• Socket programming question

  I am given the following declaration: char inbuff[500], *ptr; int n, bufferlen; Write a program segement to receive a message having 500 bits from the TCP socket sock and store this message in inbuff. My answer is: n = recv( sock, inbuff, strlen( inbuff ), 0 ); However, I am not sure why *ptr is given in the declaration. So, I would like ask, what is the purpose of the pointer in this question?? • Database Design Question

  Hi, I am designing a database for a project. I have a table that has 10 columns, most of them are used whenever the table is accessed, and I need to add 3 more rows; View Count Thumbs Up (count) Thumbs Down (Count) which will be used on %90 of the queries when the table is accessed. So, my question is that whether it is better to break the table up and create new table which will have these 3 columns + Foreign ID, or just make it 13 columns and use no joins? Since these columns will be used frequently, I guess adding 3 more columns is better, but if I need to create 10 more columns which will be used %90 of the time, should I add them as well, or create a new table and use joins? I am not sure when to break the table if the columns are used very frequently. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance,

• Beginner Java Question about Integer.parseInt() and casting

  so when casting like in the statement below :- int randomNumber=(int) (Math.random()*5) it causes the random no. generated to get converted into an int.. Also there's this method I just came across Integer.parseInt() which does the same ! i.e return an integer Why two different ways to make a value an int ? Also I made a search and it says parseInt() takes string as an argument.. So does this mean that parseInt() is ONLY to convert String into integer ? What about this casting then (int) ?? Can we use this to convert a string to an int too ? sorry if it sounds like a dumb question..I am just confused and trying to understand Help ?

  All, I have a PHP website written in Zend Framework and MVC. Most of the controller actions check if the request is an Ajax request or not, else they redirect the user to home page. I am thinking about various ways to break that site. I am considering the following scenario: A user creates his own PHP project on his Local machine. User writes a JQuery ajax post request to one of the controllers on my site and tries to post malicious info. Ex: $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: "https://marketsite/getinfo/getstuff", cache: false, dataType: "html", success: function(html_response){ alert(html_response); }, error: function(xhr,ajaxOptions,errorThrown){ alert(errorThrown); } }); My Question is does "url" attribute in the ajax request above take absolute path? I know it takes relative path. Also, is it possible to break any site by sending such requests? Thanks

• Basic PHP question for Drupal Views theming

  My PHP and programming knowledge is extremely basic, so this is probably a dumb question: I am theming a View in Drupal 6, and I want to add an id with a consecutive number to each item in the view (first item would have the id #item1, the second #item2, etc). I am customizing the style output (views-view-unformatted--MYVIEWNAME.tpl.php) and the row style output (views-view-fields--MYVIEWNAME.tpl.php), and I want to add a counter variable in the foreach loop in the style output tpl, and then use that variable in the row style output tpl, but the last one is not recognizing the variable. It does not give me any errors, but doesnt print the number. I understand this has probably something to do with variables visibility, how can I declare the counter variable in the style .tpl so I can the use it in the row style .tpl? Thank you

  I am programming an instant messaging library for MSN Messenger, and I have a simple question about raising events. When logging in, should I be raising UserAdded for each user that is synchronized (already on the contact list), or should the UserAdded event be reserved for when a new user has been added to the contact list via the AddUser method? Should I perhaps use another event, UserDownloaded for when a user is downloaded? Similarly, when I call logout, should I call UserRemoved? I hope this makes sense. Thank you

• gcc architecture question

  Hi, I'm compiling my program with architecture set to -mtune=i386 However, I'm also linking statically against several libs (libpng, zlib, jpeglib, vorbisfile, libogg). I've built these libs on my own using configure and make, so I guess these libs were built with architecture being set to my system's architecture which would be i686. But I don't want that! I want my program to run on i386, too, so I need to make sure that all these libs that I'm statically linking against are built for i386, too. So my question: Is there a convenient way to build libpng/zlib/jpeglib/vorbisfile/libogg etc. for i386 or do I have to modify all of their makefiles manually and make sure that -mtune is set to i386?   I have a base repository class which contains all the common repository methods (as generic): public abstract class BaseRepository<T, IdType> : IBaseRepository<T, IdType> My repositories from this base e.g.: public class UserRepository : BaseRepository<User, int>, IUserRepository I also have a base controller class containing common actions, and inherit from this in controllers. The repository is injected into this by DI. E.g. public class UserController : BaseController<User> { private readonly IUserRepository userRepository; public UserController (IUserRepository userRepository) { this.userRepository= userRepository; } My question is this: The base controller needs to be able to access the repository methods that are defined in the base repository. However I'm passing in via DI a different repository type for each controller (even though they all inherrit from the base repository). How can the base controller somehow access the repository that is passed in (regardless of what type it is), so that it can access the common base methods?

  Hi, I'm moving to a pure as3 environment into flex and I have a question about preloaders. For one of my apps in particular when the swf loaded I would add a screen with an animated preloader. Then at a particular point in my code when I know all of my xml has been parsed, UI built and all initiliztion done I dispatch a "done" event which removes the preloader. How can I achieve this is flex? I've only ever really seen flex preloaders that are percentage based which I believe represent the actual loading of the swf itself?

  Hi, I'm getting these little diamonds with question marks in them in my HTML attributes when I present data from my database. I'm using EPiServer and a few custom properties. This is the information I've gathered, I save my data as a XML document, since I use custom EPiServer properties which need more than one defined value. This is saved as UTF8. It's only attributes in element tags which have this problem, such as align=left becomes align=?left?. There is no " character there, but I get the diamonds anyway. If I use " outside an element, it works and shows correctly. Any clues?

