  • Finding out why Dell Controler is Degraded

    I installed open manage on a couple of my PE 2950s for snmp monitoring of the RAID. All the checks seem to come back okay except for controllerState: [root@aMachine ~]# snmpwalk -v 2c -c bestNotToPostPasswords myMachine -m +StorageManagement-MIB controllerstate StorageManagement-MIB::controllerState.1 = INTEGER: degraded(6) Other checks seems to indicate the battery, LD, and physicals disks are all good unless I missing something. Can anyone tell if I am missing something or neglecting something import in my RAID monitoring/understanding? I get degraded for both these servers I have set up.     I'm searching for a secure and easy way for business partners to collaboratively edit and exchange documents, share calendars, create schedules, and assign tasks. I speculate that the ideal collaboration environment or work-flow would actually involve several technologies and services. My co-workers and I have tried a variety of things from Google Apps to Wiki's, but nothing feels very fluid or complete. I suppose defining what we need and our constraints is probably in order: collaboratively edit basic text documents and spreadsheets exchange documents like flow-charts, graphs, and files generated by our other desktop applications, but not source code assign tasks to each other and ourselves and track the history of those tasks easily see when relevant documents have been modified since last viewing and ability to easily push notifications to relevant workers (a clean front page that shows updates would probably suffice) provide limited access to contract workers and guests users if a remote user system is compromised (keystroke logger or other spyware) we don't want the criminal to be able to gain access to all business documents (processes, trade-secrets, customer lists, etc.) simply because they gained access to a single Google account (or whatever web service) Cannot be a difficult to administer VPN infrastructure Cannot cost more than $100 per month (yeah, money is tight) Needs to support up to 25 users We can host our own web applications, but it must be low maintenance solution

  • Classic ASP vs. ASP.NET encryption options

    I'm working on a web site where the new pages are ASP.NET and the legacy pages are Classic ASP. Being new to development in the Windows env, I've been studying the latest technology, i.e. .NET and I become like a deer in headlights when ever legacy issues come up regarding COM objects. Security on the website is an abomination, but I've easily encrypted the connectionStrings in the web.config file per http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/021506-1.aspx based on DPAPI machine mode. I understand this approach is not the most secure, but it's better than nothing which is what it was for the ASP.NET pages. Now, I question how to do similar encryption for the connection strings used by the Classic ASP pages. A complicating factor is that the web sited is hosted where I do not have admin permissions or even command line access, just FTP. Moreover I want to avoid managing the key. My research has found: DPAPI with COM interop. Seems like this should already be available, but the only thing I could find discussing this is CyptoUtility (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc163884.aspx) which is not installed on the hosting server. There are plenty of other third party COM objects, e.g. Crypto from Dalun Software http://www.dalun.com, but these aren't on the hosted server either, and they look to me to require you to do some kind of key management. There is CAPICOM on the hosted server, but M$ has deprecated it and many report it is not the easiest to use. It is not clear to me whether I can avoid key management with CAPICOM similar to using DPAPI for ASP.NET. If anyone happens to know, please clue me in. I could write an web service in ASP.NET and have the classic ASP pages use it to get the decrypted connection strings and then store those in an application variable. I would not need to use SSL since I could use localhost and nothing would be sent over the internet. In the simpliest form I could implement what someone termed a poor man's version based on a simple XML stream, however, I really was looking to avoid any development since I find it hard to believe there is not a simple solution for Classic ASP like there is for ASP.NET. Maybe I'm missing some options... Recommendations are requested...

  • Unable to use JConsole with Tomcat running as windows service

    I am running tomcat 6.0.18 as a windows service. In the service applet the jvm is configured default, i.e. it is using jvm.dll of the JRE. I am trying to monitor this application with JConsole but cannot connect to it locally. I added the parameter -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote (which works when starting tomcat with the start.bat script). But the jvm does not seem to pick up the parameter.

    I have a value in the database which is 2.700000002. When I run a query in Management studio in SQL SERVER 2005 I get 2.7. But when I run in SQL SERVER 2000 query analyzer it comes 2.700000002. 2.70000002 is correct why is SQL SERVER 2005 trying to change the value by rounding it or selecting the floor value?

    They say that compacting garbage collectors are faster than traditional memory management because they only have to collect live objects, and by rearranging them in memory so everything's in one contiguous block, you end up with no heap fragmentation. But how can that be done quickly? It seems to me that that's equivalent to the bin-packing problem, which is NP-hard and can't be completed in a reasonable amount of time on a large dataset within the current limits of our knowledge about computation. What am I missing?

  • Looking for software to create a personal hotspot on Mac OS X (not using the built-in ability)

    I got my nifty little MacBook Air today. Since I will be going on travel I was hoping to use my iPad 3G as screen extension with Air Display. It works being in a shared WiFi network. Sadly Apple is a bit restrictive on the tethering with their mobile devices such as the iPad. Now I read iOS 4.3 will enable the iPad to use tethered networks. But the feature will not be working for iPad 3G. I assume their big partner telecom companies fear everyone will quit their internet contract with them. So I want to create a personal hotspot on my MacBook and use it on my iPad. But the iPad is not able to use this network. The network is visible but not usable. On Windows there is this connectify program which lets the PC act as wireless router. Does anybody know a similar program for Mac which would turn it into a wireless router? Or is there something I don't see with Mac OS X's builtin features?
