  • Web application development platform recommendation

    Hi all I did a year's worth of Pascal, Visual Basic and C++ 15 years ago, so suffice it to say that I'm a complete n00b & lamer when it comes to this. I really do hope that this question doesn't canned, but if it does, please be so kind as to point me in the direction of where it should be posted. I have an idea, like so many others, for a web app. I don't necessarily have the capital to outsource the development of the app right now, and I probably wouldn't want to, since non-disclosure agreements can be expensive to enforce, especially in this day and age of intercontinental outsourcing. I need the app to be usable on any mobile device (eventually), primarily on the major mobile platforms at first, on the web, (pc/mac/*ix) obviously, on mobile web browsers like opera mobile, etc. I envisage the app interacting with the major social networks like fb, orkut, msn im, twitter, et al in a way where friend's are messaged and/or wall posted, a message is posted to the users wall. Geo-location functionality is a plus, considering the service/app can be location sensitive in two ways, 1, the immediate location of the user, 2. the desired location of the user. I'd like to incorporate OpenID sign on, and the flip-side, the service will require that people (service providers) list their specialities/specialisations/interests/areas of expertise, so that matches to user requests can be made by the service, while users' requests are posted into the web universe. I've probably described a glut of apps out there, but I'd appreciate feedback on the sort of platform that I should look at using, be it hosted on something like Google's app engine, or written in android friendly code, or whatever. I'm a firm believer in herd mentality, especially at the start of a project that I have very little experience in. The more opinions, the merrier!     I am having an ASP.NET MVC 3 application that collaborates with a WCF service, which is hosted using Autofac host factory. I changed the binding to WSHttpBinding on the MVC side, but I am having different exceptions depending on how I tune it. I also tried changing AutofacServiceHostFactory to AutofacWebServiceHostFactory, with no result. I am not using config file as I am mainly experimenting, not developing real-life application, but I need to study the case. But if you think I can achieve what I need only with config files, then OK, I'll use them. I will provide exception details for each combination of settings if required, I'm omitting them not to make the post too large. Any ideas on what I can do?

  • How can I uninstall SQL Server Express in Windows Server 2008

    I installed Windows Server 2008 as the OS, but I dislike the SQL Server Express which it provide by default at all. So I changed to SQL Sever 2008 Enterprise. Here comes the problem, I don't know how to remove the SQL Server Express edition. In the Programs and Features under Control Panel, I can't find the installation of SQL Server Express which is provided by OS in default. What I can see is only the SQL Sever 2008 Enterprise edi. Any suggestion?

    We have a WCF service hosted on ServerA which is a server with no-direct Internet access and has a non-Internet routable IP address. The service is fronted by BIGIP which handles SSL encryption and decryption and forwards the unencrypted request to ServerA (at the moment it does NOT actually do any load balancing, but that is likely to be added in the future) on a specific port. What that means is that our clients would be calling the service through https://www.OurDomain.com/ServiceUrl and would get to our service on http://SeverA:85/ServiceUrl through the BIGIP device; When we browse to the WSDL published on https://www.OurDomain.com/ServiceUrl all the addresses contained in the WSDL are based on the http://SeverA:85/ServiceUrl base address We figured out that we could use the host headers setting to set the domain, but our problem is that while this would sort out the domain, we would still be using the wrong scheme – it would use http://www.OurDomain.com/ServiceUrl while we need it to be Https. Also – as we have other services (asmx based) hosted on that server we had some issues setting the host headers, and so we thought we could get away with creating another site on the server (using, say, port 82) and set the host header on that; now, on top of the http/https problem we have an issue as the WSDL contains the port number in all the urls, where BigIP works on port 443 (for the SSL) Is there a more flexible solution than implementing Host Headers?     I'm using two bindings TCP and HTTP. I want to give mex data on both bindings. What I want is that the mexHttpBinding only exposes the HTTP services while the mexTcpBinding exposes TCP services only. Or is this possible that I access stats service only from HTTP binding and the eventLogging service from TCP? For Example: For TCP I should only have net.tcp://localhost:9001/ABC/mex net.tcp://localhost:9001/ABC/eventLogging For HTTP http://localhost:9002/ABC/stats http://localhost:9002/ABC/mex When I connect with any of the base address (using the WCF Test Client) I'm able to access all the services? Like when I connect with net.tcp://localhost:9001/ABC I'm able to use the services which are offered on the HTTP binding.     I have an Entity Framework data model. Part of the model is a Customer entity. The web service provides a method to get a customer, and to receive an updated version of this customer to be persisted. To test this, I created a new ASP.NET web Application, (Solution Add New Project ASP.NET Web Application), then added a reference to my service reference using the standard Add Service Reference dialog. I then call the service using the following code: var client = new CustomerServiceClient(); var customer = client.GetCustomerByID(18); // get it customer.LimitDown = 100; // change it client.SaveCustomer(customer); // persist it Everything works as expected.   • BSOD Before Windows Will Loads - Graphics Related

