• How to troubleshoot down terminal service/CITRIX sessions, when the process just won't terminate?

  Running a CITRIX presentation server farm, version 4.5.6 on Windows 2003 sp2. In the CITRIX Access Management Console, I sometimes get a session that shows it's in a down state - but has none of the normal info associated with it (user name, applications, client name, idle time, etc...). It does say which servers it's on, so I check out that server's terminal services manager. I can see the down session but cannot reset it. I get: (Error 7024 - the requested operation cannot be completed because the terminal connection is currently busy processing a connect, disconnect, reset, or delete operation.) So I go to the task manager and look up the processes running under that session id. I see it's one of my published apps, but when I try to end the process - it simply does nothing and the process remains. Any way to get rid of these sessions without a server reboot?

• How to have supervisord follows the new unicorn process after USR2 rolling restart?

  I have configured supervisord to track my unicorn server process. When I send USR2 process, this performs a rolling restart. After this operation the old unicorn master have restarted and then changed PID. This caused supervisor to lose track of the unicorn process considering it as EXITED. How can I have supervisord to follow the new unicorn process after this operation ? Unicorn has a PID file available, but I have not found an option in supervisord configuration for this. An other option would be to have supervisord to send itself the USR2 signal, but I don't know how to perform this and whether it will prevent my problem from occurring.

• Can't delete a directory on external drive (OS X)

  I have a brand new Transcend StoreJet 25M3 (external HDD) mounted to MacBook (Leopard 10.5.8) at /Volumes/Transcend. I copied some data from my old Windows (XP) machine on it, and now, after cleaning some stuff up, I wanted to delete some directories, but this is what happened: $ rmdir My\ Pictures/ rmdir: My Pictures/: Operation not permitted Using Finder just asks for password, but does not delete the directory (sound of "moved to Trash" is played). I thought it's some permission "thing", but: $ ls -l drwxrwxrwx 1 martin staff 32768 5 jan 16:11 My Pictures/ $ sudo rm -rf My\ Pictures rm: My Pictures: Operation not permitted I re-mounted, rebooted (thinking that there's some file lock), but that did not help. What might have happened here? How to delete it?

• Kanji characters appear as boxes

  i'm having trouble with the display of japanese characters on Windows 8 Pro (English, 64-bit, updated regularly). They appear as boxes (picture) in windows explorer, windows menus (even in the language settings of control panel), iTunes and nearly everywhere else, besides web browsers. I was using windows 7 until now, and it didn't have any of these problems, and i'm using the same applications now, as i was using in windows 7. Sometimes (!) when i restart the machine the problem goes away, but that isn't a real solution. What i've tried so far: added japanese language to windows of course installed/uninstalled/reinstalled japanase language pack (didn't have any impact though) i've read in one of these superuser topics a possible solution, when i had to create a txt file on the desktop with a kanji in the filename - that also didn't work (but i honestly hope that hacking and tweaking an operation system released in 2012 can't be the solution to display kanjis..) Please give me any ideas, i'm a bit hopeless here, and don't want to spend my life installing operation systems..

