• Dataset and Hierarchial Data How to Sort

  This is probably a dumb question, but I've hit a wall with this one at this current time. I have some data which is hierarchial in nature which is in an ADO.NEt dataset. The first field is the ID, the second is the Name, the third is the Parent ID. ID NAME Parent ID 1 Air Handling NULL 2 Compressor 1 3 Motor 4 4 Compressor 1 5 Motor 2 6 Controller 4 7 Controller 2 So the tree would look like the following: 1- Air Handling 4- Compressor 6 - Controller 3 - Motor 2- Compressor 7- Controller 5 - Motor What I'm trying to figure our is how to get the dataset in the same order that ths would be viewed in a treeview, which in this case is the levels at the appropriate levels for the nodes and then the children at the appropriate levels sorted by the name. It would be like binding this to a treeview and then simply working your way down the nodes to get the right order. Any links or direction would be greatly appreciated.

  I want to do something different on the last KeyValuePair of the Dictionary I'm iterating on. For Each item In collection If ItsTheLastItem DoX() Else DoY() End If Next Is this possible? Edit: As Jon correctly remarks, Dictionaries are not the kind of thing that's sorted, so I should mention that I only want to do this when displaying results to the user, and it doesn't matter if later on the last item is different. In another note, I'll use my own answer but I'll accept the most upvoted one after I check back in some hours.

• Container for database-like searches

  I'm looking for some STL, boost, or similar container to use the same way indexes are used in databases to search for record using a query like this: select * from table1 where field1 starting with 'X'; or select * from table1 where field1 like 'X%'; I thought about using std::map, but I cannot because I need to search for fields that "start with" some text, and not those that are "equal to". I could create a sorted vector or list and use binary search (breaking the set in 2 in each step by reading the element in the middle and seeing if it's more or less than 'X'), but I wonder if there is some ready-made container I could use without reinventing the wheel?

  Ok, I've hit the wall here and need some help. Sample tables are as follows: SCENARIO_NATIONS [scenID] [side] [nation] scen001 1 Germany scen001 2 Britain scen001 2 Canada SCENARIO_NEEDUNITS [scenID] [unitID] scen001 0001 scen001 0003 scen001 0107 scen001 0258 scen001 0759 UNIT_BASIC_DATA [unitID] [nation] [name] 0001 Germany Mortars 0003 Germany Infantry 0107 Britain Lt 0258 Britain Infantry 0759 Canada Kilted Yaksmen Goal: given a scenID, pull a list of units from the database sorted by side, nation, name. I can do everything except for the side inclusion with: SELECT scenario_needunits.scenID, unit_basic_data.nation, unit_basic_data.name FROM scenario_needunits LEFT OUTER JOIN unit_basic_data ON scenario_needunits.unitID=unit_basic_data.unitID WHERE scenario_needunits.scenID='scen001' ORDER BY unit_basic_data.nation ASC, unit_basic_data.name ASC I've tried just dropping the SCENARIO_NATIONS table in as a LEFT OUTER JOIN on scenID but what ends up happening is that ALL units come back with a side of 1 because that's always the first side listed for the scenID in the SCENARIO_NATIONS table. Conceptually, what I think needs to happen is SCENARIO_NATIONS must be joined to both the scenID (to restrict it to just that scenario) and to each unit's nation but I don't have any idea how to do that and my Google-fu is inadequate. :-/

• jQuery - Ajax post result in html displaying in wrong position

  I have a site with user posted threads that get voted on (up or down), and a vote count is displayed next to each thread. The voting up and down process is being done through jQuery/Ajax, and using something like this: $.ajax({ url: 'vote.php', success: function(data) { $('.result').html(data); } }); the html of the vote count is being updated (.result being the class of the div that holds the vote count number) Also, the threads are being sorted first by vote count descending, and then alphabetically. I'm having a problem with the ajax updating the HTML vote count in real time, i have a hunch that the issue is due to the fact that the order of the threads are changing when the vote count is being updated, but I'm not certain. I know the database is being updated, and when I refresh the page, it's also being updated correctly, but I'm not seeing the real-time behavior that I expect from jQuery/Ajax. What might be the problem?

• Rails, different routes for production app.

  Well, maybe not just different routes. Here is the issue at hand, we have an app that we want to present the users with a "beta sign-up" form when the app is running in production, but we still want to be able to login, however in development the app should function normally. For example in development the app's root path would be the page that show's all the products (using a store as an example) but in production we want the app to present the user with a beta page that just has a form for leaving an email, but also be able to sign-in for users that have accounts. We don't need any help with authentication, that's all sorted out more just the setup of redirecting users to the beta page in production so they can't explore the site unless they are logged in. We are using Devise so I thought maybe we could put something in our application controller that's like: before_filter :authenticate_user! if ENV['RAILS_ENV'] == 'production' But that doesn't seem like it works.

