• iptables: built-in INPUT chain in nat table?

  I have a Gentoo Linux system running linux 2.6.38-rc8. I also have a machine running Ubuntu with linux 2.6.35-27. I also have a virtual machine running Debian Unstable with linux 2.6.37-2. On the Gentoo and Debian systems I have an INPUT chain built into my nat table in addition to PREROUTING, OUTPUT, and POSTROUTING. On Ubuntu, I only have PREROUTING, OUTPUT, and POSTROUTING. I am able to use this INPUT chain to use SNAT to modify the source of a packet that is destined to the local machine (imagine simulating an incoming spoofed IP to a local application or just to test a virtual host configuration). This is possible with 2 firewall rules on Gentoo and Debian but seemingly not so on Ubuntu. I looked around for documentation on changes to the SNAT target and the INPUT chain of the nat table and I couldn't find anything. Does anyone know if this is a configuration issue or is it something that was just added in more recent versions of linux?

• Problems executing check_mysql plugin

  I'm attempting to test out the check_mysql plugin for Nagios using the command line. It works great when I'm just checking localhost but when I try to specify a different server (using the -H argument) I keep getting the following error message: CRITICAL - Unable to connect to mysql://nagios_user@{remoteServerHostname}/ - Access denied for user 'nagios_user'@'{localServerHostName}' (using password: YES) It looks like it's trying to connect to the database using the localhost server even though I've specified a different host name. I've already set up this user on the remote database and they have correct permissions. I'm just trying to figure out why the script keeps inserting the localhost server name instead of the remote one.

• securing unpatched websites

  I have a client with a lot (read several thousand) websites in several old cms solutions that are no longer maintained. Now moving all of them to a maintained solution isn't really an option at this point. So I'm thinking about ways to secure the solutions without patching them. The solutions are mostly joomla 1.0/1.5 and wordpress. What I'm thinking is something like this: mod_suexec to lock everyone into their own home directory apparmor to deny any and all file writes by default. (exclude by default, include things like "images" directories). use htaccess to prevent anything in writable directories from being executed. (aka disable php_engine for images/ directory). mysql triggers to check the "users" tables to prevent adding new admins/superadmins. Does this make sense? Is it viable? Am I missing something obvious?

• How to change password schema for Dovecot user authentication for an already existing mail server

  Hello, I have an email server setup on Debian Lenny with Postfix, Dovecot, SASL and MySQL. Currently, the password scheme in my dovecot-sql.conf file is set to: CRYPT default_pass_scheme = CRYPT I would like to globally change the scheme to something stronger like SSHA, or MD5-CRYPT and re-hash all passwords with SSHA. What is the best way to do this? The Dovecot wiki mentions how passwords that don't follow the default scheme defined in dovecot-sql.conf can be prefixed with "{ssha}password", but I couldn't see anything regarding changing an already-existing scheme to a new one for all passwords that are already in the database. • Routing table with two NIC adapters in libvirt/KVM

  I created a virtual NAT network (192.168.100.0/24 network) in my libvirt and new guest with two interfaces - one in this network, one as bridged (10.34.1.0/24 network) to the local LAN. The reason for that is I need to have my own virtual network for my DHCP/TFTP/DNS testing and still want to access my guest externally from my LAN. On both networks I have working DHCP, both giving them IP addresses. When I setup NAT port forwarding (e.g. for ssh), I can connect to the eth0 (virtual network), everything is fine. But when I try to access the eth1 via bridged interface, I have no response. I guess I have problem with my routing table - outgoing packets are routed to the virtual NAT network (which has access to the machine I am connecting from - I can ping it). But I am not sure if this setup is correct. • Show Slave Status not working from console, nor client.

  Hello, I have a somewhat strange case. Whenever one of my coworkers executes this line: show slave status; from their MySQL clients, it works smoothly. But if I do that, it says: ERROR 1227 (42000): Access denied; you need the SUPER,REPLICATION CLIENT privilege for this operation We are all going against the same database, and if I check privileges I can see: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON . TO 'usermysql'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD 'password' There's something wrong with my computer.. but I can't pinpoint where it is.. Thanks EDIT: It's kinda bizarre.. it goes through a VPN remotely. But if I change the internet connection, then it works.. If the previous internet connection is restored, it doesn't.. Could we classify this among the great mysteries of the world? Or someone has an idea?