• OS Missing? Messed up the MBR on Win7 64-bit

  I have a Windows 7 machine with two hard drives: a 1TB C: drive and 500GB J:. I had Windows XP installed on C: and Windows 7 installed on J:. I installed Windows 7 after Windows XP from an installer .exe I (legally) bought and downloaded. It, and all of my other files, are sitting on my J: drive intact. While under my Windows 7 install, a few days ago I decided to use Priform's CCleaner and use its DriveWipe utility to wipe the C: drive. 1% into the process, I cancelled and attempted to use it again. It gives me an error saying it can't format the drive, so I poke around the Internet a bit, give up, and restart my computer. I first get an "OS is missing" error after the computer boots past the BIOS. I downloaded and put UBCD on a bootable USB to use another drivewiping tool to completely erase the C: drive, hoping it'll take the problem with it. No luck. I try to use TestDisk to make my J: my primary active drive, but no luck. I still get the "OS is missing" error. Or sometimes it'll hang at Verifying DMI Pool. Or sometimes I'll get the "NTLDR is missing" error. I get hold of Hiren's and put it on another bootable USB. I first I tried the Boot Windows 7 from Hard Drive option, and I get "Error 15: File Not Found". I tried the "Fix 'NTLDR is Missing'" option (I'm not quite sure why this is even showing up, since I'm trying to get into a HDD with Windows 7 installed. Probably messed up somewhere when I used TestDisk) and I get this list: I'll run through the error messages I get: 1st Try - Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll 2nd Try - Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \system32\ntoskrnl.exe 3rd Try - Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. 4th - 8th Try - Same as #3 9th Try - I/O Error accessing boot sector file multi(0)disk(0)fdisk(0)\BOOTSEC.DOS. And computer freezes. 10th Try - computer restarts Needless to say, not a single one of those works. I then tried to open up the Windows 7 exe I have sitting on my J: from the Mini-XP OS on Hiren's, but it won't run because I'm trying to run a 64-bit file from a 32-bit exe. At least, that's the problem according to these guys: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...-b2f54e9c7d18/ I then borrowed a 64-bit Windows Home Premium CD from a friend to get to the recovery options. But I get the error message: This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows. I pressed Shift + F10 to get to the Command Prompt directly. These are the exact steps I took from there (paraphrased a little): X:\Sources>bootrec /Fixmbr The operation completed successfully. X:\Sources>bootrec /Fixboot The operation completed successfully. I restarted my computer, but it still didn't work. • How can I run msiexec from cygwin to unpack a msi?

  I need to unpack (not execute, unpack) a msi in a cygwin makefile. If I invoke from the windows command prompt the following msiexec /a package.msi /qn TARGETDIR=C:\foo The package is correctly deployed in C:\foo. However, if I try to perform the exact same operation from the cygwin prompt msiexec /a package.msi /qn TARGETDIR=C:\\foobaz All I get is the msiexec window stating the usage. I can solve this problem in two ways, either running successfully msiexec as above, or by starting a windows command from the makefile, and have it invoke that operation. Any ideas?

• How to put several files in one archive?

  I have 10 files which I need to send per e-mail. It is inconvenient for me all 10 files and it will be inconvenient for the receiver to download all 10 files (it can be annoying to do the same operation 10 times). I would like to put all 10 files into one files (I think it can be done as archive). How can I do it? Important details. I am working in the Windows 7 and prefer to do the mentioned operation from the command line. In the directory, where I have my 10 files, I have many other files which I would not like to include into the archive. The files are small, so compression rate and size do not play any role. I just one to have an easy way to put 10 files into one and then easily to extract these 10 files.

  I've been using a combination of sp_getapplock and sp_releaseapplock for some custom application locking purposes for years now with success and just the last few days I've started to get some timeout expired errors on a sp_releaseapplock which is a bit puzzling. When listing the current locks, there's less than a dozen of these active, and the rest of the dedicated server is way underutilized at the moment (less than 100 batches/sec with a mutli-processor, 32GB Ram, higher end machine.) Is there a specific resource to be monitored that may point me in the right direction for determing why such a lightweight operation is timing out? This is called within a stored proc with a timeout of 120 seconds which seems to be amazingly long for this operation to timeout on. SQL 2000 SP4 running on Windows 2003 Server.   I'm gonna sketch my understanding of both. I've googled around but i'm not sure about my knowledge. Please correct me! Hardware interrupt is generated by the operation system event scheduler to reassign the cpu time for another process. Is this true? Software interrupt can be generated from a running program who wants for example to read a file, and for that we need to reassign the cpu for the appropriate operation system call. Is this true? Is there other kind of software/hardware interrupts?

• PC is randomly shutting off

  I have a PC which is randomly shutting off (the hard way, like someone pulled the plug). It's no heat problem, because this can happen after 2 minutes of operation or after 4 hours and I checked the temperature. It's also no problem of the operation system, because it will also do that while in BIOS. If it happens once, you can be sure that it will happen within the next hour another two or three times, and then it works again for over a week or even longer. Possible causes I've thought about so far are: Voltage Fluctuation Loose contact (already replugged all cables within the PC, no luck) Faulty PSU Maybe someone has more ideas to this? P.s.: I don't have the hardware specs with me right now, I'll post them as soon as I get them.

• Do I need to run a verfication on LTO tape backups even though the drives themselves perform verification as they write?

