• Overriding CSS style 'display:none' in javascript

  I'm trying to add a checkbox toggle that hides and shows list elements by changing their style display attribute from "none" to "inline", but it's not working. I'm setting the attribute's style to "display:none" in the CSS file. Then I set it to "display:inline" in javascript when someone checks a box. The javascript is successfully changing the element's property to inline, but for some reason the element remains invisible. If I do the opposite, by setting the display to inline in the CSS and overriding it to none in the javascript, it works fine. I don't see why this would work one way but not the other. I'm using chrome. Here is the code. Any feedback is appreciated. • (Python/Pyramid) Better ways to have standard list/form editors?

  I'm working on a number of Pyramid (former Pylons) projects, and often I have the need to display a list of some content (let's say user accounts, log entries or simply some other data). A user should be able to paginate through the list, click on a row and get a form where he/she can edit the contents of that row. Right now I'm always re-inventing the wheel by having Mako templates which use webhelpers for the pagination, Jquery UI for providing a dialog and I craft the editor form and AJAX requests on the client and server side by hand. As you may know, this eats up painfully much time. So what I'm wondering is: Is there a better way of providing lists, editor dialog and server/client communication about this, without having to re-invent the wheel every time? I heard Django takes off a big load of that by providing user accounts and other stuff out of the box; but in my case it's not just about user accounts, it can be any kind of data that is stored on the server-side in a SQL database, which should be able to be edited by a user.   The example below may not be problematic as is, but it should be enough to illustrate a point. Imagine that there is a lot more work than trimming going on. public string Thingy { set { // I guess we can throw a null reference exception here on null. value = value.Trim(); // Well, imagine that there is so much processing to do this.thingy = value; // That this.thingy = value.Trim() would not fit on one line ... So, if the assignment has to take two lines, then I either have to abusereuse the parameter, or create a temporary variable. I am not a big fan of temporary variables. On the other hand, I am not a fan of convoluted code. I did not include an example where a function is involved, but I am sure you can imagine it. One concern I have is if a function accepted a string and the parameter was "abused", and then someone changed the signature to ref in both places - this ought to mess things up, but ... who would knowingly make such a change if it already worked without a ref? Seems like it is their responsibility in this case. If I mess with the value of value, am I doing something non-trivial under the hood? If you think that both approaches are acceptable, then which do you prefer and why? Thanks.

• Applying iterative algorithm to a set of rows from database

  Hello, this question may seem too basic to some, but please bear with be, it's been a while since I dealt with decent database programming. I have an algorithm that I need to program in PHP/MySQL to work on a website. It performs some computations iteratively on an array of objects (it ranks the objects based on their properties). In each iteration the algorithm runs through all collection a couple of times, accessing various data from different places of the whole collection. The algorithm needs several hundred iterations to complete. The array comes from a database. The straightforward solution that I see is to take the results of a database query and create an object for each row of the query, put the objects to an array and pass the array to my algorithm. However, I'm concerned with efficacy of such solution when I have to work with an array of several thousand of items because what I do is essentially mirror the results of a query to memory. On the other hand, making database query a couple of times on each iteration of the algorithm also seems wrong. So, my question is - what is the correct architectural solution for a problem like this? Is it OK to mirror the query results to memory? If not, which is the best way to work with query results in such an algorithm? Thanks!

• Find Lines with N occurrences of a char

  I have a txt file that I’m trying to import as flat file into SQL2008 that looks like this: “123456”,”some text” “543210”,”some more text” “111223”,”other text” etc… The file has more than 300.000 rows and the text is large (usually 200-500 chars), so scanning the file by hand is very time consuming and prone to error. Other similar (and even more complex files) were successfully imported. The problem with this one, is that “some lines” contain quotes in the text… (this came from an export from an old SuperBase DB that didn’t let you specify a text quantifier, there’s nothing I can do with the file other than clear it and try to import it). So the “offending” lines look like this: “123456”,”this text “contains” a quote” “543210”,”And the “above” text is bad” etc… You can see the problem here. Now, 300.000 is not too much if I could perform a search using a text editor that can use regex, I’d manually remove the quotes from each line. The problem is not the number of offending lines, but the impossibility to find them with a simple search. I’m sure there are less than 500, but spread those in a 300.000 lines txt file and you know what I mean. Based upon that, what would be the best regex I could use to identify these lines? My first thought is: Tell me which lines contain more than 4 quotes (“). But I couldn’t come up with anything (I’m not good at Regex beyond the basics).

