• Media Center - TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second

  I have a problem watching TV in Media Center. The TV constantly pauses 1/2 second then plays 1 second, pauses 1/2 second, plays 1 second - it is constant and does not vary. I know the problem is Media Center because I can use Pinnacle's TVCenterPro and there is no skipping/pausing. I was using cable, and switched to DirecTV (satellite). Trying to do "Set up TV signal" in Media Center seems to be what broke it. I get an error "IR Hardware not detected." I can use the remote to "try again" - so the IR hardware works fine (Media Center's remote/sensor). I tried plugging the IR Blaster into both ports, and I tried a different USB port for the IR receiver. I can't complete the setup. Media Center was playing it okay before I tried to run setup. • How seriously should I take ECC correctable error warnings?

  I have a pile of Sun X2200-M2 servers. These servers have ECC memory. In some of these servers, I am getting warnings in the eLOM about "correctable ECC errors detected", eg: # ssh regress11 ipmitool sel elist 1 | 05/20/2010 | 14:20:27 | Memory CPU0 DIMM2 | Correctable ECC | Asserted 2 | 05/20/2010 | 14:33:47 | Memory CPU0 DIMM2 | Correctable ECC | Asserted ...some more frequently than others. But I am thinking that if the error is Correctable, then there's no immediate issue -- I can treat this as a warning and be prepared to pull the stick/pair if an uncorrectable error starts occurring?

• Getting old bluetooth headset out of standby on Windows 7

  I think this is the problem, and if not, I'm open to suggestions. I have an old Jabra BT200 that I used to use on my phone. When a phone call was coming in it would beep using its own noises (meaning the phone never rang inside the headset) and then I could push the 'answer/hang up' button and sound and mic would start working. I have now paired it with Windows 7, and it looks good. Under the playback menu I have 'Bluetooth Hands free Audio / Jabra BT200 (Mono Audio) / Ready', and under the recording menu I have 'Bluetooth Audio Input Device / Jabra BT200 (Mono Audio) / Ready'. However when I try to test the speakers Windows sends a sound, but I never hear it, and when I talk in the mic, Windows never hears me. If I right click either the Bluetooth mic or speakers there's an option to 'Connect', but it's grayed out and I cannot click it. As the final piece of knowledge I have, my headset blinks once every 3 seconds when it's in standby and I can't get that to change. If everything was working it should blink once every second at which point I think all of my problems would be fixed. Hence my issue: I can't seem to get my headset out of standby. On my headset I've tried sending it test noises and then pressing the 'Answer' button, but still nothing. The headset beeps when I press it, so it works, it just doesn't ever come out of standby. Is there maybe some way to trick my headset into thinking it's getting a phone call from my computer?

• Alternative software for Pinnacle PCTV 100e

  I have a Pinnacle PCTV 100e external USB cable television receiver. I've been using Pinnacle's software that came with the card (TVCenter Pro) to record things at given times. Things I don't like is an extremely high CPU load, and that it doesn't seem to halt the screensaver from running when watching in full screen. Also, I was away the last two weeks, and the schedules went terribly bust. Some items were recorded hours before or after the actual scheduled time (and now I missed some shows), and some recurring schedules weren't converted into the next occurrence correctly! Is there good alternative software that would work with my PCTV 100e? (Preferalby cheap or free) I've tried VLC Player, which gets video, but no audio. I've tried MediaPortal, which crashes when trying to scan for channels. When I select a channel manually, the stored mpg has big errors in encoding and is also missing audio. There's VirtualDub, but that doesn't have ready-made scheduled-recording options. This I can conjure some scheduled scripts for, but I've noticed the sync gets awfully wrong after some time. I've tried Windows Media Center, but it doesn't seem to support the PCTV 100e.

• External USB HD with -optional- mains?

  Hi, I'm Christmas-present-buying, and I'd appreciate recommendations for a USB HD with an optional mains power input. I've hunted, but can't find all the information I want (partially due to sketchy product specifications). Background: This is for a digital TV which I do not own, and so I'd like to get it correct first time. The TV has a USB port to allow recording straight to disk, but the manuals don't say how much power can be drawn through the USB port. The manual's instructions state, possibly generically, to plug the drive in before connecting to the TV. Ideally I'd like a small (2.5"?) drive which can draw power over USB, with an mains power input if it turns out the USB port on the TV doesn't offer enough juice. The ideal is to use one cable, two max. A powered USB hub would introduce too much clutter. I've spotted that the LaCie Petit drives have what appears to be an additional power input, but I'm not even sure from the specs what that is. And the device doesn't ship with a mains adapter. Suggestions?