• Troubleshooting a slow database server with no load

  I'm getting ready to soft launch my website and I've run into some problems with what I think is being caused by my MySQL database running on Fedora. All websites run fine, just as I'd expect, but any pages that establish a database connection hang until the connection is established, and then bang, the site loads as it should. Ex. My landing page (http://www.thrusong.com) doesn't make a database connection and loads quickly. User profile pages (http://www.thrusong.com/john) make a database connection and load slowly, even though most of the data comes from memcached and the database currently has no load on it. This problem just came up yesterday when my router died and I began using my Pace 2Wire modem with built-in router. Before, my old router was set to handle everything. My ISP says the settings in the modem are correct. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  I am working on a Django project with a MySQL backend. I'm curious about the best way to update a production server's database to reflect the changes made on the development server's database? When I develop now, I make some changes to a models.py file, then to a schemamigration using South. Sometimes I do several migrations across several apps within the main project folder before it's ready for the production database. This means that there are several migration files in the app/migrations/ folder created by South. So on the production server, how does one update the database to reflect all the changes made in development, without having any data loss?

  Hi, I have a linux database(MySQL) server(Dell 2950) with a 6-disk RAID 10. The default IO scheduler on it is CFQ. However, from what I have read and heard, there is no need for a scheduler like CFQ when reordering/scheduling is also done by underlying RAID controller; on the contrary since it does not account underlying RAID configuration into account performance may actually degrade with CFQ. The primary concern is to reduce CPU usage and improve throughput. Also, I have seen recommendations of using noop/deadline IO scheduler for databases primarily because of the nature of their R/W access.

• Server error at large posts

  On a large drupal site, the database server is on a separate server connected directly to the web server. The web server uses apache and memcached. The problem is that whenever the post is a large, say larger than 10KB, the server does not return correctly. I checked both apache and mysql logs but could not find any trace of errors being logged. The error happens also when I use nginx/php5-fpm instead of apache. Despite this, the large posts are registered, however incorrectly so that they show up for admin when I open a new page on the site. I'm really confused and appreciate your hints to pinpoint the possible sources if this chronic problem.

• How can I generate a list of appendices with LaTeX, seperate from table of contents (toc)

  LaTeX' appendix environment formats sections differently and uses a different enumeration in the table of contents: \begin{appendix} \section{superuser} \dots{} .... Shows up as       A       superuser            11 in the \tableofcontents. Unfortunately, I have to use a different style: the appendix is not to show up in the table of contents, but in a seperate listing right before the appendix. I see the following options to solve this: suppress output in tableofcontents and somehow recreate the part on a different page generate a custom listing of specified / the following section manually create a list with the same formatting of the tableofcontents I use scrartcl as document class. PS: appedix / appendices is not a tag yet

• Is there a limit that a folder can store how many files and folders?

  I have this folder, called it 'X'. Currently, it has 40k folders and 70k files. I am abit worried, inside are the images. Is there a limit that the folder 'X' can store? That folder is important, it stores my current users images. Please advise? Or should I store in database (BLOB)? I am using mysql. Please advise.

• Word table copy/drag formulae like Excel

  I am inserting formulae into a word table to get subtotals for rows and columns and a grand total. My problem is, I have got large number of rows and I don't want to enter the formulae manually in each cell. I cannot use =SUM(LEFT) because the subtotal does not have all the columns. So, is there any way to drag the formulae like we do in excel(bottom right corner of selected cell)? I cannot send the table to excel and copy it back because it would ruin the formatting which took a lot of my time.

I host it publicly for everyone to use, but I've gotten some requests to allow companies to host the entire application privately on their internal systems. I have no idea what I'm doing - I have no experience with deployment or server stuff. I'm just some person who learned enough JS and PHP to make a tool for my own needs. The application runs with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. What's the best way to package my application to let others run it privately? I'm assuming there's better options than just sending them all the source code. I'd like to find a solution that is: Does not require support to set up (I'm just a single developer without much free time) Easy to configure Easy to update Does there exist some one-size-fits all thing that I can give to someone, they can install it, and bam, now when they go to http://myapplication/ on their intranet, it works? • phpMyAdmin logs out when selecting database

  I'm having an issue with pma whereby after logging in (as root or the database owner), and trying to switch to a certain database, I am automatically logged out. I cannot do any actions on the database and in the page that loads immediately before I'm logged out I note that I can't see any tables in the database. The database is accessible by the cli mysql program and all records are still present. To clarify: Literally login works fine, I can browse ALL databases except the one of my projects. Trying to use that database causes the phpMyAdmin session to end. Thanks!

