• Why does Windows 7 always automatically change the input or keyboard language?

  I am wondering why Windows 7 always automatically changes my input or keyboard language. I've a notebook with an integrated QWERTY keyboard English (United States). Traveling, I use that one but, additionally, I've my own as well as a much better keyboard at home which is a QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany). Thus, being at home, I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard. Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not play along at this one. Every time, I start up my notebook, it is usually set to English (United States) but that's not the problem. In case, I'd use my notebook QWERTY keyboard English (United States), that's fine. However, if I start up my notebook and I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany), I usually press ALT + Left Shift in order to switch from English (United States) to German (Germany) and Windows 7 switches the input language but only for the program that is currently open. If my input language is set to German (Germany) and I, e.g., open NotePad, Windows 7 automatically switches my input language to English (United States). This is very annoying since I've to change the input or keyboard language to German (Germany) every time I open up a new program. Why doesn't Windows 7 stay with one input language if I changed it manually by pressing ALT + Left Shift? Why doesn't the manual change of the input or keyboard language apply for the whole Windows 7? Why does it only affect the currently opened program? Since I've two keyboards with two different layouts, I seriously need to have both of the keyboards languages installed. I tried both of the below settings in order to find a solution for my problem. Currently, I am using the first option, two input languages. • IIS 7.5 Basic authorization issue

  When I log on using correct user name\password (I always copy-paste them) I get 401.1 error. User name and password are correct (user is created on server locally, not a domain one). I can run program as this user (runas /noprofile /user:tmp notepad.exe). Basic authorization's default domain is a server name, realm is empty. I've saved FailedReqLogFile. AUTH_BASIC_LOGON_FAILED shows ErrorCode="Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. (0x8007052e)" and MODULE_SET_RESPONSE_ERROR_STATUS shows ModuleName="BasicAuthenticationModule", Notification="AUTHENTICATE_REQUEST", HttpStatus="401", HttpReason="Unauthorized", HttpSubStatus="1", ErrorCode="Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. (0x8007052e)", ConfigExceptionInfo="" And one more thing - if I use my domain login\password it woks! Basic Authentications is only enabled authentication in application...   I have a module in my system that will trigger an email and send it to user. The email will be sent to user when the product in my system is going to expired soon. I test the whole module in localhost and there is no problem with it. Just need to add, this is because we generate reports server-side and make them available in a number of downloadable formats (Excel, PDF etc), hence the need to have the fonts installed on the server. I have console access to our webfarm, and from the server I've copied the .ttf files and placed them in c:\fonts folder. Then I run the following VBScript on the server. What do I need to do to install fonts on Windows Web Server 2008 R2?

• Preventing Windows version of Vim from destroying other file systems permissions

  I am currently using the windows version of gVim to edit source files on a networked drive mapped to a linux system, as well as local files created in cygwin. The problem is that the windows version of gVim destroys the original file permissions on the respective systems. IE: Files on cygwin are defaulted to 077. When edited by the windows version of vim they are saved as 777.This problem doesn't even occur when using ms-notepad (as well as all other editors I've tried), so I am not quite sure why gVim does it. A possible solution would be to use cygwin's gVim for everything, but that's rather cumbersome as it requires running an x11 environment to support it, and it causes some problems when running some commands from within gVim (or vim for that matter) when working on the networked drive. Any ideas how I might be able to maintain the existing file permissions? Edit: This morning while on a different machine the problem with cygwin did not occur. Cygwin & gVim were the same version, however the other machine is running WinXP while the machine the problem is occurring on runs Win7.

  I have just installed the DuckDuckGo add-on in Firefox 11.0, running on XP SP 3. I would like to add additional parameters to the query string. However, any changes I make are not reflected in the query string when doing a search. I found the duckduckgo.xml file at C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Profile Name.default\searchplugins. • Deploying a Git server in a AWS linux instance

  I'm making a git server on my linux instance in AWS. I tried doing it using these instructions but in the end I always get stuck with a "Permission denied (publickey)" message. So here is my detailed steps, the client is my windows machine running mysysgit and the server is the AWS ubuntu instance : 1) I created user Git with a simple password. 2) Created the ssh directory in ~/.ssh 3) On the client I created ssh keys using ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 1024, they got dropped in my /Users/[Name]/.ssh directory, id_rsa and id_rsa.pub key pair was created. 4) Using notepad I copy pasted the text into newly created files on the server in the ~/.ssh directory of my Git user. ~/.ssh/id_rsa and **~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub** were copied. 5) On the server I made the authorized_hosts file using "cat id_rsa.pub authorized_hosts" (while inside the .ssh directory) 6) Now to test it, on my client machine I did ssh -v git@[ip.address] 7) Result : debug1: Host 'ip.address' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/known_hosts:1 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Offering public key: /c/Users/[Name]/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: No more authentication methods to try. • Strange corruption saving from Textpad 5 within Windows 7-64 VirtualBox VM to shared folder with Mac host

