  I'm looking through perlop and perlsub pages of the Perl manual. There are many references about "magic" and "magical" here (just search any of them for the "magic"). I wonder why is Perl so rich in them.   Hello, We are soon to get VS2010 and according to the link below, Microsoft do not support VS2010 on XP x64. http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/professional/system-requirements Does anyone have XP 64bit running VS2010? I am not interested in 64bit version of VS (I am wanting to install a 32bit version of VS2010 professional on a 64 bit XP machine). I am aware that XP will require SP3. Any warnings? Horror stories? Advice?

• FxCop CA2000 Warning in UserControls

  Running FxCop on a WebProject that contains a UserControl will result in a CA2000 Warning (Call System.IDisposable.Dispose on object) for every ServerControl (Label, TextBox,...) in that UserControl. I understand why this would happen. Replacing the 'offending' ServerControls with a PlaceHolder and then adding the Controls in code (Using...End Using) might be a way around that, but it is not always an option.But, if they are not 'kosher' why have ServerControls you can drop in your ascx/aspx in the first place ?Am I missing something ? If, like in my case, you inherit a sizeable collection of fairly complex UserControls, do I now add every 'offending' Control to the GlobalSupperssions file (that's a lot of mind numbing right-clicking) ?I do not want to suppress all CA2000 warnings since it makes perfect sense to fix them, but not in the case of ServerControls in UserControls.

  Right now I'm using Eclipse for Android development, but my computer is kind of old and I like responsive development environments. I've tried using VIM, Emacs and TextMate but I'm missing every feature in the Eclipse Android plugin: Auto generate R class Check for errors & warnings on code Auto completion Deploy to device or emulator Integrate with DDMS The list goes to infinity ... I know Eclipse is the best for what I want to do, but if I want to use any editor, what do you recommend to achieve a not so frustrating Android development experience?

• C# Operator Overloading post-fix increment

  I'm coding a date class and am having trouble with the post-fix increment (the prefix increment seems fine). Here is the sample code: public class date { int year, month, day; public date(int d, int m, int y) { day = d; month = m; year = y; } static public date operator ++(date d) { return d.Next(d); } } The method "Next(date d)" takes a date and returns tomorrows date (I left it out for brevity). I'm to young in C# to understand why the prefix is fine but postfix increment does nothing. But remember in C++ we would have to have two methods instead of just one - for prefix and postfix increments. Also no errors or warnings on compile.

  Following is from pylint docs: --ignore=<file> Add <file or directory> to the black list. It should be a base name, not a path. You may set this option multiple times. [current: %default] Yet I'm not having luck getting the directory part work. I have directory called migrations, which has django-south migration files. As I enter --ignore=migrations it still keeps giving me the errors/warnings in files inside migrations directory. Could it be that --ignore is not working for directories? If I could even use regexp to match the ignored files it would work, since django-south files are all named 0001_something, 0002_something...

• Dealing with UIImagePickerController to minimize memory useage

  So, I have read the SO post on UIImagePickerController, UIImage, Memory and More, and I read the post on Memory Leak Problems with UIImagePickerController in iPhone. I have VASTLY increased my memory efficiency between these 2 posts, and I thank the OPs and the people that provided the answers. I just had a question on the answer provided in the Memory Leak question, which was (essentially): only have one instance of the controller throughout the programs runtime What would be the best way to go about this without causing memory leaks? Right now I am initiating it and releasing it on every use from within the view, and I am seeing exactly what the answer describes (Memory warnings and a crash after about 20 uses). Should I initiate the UIImagePickerController when I need it, but use a seperate class unrelated to the view to control it? How should I deal with releasing the controller if I do it this way?

  I'm having problems using params in the ORDER BY section of my SQL. It doesn't issue any warnings, but prints out nothing. $order = 'columnName'; $direction = 'ASC'; $stmt = $db->prepare("SELECT field from table WHERE column = :my_param ORDER BY :order :direction"); $stmt->bindParam(':my_param', $is_live, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':order', $order, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->bindParam(':direction', $direction, PDO::PARAM_STR); $stmt->execute(); The :my_param works, but not :order or :direction. Is it not being internally escaped correctly? Am I stuck inserting it directly in the SQL? • Compiling PAR for Perl under Windows

  I've downloaded PAR from http://par.perl.org/wiki/Main_Page and compiled it after reading the README file. I've used dmake-4.12-20090907 instead of nmake ('cause 1.5 does not work) from http://search.cpan.org/dist/dmake/. No problems during the installing proccess (repeating the install proccess doesn't help farther, no warnings, just less text output), but there is no pp.exe or something similar. I'm using Windows XP, all compilations were done on the c drive. perl -v "This is perl 5, version 12, subversion 2 (v5.12.2) built for MSWin32-x86-multi-thread"

• Why does this code fail in D2010, but not D7?

  Why does this code get an access error on the Result := Buffer line in D2010, but not D7? Something, I'd guess, involving UniCode, but the compiler doesn't generate any warnings. • casting unused return values to void

  int fn(); void whatever() { (void) fn(); } Is there any reason for casting an unused return value to void, or am I right in thinking it's a complete waste of time? Follow up: Well that seems pretty comprehensive. I suppose it's better than commenting an unused return value since self documenting code is better than comments. Personally, I'll turn these warnings off since it's unnecessary noise. I'll eat my words if a bug escapes because of it...