• Best datastructure for frequently queried list of objects

  Hello, I have a list of objects say, List. The Entity class has an equals method,on few attributes ( business rule ) to differentiate one Entity object from the other. The task that we usually carry out on this list is to remove all the duplicates something like this : List<Entity> noDuplicates = new ArrayList<Entity>(); for(Entity entity: lstEntities) { int indexOf = noDuplicates.indexOf(entity); if(indexOf >= 0 ) { noDuplicates.get(indexOf).merge(entity); } else { noDuplicates.add(entity); } } Now, the problem that I have been observing is that this part of the code, is slowing down considerably as soon as the list has objects more than 10000.I understand arraylist is doing a o(N) search. Is there a faster alternative, using HashMap is not an option, because the entity's uniqueness is built upon 4 of its attributes together, it would be tedious to put in the key itself into the map ? will sorted set help in faster querying ? • XSLT 1.0: Sorting by concating portions of date string

  I'm trying to take XML data and sort elements by their data attribute. Unfortunately the dates come over in mm/dd/yyyy format and are not static lengths. (Jan = 1 instead of 01) So I believe the string will have to be parsed into three components and the month padded. The newly concated value (yyyymmdd) then sorted descending. Problem is I have no idea how to do this. Right now they are all DataTables, which isn't very space efficient (the rule of thumb is 10x increase in size when data is strored in a dataset). Old Code DataTable table = dataAccess.GetDataTable(); dropDownList.DataSource = table; Hoped for new Code Unknown data = dataAccess.GetSomethingMoreSpaceEfficient(); dropDownList.DataSource = data; What pre-existing datastructures are similar enough to DataTable that would minimize code breakage and reduce the serialized size when stored in ASP.NET cache?

  Hi all, I have a sorted ArrayList of values. I would like to get the distribution of the values. For example: Say I have 500 values, ranging from 1-100. I want to break them up into groups, say 10 groups: values 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, etc... I want the counts of each of the 500 values that fall into each category. For example, 5 of the 500 are valued at 1-10, 20 between 11-20, etc... However, I do not know the ranges of values in my ArrayList, it could be ranging from 1-30 or 1-200, but I want to break it up into, for example, 10 groups. Does anyone know how to do this?

  Sorry for bad English :( Suppose i can preliminary organize recipes and ingredients data in any way. How can i effectively conduct search of recipes by user-provided ingredients, preferably sorted by max match - so, first going recipes that use maximum of provided ingridients and do not contain any other ingrs, after them recipes that uses less of provided set and still not any other ingrs, after them recipes with minimum additional requirements and so on? All i can think about is represent recipe ingridients like bitmasks, and compare required bitmask with all recipes, but it is obviously a bad way to go. And related things like Levenstein distance i don't see how to use here. I believe it should be quite common task...

  I'm a little lost as how to run two mysql queries as one(return one result set to be sorted etc). I understand how to do multiple JOINS but need to combine the below which is more than just a multiple join - it would include a multiple where etc. 1st query sql = "SELECT s.id, s.song_name FROM `songs` as s INNER JOIN `artists` as a ON s.artist_id = a.id WHERE ((`a`.id = #{search}))" 2nd query sql = "SELECT s.id, s.song_name FROM `songs` as s INNER JOIN `similarments` as si ON s.artist_id = si.artist_id WHERE ((`si`.similar_id = #{search}))" And then run both queries at once so I can ORDER them etc. Or combine them as one big query (maybe put an OR somewhere)?   I have a simple one dimmensional array of integer values that represent a physical set of part values I have to work with. I then calculate and ideal value mathematically. How could I write an efficient search algorithm that will find the smallest abosulte difference from my ideal value in the array? The array is predetermined and constant, so it can be sorted however I need. Example Lookup array: 100, 152, 256, 282, 300 Searching for an ideal value of 125 would find 100 in the array, whereas 127 would find 152. The actual lookup array will be about 250 items long and never change.

  I am probably trying to accomplish too much in a single query, but have I an sqlite database with badly formatted recipes. I figured something along these lines: UPDATE recipes SET relevance=(SELECT sum(relevance) ...) But I have not been able to get this working yet. I will keep trying, but meanwhile please let me know how you would approach this?

  Hi I am using an NSSortdescriptor to sort a collection of NSArrays, I then came across a case where the particular NSArray to be sorted contains an NSDictionary who contains an NSDictionary. I would like to sort from the string paired with a key in the last dictionary. This is how I would reference the string: NSDictionary *productDict = [MyArray objectAtIndex:index]; NSString *dealerName = [[productDict objectForKey:@"dealer"] objectForKey:@"name"]; How would I use the dealerName in my NSSortdescriptor to sort the array? • Why specifcially in my example does this "too much recursion" error occur in my JavaScript?

  I have been looking into this for a little while now. I have a gallery on my page, that uses Ariel Flesler's scrollTo plugin. It works fine on the home page, but not on the Contact page. In Firefox, I get the error... Too much recursion I have sorted through as much code as possible and set breakpoints in a few places. I am pretty sure it is something to do with the plugin (specifically, when it is called in the click handler). For your convenience, I am using the unpacked versions of jQuery and scrollTo plugin. What on earth am I doing wrong? Thanks for your time.