  I have a fairly new Window-7 64bit install running in Virtual Box on a MacBook Pro. I'm using TextPad 5 within that environment to edit source files that live on a shared folder that is on the Mac Host. When I save some of these source files, the saved file ends up with some amount of the end of the file repeated one or more times. For example, a file that has this at the end: ... return ttp; }; would, once saved, open up with: ... return ttp; }; }; It is definitely a problem with how the file gets written as opposed to how it's read, because I can see this now matter what app I use to open the file with (NotePad & Word in Windows 7, TextWrangler back in the Mac). I've tried saving as ANSI and UTF-8, and with or without the 'Write Unicode and UTF-8 BOM' checked in TextPad preferences. It doesn't happen with all files though I can't see any pattern about which files do or don't have the problem. It doesn't happen with files written to the Windows 7 c:\ drive. And so far it doesn't happen from other applications saving files, only TextPad. Any ideas? My versions: Textpad 5.4.2 Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, fully up to date VirtualBox 4.0.8 r71778 OSX 10.6.7

• Windows 7 "freezes" (chills?), and then "unfreezes" after about 1 minute.

  Hi, I have an Acer Timeline 1810T netbook (4GB RAM) with Windows 7 x64. About once or twice a day, it "freezes" - the reason I put this in quotation marks is that it does not really freeze, as I you cant move mouse, etc. I can move my mouse and jump between different applications, but I cant use the applications for anything. So I can jump between notepad and Firefox, but I cant browse to a new web page. I have been trying to determine the source of this misery for a while now, and I suspect it has something to do with the hard drive - indirectly if not directly. Here are some screen shots of the resource monitor during a "freeze" and during normal operation: Freeze: http://imgur.com/Gcgq1.jpg Normal operation: imgur.com/mlHaI.jpg As you can see, CPU is fine during freeze, but the disk is going bananas.. Does anyone have an idea of what these reading means, or about the problem in general? There seems to be no specific activity that sets this off - it can be during browsing, or during media playback with nothing else open. The fact that I can see navigate to applications but not use them might suggest a hard drive problem as well? Maybe I can access the stuff that is in RAM, but not anything that would require interaction with the drive.. Very appreciative of any help!

• Networking DOS within Windows 7 XP Mode, with a Windows XP/7 Networked Share

  For awhile now, one of my clients has been stuck with Corel Paradox 4.0 (it used to be the biggest database system in the DOS days, until Microsoft released Access in the early 90's) so for awhile I've managed to keep it on life support on Windows XP for a few years, however since switching to Windows 7 x64, I've had to resort to using XP Mode as the sandbox to keep it up and running. While I am able to run Paradox as usual in XP Mode, I'm having a serious issue where if I try connecting the install to the network share (which is located on the Windows 7 portion of the system), Paradox keeps exiting because it says the serial number is invalid. Now, I know for a fact that this is an issue with the virtual loopback adapter and also having the VM linked to the physical ethernet adapter -- and while I have solved this issue before, most of my fixes have been bandages since after a few weeks the issue pops up again. Long story short, I wanted to ask if there is a permanent way to link a DOS program to a network share address. For example, when I try doing \tsclient\paradox (the Windows 7 Address) I keep getting an error saying I need a valid network address. I've tried mapping that folder to various drive letters such as P:\Paradox -- but for some reason that keeps failing over time. For what it's worth, Paradox uses a .SOM file to store the network settings, however it isn't editable in Notepad but rather it's controlled by a wizard in Paradox. But if that extension rings any bells, I'd welcome any insights.

• Windows Key is shutting my PC with Windows 7 down when pressed

  I am having a really annoying problem lately with my Windows 7 PC. The problem, is all of a sudden, just within the last day or 2, anytime I hit the WIN (Windows keyboard key) instead of popping up the start menu, the system shuts down all my programs and trys to shut down, the only reason it doesn't suceed is because one of the programs I will have running will have an un-saved document, so it will ask me if I want to save the document before shutting down, I then can hit cancel and it halts the process. I do not remember installing anything and programs from from around the time it started doing this, maybe 2-3 days ago. I have gone through and searched Google for every Process running in the taskmanager to see which processes were REQUIRED for Windows to run, I then closed eveything down and killed all the non-essential Processes and the result was this... The reason you see notepad.exe is because I had it open with an unsaved document to keep the system from shutting down, I then tried hitting the win key after I shut each process down, after everything was shut to just show the above, it still tries to shut my system down, this is driving me insane, please help I am at a lost. I am about to see if I can try a different keyboard just encase it is some malfunction on the keyboard. The reason I need to access the WIN key or would like to is because I have Win + v set up to work with a special clipboard manager I believe it is called ClipX