• int vs size_t on 64bit

  Porting code from 32bit to 64bit. Lots of places with int len = strlen(pstr); These all generate warnings now because strlen() returns size_t which is 64bit and int is still 32bit. So I've been replacing them with size_t len = strlen(pstr); But I just realized that this is not safe, as size_t is unsigned and it can be treated as signed by the code (I actually ran into one case where it caused a problem, thank you, unit tests!). Blindly casting strlen return to (int) feels dirty. Or maybe it shouldn't? So the question is: is there an elegant solution for this? I probably have a thousand lines of code like that in the codebase; I can't manually check each one of them and the test coverage is currently somewhere between 0.01 and 0.001%.

  A there any g++ options which can detect improper initialization of std::string with NULL const char*? I was in the process of turning some int fields into std::string ones, i.e: struct Foo { int id; Foo() : id(0) {} }; ...turned into: struct Foo { std::string id; Foo() : id(0) {} //oooops! }; I completely overlooked bad 'id' initialization with 0 and g++ gave me no warnings at all. This error was detected in the run time(std::string constructor threw an exception) but I'd really like to detect such stuff in the compile time. Is there any way?

• Intellij Idea 13.x and ASM 5.x library incompatible?

  I can't get Intellij Idea 13.0 to compile my code against ASM 5.0.3 I have a multi-module Maven project. It compiles and installs successfully. Apparently com.google.findbugs:findbugs has a dependency on asm:asm:3.3 and I want to use org.ow2.asm:asm:5.0.3 to manipulate some bytecode. So in the parent pom.xml I exclude the asm:asm:3.3 dependencies from the classpath. This works fine when I run mvn install from the command line. I can't get the Build - Make Project menu selection to work in Intellij Idea.   Hello. I have a working UITableView in my view controller. It is being successfully populated and seems to be fine. However, when I try using following function, new view is not loaded (function is called, I get output from NSLog): - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { NSLog(@"asf"); [self.navigationController pushViewController:sendRequestFavoriteController animated:YES]; } What might be a problem? • java serialization and final fields

  I have an class defining an immutable value type that I now need to serialize. The immutability comes from the final fields which are set in the constructor. I've tried serializing, and it works (surprisingly?) - but I've no idea how. Here's an example of the class public class MyValueType implements Serializable { private final int value; private transient int derivedValue; public MyValueType(int value) { this.value = value; this.derivedValue = derivedValue(value); } // getters etc... } Given that the class doesn't have a no arg constructor, how can it be instantiated and the final field set? (An aside - I noticed this class particularly because IDEA wasn't generating a "no serialVersionUID" inspection warning for this class, yet successfully generated warnings for other classes that I've just made serializable.)

• Build warning for distribution configuration of an iPad only application

  Hi, I'm getting the following warning when building an ad hoc distribution copy of a new iPad only application: [BWARN]warning: building with 'Targeted Device Family' that includes iPad ('2') requires building with the 3.2 or later SDK. These are my build settings: Architectures: Optimized (armv6 armv7) Any iPhone OS Simulator: i386 Any iPhone OS Device: Optimized (armv6 armv7) Base SDK: iPhone Device 3.2 Valid Architectures: armv6 armv7 Target Device Family: iPad iPhone OS Deployment Target: iPhone OS 3.2 With this in mind I don't understand the warning. • VB.Net variable declaration

  I notice that both of these compile without any compiler warnings or errors, even with Option Strict and Option Explicit both turned on: Dim x As Exception = New Exception("this is a test") Dim y = New Exception("this is another test") My question is, is it more proper to use the first way (see variable x) or the second way (see variable y)? My guess is that VB doesn't need the As clause since the variable is being initialized in place, so the compiler can infer the type. I tend to like the first way as it just "feels" right and is more consistent with other languages like C#, just wondered if there was some good reason for one way over the other. I guess it's really personal choice.

• Can obfuscation (proguard) lead to MIDlet malfunction?

  Hi, Im trying to obfuscate a Java MIDlet with proguard. It runs ok on the PC, however, when I run it on the phone, the program opens, connects to the server, and then freezes. If I disable obfuscation, it runs ok again on the phone. Ive tryed all the obfuscation levels for apps (7, 8 and 9 at NetBeans), and none of them seems to work properly, and I cant release this app for comercial use without obfuscation. Also, the compiler throws some warnings: Note: duplicate definition of library class [java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream] Note: there were 14 duplicate class definitions. But I dont know if this is realy the problem. Does anyone knows what is wrong? The obfuscator arguments are listed below: Obfuscator Arguments (7): -dontusemixedcaseclassnames -default package '' -keep public class ** { public *; } Obfuscator Arguments (8): same as (7) plus -overloadaggressively.   I have a class that looks like the following: Public Class Utilities Public Shared Function blah(userCode As String) As String 'doing some stuff End Function End Class I'm running FxCop 10 on it and it says: "Because type 'Utilities' contains only 'static' ( 'Shared' in Visual Basic) members, add a default private constructor to prevent the compiler from adding a default public constructor." Ok, you're right Mr. FxCop, I'll add a private constructor: Private Utilities() Now I'm having: "It appears that field 'Utilities.Utilities' is never used or is only ever assigned to. Use this field or remove it." Any ideas of what should I do to get rid of both warnings?