  We have an LTO-3 Tape drive in a Dell media library that we use for our tape backups. The article about LTO on Wikipedia states that: LTO uses an automatic verify-after-write technology to immediately check the data as it is being written, but some backup systems explicitly perform a completely separate tape reading operation to verify the tape was written correctly. This separate verify operation doubles the number of end-to-end passes for each scheduled backup, and reduces the tape life by half. What I would like to know is, do I need my backup software (Backup Exec in this case) to perform a verify on these tapes or is the verify-after-write technology inherent in LTO drives sufficient? I would also be curious if Backup Exec understands the verify-after-write technology enough to alert me if that technology couldn't veryify the data or will it just ignore it making it useless anyway since even if the drive detecs a problem I would never know about it.

• Seeking a solution to automatically copy files from the cd-rom disk to the USB drive once it's connected.

  I plan to distribute a free CD that automatically copies files to a connected usb device. This process will be done on the computers of the users that obtain the cd. The CD will contain an autorun.ini file that will instruct the computer to copy a set of files located on the cd..to a specific directory on the connected usb device. The usb drive letter is not the same on all the systems, therefore...Windows XP should automatically know the drive letter of the usb device before the copy operation begins. What would be the best way of creating a short batch file or script that I can place on the CD to execute this process? Also, please note that it is NOT feasible or recommended to include a batch file on the USB devices to sync this operation due to the explanation at the beginning of this paragraph. :) Thank You All

• Oracle Logical Standby redo generation

  Oracle 10.2.0.4 database with a logical standby on Win2K3. Recently a rather large delete operation was carried out on the production instance. I'm experiencing difficulty with the logical standby, in that it gets a couple of hundred (58M size) archive logs into the operation and the apply process fails with an out-of-memory error. Unfortunately, every time it fails it has to restart the apply from the beginning of the transaction. This is taking a couple of days each time. Anyway, in trying to resolve this problem, I've noticed that each archive log from the production system generates 5 or 6 log switches on the standby. I don't understand why this should be. Anyone have any ideas? A related question that I've not found the answer for: does anyone know if the logical standby must be running in archivelog mode? I really don't have a need to keep the logs.

• CMD file time not always matching windows explorer file time

  I have a set of file I need to set the created, modified and last access date to exif date taken value, after a copy between 2 folders (might be fat32 on memory card or ntfs on fixed or usb disk). When I copy a file, the date and time switch to the current date. Then I change all 3 dates manually, either with change attributes in windows explorer or far manager on the command line. To make it faster I wrote a batch script getting original file dates (with php and function stat), building a batch script that invoke nircmd setfiletime for each file. Then I apply this batch to the copied version. The operation is relatively fast and reliable. Unfortunately, a bunch of files have last access and created time different in cmd and windows explorer (1H difference). Very strangely, it happens with dates between november and february, which make the operation unreliable. Why is this happening, and how can I fix it?

  From the mutt manual: Once you have tagged the desired messages, you can use the tag-prefix operator, which is the ; (semicolon) key by default. When the tag-prefix operator is used, the next operation will be applied to all tagged messages if that operation can be used in that manner. But it seems that I can only execute commands that are already bound to a specific keyboard shortcut. For example I can use ;d to delete all selected messages. What if I want to apply an "unbound" command (such as purge-message)? I have also tried using something based on :exec tag-prefix or :push tag-prefix without success.

• I suspect that my HDD is causing hardlocks, as all other components have been replaced. How can I check this theory and solve the potential cause?

  I have had this problem over quite a while now, thorough multiple Linux kernel versions and distributions, as well as replacement of all components, aside from my main HDD - RAM, GPU(twice), mother board, CPU, power supply. What happens is, at one point during the operation of the PC, it will hardlock - everything stops working, external HDD is not shut down correctly and continues to spin until I plug it out and in, there are no system/kernel logs of any kind, and no otherwise nothing that would suggest a cause. Another reason for my suspicion is that the failures happen almost exclusively during HDD read/write activity - shutdown(happens nearly 1/3 of the time so far, it's only been few days though), launching programs, and once during operation of apt. I hope the post is descriptive enough, if you need any additional info, ask(and tell me how to prepare/obtain it), and I will provide. If I'm wrong, point me in the right direction.
