  Many times, I like to learn PHP for web development but been drawn back due to comments like the following :- (Comments are just for reference and does not invite Flame-war) "PHP is good but generates spaghetti code" "PHP is nice but Python is marriage material" "PHP lags stuff that you get in other languages like C# or JAVA" But for PHP5 i have seen some promising comments. So, What my question is how does PHP5 fare with the earlier versions of the language and is it good enough now to learn for web development.   What is the "best" setup for robots.txt? I'm using the following permalink structure in Wordpress: /%category%/%postname%/. So I can remove this, right? Do I want to disallow indexing categories because of my permalinkstructure? An article can have several tags and be in multiple categories. But, comments about the design or concept of the system are more problematic. They come up all over the place, such as "Some Unity feedback" in other places that are not really about Unity. Ideally the answer will be a place where the comments will actually be read by the design team will tend to encourage people to read the existing comments and not post the same thing again and again perhaps will tend to bubble up good solutions rather than strange ideas will not be annoying to people who are trying to use that place for something else

• .NET ComboBox Autocomplete failing on slashes

  The .NET ComboBox autocomplete will not fully autocomplete with the display text contains a slash. It completes only up to the slash, leaving SelectedIndex == -1 and SelectedValue == null. This behavior stupidly persists no matter whether your autocompletesource is set to ListItems rather than FileSystem or URL. Is there any workaround for this that doesn't involve just throwing the ComboBox class away and writing a "MyComboBox" class?

  I am taking a software engineering class right now. Our assignment is to evaluate Mozilla's Thunderbird. Our assignment is to evaluate the size of Thunderbird. One metric that we need to use is the number of lines of code in the project. (Lines of code meaning not including comments or new lines). Is there a standard way to find the number of lines or am I better off just cracking out a script to do this? I think that I could do something like this: # remove all comments find -name *.java | \ sed "/\/*/,\*\// s/.*//g | \ # remove multiline comments sed s/\/\///g # remove single line comments # count not empty lines find -name *.java | grep -c "<character>" But I would need to do that for each file type. It seems like there should be some utility that does that already. (something mac/unix compatible would be preferable).

• One to many too much data returned - MySQL

  I have 2 related MySQL tables in a one to many relationship. Customers: cust_id, cust_name, cust_notes Orders: order_id, cust_id, order_comments So, if I do a standard join to get all customers and their orders via PHP, I return something like: Jack Black, jack's notes, comments about jack's 1st order Jack Black, jack's notes, comments about jack's 2nd order Simon Smith, simon's notes, comments about simon's 1st order Simon Smith, simon's notes, comments about simon's 2nd order The problem is that *cust_notes* is a text field and can be quite large (a couple of thousand words). So, it seems like returning that field for every order is inneficient. I could use *GROUP_CONCAT* and JOINS to return all *order_comments* on a single row BUT order_comments is a large text field too, so it seems like that could create a problem. Should I just use two separate queries, one for the customers table and one for the orders table? Is there a better way?

  It is not clear from the PDF ISO standard document (PDF32000-2008) whether a comment may follow the startxref keyword: startxref Byte_offset_of_last_cross-reference_section %%EOF The standard does seem to imply that comments may appear anywhere: 7.2.3 Comments Any occurrence of the PERCENT SIGN (25h) outside a string or stream introduces a comment. The comment consists of all characters after the PERCENT SIGN and up to but not including the end of the line, including regular, delimiter, SPACE (20h), and HORZONTAL TAB characters (09h). A conforming reader shall ignore comments, and treat them as single white-space characters. That is, a comment separates the token preceding it from the one following it. EXAMPLE The PDF fragment in this example is syntactically equivalent to just the tokens abc and 123. abc% comment ( /%) blah blah blah 123 Comments (other than the %PDF–n.m and %%EOF comments described in 7.5, "File Structure") have no semantics. They are not necessarily preserved by applications that edit PDF files. If they are allowed to appear after the startxref, parsing the file becomes more difficult because you do not know how far to back up from the %%EOF comment to start parsing to find the byte offset. PROFILE -user Primary Key, Foreign Key (USER) -birthday -region -photoFile ... So I need select all pages, comments and favourites pages some users and display it in one list, sorted by date. For better perfomance (I think) I changed my structure to this: table USER and PROFILE without changes ACTIVITY (additional table- have common fields: user,date) -id (Primary Key) -user Foreign Key(USER) -date -page Foreign Key(PAGE) -comment Foreign Key(COMMENTS) -favourite_page Foreign Key(FAVOURITES_PAGES) PAGES -id (Primary Key) -page COMMENTS -id (Primary Key) -page Foreign Key(PAGE) -comment FAVOURITES_PAGES -id (Primary Key) -favourite_page Foreign Key(PAGE) So now it is very easy get sorted records from all tables. But I have no only foreign key to PAGES, COMMENTS and FAVOURITES_PAGES in ACTIVITY table - there is about ten Foreign Key fields and in one record only one have value, others have None: ACTIVITY id user date page comment ... 1 2 2010-02-23 None 1 2 1 2010-02-21 1 None .... It is corect solution. When I display about 40 records in one page (pagination) I must wait about one secound, but database is almost emty (a few users and about 100 records in others tables). It is depends on amount records per page - I have checked it, but why it takes too long time, becouse of relationships? The website is built in Python/Django. Any advices/opinion?