All of these (at least that I had found) tell how to use it without much explanation why and how it works. The standard code sample is: lock.EnterUpgradeableReadLock(); try { if (test if write is required) { lock.EnterWriteLock(); try { change the resourse here. } finally { lock.ExitWriteLock(); } } } finally { lock.ExitUpgradeableReadLock(); } The question is: if upgradeable lock permits only a single thread to enter its section, why I should call EnterWriteLock method within? What will happen if I don't? Or what will happen if instead of EnterUpgradeableReadLock I will call EnterWriteLock and will write to a resource without using upgradeable lock at all?

  I've got a class that wraps around an NSMutableSet object, and I have an instance method that adds objects (using the addObject: method) to the NSMutableSet. This works well, but I'm smelling a performance hitch because inside the method i'm explicitly calling containsObject: before adding the object to the set. Three part question: Do I need to be calling containsObject: before I add an object to the set? If so, then what actual method should I be using, containsObject or containsObjectIdenticalTo:? If that is not so, what contains method gets invoked under the hood of addObject:? This is important to me because if I pass an object to containsObject: it would return true, but if I pass it to containsObjectIdenticalTo: it would return false.

• Incrmenting a Cookies with PHP (Beginner Question)

  Hello, I have used sessions before but never cookies. I would like to use cookies for two reasons: 1) it's something new to learn 2) I would like to have the cookie expire in an hour or so (i know in the code example it expires in 40 sec) I am trying to write a basic if statement that if($counter=="1") { //do this second } elseif ($counter >="2") { //do this every time after the first and second } else {// this is the first action as counter is zero } Here is the code I'm using to set the cookie: // if cookie doesnt exsist, set the default if(!isset($_COOKIE["counter_cookie"])) { $counter = setcookie("counter_cookie", 0 ,time()+40); } // increment it $counter++; // save it setcookie("counter_cookie", $counter,time()+40); $counter = $_COOKIE["counter_cookie"]; The problem is that the counter will be set from 0 to 1 but won't be set from 1 to 2 and so on. Any help would be great I know this is a really simple stupid question :| Thanks!

Let's say i do have this setup: public class Point { public float X; public float Y; } public class Control { protected Point m_Position = new Point(); public Position { get { return m_Position; } set { m_Position = value; } // reorganize internal structure.. reorganize(); } protected reorganize() { // do some stuff } } This is all fine, but when it comes to usage, i could write something like: Control myControl = new Control(); myControl.Position.X = 1.0f; The thing is, my Control class wont recognize that the Position has been changed because set hasn't been called.   In theory I would like to produce 2 projects: 1) Asp.net (Sever A) 2) DAL running (Server B) I would like to utilise command objects to comunicate with the DAL. ASP.net instantiates a command class e.g. CmdGetAllUsers which impliments IMyCommand interface and sends it to the DAL (using ASMX or WCF). My question is: Would the class definition of CmdGetAllUsers need to exist on the DAL server? Or would having the interface definition be enough? My goal is to reduce the need to redeploy the DAL code, and have it as a fairly simple pass-through layer. Many thanks for your time.

• ClearCase UCM Mainline Configuration Management Pattern Question

  A configuration management pattern question (using Rational ClearCase UCM) When I use the mainline approach I create new releases by: - create release 1 from mainline - on a certain moment baseline release 1, deliver release 1 to mainline - create release 2 from mainline - on a certain moment baseline release 2, deliver release 2 to mainline - create release 3 from mainline - etc... Works very nice because the pathname is /main/release 3/latest instead of /main/release 1/release 2/release 3/latest etc... However... when in release 1 are new elements that have to be propagated to later releases I can not use the mainline since the mainline is already on e.g. release 4. The only thing I can do is deliver/merge from release 1 directly to release 2. The bad thing is that the pathname then becomes /main/release 1/release 2/latest for that files (and possibly later releases). That is I think not in line with the mainline approach. What am I doing wrong?

  Reading a book I have found the following statement: (Object) Behaviors answer either of two questions: What does this object do (for me)? or What can I do to this object? In the case of an orange, it doesn’t do a whole lot, but we can do things to it. One behavior is that it can be eaten. In my understanding of object behaviour the statement above is correct regarding the first question and is incorrect in case of the second. However, I often see classes with methods like Orange::eat(), and this makes me uncertain about my design skills. So I would like to ask is it a design mistake to give oranges a behaviour eat? (oranges and eat are used just for example)

  I searched but couldn't find an answer to this seemingly easy question, so... Suppose I have a loop in which I need to set callbacks. My callback function looks like this: function callback(var1) { // code } Now my loop is something like this: for( //condition) { var x = something_different_each_time; document.getElementById('foo').addEventListener('click', function() { callback(x); }, false); } Now it looks like even if the loop runs n times, the anonymous function is compiled only once -- and hence every invocation of callback is called with the same argument (even though x varies in the loop every time). I must be missing something here.. any help is greatly appreciated! :)

• Question about finding third party website APIs.

  I have a client that works with several well established 3rd party sites to sell his product (in this case hotel rooms, but the question is more general). Every time he gets a reservation he has to go to each site and manually make changes. I've done a quick search to see if there are APIs or any developer resources for these sites but have come up with nothing. I've emailed his contacts for each site but have yet to receive a response. I don't have a lot of experience working with third party sites like this but in the past when I've looked for APIs I usually come up empty handed. Are these types of APIs rare or am I just looking in the wrong places? It seems like an obvious thing to have for a company that has an affiliate program. Any suggestions on where to look for APIs or am I at the mercy of my "contact"?
