  • Steam not displaying text on wine 1.5 running on Ubuntu 12.04

    - by Jscags
Hello fellow dwellers of askubuntu, as the title says I'm having difficulties with getting Steam to run properly. I think I have the solution but I am pretty incompetent with Ubuntu (just started using it the other day) so a step by step process would be unbelievably appreciated! Here are the links to what I think possible solutions are: [1] https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146223 [2] http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31374 I've tried googling how to preform the solutions such as changing the alias/script for steam (no idea what that is) to -no-dwrite or launching with wine Steam.exe -no-dwrite. The dwrite seems to be the issue in all this but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do anything about it. Any useful input is what I'm hoping for but for the brave soul who feels like typing a bit more, perhaps a step-by-step list of instructions starting from downloading Steam off the official website, would be my saving grace. If there is any more info you guys need let me know and I'll of course be happy to oblige!

  • Which graphics library should I be using?

    - by DaveDev
I have been developing and maintaining a WPF application, for which I've recently been tasked with adding a 3D representation of some of the data. I'm new to graphics programming in every kind of way so I'm curious whether I should stick with 3D graphics capabilities built into WPF or should I investigate other solutions, like OpenTK or SharpGL My objective is to represent the data so that it will eventually appear similar to: with nodes connected by lines. I need to rotate the image around each axis and each node will be a 3D model of the device it represents. So far, I've been able to experiment with the tutorial outlined here: Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) 3D Tutorial and it was helpful as an introduction. But I can see that there are other ways to implement 3D graphics solutions and I wonder if they are more suitable for my needs, or should I stick with the in-built WPF solution? What are the pros and cons of each?

  • New Blank Solution in Visual Studio 2010

    - by blomqvist
The option to create solutions from the file menu have not been available for several generations of Visual Studio now. But new for the 2010 version is that Visual Studio does not ask me where I want my new project and solution. It always put the in My Documents: C:\Users\db\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects If you want put your projects somewhere else, or just want a blank solution without a project. The You should open “Other Project Types/Visual Studio Solutions” where “Blank solution” is available. This is much nicer than the other way I have seen suggested other places: to create a project to get a solution and then delete the project from it.

  • Settings object with singleton pattern

    - by axis
I need to build an object that will have only one instance because this Object is dedicated to the storage of vital settings for my application and I would like to avoid a misuse of this type or a conflict at run-time. The most popular solution for this, according to the internet, is the Singleton pattern. But I would like to know about other ideas or solutions for this; also I would like to know if other solutions can be much more easy to grasp for an user of this hypothetical library. Thanks.

  • What is the best way to maintain our programming experiences? [closed]

    - by M3HD1
Possible Duplicate: how do you remember programming related stuff? During my work experiences, I always met many kind of blocking problems with different technologies. When I remember the efforts I spent to find the solutions I become frustrated and want to find a way to keep all in mind. Generally I keep all the project I made in my Hard Drive, and I usually reuse them when I encounter a problem i already encountered. But this is not to really efficient when you reopen your own code and say: Who is the sucker who wrote this code!? I'm thinking to make my own website in which I can post some tutorials / articles about the problems I met and their solutions. So I keep all in mind and help community. Do you think that it will be a good idea or just a loss of time regarding the actual programming forums?

  • How to optimize this JSON/JQuery/Javascript function in IE7/IE8?