I'm a little dumbfounded on how this happened, the client mentioned a couple e-mails of this, so I don't think it is a random glitch. Also, the e-mail address was formatted like an e-mail address, so someone or some program was interpreting the labels next to each text box. I also noticed that the first and last names entered are the same word, even though they were in different text boxes, I'm thinking its some spam program, but wouldn't they try to advertise something and make money, rather than just spouting out random text? Also, the comments section makes no sense to me at all, the links goto nowhere and they're all perfectly formatted, a random person just screwing around wouldn't know those tags, and a programmer doing it wouldn't bother with it, but also neither would a program. I have no idea what caused this or how to fix it, I'm drawing a blank here. Anyone have any ideas?

  I need to show a list of movies ordered by the date they were registered in the system and the amount of comments users have made about them. So, I have the object "Movie", there is a MovieManager interface that is used for retrieving/persisting data to the database and a servlet RecentlyAddedMovies.java that forwards to a .jsp to render the list. I will explain my problem by showing an example of how I am doing another similar task: Showing top ranked movies. The Movie object has a collection of Comment associated but of course, it lacks an instance variable with the length of that collection. The following things came into my mind: a) Create a MovieView object or something like that, that is only used by the "View" and "Controller" layer of the MVC which is not part of the "Model" in the sense that is used only for easy retrieval and display of information. This MovieView object will have a title, registerDate and # of Comments so the thing would look something like this: /** * Returns a collection of the x most recently added movies * @param x the amount of movies to return * @return A collection of movies * @throws SQLException */ public Collection<Movie2> getXRecentlyAddedMovies(int x) throws SQLException; The .jsp: <c:forEach var="movie2" items="${movies2}"> ... <c:out value="${movie2.title}"/> <c:out value="${movie2.registerDate}"/> <c:out value="${movie2.noOfComments}"/> ... </c:forEach> b) Add to the Collection the movie has, empty Comments (there is no actual need to retrieve all the comment data from the database) so that the comment's collection.size() will show the number of comments that movie has. (This sounds horrible to me) c) Add to the "Movie" object an instance field noOfComments with the setter and getter that will help with this type of cases even if, looking only from the object point of view, it is a redundant field since it already has a Collection that is ".size()"able . d) Make the MovieManager retrieve some structure like a Map or a Collection of a two component array or something like that that will contain both a Movie object and the associated number of comments and with JSLT iterate over it and show it accordingly.

Second file has format: [23] [config] 'name'='abc' 'see?'= [23] Now the requirement is that I need to compare both files and generate file as: #comments config = { #comments 'name': 'abc', 'see?': 'world':'ABC',CLASS=3 } So the result file will contain the values from the first file, unless the value for same attribute is there in second file, which will overwrite the value.   I’m trying to design a database to use with ASP.net MVC application. Here is the scenario: There are three entities and users can post their comments for each of these different entities. I just wonder how just put one table for Comments and link all other entities to it. Obviously, Comments table needs 3 references (foreign key) to those tables but as you know these foreign keys can’t be null and just one of them can be filled for each row.   I have the following haml code: - @theLinks.each_index do |x| %br %form{:action=>'/Download', :method=>"post",:enctype=>"multipart/form-data"} %input{:type=>"submit", :name=>"#{@theLinks[x].url}", :value=>"Name: #{@theLinks[x].Name} Study Time: #{@theLinks[x].studyTime} Comments: #{@theLinks[x].comments}"} Basically, for each person, list the time they participated in a study and the comments on the study. Right now, this renders as a set of buttons. I'd like to render it as a table, with each row clickable in the same way (ie, using the 'post' method, so that only the haml file has to be edited without touching the rest of the files). Ideally, I'd also like to be able to sort the table by name, time, or comments, but that might be getting ahead of myself. So how can I change this list of buttons into a table with clickable rows?

• A better way to build this MySQL statement with subselects

  I have five tables in my database. Members, items, comments, votes and countries. I want to get 10 items. I want to get the count of comments and votes for each item. I also want the member that submitted each item, and the country they are from. After posting here and elsewhere, I started using subselects to get the counts, but this query is taking 10 seconds or more! SELECT `items_2`.*, (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM `comments` WHERE (comments.Script = items_2.Id) AND (comments.Active = 1)) AS `Comments`, (SELECT COUNT(votes.Member) FROM `votes` WHERE (votes.Script = items_2.Id) AND (votes.Active = 1)) AS `votes`, `countrys`.`Name` AS `Country` FROM `items` AS `items_2` INNER JOIN `members` ON items_2.Member=members.Id AND members.Active = 1 INNER JOIN `members` AS `members_2` ON items_2.Member=members.Id LEFT JOIN `countrys` ON countrys.Id = members.Country GROUP BY `items_2`.`Id` ORDER BY `Created` DESC LIMIT 10 My question is whether this is the right way to do this, if there's better way to write this statement OR if there's a whole different approach that will be better. Should I run the subselects separately and aggregate the information?