• Magnetic Stripe Reader over Terminal Server has random Uppercase/Lowercase nonsense

  The Magnetic Stripe Reader that I'm using and testing is just supposed to be sending keystrokes. Unfortunately, it seems to randomly be sending upper case and lower case keystrokes, sometimes substituting % for 5 and ^ for 6 and vice versa. (If you've ever programmed for a magnetic strip reader, you know that's not a good thing.) Is there something in the RDP protocol that causes this? I've got kind of a convoluted system, running XP inside virtualbox on Fedora 11 RDP'ed into a win2k3 server. It works on the XP VM and it doesn't work on the RDP'ed one. What's weirder, is that I'm not even emulating the USB drivers for my Mag Card Reader. Linux is sending keystrokes straight in to windows, and MSTSC on windows XP is sending crap to the Win2k3 server. I'm 99% certain this isn't a problem with the card reader, it has nothing to do with my programming either. (I get the same junk coming into notepad that I get coming into our software [that's why I didn't ask on SO]). And, it works with rdesktop programs other than MSTSC.exe! Needless to say, I'm in need of some RDP Guruship.

• Weird caching bug where old version of the same web page (same filename) is still called (Windows 2008 R2, Tomcat 5.5)

  This is definitely one of the strangest errors I've seen and it occurs intermittently. I am running Windows 2008 R2, IIS 7.5, and Apache Tomcat 5.5, by the way. Let's say I have two machines, A and B. Both A and B are running Windows 2008 R2. I have a web page called login.jsp on machine A, and I have a newer, modified version of login.jsp on machine B . Now, I copy the new login.jsp from machine B and paste it to machine A, replacing the older version with the same filename. For whatever reason, when I hit up the web page in my browser from a local machine (i.e. my laptop), it still recalls the old version of the web page, even though it's been replaced! I tried restarting IIS and Apache Tomcat. That didn't work. I tried restarting machine A and that didn't work. I tried a cold reboot of my local machine and that didn't work, either. So, I spoke to someone I can confide in for help. He said to open the login.jsp page in notepad, put a space in, save the file, and try again. Sure enough, it worked. He said he hasn't seen it in Windows 2003, but this is occurring with Windows 2008. What I don't understand is why did it work and what the heck is this error and I do I really diagnose it and resolve it for good, instead of the hack my colleague proposed? Is this bug related to Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, Tomcat, or something else entirely? Anyone else have the same problem? Thank you for any help.

• Some process/service/driver repeatedly presses F5

  Hi everyone, I have the strangest problem that started 2 days ago (Windows7, 64bit). SOMETHING causes my F5 key to be constantly pressed. Rebooting helps, but only for a while, it keeps coming back to that. So far I've tried to disconnect and reconnect the keyboard (physically), however, disconnecting the keyboard doesn't actually do anything. Reconnecting it back again, causes the F5-pressing to stop, but not for very long (seconds/minutes). I'd really like to avoid a binary search for the programs (process closing/keyboard switching/etc) before I can, at the very least, identify the source of the keypress. Is there an application that can show me what is causing a key press? E.g is it the keyboard driver, or some process that executes SendKey repeatedly for reasons unknown. Thanks! P.S FYI, having F5 causes the strangest side effects. Task Manager refreshes very very quickly (as F5 is refresh), the desktop is constantly flickering and all the browsers stop working as they keep trying to refresh. I was lucky to find out what the heck is happening only because I started notepad and saw that current date/time started to appear constantly. If not that, I'd still be wondering.

• Maintaining "Portability" Between Linux and Windows 7

  I am using the following ways in my office's Windows 7 machine to maintain my "portabilibity" when disaster strikes and I need to switch computer while I have no luxury of time for reinstalling all my program to the new PC. a majority of programs I used are portable, mostly from portableapp.com, like notepad+, GIMP, even R, I extract them and store them in a folder in My document, in a structure similar to the default portableapp installation when they are installed to a thumbdrive only a few software that portable version is not available and I will install them as usual all of my working files are stored in a folder in My document I regularly backup them all using syncback, because this program can keep versioning of my backup, and the backup is stored in a portable drive. One day I need to switch my computer and the operation is relative simple for me: I just move the two folders mentioned above into the my document folder of the new PC, install those few "non-portable" program in it, and this is almost done, some minor hiccups can be solved by reinstalling the portableapp into the drive. Overall speaking it is a smooth process. I would like to maintain the same degree of "portability" in my home Linux desktop (Ubuntu or Mint, I'm still deciding), that is, if my Linux crash and I need to reinstall it again. All I need to do is the move the two folder back to the new Linux, and most of my work will be almost ready to be worked on again. But I don't know how to find a Linux-alternative of portableapps. Being a newer to Linux, can anyone tell me whether this is possible in Linux?