• Testing realistic loads for new versions of existing web app

  Assuming I have a relatively complex web application, I am interested in testing performances of a new version using a traffic as realistic as possible. Traffic is relatively complex (session-based, lots of internal logic which depends on incoming requests). The webapp depends on many servers (databases, frontends, etc...). I can think of two basic directions: Recording every incoming request with its timestamp in production in a centralized manner and replaying it from N clients to reproduce a load as close as possible as the original. Issue: because we have many servers, getting the centralized log is not trivial. having a system duplicating requests to a staging area so that I could "plug" a dev version of my webapp to it at anytime without affecting the production. Issue: I have not found much information about it expect this, which suggests to me that may not be the best solution. OTOH, it is realistic by definition. What is the standard way of doing this kind of testing ? I did not find much information about load testing with complex, realistic traffic.

• Diagnosing Microsoft SQL Server error 9001: The log for the database is not available.

  Over the weekend a website I run stopped functioning, recording the following error in the Event Viewer each time a request is made to the website: Event ID: 9001 The log for database 'database name' is not available. Check the event log for related error messages. Resolve any errors and restart the database. The website is hosted on a dedicated server, so I am able to RDP into the server and poke around. The LDF file for the database exists in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA folder, but attempting to do any work with the database from Management Studio results in a dialog box reporting the same error - 9001: The log for database is not available... This is the first time I've received this error, and I've been hosting this site (and others) on this dedicated web server for over two years now. It is my understanding that this error indicates a corrupt log file. I was able to get the website back online by Detaching the database and then restoring a backup from a couple days ago, but my concern is that this error is indicative of a more sinister problem, namely a hard drive failure. I emailed support at the web hosting company and this was their reply: There doesn't appear to be any other indications of the cause in the Event Log, so it's possible that the log was corrupted. Currently the memory's resources is at 87%, which also may have an impact but is unlikely. Can the log just "become corrupted?" My question: What are the next steps I should take to diagnose this problem? How can I determine if this is, indeed, a hardware problem? And if it is, are there any options beyond replacing the disk? Launch jmeter 2.3.3, added thred group to test plan 2. Under Workbench-add-non-test elements- added HTTP proxy server. proxy server setting are port:9090, target:use recording controller, grouping:donot group samplers, Type:HTTp request and checked the boxes of all under http sampler settings 3.Saved the settings 4. Now in browser(IE 7.0 or firefox 3.0.16), under connection settings, setup the manual proxy settings as local host and port as 9090(no auto detect settings nothing, only manual proxy). Setting saved 5.Now in the jmeter, started the http proxy server. 6. Open a browser and hit the webpage needs to be tested. The page is not opened. In fact because of the changes made in browsers, no pages are opened. Whenever i try hitting a page, the pages are recorded in the Jmeter. but without the page open, how can i test. I looking for an immediate answer and my work is blocked. Immediate answer would be appreciated.

• Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 & Windows 7 64-bit failing miserably

  I am trying to install a Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 webcam to Windows 7 64-bit. If I do it without using the Logitech drivers but instead the Windows Update ones, the camera works with low frame rate and without face tracking and all other bells and whistles that it's full driver provides. The moment I install the latest official Logitech driver, the problems begin: Camera works fine, until I decide to go to audio settings of the LWS panel or Windows'. Then LWS freezes and with it everything that tries to output audio. I am not able to open Playback/Recording devices window (it just doesn't appear) and system gets unstable and slow with LWS.EXE process not been able to close forcefully. If I reboot and forget the camera connected, this situation continues and system gets unstable from the beginning. If I reboot without the camera connected, everything works fine until I connect it and try to do something with audio settings of Windows or LWS panel. I should note, that until the freezing occurs, camera works as expected, with full frame rate, face tracking and everything that is expected to do. The soundcard is the ASUS SupremeFX II of the ASUS Striker II Extreme motherboard. Any ideas of what is causing this or what else to try so I can make it work as advertised? Thank you.

