    I am wondering why Windows 7 always automatically changes my input or keyboard language. I've a notebook with an integrated QWERTY keyboard English (United States). Traveling, I use that one but, additionally, I've my own as well as a much better keyboard at home which is a QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany). Thus, being at home, I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard. Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not play along at this one. Every time, I start up my notebook, it is usually set to English (United States) but that's not the problem. In case, I'd use my notebook QWERTY keyboard English (United States), that's fine. However, if I start up my notebook and I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany), I usually press ALT + Left Shift in order to switch from English (United States) to German (Germany) and Windows 7 switches the input language but only for the program that is currently open. If my input language is set to German (Germany) and I, e.g., open NotePad, Windows 7 automatically switches my input language to English (United States). This is very annoying since I've to change the input or keyboard language to German (Germany) every time I open up a new program. Why doesn't Windows 7 stay with one input language if I changed it manually by pressing ALT + Left Shift? Why doesn't the manual change of the input or keyboard language apply for the whole Windows 7? Why does it only affect the currently opened program? Since I've two keyboards with two different layouts, I seriously need to have both of the keyboards languages installed. I tried both of the below settings in order to find a solution for my problem.   • Why does the file date always change to the current date?

    We are a programming shop, but this i snot a programming question. My boss has put an external HD on the network. It contains the 'home' folders for users on the network. He uses it to place VB projects that he wants me to work on. But no matter what date and time he places a project on the drive, the file dates(modified) always shows the current date, though nothing in the files have changed. It makes it very hard to confirm that he has given me the latest versions. (He is not a fan of version control and nothing I do will convince him different.) Any ideas why this happens and how to prevent it from happening? P.S. As I wrote this I decided to add the last accessed date to the file display, and those dates happen to show the dates I expect to see. Why is the modified date getting changed, but not the accessed date. Does the accessed date change only when the files are opened or read, changed or not? Note: I use Directory Opus 9, a replacement for windows file browser. Thanks, Marshall

  • How do you make Google's interface always be in your chosen language?

    Google's interface and search results don't always appear in my preferred language, English. I'm located in Mexico City and, although I generally have no problem with Spanish, I would prefer search results in English most of the time. (The exception is when I'm using search terms in Spanish.) I'd also prefer the interface to be in English, but that's far less important to me than search results. Google looks at your IP to decide where you're coming from and thus what language to present results in. So, when I type www.google.com into the URL bar, it redirects me to www.google.com.mx. Is there a way to force Google to use one language all the time? Here are some things I've done and tried: 0) I have a Google account, and I've configured it such that it should know that English is my preferred language. I don't often explicitly log out of Google, so generally Google knows I'm me and my preferences when I access its services. 1) I've configured my browser to ask for pages in English. Very few sites support this feature at all; Google isn't one of them. 2) From www.google.com.mx, I can click on "Google.com in English". This works until, I think, I close the browser. 2a) From www.google.com.mx, I can go into account configuration, which is English. From then on, everything's in English. 3) I can append &hl=en (Human Language = English) to the end of the URLs of result pages. 2, 2a, and 3 all "work", but they're all mildly annoying. I'd rather avoid them if I could. (At the risk of stating the obvious, English and Spanish are the languages I'm dealing with, but I imagine that, say, a francophone using Google from Korea would run into basically the same issue.)

  • Is there any way to force my Linux box to always boot up with a self-assigned IP address?

    This is perhaps an unusual request: I'm trying to get a Debian Linux box to always give itself a self-assigned IP address (i.e. 169.254.x.y) on boot. In particular, I want it to do that even when there is a DHCP server present on the LAN. That is, it should not request an IP address from the DHCP server. From what I can see in the "man interfaces" text, there is an option for "manual", and an option for "dhcp". Manual assignment won't do, since I need multiple boxes to work on the same LAN without requiring any manual configuration... and "dhcp" does what I want, but only if there is no DHCP server on the LAN. (A requirement is that the functionality of these boxes should not be affected by the presence or absence of a DHCP server). Is there a trick that I can use to get this behavior? EDIT: By "no manual configuration", I mean that I should be able to take this box (headless) to any LAN anywhere, plug in the Ethernet cable, and have it do its thing. I shouldn't have to ssh to the box and edit files to get it working each time it is moved to a different LAN.

  • On Windows 2008 R2, how do I back up DHCP if the DHCP .mdb database is always busy?

    I get this from my backup software. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\dhcp.mdb : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\j50.log : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\j50tmp.log : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\tmp.edb : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. My questions: Should I be doing a manual backup of DHCP via command line tools or maybe with MMC, Action, Backup before I run my backup? Is the %SystemRoot%\System32\DHCP\Backup directory always kept up to date? (which does get backed up by backup software) I'm answering my own question but the registry key is set up for 3c, 60 minutes, I believe. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCPServer\Parameters\BackupInterva This is not the included backup software for Windows. It is another product, but I have seen this with every backup software I've ever used.

  • Why does Windows/Microsoft Updates always take such a long time to detect available updates?

    It's a common task for many of us who work in any form of IT position using Windows. Eventually you have to install/re-install a version of Windows and what follows is a very long OS updating process. For a long time I have accepted the fact that this is a slow process and that's all there is to it. There is a lot to download, and some updates require restarts followed by further updates... Ugh! This morning I had to go through the process of installing Windows XP with SP3. I'm installing the OS on a VM on an SSD and I've been working on this thing for over 6 hours. Although, think there are many ways to knit-pick this process for improvements, there is one step that is always particularly slow and I can not figure out a good reason why. That step is the detection step on a manual update. Specifically, when navigate to the Windows (or Microsoft) Updates page, and then click the 'Custom' button to detect your updates. It appears that your PC just sits there for a painful amount of time. Check your Task Manager and it looks like your PC is, in fact, locked because your CPU isn't cooking but that's certainly not the case. Somethings happening but I have no clue what's going on? What is the updating software doing? If the registry was being searched, shouldn't my CPU usage peak? Does anybody know what's happening? I can loosely justify why some of the steps in the update process take so long. However, this one doesn't seem to have any reasoning.