  Hello, I can't successfully configure the apache and php configuration files, can anybody help me in this way? Apache 2.2.16 (win32-x86-no_ssl.msi) was installed into “C:\Apache2.2 “location. Then PHP 5.3.3 (VC9 x86 Thread Safe) zip file was downloaded and extracted on “C:\php” location. From “C:\php” I renamed the “php.ini-development” file into “php.ini” “php.ini” file was opened with notepad, and modified as: doc_root = "C:\Apache2.2\htdocs" extension_dir = "C:\php\ext" The following lines were added to the Apache's configuration file “httpd.conf”: LoadModule php5_module "C:/php/php5apache2_2.dll" AddType application/x-httpd-php .php PHPIniDir "C:/php" N.B.: Thanks all for comments and answer, but I can't reply none your comments, I don't know why. • How do I keep the keyword.url setting in firefox to default when you restart the browser without del

  I am on the latest version of Firefox (not beta or anything like that) and currently my keyword.url is stuck on search.google.com (which I don't remember setting even though the about:config says it's a user setting. Can someone tell me how to set it back to default and keep it at default when I reset my browser? I do not want to delete prefs.js as I do not want to go thru setting up all the extension settings I have just to have my location bar search google (if this is the only way then I'll stick with searching from the search bar instead). I've checked all my extensions that may effect the location bar but could not find anything that says it would change the default search engine for this. I've also tried to open the prefs.js in wordpad or notepad but it just ends up freezing when trying to edit it at all (yes the browser is closed at the time). I also deleted the prefs-1.js (along with 2 others) that were older (after trying to rename those to prefs.js and see if this corrects it. It might have but had such old extension settings I went back to my latest prefs.js with this one issue instead of the issue of setting back up a ton of extensions. I can give any other info if needed, someone please help me fix this issue if possible.

It contains an amusing quote that I want to copy and paste to my blog. I used the mouse to select the text of the quote and pressed CTRL + C to copy the text. • What's needed in a complete ASP.NET environment?

  We have a ASP3.0 application with a few ASP.NET (2.0) dittys mixed in. (Our longtime goal is to migrate everything to ASP.NET but that's not important for this issue) Our current test/deploy workflow is like this: 1 Use notepad++ or VS2008 to fix a bug/feature (depending on what I have open) 2 Open my virtual test-server 3 Copy the fixed file over, either with explorer, or if I can be bothered to open it, WinMerge 4 Test that the fix works 5 Close the virtual test-server 6 Connect to our host with VPN 7 Use WinMerge to update the files necessary 8 Pray to higher powers that the production environment is not so different that something bombs. To make things worse, only I have access to my "test-server". So I'm the only one testing it. I really want to make this a bit more robust, I even have a subversion setup running. But I always forget to commit changes... And I don't even work in my checked out folder, but a copy of what is currently in production... Can someone recommend some good reading on deploying, testing, staging and stuff like that. I currently use VS2008 and want to use subversion or GIT (or any other free VCS). Since I'm the only developer, teamsystem is not really an option (cost-related). I have found myself developing an "improved" feature, only to find a bug in the same feature in the production system. And since my "improved" feature incorporated deleting some old functionality, I have to fix bugs directly in production... That's not a fun feeling... (I have inherited this system recently... So it's not directly my fault that it is like this ;) )

• Server 2008 Print Redirection is failing but only on 16Bit apps

  the main programmer for SoEasyAccounting and we are installing to Server 2008 Standard service pack 1. We install to 2003 with no problems. Important to understand that the print failure only happens in certain circumstances: Note: We use a standard Windows printer selection box to choose the printer Terms used Superbase = a program language that uses ntvdm.exe (Windows process hosting 16 bit apps) Local Printer = printing to a driver loaded onto the Server 2008 Redirect Printer = printing to a automatically established remote printer through an RDP connection Printing Scenarios Server 2008 - 1: Print from notepad to a Redirected Printer = works Server 2008 - 2: Print from Superbase to a Local Printer = works Server 2008 - 3: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = fail Server 2003 - 4: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = works Results The print causes a message in the drivers print queue of Local Downlevel Document, no print though and Superbase recognises that the "Print command failed". Eventvwr has no related issues to the print fail Any help greatly appreciated. So far 2 days spent trying to resolve and here goes my weekend :( unless someone has an idea :) Things I have Tried i. • How does Windows 7 taskbar "color hot-tracking" feature calculate the colour to use?