• Concatenating ogg video files from the command line

  Okay. I've got a few ogg files I've created using a desktop recording tool. I've transcoded them using ffmpeg once (mainly to clip out the beginnings and the ends). Now, I have 3 such files which I want to concatenate into a single .ogv file. I tried using oggCat, it crashed with some kind of error (I tried concatenating a file to itself using oggCat and that failed too leading me to believe that my distro is shipping a broken version of the package). Simply cating the files works but I can't seek which is not cool. mencoder run like this mencoder -ovc lavc -oac lavc file1.ogv file2.ogv file3.ogv -o complete.ogv. It transcodes the files into an avi and clips off a little of the 3 videos. So, how do I do this? Update 1: My current workaround is to transcode the 3 files into .mpg using ffmpeg, then cating them together and then transcoding them back into ogv. Update 2: PiTiVi works for this kind of thing but I need something from the command line that I can automate and script.

I have run "sfc", no problems. There are no Device Errors in Device Manager. I have also run "vssadmin list writers", no problems. Whats going on??? Would it be a good idea to re-install Windows 7?

• How can I control which sound card Ubuntu uses for playback?

  I am dual-booting Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP but am new to Ubuntu. In Windows, I use an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card for recording (because it has RCA input jacks for my mixer), but I don't use it for playback (because my speakers use a 1/8 inch jack); instead, I use the motherboard's built-in sound card. I tried to recreate this arrangement in Ubuntu, but despite selecting the built-in card for all playback under System > Preferences > Sound, I still have inconsistent results. Rhythmbox plays back through the integrated card, but Flash content in the browser and games in the OS send their audio to the Audiophile card. I have seen recommendations to use a program called "Jack" to control this, but I installed it and found it baffling. How can I control which card is used for playback, other than disabling one card (as I discovered how to do and explain below)? Also, is there a GUI for disabling hardware, or is it necessary to edit a configuration file?

• Avoid "privacy pitfalls" in Windows and Linux?

  I have a Windows and a Linux machine. In Windows, everytime I visit a site, a lot of cache/history files are created on my machine. I setup my Firefox to don't save anything. ...but Windows saves a lot of "temp" files, some strange files I opened in registry (like video names). Each video I open in VLC is shown in "Last shown videos". In windows, all files opened can be found at "Recent opened files" as well. A lot of these privacy configurations can be tweaked (VLC and "Recent opened files" in Windows) - it's a PITA doing it individually, but it's possible - but there isn't a guide to these "internal" privacy traces that are left on Windows installation. In Linux, I just know there are these problems in app level (like VLC). My question is: is there a complete guide to avoid undesirable traces of what I did/watch/used in my Windows machine? (Delete everytime the PC is restarted, or even avoiding recording these info at all) Is there a website with configuration guides to different types of software? I would like to know about Linux privacy pitfalls as well.

• Problems with 5.1 digital out on Ubuntu 12.04

  I've recently bought a new PC, installed Ubuntu and am now unable to get 5.1 digital sound working. Simple analogue stereo works fine on both the front and rear connectors. On my old box I connected the coax connection from my soundcard to my surround sound amplifier, set Settings-Sound to "Digital Stereo Duplex" and it worked. My old soundcard doesn't fit in my new machine so I'm using the built-in sound hardware. I'm connecting the combination output socket on the back of the PC via the same cable to my surround amp as before. The MB is an MSI Global H61M-P31 with an RealTek ALC887 sound chip. When I go to Settings-Sound I only see "Headphone Built-in Audio" and "Analogue Output Built-in Audio" - no digitial options. • Server Crash Diagnosis...Are there any 'black box recorder' style programs available.

  My redhat server is crashing every three weeks or so at 4:15am ish on Sunday mornings. (well it was sundays the last two have been Thursday mornings at 4:15ish) Looking at the logs (mysql, httpd, messages) there are no clues as to why. They just seem to stop. I ran a little script to take memory readings every 15 minutes and it too stops (with normal readings) at this time. The server is remote at a provider so I can only access it via the web. I use Plesk. It appears to be a set job or something that is causing the issue. I can see nothing in crontab. So my question is...has anyone else had this and can offer advice? Failing that. Does any one know of a way to get more detailed logging than that offered by the messages file? I was thinking of a black box style recording program or maybe something as simple as an option somewhere to increase the level of reporting in the messages log. Thanks