  Define a positive number to be isolated if none of the digits in its square are in its cube. For example 163 is n isolated number because 69*69 = 26569 and 69*69*69 = 4330747 and the square does not contain any of the digits 0, 3, 4 and 7 which are the digits used in the cube. On the other hand 162 is not an isolated number because 162*162=26244 and 162*162*162 = 4251528 and the digits 2 and 4 which appear in the square are also in the cube. Write a function named isIsolated that returns 1 if its argument is an isolated number, it returns 0 if its not an isolated number and it returns -1 if it cannot determine whether it is isolated or not (see the note below). The function signature is: int isIsolated(long n) Note that the type of the input parameter is long. The maximum positive number that can be represented as a long is 63 bits long. This allows us to test numbers up to 2,097,151 because the cube of 2,097,151 can be represented as a long. However, the cube of 2,097,152 requires more than 63 bits to represent it and hence cannot be computed without extra effort. Therefore, your function should test if n is larger than 2,097,151 and return -1 if it is. If n is less than 1 your function should also return -1. Hint: n % 10 is the rightmost digit of n, n = n/10 shifts the digits of n one place to the right. • Cryptography for P2P card game

  I'm considering writing a computer adaptation of a semi-popular card game. I'd like to make it function without a central server, and I'm trying to come up with a scheme that will make cheating impossible without having to trust the client. The basic problem as I see it is that each player has a several piles of cards (draw deck, current hand and discard deck). It must be impossible for either player to alter the composition of these piles except when allowed by the game rules (ie drawing or discarding cards), nor should players be able to know what is in their or their oppponent's piles. I feel like there should be some way to use something like public-key cryptography to accomplish this, but I keep finding holes in my schemes. Can anyone suggest a protocol or point me to some resources on this topic? [Edit] Ok, so I've been thinking about this a bit more, and here's an idea I've come up with. If you can poke any holes in it please let me know. At shuffle time, a player has a stack of cards whose value is known to them. They take these values, concatenate a random salt to each, then hash them. They record the salts, and pass the hashes to their opponent. The opponent concatenates a salt of their own, hashes again, then shuffles the hashes and passes the deck back to the original player. I believe at this point, the deck has been randomized and neither player can have any knowledge of the values. However, when a card is drawn, the opponent can reveal their salt, allowing the first player to determine what the original value is, and when the card is played the player reveals their own salt, allowing the opponent to verify the card value.

• Projecting an object into a scene based on world coordinates only

  I want to place a 3D image into a scene base on world/global coordinates. I have an image of a scene. The image was captures at some global coordinate (x1, y1, z1). I am given an object that needs to be placed into this scene based on its global coordinate (x2, y2, y3). This object needs to be projected into the scene accurately similarly to perspective projection. An example may help to make this clear. Imagine there is a parking lot with some set of global coordinates. A picture is taken of a portion of the parking lot. The coordinates from the spot where the image was taken is recorded. The goal is to place a virtual vehicle into this image using the global coordinates for that vehicle. Because the global cooridnates for the vehicle may not be in the fov of the global coordinates for the image I am assuming that I will need the image coordinates, angle and possibly fov. 3D graphics is not my area so I have been looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perspective_projection#Perspective_projection. I have also been looking at Matrix3DProjection which seems to possibly be what I am looking for but it only works in Silverlight and I am trying to do this in WPF. In my mind it appears I need to determine the (X,Y,Z) coordinates that are in the fov of the image, determine the world coordinate to pixel conversion and then accurately project the vehicle into the image giving it the correct perspective such that is looks 3D i.e smaller the further away bigger closer Is there a function within WPF that can help with this or will I need to re-learn matrices and do this by hand?

  I have this script that run to fix my menu bar to the browser on scroll. Nothing really needs to change here (works as it should). • BlackBerry Field class extension will not paint.

