• Problem installing drivers for Brother DCP-1400

  I have a problem installing drivers for my DCP-1400 printer. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I downloaded the lpr and cupswrapper files from the Brother linux site into my Download directory. I next run Terminal and switch to the Downloads directory. At the prompt I type in the following: sudo dpkg -i --force-all dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.386.deb It asks for my password which I type in and press Enter. I get the following errors: (Reading database ... 155195 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace dcp1400lpr 1.1.2-1 (using dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb) ... • Sorting downloads folder with bash script

  I'm writing script for my own needs to sort Downloads folder on my mac in bash. I pass to the function parameters: source directory, destination directory and array of file extensions I want to move. My problem is that when function is in "find" line then it copies just one file with that extension but when I remove all variables and I put parameters directly then it works fine. • Configuring SMB shares in OS X

  I'm at my wit's end trying to control SMB file sharing on my Mac. (OS X 10.5 Leopard). I want to do something fairly simple: share a particular (non-home, non-Public) folder over my my SMB/Windows network with two users (accounts are local to my Mac), and share no other folders with anyone. The instructions on the internet are fairly straightforward: add the folders to be shared to the File Sharing panel of the Sharing System Preferences pane: ..and ensure that I'm sharing through SMB: However, when I actually try to connect via a SMB client (Windows XP in this case), the share does not appear. I see my home directory, "Macintosh HD", and my printers, but not the folder I just shared. I ensured that the underlying directory had the proper permissions (since this seems to affect share visibility) and that the "Shared Folder" checkbox was checked: ...but this didn't have any effect. I checked /etc/smb.conf but there was nothing obviously out of place there. I've also restarted smbd and rebooted. What else should I be looking for?

• HP Rapid Deployment - Change Data Store Path

  I am running HP Rapid Deployment (Altiris eXpress Deployment Server 6.9 - Build 164) on an inherited Windows Server 2003 SP2. I need to change the Data Store Path as the default is pointing to the C: drive and there is not enough space there. I would like to set it to the D: drive where there is plenty of space. Reading the documentation: Data store path: Specifies the path to stored packages and files and other DS functions (such as license verification). The default path is C:\Program files\Altiris\express\Deployment Server. Note: Do not use this setting to change the path to the Deployment Share. Modifying this setting does not automatically allow you to use another shared directory other than the express share. To change the Deployment Share shared directory, run a Custom install to establish another location for the Deployment Share. Is there any other way I can change the path as I do not have the install media?

• Empty track in Windows Media Player 12 that can't be deleted

  Right after I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7, I synced with my DropBox account that contains all of my music and added the directory to Windows Media Player 12. I now have a strange track that really isn't a track at all. It's grouped under "Unknown Artist" and has absolutely no text. The only reason I know it's there is because it highlights on mouse-over. Double-clicking on it does nothing. When the song before it ends, Windows Media Player stops playing altogether until I choose a different song (it should continue to play the next song on its own). When I try to delete this mysterious track, nothing happens. I've cleared my library and re-imported everything, but this empty track keeps appearing. I have also checked my Music directory and there is no empty MP3. What is going on here?

  I'm having some trouble setting up authentication in Apache2 for a SVN repository that's being served using mod_dav_svn. Here is my Apache config for the directory: <Location /svn> DAV svn SVNParentPath /var/svn/repos AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion Repository" AuthUserFile /etc/apache2/dev.passwd Require valid-user </Location> I can use svn with the projects under /var/svn/repos, so I know that the DAV is working, but when I do svn updates or commits (or anything), Apache doesn't ask for any authentication... It does the exact same thing whether the Auth directives are there or not. The permissions on the repository directory (and all subdirectories/files) only give permission to www-data (the Apache2 user/group). I have also ensured that all relevant modules are enabled (in particular mod_auth is enabled, as are all mod_dav* modules). Any ideas why svn commands aren't authenticating? Thanks in advance.

• OS X Server - setting up a share for network home directories + fast user switching

  I'm nearly finished setting up my Open Directory master to allow users to be managed centrally and logged in on any of the client machines at home. I found discussion suggesting that using an AFP share for the 'Users' automount would result in network users (cf. users defined locally, or Portable Home Directory users) are unable to use fast user switching, as the first user logging in would trigger the automount and mount the 'Users' share with his permissions, preventing further users from using the mount. I've also found some suggestions to configure autofs such that the 'Users' share is mounted prior to any user logging in, but not great amounts of details along these lines. I'd greatly appreciate some instructions to set up autofs - ideally, on the OpenDirectory server rather than each client's etc/fstab or equivalent location, so that it isn't required per every client machine - to get fast user switching working with network users.

• Domain Computers Not Listed In Network

  Our network computers are all connected to a domain, and I can see them if I search the active directory (I can click 'search active directory' and then select 'computers' and then Find Now, and all of the computers will appear). However, the computers are not listed in the network browser on any of our computers (Win XP, Win7, Linux, etc) which are connected to the domain. DC is running Windows Server 2008 (Windows Server Standard) with a configured DNS and DHCP server. All of the IPs on our local network are static IPs, although I can't see how that would make a difference. I can still connect to computers on the network via \\computer_name, but I cannot browse them in 'network' or in 'my network places'. The computer browser service is not started on the DC, but I tried starting that and it had no effect. DC currently has the firewall configured as 'off' to try to debug this problem. • How to automatically execute a shell script when logging into Ubuntu

  How do I get a script to execute automatically when I log in? Not when the machine starts up, and not for all users, but only when I (or any specific user with the script) login via the GNOME UI. From reading elsewhere I thought it was .bash_profile in my home directory, but for me it has no effect. When I manually execute it in a terminal window by typing ~/.bash_profile it works, but it won't run automatically when I log in. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. The file permission on my .bash_profile is -rwx------. No .bash_profile existed in my home directory before I created it today. I seem to remember older versions of Linux having a .profile file for each user, but that doesn't work either. How is it done? Do I need to configure something else to get the .bash_profile to work? Or does the per-user login script need to be in some other file?