  It looks like my older brother is about to change jobs - from lawyer to shooting range proprietor - and since I'm the family 'computer guy' I have the task of coming up with and setting up the in-store equipment. Only problem, I don't know how to start or where to look. I'm a web programmer, not an IT specialist. To that end, I figured I should ask the pros. Users: 3 (myself, my brother, and his business partner) Equipment: 1 Windows (likely 7) desktop for POS software, 1 Windows desktop/laptop for backroom use (bookkeeping, etc.) Other: ?? I'm looking for a reliable and, well, idiot-proof way to handle backups. Neither my brother nor his business partner are tech savvy (A web browser, email, MS Word and Excel are about the extent of their knowledge), so I need something they can handle. On-site would be preferable to off-site, given my brother's hesitance to have sensitive business data be handled by an outside source. I'm also looking for a small on-site server. I estimate that, at most, only 2-3 users will need access. A linux solution would keep costs down, but I'm concerned about Windows <- linux interoperability. Would the store security cameras' storage be handled by the security company, or would we have to stream that data to our own server? I know from my own experience with personal security that the company gives/loans a recording device to the home owner, but I'm not sure about business security. I know this sounds like a shopping list, and it's pretty vague. I wish I could give more detail, but between my own ignorance and things not being 100% nailed down on the business end, I'm a bit stuck. At the very least I'd like a nudge - links on a place to start, what to look for, things I need to think about, etc. - for this endeavor. Thanks.

For example I want every morming at 8:00 the program open a particular mp3 file. But suposse, by mistake, that I on my computer and 9:00, then I want that the program rememberme what I planned to open at 8:00. Show me the program as an active windows on my desktop. The windows of the program opened is what the user is seeing (Is at the first place in the desktop) and the rest of the program windows are below. Close programs or files in my own computer at a planned time. For example I want that the program mp3 file that was opened at 8:00 was closed at 10:00 if at that time still be opened. Detection of events. For instance If I open particular videogame program. then a mp3 file (with a recording message arguing why I shouldn´t continue playing that videogame at work time) is opened. • What are the IR codes the new Apple Remote (alu) uses?

  I would like to clone the new Apple Remote (infrared, second generation, aluminium) just for fun with a microcontroller. Most codes of the previous model can be found in the LIRC remote control database (all except the key combinations menu + <<,play, which unpair, change ID, pair the remote. I also don't know which bit encodes the battery status. It uses a modified 32 bit NEC protocol (reverse LIRC codes bytewise). But the new Apple remote uses two additional codes for the play and the new select button. I don't have a mac, so I can't brute force test codes either ;-) So if someone possesses such a remote and the ability of recording those two new buttons and three combinations I'd really appreciate it. If you can't run LIRC (or it gets confused by the new codes) and you don't have an oscilloscope or logic analyser, maybe you could hook up a photo diode to your sound input and record the codes with Audacity? Just hit record, hit each button and combo a few times, hit stop, upload the uncompressed WAV file to a sharing site, done. That'd be great!

• How can I make sound over hdmi in kubuntu work?

  I have used a hdmi cable to connect my lcd (which is connected with my speakers) with my nvida 275 gtx grafic card. I can not get the sound output to work. The hardware itself is working probably - I tested it under windows. Currently I am running Kubuntu 9.10 64 with Nvidia 190.53. The sound output worked fine before I installed the hdmi connection. The goal is to use the webcam as a cheap security camera and log the results to secure networked storage (windows share, not FTP). I'm locked into Windows so can't use linux Motion, which looks almost perfect. Any pointers to rich Windows webcam/motion detection libraries out there that could easily be turned into a command line program would also be appreciated.

• vSphere Promiscuous mode only receiving packets one way from network switch

  We have two network switches, a POE switch (SwitchA) to power our phones / users computers and a non-POE switch (SwitchB for the rest network.) Each switch is setup to do port mirroring to support our VoIP recording system. SwitchA does port mirroring on specific ports if we need to record a user. SwitchB mirrors one port to monitor our work at home users (Internet comes in from managed router, to switch, back out to our firewall.) These two port mirroring setups feed into one vmware vSphere 4.1 server, it has four total physical cards. The other two NICs feed into an unmanaged switch for connecting to the rest of the network. Once into the vSphere server all network ports go into a vSwitch, and then one of the servers (Windows 2008 R2) sniffs them out and does its thing. Everything is working fine and dandy from SwitchB. But on SwitchA we only receive one side of the VoIP packets (going out to the phone, nothing coming in from the phone). Troubleshooting steps I have taken so far: I hooked up my laptop to the monitor port on SwitchB and I see both sides of the packets. I swapped which network interface is plugged into the monitor port on SwitchA. Because everything feeds into one vSwitch / vNetwork and both sides of the conversation arrive just fine from SwitchB I believe everything is configured correctly on the vSphere server/guest. What could be causing one way packets to arrive on my guest machine from only one interface, but not the other? Could a bad cable be causing the problems from SwitchB?