  Using JRE 5.0.0, simulator device is an 8520. On a screen I am using a FlowFieldManager(Manager.VERTICAL_SCROLL) and adding Fields to it to show data. When I do this.flowManager = new FlowFieldManager(Manager.VERTICAL_SCROLL); Field field = new Field() { protected void paint(Graphics graphics) { graphics.drawTest("Test", 0, 0); } protected void layout(int width, int height) { this.setExtend(300, 300); // just testing } } this.flowManager.add(field); The screen renders correctly and 'Test' appears on the screen. If, on the other hand, I try and abstract this into a class called CustomField with the same properties and add it to the flow manager the render will not happen. Debugging shows that the device enters into the Object, into the layout function, but not the paint function. I can't figure out why the paint function is not called when I extend Field. The 4.5 API says that layout and paint are the only functions that I really need to extend. (getPreferredWidth and getPreferredHeight will be used to calculate screen sizes etc.) Thanks in advance.

  I have written an OpenGL program which runs in the following way: Main: - Initialize SDL - Create thread which has the OpenGL context: - Renderloop - Set camera (view) matrix with glUniform. - glDrawElements() .... etc. - Swapbuffers(); - Main SDL loop handling input events and such. - Update camera matrix of type glm::mat4. This is how I pass my camera object to the class that handles opengl. Camera *cam = new Camera(); gl.setCam(cam); where void setCam(Camera *camera) { this->camera = camera; } For rendering in the opengl context thread, this happens: glm::mat4 modelView = camera->view * model; glUniformMatrix4fv(shader->bindUniform("modelView"), 1, GL_FALSE, glm::value_ptr(modelView)); In the main program where my SDL and other things are handles I then recompute the view matrix. This his working fine without me using any mutex locks. Is this correct? On the other hand, I add objects to my scene by an "upload queue" and in this case I have to mutex lock my upload queue vector (vector class type) when adding items to it or else the program crashes. In summary: I recompute my matrix in a different thread and then use it in the opengl thread without any mutex lock. Why is this working? Edit: I think my question is similar to what was asked here: Should I lock a variable in one thread if I only need it's value in other threads, and why does it work if I don't?, only in my case it is even more simple with only one matrix being changed.

• Get the package of a Java source file

  My goal is to find the package (as string) of a Java source file, given as plaintext and not already sorted in folders. I can't just locate the first instance of the keyword package in the file, because it may appear inside a comment. So I was thinking about two alternatives: Scan the file word-by-word, maintaining a "inside-a-comment" flag for the scanner. The first time the package keyword is encountered while not inside a comment, stop the scanning and report the result. Use a regex - should be theoretically possible because block comments do not next in Java, but I tried making such a regex and it turned out to be quite complicated - for me, at least. Another difference between the two approaches is that when scanning manually I can stop the scan when I can be certain the package keyword can no longer appear, saving some time... and I'm not sure I can do something similar with regexes. On the other hand, the decision "when it can no longer appear" is not necessarily simple, though I could use some heuristic for that. I would like to hear any input on this problem, and would welcome any help with the regex. My solution is written in Java as well.

• Runtime of optimized Primehunter

  Ok so I need some serious runtime help here! This method should take in an int value, check its primality, and return true if the number is indeed a prime. I understand why the loop only needs to go up to i squared, I understand that the worst case scenario is the case in which either the number is prime (or a multiple of a prime). But I don't understand how to quantify the actual runtime. I have done the loop myself by hand to try to understand the pattern or correlation of the number (n) and how many loops occur, but I literally feel like I keep falling into the same trap every time. I need a new way of thinking about this! I have a hint: "Think about the SIZE of the integer" which makes me want to quantify the literal number of integers in a number in relation to how many iterations it does in the for loop (floor log(n)) +1). BUT IT'S NOT WORKIIIING?! I KNOW it isn't square root n, obviously. • Best way to make sure I get all available options array/loop

  OK, here is my problem. I'm looking for the best way to loop through a bunch of options to make sure that I hit all available options. Some detail. I've created a feature that allows a client to build images that are basically other images layered on top of each other. These other images are split up into different groups. They have links on the side of the image that they can click to scroll through all the different images to view them. I'm now making an automated process that is going to run the function that changes the image when a user clicks one of the links. I need to make sure that every possible combo of the different images is hit during this process. So I have an array with the number of options for each group. The current array is [3, 9, 3, 3] My question is what is the best way to loop through this to make sure that all possible options will be shown? I apologize if this seems simple for someone out there, but I'm just having trouble wrapping my head around it. Hopefully if that person is out there, they can give a helping hand :)