• Setting up Shibboleth to secure part of a website

  I've installed the Shibboleth module for apache on Ubuntu 10.04 using aptitude to install libapache2-mod-shib2 as per https://groups.google.com/group/shibboleth-users/browse_thread/thread/9fca3b2af04d5ca8?pli=1 and enabled the module (I have checked in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled) I then proceeded to secure a directory on the server by placing a .htaccess file with the following directives: AuthType shibboleth ShibRequestSetting requireSession 1 Require valid-user Now - I haven't set up an SSL host yet - and I also haven't set up the IdP - but I would expect that the server would block access to this directory - but I'm getting the content without any problems. I have restarted the apache service and I have no errors in the log files.

• EPM Architecture: Reporting and Analysis

  Reporting and Analysis is the basis for all Oracle EPM reporting components. Through the Java based Reporting and Analysis web application deployed on WebLogic, it enables users to browse through reports for all kind of Oracle EPM reporting components. Typical users access the web application by browser through Oracle HTTP Server (OHS). Reporting and Analysis Web application talks to the Reporting and Analysis Agent using CORBA protocol on various ports. All communication to the repository databases (EPM System Registry and Reporting and Analysis database) from web and application layer is done using JDBC. As an additional data store, the Reporting and Analysis Agent uses the file system to lay down individual reports. While the reporting artifacts are stored on the file system, the folder structure and report based security information is stored in the relational database. The file system can be either local or remote (e.g. network share, network file system). If an external user directory is used, Reporting and Analysis services also communicate to this directory. • MPlayer does not work

  Using the xubuntu desktop, on Ubuntu Raring updated from Quantal. MPlayer never really worked. No video, no audio, nothing. • Apache ProxyPass ignore static files

  Having an issue with Apache front server connecting to a Jetty application server. • VMWare tools on Ubuntu Server 10.10 kernel source problem

  After install and running the vm-ware config, the config needs my kernel headers to compile some modules, ok, so I'll give it them, but it just won't work. It asks for the path of the directory of C header files that match my running kernel. If I uname -r I get 2.6.35-22-generic-pae So I tell it the source path is /lib/modules/2.6.25-22-generic-pae/build/include and it returns "The directory of kernel headers (version @@VMWARE@@ UTS_RELEASE) does not match your running kernel (version 2.6.35-22-generic-pae). ..I'm confused? can anyone offer suggestions please? I installed hte kernel source andh eaders myself using sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

I have never seen this error before. How can I fix this problem? Solution I managed to solve the problem: Delete the parent's directory of the folder giving the problem. Do SVN Update. A folder with the same name as the new one already existed in repository. Delete this folder. SVN commit. Copy the new folder, schedule for addition and SVN commit.

• Cannot Restore GRUB (Ubuntu 11.04 + Win 7)

  I'm trying to fix GRUB on my PC, but I'm running into serious issues doing so. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm completely crippled right now. Another part of the question - is it possible to enlarge the Linux-filesystem by not re-installing it and using the free space of home directory? Is it possible to do? I guess it is possible with rsync or something like that. Will my Mysql databes copy together with all other data? Thanks in advance!

• Filename encoding broken after unzip on windows

  I zipped a directory on my linux server. Many files in the directory have german umlauts in their filename. The filesystem is ext3 and the system locale is set to de_DE.utf8. I used the following command to create the zip file: zip -r somezip.zip somefolder/ I transfered this file via WinSCP to my windows laptop and unzipped it. The issue: All filenames with german umlauts are broken. On my linux server the filenames are displayed correctly. I assume that I made a mistake when i created the zip file. Has someone any ideas how i can perserve the right filename encoding when I zip the files with the zip command on linux?

• Protecting PHP packages on server

  Hi, I am a php developer and have recently decided to make one of my Magento extensions commercial. I have downloaded and configured MageParts CEM Server and that is all working perfectly in regard to licencing and delivery of module packages. The only issue is that the directory that the packages are stored in could be accessed by anyone. I tried this in a .htaccess file, but now it is not working. <Files services.wsdl> allow from all </Files> deny from all Clients are receiving a 403 Forbidden response. Have I done something wrong in the .htaccess file or would there be a better way to secure the directory? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Spam just keeps on coming

  I administer a Windows Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 as well as GFI installed. I am watching the GFI dashboard and every third email is spam. Not only that it goes to a non existent address then the [email protected] sends out an NDR to the sender. Should I be worried about this? I know it is directory harvesting but we have directory harvesting turned on in GFI and I do see it is working but obviously doesn't work for emails that don't exist. My issue is I would turn off NDR but then people who legitimately mistype and email address to our domain will never know their email did not get to the recipient. What do others do to combat spam? Is 3 times the amount of spam to ham normal? We filter out 90% of the spam but some does get into the users inbox. Thanks for the suggestions and advice!

• Create a folder shortcut/redirection in Vista

  Given a plain old directory of files in Windows Vista, say "C:\OldFolder\", is it possible to move the contents of that directory to a new location, perhaps "F:\NewFolder\" and keep a shortcut-like 'virtual' folder at C:\OldFolder that will always redirect access to the updated location. Shortcuts work for users accessing through the GUI to some extent, but all application links to the old location won't work anymore even with a shortcut. For example, If MS Word tried to access C:\OldFolder\document.doc I would want Windows to simply rewrite it's request to F:\NewFolder\document.doc... I guess I'm basically looking for Apache's Mod_Rewrite for Windows Vista... any suggestions?