    - by melaos
    hi guys, i'm using this function to parse this json data but i find the function to be really slow in IE7 and slightly slow in IE8. basically the first listbox generate the main product list, and upon selection of the main list, it will populate the second list. this is my data: [{"ProductCategoryId":209,"ProductCategoryName":"X-Fi","ProductSubCategoryId":668,"ProductSubCategoryName":"External Solutions","ProductId":15913,"ProductName":"Creative Xmod","ProductServiceLifeId":1},{"ProductCategoryId":209,"ProductCategoryName":"X-Fi","ProductSubCategoryId":668,"ProductSubCategoryName":"External Solutions","ProductId":15913,"ProductName":"Creative Xmod","ProductServiceLifeId":1},{"ProductCategoryId":209,"ProductCategoryName":"X-Fi","ProductSubCategoryId":668,"ProductSubCategoryName":"External Solutions","ProductId":18094,"ProductName":"Sound Blaster Wireless Receiver","ProductServiceLifeId":1},{"ProductCategoryId":209,"ProductCategoryName":"X-Fi","ProductSubCategoryId":668,"ProductSubCategoryName":"External Solutions","ProductId":16185,"ProductName":"Xdock Wireless","ProductServiceLifeId":1},{"ProductCategoryId":209,"ProductCategoryName":"X-Fi","ProductSubCategoryId":668,"ProductSubCategoryName":"External Solutions","ProductId":16186,"ProductName":"Xmod Wireless","ProductServiceLifeId":1}] and these are the functions that i'm using: //Three Product Panes function function populateMainPane() { $.getJSON('/Home/ThreePaneProductData/', function(data) { products = data; alert(JSON.stringify(products)); var prodCategory = {}; for (i = 0; i < products.length; i++) { prodCategory[products[i].ProductCategoryId] = products[i].ProductCategoryName; } //end for //take only unique product category to be used var id = 0; for (id in prodCategory) { if (prodCategory.hasOwnProperty(id)) { $(".LBox1").append("<option value='" + id + "'>" + prodCategory[id] + "</option>"); //alert(prodCategory[id]); } } var url = document.location.href; var parms = url.substring(url.indexOf("?") + 1).split("&"); for (var i = 0; i < parms.length; i++) { var parm = parms[i].split("="); if (parm[0].toLowerCase() == "pid") { $(".PanelProductReg").show(); var nProductIds = parm[1].split(","); for (var k = 0; k < nProductIds.length; k++) { var nProductId = parseInt(nProductIds[k], 10); for (var j = 0; j < products.length; j++) { if (nProductId == parseInt(products[j].ProductId, 10)) { addProductRow(nProductId, products[j].ProductName); j = products.length; } } //end for } } } }); } //end function function populateSubCategoryPane() { var subCategory = {}; for (var i = 0; i < products.length; i++) { if (products[i].ProductCategoryId == $('.LBox1').val()) subCategory[products[i].ProductSubCategoryId] = products[i].ProductSubCategoryName; } //end for //clear off the list box first $(".LBox2").html(""); var id = 0; for (id in subCategory) { if (subCategory.hasOwnProperty(id)) { $(".LBox2").append("<option value='" + id + "'>" + subCategory[id] + "</option>"); //alert(prodCategory[id]); } } } //end function is there anything i can do to optimize this or is this a known browser issue?

  • Centralized Windows/Mac Patch Management that is easy to use

    - by BiggsTRC
I'm looking for advice on what patch management solutions you would recommend based upon your experience. I'm also looking for which ones you would not recommend based upon your experience. We have a mixed network of Windows and Mac clients. Our central servers are all Windows servers, although I have considered putting in a Mac server to better handle our Mac clients. The issue we are facing currently is that we need to maintain the patches on all of our third-party applications. Right now we use WSUS, which handles with patching of Windows and some Microsoft products but that is about it. I need something to cover the other applications, specifically things like Adobe products (Reader, Flash, Dreamweaver, etc.) Our network isn't that big (maybe 200 clients) and I don't have a person to dedicate just to patching and maintaining a patch management solution. Thus very large and complicated solutions like System Center are most likely out. I have recently been looking at Dell's Kace K1000 solution (http://www.kace.com/products/systems-management-appliance/). It seems simple and it provides a lot of tools in one package that I would like/need as well. I like the fact that it is self-contained in an appliance and that it is designed for solutions like mine. However, I'm not sure if this is the best solution. I've also looked some at Shavlik's Netchk solution (http://www.shavlik.com/netchk-protect.aspx) but I don't need an anti-virus product. However, it looks like they might have a very good patch database. My question is this: What are your thoughts on these to products? Are there better products out there? Are there issues that I'm not considering? I want something that is very good at patching a broad range of products, that is simple to use, that takes a minimal amount of management (like WSUS), and that (hopefully) works with Mac and Windows.

  • Bad HD and robocopy

    - by acidzombie24
After my HD gave me crc errors I wanted to copy one drive to another and picked up a new 1TB hd. I am using the command robocopy G: J: /MIR /COPYALL /ZB First it tried copying the file a few times (i didnt count, its not in my window anymore) and got an access denied error, error 5. Then it tried again and locked up. I tried copying that specific file (14mb) and windows says "cant read from source file or disk". I started robocopy again. Hopefully it will ignore it after a fail attempt or two but what options can i use to say if it doesnt work continue to the next file. It looked like that is what it was doing but for this last one it repeated more then 4times and locked up finally. I'm open to other copy solutions. I do prefer built in solutions. I am using windows 7 Also how might i do this without the /MIR option. Is /S /E good enough? flag reference here -edit- i see i can control retries with /R: but i am still open to alternative solutions.