• Book Recomendations: WPF/Silverlight for Business(smallish, internal) Environment

  Yes, I know there are an insane amount of Book posts here(SO) but none I believe for my specific need. If there is and I missed it I apologize. I am the only developer at a non-profit organization(~200 employees) where we are a M$ shop and 90% of the things I develop are specific to our company and are internal only. I am given a lot of latitude on how I accomplish my goals so using new technologies is in my best interest. So far I have developed all winform & asp.net applications but I am an expert by NO MEANS. I would now like to focus on XAML driven development(WPF & Silverlight) but I have no idea where to start. I am subscribed to numerous Silverlight blogs and I have went through a few good tutorials however, I would really appreciate a GOOD SOLID book in my hands going forward. I prefer learning books versus reference books and I REALLY would like one from a Business standpoint as well. Shameless, self-promoting is welcomed if you happen to be an author or reviewer for one that meets my criteria. I would, however, prefer that recomendations were based on first-hand experience(no, 'my friend as this awesome book he told me about', please). If more info is needed to provide accurate recomendations please let me know. Thanks

• How to create a datastore.Text object out of an array of dynamically created Strings?

  I am creating a Google App Engine server for a project where I receive a large quantity of data via an HTTP POST request. The data is separated into lines, with 200 characters per line. The number of lines can go into the hundreds, so 10's of thousands of characters total. What I want to do is concatenate all of those lines into a single Text object, since Strings have a maximum length of 500 characters but the Text object can be as large as 1MB. Here is what I thought of so far: public void doPost(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) { ... String[] audioSampleData = new String[numberOfLines]; for (int i = 0; i < numberOfLines; i++) { audioSampleData[i] = req.getReader().readLine(); } com.google.appengine.api.datastore.Text textAudioSampleData = new Text(audioSampleData[0] + audioSampleData[1] + ...); ... } But as you can see, I don't know how to do this without knowing the number of lines before-hand. Is there a way for me to iterate through the String indexes within the Text constructor? I can't seem to find anything on that. Of note is that the Text object can't be modified after being created, and it must have a String as parameter for the constructor. (Documentation here) Is there any way to this? I need all of the data in the String array in one Text object. Many Thanks!

  Take two different ways of stating the same behavior. Option A: Given a customer has 50 items in their shopping cart When they check out Then they will receive a 10% discount on their order Option B: Given a customer has a high volume of items in their shopping cart When they check out Then they will receive a high volume discount on their order The former is far more specific. If someone has some question about exactly when a customer gets a high volume discount or how much to give them, reading this scenario makes it very clear. Serving the purposes of documenting the behavior, it's about as specific as it can be, although any change in those values will require changing the scenario. The second is more generalized and doesn't have the clarity of the first. Automating it would require incorporating the values "50" and "10" in the step implementations. On the other hand, the scenario captures the core business need: a high volume customer gets a discount. If we later decide to use "40" and "15", the scenario doesn't have to change because the core business need hasn't really changed (though the step implementation would). Also, the term "high volume customer" communicates something about why we're giving them the discount. So, which is better? Rather, under what circumstances should I favor the former or the latter?

• How to arrange HTML5 web page elements?

  I'm trying to make a sample web page to get acquainted with HTML5, and I'd like to try replicating Facebook's page layout; that is, the header that spans the entire width of the screen, a small footer at the bottom, and a three-column main body, consisting of a list of links on the left, the main content in the middle, and an optional section on the right (for ads, frames, etc.). It's neat and displays well in multiple window sizes. So far, I've tried to accomplish this with a <header>, <footer> and a <nav> and <section> block, respectively. There's a few anomalies with the page, however. The footer (which contains a simple text block with copyright info) appears at the top-right of the page below the header when the window is maximized. On the other hand, when there isn't enough space to display everything in the window, it places the main body text below the section. In other words, it keeps moving elements around to fit the window. Could someone please tell me how I'd achieve the look I'm going for? I've tried playing around with a few CSS attributes I read about through Google, but I'm pretty sure I don't know what I'm doing, and could really use some guidance. Thank you!