• Powershell access a single value in a table

  this should be a really easy one but i can't seem to find an easy way. For example, in powershell and am using a CSV file, which is then used to look up some configuration data based on an ID. Here is what I have now, it works, but there has got to be a better way. $configList = import-csv "C:\myconfig.csv" $id = "5001" $configList | where-object {$_.id -eq $id} | foreach-object{ $configData = $_.configData} If use format-table etc, I always get the column header, which I would then have to cut off. Again, this has got to be really easy and this isn't a show stopper. But there has to be a better way to get just the data out of a table without the column header.

  I have a problem using view with MySQL server 5.0 (5.0.92) I cannot use view with a user granted like that : GRANT USAGE ON *.* TO 'testuser'@'' IDENTIFIED BY PASSWORD '**********'; GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON `testuser`.* TO 'testuser'@''; I can create view, but when I try to select in, I have this messages : ERROR 1356 (HY000): View 'testuser.v' references invalid table(s) or column(s) or function(s) or definer/invoker of view lack rights to use them I need to "GRANT SELECT ON . • SSD Performance for PHP?

  My programmer just built an application with PHP using Doctrine ORM (will be a high traffic social networking website), and it's very heavy in PHP/Apache and CPU. The queries are wonderfully fast, and MySQL is barely using any CPU, it's just Apache. I was curious to if an SSD would help speed up PHP/Apache, because I know the bottleneck is in PHP reading multiple files, class files, and loading up a bunch of data. So common sense makes me think if PHP is reading multiple PHP files, an SSD would only help as far as read/write? I was thinking of doing a high performance SSD for the PHP application, but for user image uploads, I would just continue using a 15k SAS. Is there any performance issues regarding using an SSD in this kind of situation? And would it prove to help speed up PHP/Apache, and help the CPU problem out?

• Mailing list with dynamically generated addresses

  I am trying to implement a dynamic mailing list from a database that changes quite often. Conditions: Postfix is the MTA Email addresses are in a MySql Database Postfix only allows senders whose emails are in that database (via smtpd_sender_restrictions) Cron job extracts the current emails from the database nightly and puts them into an alias file, then runs postalias on it. This works well, but since the sender remains the same, many domains are rejecting the email since my server is not a DNS listed mail server for the sender's domain. So, I either have to find a way to re-write the outgoing address as "listserv@mydomain" or find some mailing list package that will use database-retrieved emails (either queried directly or in a flat file) as the subscriber list, with that list replaced daily. I've tried Sympa and am pretty much ready to give up on it - it's a nightmare to get working right - but that's the only open source listserver that I have seen that works with dynamic mail lists. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Joe

  Hi guys, i am using this line to configure MySQL 5.1 MySQLInstanceConfig.exe -i -q -lmysql_config.log ServerType=SERVER DatabaseType=MIXED ConnectionUsage=DSS Port=3306 AddBinToPath=yes ConnectionCount=10 SkipNetworking=no StrictMode=no RootPassword=password it configures the server and the service is started fine, but the StrictMode is enabled even though i am disabling it in the configuration above... if i look at my.ini i find Set the SQL mode to strict sql-mode="STRICT_TRANS_TABLES,NO_AUTO_CREATE_USER,NO_ENGINE_SUBSTITUTION" which i think is not supposed to be there... am doing anything wrong? i am using the parameter wrong? • Getting a Cross-Section from Two CSV Files

  I have two CSV files that I am working with. One is massive, with about 200,000 rows. The other is much smaller, having about 12,000 rows. Both fit the same format of names, and email addresses (everything is legit here, no worries). Basically I'm trying to get only a subset of the second list by removing all values that presently exist in the larger file. So, List A has ~200k rows, and List B has ~12k. These lists overlap a bit, and I'd like to remove all entries from List B if they also exist in List A, leaving me with new and unique values only in List B. I've got a few tooks at my disposal that I can use. Open Office is loaded on this machine, along with MySQL (queries are alright). What's the easiest way to create a third CSV with the intersection of data?

• mysqld stopped working..can't restart...need help?

  i was just checking somethings and noticed mysqld is not running in parallels power panel control panel...but my websites on the server were all working fine, which use mysql databases...so really strange So i tried to restart mysqld but got errors and can't restart and now all my websites are all offline now saying error connecting to database. logged in as root and tried /etc/init.d/mysqld start and got this error ERROR! Manager of pid-file quit without updating file What do i do next? What do i do? Please help!