  • Is it better to always copy and delete, rather than move?

    Generally speaking, I find myself panicking when I realise that if I cancel a file move, it could cause the target or source to be incomplete. This question applies to Windows and Unix-based platforms. I can never remember exactly how the move command works in either case. For example, if you're moving a directory; does it copy the entire directory, then delete it after, or does it copy then delete each file individually? I always realise after typing something like, mv verybigdir dest that I really should have typed cp -R verybigdir dest && rm verybigdir (where the && operator only moves to the next command if the first was successful) -- or is this pointless? What happens exactly when I press Ctrl+C half way through a move? Likewise, what exactly happens on Windows when I press the cancel button? I can't count the number of times I've moved something (the last time was when using svn) and had two directories, with split contents. I guess the answer is difficult, because not all applications move groups of files in the same way.

    I have legacy code (I didn't write it) that always included the encoding attribute, but recompiling it to D2010, TXMLDocument doesn't include the enconding anymore. Because the XML data have accented characters both on tags and data, TXMLDocument.LoadFromFile simply throws EDOMParseErros saying that an invalid character is found on the file. Relevant code: Doc := TXMLDocument.Create(nil); try Doc.Active := True; Doc.Encoding := XMLEncoding; RootNode := Doc.CreateElement('Test', ''); Doc.DocumentElement := RootNode; <snip> //Result := Doc.XMl.Text; Doc.SaveToXML(Result); // Both lines gives the same result On older versions of Delphi, the following line is generated: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> On D2010, this is generated: <?xml version="1.0"?> If I change manually the line, all works like always worked in the last years.   • How to troubleshoot memcache set method always fail issue?

    I have XAMPP 1.7.3 installed on Windows 7. The PHP version is 5.3.1. I have successfully installed memcache for win32 from http://www.splinedancer.com/memcached-win32. I got PHP extension php_memcache.dll from http://downloads.php.net/pierre. Restarting apache and checking phpinfo() shows memcache is OK. When I test it with below PHP page.   • My python program always brings down my internet connection after several hours running, how do I debug and fix this problem?

    I'm writing a python script checking/monitoring several server/websites status(response time and similar stuff), it's a GUI program and I use separate thread to check different server/website, and the basic structure of each thread is using an infinite while loop to request that site every random time period(15 to 30 seconds), once there's changes in website/server each thread will start a new thread to do a thorough check(requesting more pages and similar stuff). The problem is, my internet connection always got blocked/jammed/messed up after several hours running of this script, the situation is, from my script side I got urlopen error timed out each time it's requesting a page, and from my FireFox browser side I cannot open any site. But the weird thing is, the moment I close my script my Internet connection got back on immediately which means now I can surf any site through my browser, so it must be the script causing all the problem. I've checked the program carefully and even use del to delete any connection once it's used, still get the same problem. I only use urllib2, urllib, mechanize to do network requests. Anybody knows why such thing happens? How do I debug this problem? Is there a tool or something to check my network status once such situation occurs? It's really bugging me for a while... By the way I'm behind a VPN, does it have something to do with this problem? Although I don't think so because my network always get back on once the script closed, and the VPN connection never drops(as it appears) during the whole process.

I am basically creating an object in javascript and trying to call a method on the controller that will return a string of html. Not JSON. I've been playing around with dataType and contentType but still no joy. So apologies if the code snippets are a bit messy. But how could I always properly close the DB without having to worry if I have that return, or a raise, or continue, or whatever in the middle?     Can I count on string arrays within the "strings.xml" resource file to be parsed/deserialized in the same order every time? If anyone can cite any documentation that clearly spells out this guarantee, I'd appreciate it. Or, at the very least, offer a significant amount of experience with this topic. Also, is this a best practice or am I missing a simpler solution?   • Force gdm login screen to the primary monitor

    I have two monitors attached to my video card. Primary monitor has a resolution equal to 1280x1024 and the second has 1920x1200. My gdm login screen always appears on the second monitor even if it is switched off. My question is how to force gdm to show the login screen always on the primary monitor with resolution 1280x1024? I use Nvidia GT9500 videcard in Twinview mode. I can't use Xinerama because vpdau doesn't work correclty in this mode. What I have found is that mouse pointer always appears in the center of union of the screens and center is always on the monitor with higher resolution. Login screen always shows where mouse cursor is. Now my primary monitor has a resolution equal to 1920x1080. The problem still persists, mouse cursor always appears in the right-bottom corner of the second monitor.

  • [Android] Is there a way to make ellipsize="marquee" always scroll?

    I want to use the marquee effect on a TextView, but the text is only being scrolled when the TextView gets focus. That's a problem, because in my case, it can't. I am using: android:ellipsize="marquee" android:marqueeRepeatLimit="marquee_forever" Is there a way to have the TextView always scroll its text? I've seen this being done in the Android Market app, where the app name will scroll in the title bar, even if it doesn't receive focus, but I couldn't find this being mentioned in the API docs.

  • Always use multiple cores (/MP) flag with Visual Studio?

    I'm using Visual Studio 2008 on my main build system. I've been playing with Visual Studio 2010 on another one. It appears that the tool still only wants to use one core when compiling unless you specify the /MP switch in the compiler switches (see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1422601/how-do-i-turn-on-multi-cpu-core-c-compiles-in-the-visual-studio-ide-2008). I have to do this for every project. Is there a way to make VS always do this?
