy in windows but I couldnt achieve in Ubuntu. I also tried to edit from "edit connections" but the save button is gray and I cannot save it. Thanks in advance. / Musti

  • how to find 3g modem signal strength with out AT commands?

    - by neckTwi
when i try to find signal strength of my modem using AT+CSQ, the usb device is locked by the network manager. To find the signal strength with AT+CSQ i have to first disable network connection using #nmcli nm wwan off to unlock the device inode /dev/ttyUSBX. Is there any nmcli option to get signal strength or any other option? EDIT The gdbus object for NetworkManager don't have any method like getSignalStrength. Network manager is locking device file preventing to use AT commands. nm-applet was able to display signal strength in system tray. so there should be a way to get signal strength form network manager! nmcli is command line counter part of nm-applet. Can i get signal strength using nmcli? nothing about signal strength is mentioned in its man pages.

  • Neural network input preprocessing

    - by TND
It's clear that the effectiveness of a neural network depends strongly on the format you give it to work with. You want to preprocess it into the most convenient form you can algorithmically get to, so that the neural network doesn't have to account for that itself. I'm working on a little project that (surprise!) is going to be using neural networks. My future goal is to eventually use NEAT, which I'm really excited about. Anyway, one of my ideas involves moving entities in continuous 2D space, from a top-down perspective (this would be a really cool game AI). Of course, unless these guys are blind, they're going to be able to see the world around them. There's a lot of different ways this information could be fed into the network. One interesting but expensive way is to simply render a top-down "view" of things, with the entities as dots on the picture, and feed that in. I was hoping for something much simpler to use (at least at first), such as a list of the x (maybe 7 or so) nearest entities and their position in relative polar coordinates, orientation, health, etc., but I'm trying to think of the best way to do it. My first instinct was to order them by distance, which would inherently also train the neural network to consider those more "important". However, I was thinking- what if there's two entities that are nearly the same distance away? They could easily alternate indexes in that list, confusing the network. My question is, is there a better way of representing this? Essentially, the issue is the network needs a good way of keeping track of who's who, while knowing (by being inputted) relevant information about the list of entities it can see. Thanks!

  • Gigabit network limited to 25MB/s by CPU. How to make it faster?

    - by netvope
I have a Acer Aspire R1600-U910H with a nForce gigabit network adapter. The maximum TCP throughput of it is about 25MB/s, and apparently it is limited by the single core Intel Atom 230; when the maximum throughput is reached, the CPU usage is about 50%-60%, which corresponds to full utilization considering this is a Hyper-threading enabled CPU. The same problem occurs on both Windows XP and on Ubuntu 8.04. On Windows, I have installed the latest nForce chipset driver, disabled power saving features, and enabled checksum offload. On Linux, the default driver has checksum offload enabled. There is no Linux driver available on Nvidia's website. ethtool -k eth0 shows that checksum offload is enabled: Offload parameters for eth0: rx-checksumming: on tx-checksumming: on scatter-gather: on tcp segmentation offload: on udp fragmentation offload: off generic segmentation offload: off The following is the output of powertop when the network is idle: Wakeups-from-idle per second : 61.9 interval: 10.0s no ACPI power usage estimate available Top causes for wakeups: 90.9% (101.3) <interrupt> : eth0 4.5% ( 5.0) iftop : schedule_timeout (process_timeout) 1.8% ( 2.0) <kernel core> : clocksource_register (clocksource_watchdog) 0.9% ( 1.0) dhcdbd : schedule_timeout (process_timeout) 0.5% ( 0.6) <kernel core> : neigh_table_init_no_netlink (neigh_periodic_timer) And when the maximum throughput of about 25MB/s is reached: Wakeups-from-idle per second : 11175.5 interval: 10.0s no ACPI power usage estimate available Top causes for wakeups: 99.9% (22097.4) <interrupt> : eth0 0.0% ( 5.0) iftop : schedule_timeout (process_timeout) 0.0% ( 2.0) <kernel core> : clocksource_register (clocksource_watchdog) 0.0% ( 1.0) dhcdbd : schedule_timeout (process_timeout) 0.0% ( 0.6) <kernel core> : neigh_table_init_no_netlink (neigh_periodic_timer) Notice the 20000 interrupts per second. Could this be the cause for the high CPU usage and low throughput? If so, how can I improve the situation? The other computers in the network can usually transfer at 50+MB/s without problems. And a minor question: How can I find out what is the driver in use for eth0?

  • NM applet dropdown options not working

    - by Prarobo
I recently realized the dropdown options from my nm-applet are no longer working. But I can still control the network configuration by going through the dash. This happened very recently. I only realized this before a week. I guess some recent update screwed it up. I have these related packages installed network-manager-gnome 0.9.4.1-0ubuntu2 libnm-gtk0 0.9.4.1-0ubuntu2 network-manager 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4.1 Any help would be great.