  This has intrigued me for quite some time. Does anyone know the algorithm Windows 7 Aero uses to determine the colour to use as the hot-tracking hover highlight on taskbar buttons for currently-running apps? It is definitely based on the icon of the app, but I can't see a specific pattern of where it's getting the colour value from. It doesn't seem to be any of the following: An average colour value from the entire icon, otherwise you would get brown all the time with multi-coloured icons like Chrome. The colour used the most in the image, otherwise you'd get yellow for the SQL Server Management Studio icon (6th from left). Also, the Chrome icon used red, green and yellow in equal measure. A colour located at certain pixel coordinates within the icon, because Chrome is red -indicating the top of the icon - and Notepad++ (2nd from right) is green - indicating the bottom of the icon. I asked this question on ux.stackoverflow.com and it got closed as off-topic, but someone answered with the following: As described by Raymond Chen in this MSDN blog article: Some people ask how it's done. It's really nothing special. The code just looks for the predominant color in the icon. (And, since visual designers are sticklers for this sort of thing, black, white, and shades of gray are not considered "colors" for the purpose of this calculation.) However I wasn't really satisfied with that answer because it doesn't explain how the "predominant" colour is calculated. Surely on the SQL Management Studio icon, the predominant colour, to my eyes at least, is yellow. Yet the highlight is green. I want to know, specifically, what the algorithm is.

• Strange RDP / Remote Desktop problem

  I'll try to be as specific as I can be: Server is running SBS 2008 R2 (with all updates) Server is connected to the internet Server has 2 NIC's, one is disabled Server is running RDP Service (accessible directly from the internet, I know, not as secure as it should be) Computers A and B are on the same local net. Computers A and B are both Windows 7. Users X and Y are both admins on the server Computer A can connect as user X to the server with mstsc Computer A can connect as user Y to the server with mstsc Computer B can connect as user X to the server with mstsc Computer B CANNOT connect as user Y to the server with mstsc! Error that username/password is incorrect. The last point is the problem, I get an authentication error. This used to work flawlessly for the last year. The server and desktops have been rebooted. EDIT: I tried: prefixing domain to the username prefixing the server computer name to the username change the password copy/paste the password from notepad to make sure it was correct I find it very strange.... EDIT: The computers are not on the same subnet as the server. The server is at my hosting provider. All computers as all users can reach the web app that is running on the server.

  Small business server 2011 standard - applications randomly closing for remote desktop users I have an issue where when you are connected through remote desktop (doesn't matter whether you have administrative rights or not). I have performed a virus scan on the server which did originally pick up 5 viruses: riskware.tool.ck -> File riskware.tool.ck - > Memory Process trojan.agent.bdavgen -> File trojan.agent -> File HiJack.comsysapp -> Registry Data But after removing these and rebooting the machine we have had no luck Has anyone else ever come across this issue before? Also to elaborate it is happening as frequently as every minute.

• Permanent fix for unicode characters not displaying correctly (as boxes)

  Please read this entire message before replying. First I know how to fix the issue on a temporary basis. I am looking for a permanent fix. I work with foreign language files a lot. Unfortunately sometimes all the unicode characters in windows explorer, notepad, and other places (as rendered by windows, probably GDI) do not display correctly. That is they display as square blocks, where as they had just been displaying correctly. There are countless methods to temporarily correct the issue. But again, I want a way to permanently resolve the issue. What I have tried: The silly "Hide fonts based on language settings". This setting only applies to what fonts you see in the fonts folder and font dropdowns. It doesn't disable foreign fonts (doesn't work, or if it does, it is temporary). Deleting the font cache file and rebooting (works.. usually, temporary solution). Changing my locale and then back (sometimes works, temporary solution). Rebooting my PC and getting lucky (50-50 chance, temporary solution). Changing my keyboard input/adding foreign keyboard (temporary solution that only seems to work once). Reinstalling windows (temporary solution, sometimes lasts a few months though, I have done this 7 times across 3 computers) What I have not tried: Buying Windows Ultimate and installing the interface packs. This is not a solution. I can't read Japanese/Chinese and I do not want my interface in those languages. What I will not do: Switch to a different brand operating system (unix, linux, mac os x) Switch to an older version of windows (Windows Vista, XP, 2000, etc). So can anyone recommend a permanent fix for the problem?