• Unable to resolve class in build.gradle using Android Studio 0.60/Gradle 0.11

  Established app working fine using Android Studio 0.5.9/ Gradle 0.9 but upgrading to Android Studio 0.6.0/ Gradle 0.11 causes the error below. Somehow Studio seems to have lost the ability to resolve the android tools import at the top of the build.gradle file. • Facebook connect displaying invite friends dialog and closing on completion

  I'm trying to create a Facebook Connect application that displays a friend invite dialog within the page using Facebook's Javascript API (through a FBMLPopupDialog). The trouble is to display a friend invite dialog you use a multi-friend form which requires an action="url" attribute that represents the URL to redirect your page to when the user completes or skips the form. The problem is that I want to just close the FBMLPopupDialog (the same behavior as if the user just hit the 'X' button on the popup dialog). The best I can do is redirect the user back to the page they were on basically a reload but they lose all AJAX/Flash application state. I'm wondering if any Facebook Connect developers have run into this issue and have a good way to simply display a friend invite "lightbox" dialog within their website where they don't want to "refresh" or "redirect" when the user finishes. • Qt vs .NET - plz no n00bs who don't know wtf they're talking about [closed]

  Man in all these Qt vs. .NET discussions 90% these people don't know WTF they're talking about. Trying to get a real comparison chart going before we embark on a major fucking project. And yes I'm drunk, and yes I use cocaine. Event Handling In Qt the event handling system you just emit signals when something cool happens and then catch them in slots, for instance emit valueChanged(int percent, bool something); and void MyCatcherObj::valueChanged(int p, bool ok){} blocking them and disconnecting them when needed, doing it across threads... once you get the hang of it, it just seems a lot more natural and intuitive than the way the .NET event handling is set up (you know, object sender, CustomEventArgs e). And I'm not just talking about syntax, because in the end the .NET delegate crap is the bomb. I'm also talking about in more than just reflection (because, yes, .NET obviously has much stronger reflection capabilities). I'm talking about in the way the system feels to a human being. Qt wins hands down i m o. Basically, the footprints make more sense and you can visualize the project easier without the clunky event handling system. I wish I could it explain it better. The only thing is, I do love some of the ease of C# compared to C++ and .NET's assembly architecture. That is a big bonus for modular projects, which are a PITA to do in C++. Database Ease of Doing Crap Also what about datasets and database manipulations. I think .net wins here but I'm not sure. Threading/Conccurency How do you guys think of the threading? In .NET, all I've ever done is make like a list of master worker threads with locks. I like QConcurrentFramework, you don't worry about locks or anything, and with the ease of the signal slot system across threads it's nice to get notified about the progress of things. Memory Usage Also what do you think of the overall memory usage comparison. Is the .NET garbage collector pretty on the ball and quick compared to the instantaneous nature of native memory management? Or does it just let programs leak up a storm and lag the computer then clean it up when it's about to really lag? However, I am a n00b who doesn't know what I'm talking about, please school me on the subject.

• Mercurial client error 255 and HTTP error 404 when attempting to push large files to server

  Problem: When attempting to push a changeset that contains 6 large files (.exe, .dmg, etc) to my remote server my client (MacHG) is reporting the error: "Error During Push. Mercurial reported error number 255: abort: HTTP Error 404: Not Found" What does the error even mean?! The only thing unique (that I can tell) about this commit is the size, type, and filenames of the files. How can I determine which exact file within the changeset is failing? How can I delete the corrupt changeset from the repository? Someone reported using "mq" extensions, but it looks overly complicated for what I'm trying to achieve. Background: I can push and pull the following: source files, directories, .class files and a .jar file to and from the server, using both MacHG and toirtoise HG. I successfully committed to my local repository the addition for the first time the 6 large .exe, .dmg etc installer files (about 130Mb total). In the following commit to my local repository, I removed ("untracked" / forget) the 6 files causing the problem, however the previous (failing) changeset is still queued to be pushed to the server (i.e. my local host is trying to push the "add" and then the "remove" to the remote server - and keep aligned with the "keep everything in history" philosophy of the source control system). I can commit .txt .java files etc using TortoiseHG from Windows PCs. I haven't actually testing committing or pushing the same large files using TortoiseHG. Please help!   I have an application that will record and play audio files. Some of the audio files are downloaded using simple standard http downloads using httpclient. It worked like a charm for a long time. Now all of a sudden I cannot play the files I download. It fails with this stack. I store the files on the SDCard and I experience the problem both on a handset and a USB connected device. I have checked that the downloaded file is cool on the server, and I can play it without any issues.