  • How to study programming with C language

    - by gurugio
I am using only C for 5 years. So I am sure that I know C grammer, but I have no idea how to advance programming skills. There are many books for modern languages (such as C++, Java) to study programming skills like the refactoring or pattern, software architecture. But no book is written with C language. The book author say that his/her book is not language-dependent, but I don't think so. How can I advance my programming skills? I have to study modern language and read the books? Are there books about software design or programming skill written with C?

  • Network Your Computers & Devices: Step by Step

    - by The Geek
If you’re looking for a great book to help you learn more about Windows home networking, there’s a new book on the market by our good friend Ciprian, and published by none other than Microsoft Press. Note: our friend Ciprian has been a guest contributor here on How-To Geek in the past, and he’s not only a geek that knows what he’s talking about, he’s also one of the more honest and decent people I’ve worked with. In his spare time, he runs the 7 Tutorials web site. The Book One of the great things about this book is that you aren’t limited to just Windows networking—it also explains how to connect Windows 7, XP, Vista, Mac OS X, and even Linux on the same network and share folders and devices between them. Everything in the book is written in a typical How-To Geek step-by-step format, with plenty of screenshots and pictures to help you through the process. Book Outline If you’re going to be spending some money on the book, you probably want to know what it’s all about, and since the Amazon page doesn’t give, well, much information at all, here’s the entire outline for you: Setting Up a Router and Devices Setting User Account on All Computers Setting Up Your Libraries on All Windows 7 Computers Creating the Network Customizing Network Sharing Settings in Windows 7 Creating the Homegroup and Joining Windows 7 Computers Sharing Libraries and Folders Sharing and Working with Devices Streaming Media Over the Network and the Internet Sharing Between Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 Computers Sharing Between Mac OS X and Windows 7 Computers Sharing Between Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7 Computers Keeping the Network Secure Setting Up Parental Controls Troubleshooting Network and Internet Problems It’s a great book, with loads of information, and compared to most tech books isn’t very expensive—only $19.79 for the paperback and $9.99 for the Kindle version. • Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge: HarQen Nodal

Today, I give you Nodal from the HarQen (@harqen) team, Kris Gösser (@krisgosser), Jesse Vogt (@jesse_vogt) and Matt Stockton (@mstockton). The guys from HarQen built Nodal to provide a visual way to navigate your connections and conversations in Oracle Social Network and view relationships. Using Nodal, you can: Search through names and profiles in Oracle Social Network. Choose people and view their social graphs in a visually useful way. Expand nodes in the social graph and add that person’s social graph to the Nodal view for comparison. Move nodes around and lock them in place for easier viewing, using a physics engine for movement. Adjust the physics engine properties according to your viewing preferences. Select nodes in the social graph and create a conversation directly based on the selection. Here are some shots of Nodal. They really don’t do the physics engine justice, but maybe the guys at Harqen will post a video of what they did for your viewing pleasure. #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; }   Nodal’s visuals wowed the judges and the audience, and anyone with a decent-sized social network presence understands the need for good network visualization. Tools like Nodal allow you to discover hidden connections in your network and maximize the value of your weak ties and find mavens, a very important key to getting work done. • What are some topics you'd like to see covered in an 'Introduction to Network Security' book?

    - by seth.vargo
I'm trying to put together a list of topics in Network Security and prioritize them accordingly. A little background on the book - we are trying to gear the text towards college students, as an introduction to security, and toward IT professionals who have recently been tasked with securing a network. The idea is to create a book that covers the most vital and important parts of securing a network with no assumptions. So, if you were a novice student interested in network security OR an IT professional who needed a crash course on network security, what topics do you feel would be of the upmost importance in such a text?

  • Ubuntu 12.04 host – Virtualbox 4.1.12 Guest=Windows 7 – Network will not connect

    - by user287529
Ubuntu 12.04 host – Virtualbox 4.1.12 Guest=Windows 7 – Network will not connect. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 on an Acer Aspire 5742-7645 laptop with 4GB memory, Intel Core i3 processor, Intel HD Graphics, DVD drive, 802.1 b/g/n, and 500 GB HD. I connect to my router via a wireless connection. I have installed Virutalbox 4.1.12 from the Ubuntu Software Center and installed Guest additions 4.1.12 in the Windows 7 guest session. I have Windows XP and Windows 7 installed as guests in Virtual box The network settings are different for XP and 7 – see below. Network Settings XP guest = Adapter 1: PCnet-FAST III (NAT) - Network works perfectly and has worked well for several years. Network Settings Win 7 = Adapter 1: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (Bridged adapter, eth1) Promiscuous Mode = allow all Cable connected = checked When I originally installed Windows 7, I tried NAT and the guest network would not connect. Once I changed the setting to the above (Bridged) the Network worked perfectly. However, what I believe is after updates (not sure if it was an Ubuntu or Windows update) the guest network stopped working and I can not get it to connect. • Connecting a network drive only when the VPN is connected?

    - by leeand00
I have a thumb drive that I want to be able to connect to the same place over the network at one location as it is locally.