    Alright deep breath here: (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit btw) Today I installed Star Craft 2 Beta. After trying to log in, it had some issues where it said my device stopped working (referring to my video device I have to imagine). After I force quit the game there were some random "hot" (various colors if i remember correctly) pixels on the screen. I decided to reboot and try again with similar results. I figured that maybe my display drivers could stand to be updated (I don't frequently update them as I don't often run into problems). I went out to nVidia's website and grabbed the latest drivers for Windows 7 64 bit GeForce 9 series. (I have SLi-ed 9800 GTs). Everything seemed to install fine and I performed the restart. This is when things went from bad (can't play SC2 beta ;) ) to worse (can't boot into windows!). Initially the very first splash screen - I think it's the bios splash screen - had lines of colored pixels covering it. It then displayed a screen that had lots of "(" on it. After that it showed the normal windows 7 splash screen as if it were going to load into Windows. Before getting much further, it BSODed on me. It was a 0x0000003B stop error. At nvlddmkm.sys. A little digging let verified that this was a problem with an nVidia graphics device, not a real shocker. Windows decided it would try to help me diagnose the problem, which it's only answer to was a System Restore, which did nothing to alleviate the problem. I was able to boot up fine in safe mode and was not able to roll back the driver, however I did uninstall the driver and reboot. I still had the graphical anomalies during the first two screens (same colored "."'s and weird "("'s), but there was NOT a stop error. Windows loaded up, found a default driver for the device and installed it and I restarted to let it load - and had yet another BSOD Stop error. Repeat driver uninstall, this time I reloaded the same version (I think it's possible that I was running a 32 bit version or a vista versus windows 7 version, but I don't have that information handy) of the nVidia driver from their website. Restart, same anomalies, same Stop Error. I am at a loss - At this point all I can think is that the firmware for the Video cards got fried or there's actual damage to the cards which I sincerely hope is not the case but the sooner I know the better. Any insight into what I might be able to do to troubleshoot/fix this problem would be most helpful. Attached below is a dump from DxDiag.     I've recently coded a .NET Console app using C#. It's purpose was to read the emails within a specific folder, parse them for specific values and save them to a database. Our email system, at the time I originally coded this, was Exchange 2003. However, I was made aware we would soon be upgrading to Exchange 2010: ergo, I built the code to work in both environments. Following the migration to 2010, however, the app has broken. The app uses the EWS API for 2010 functionality. When it attempts to use the ExchangeService's FindFolders method to find the publicfoldersroot, it throws an exception. The operation failed.") -Giving myself the highest level of permission to the Public Folder (no effect) -Manually setting my credentials (no effect) I can view the public folders in outlook; the publicfoldersroot property is available in the intellisense; the code works on local folders (I can parse my inbox). My current thinking is that it's a setting on the recent setup of Exchange 2010: unfortunately that isn't really my field.

    Hi, I have a windows service running under "SYSTEM" account that checks if a specific application is running for each logged in user. If the application is not running, the service starts it (under corresponding user name). I'm trying to accomplish my goal using CreateProcessAsUser(). The service does start the application under corresponding user name, but the GUI is not drawn. (Yes, I'm making sure that "Allow service to interact with desktop" check box is enabled). System: XP SP3, labguage: C# Here is some code that might be of interest: PROCESS_INFORMATION processInfo = new PROCESS_INFORMATION(); startInfo.cb = Marshal.SizeOf(startInfo); startInfo.lpDesktop = "winsta0\\default"; bResult = Win32.CreateProcessAsUser(hToken, null, strCommand, IntPtr.Zero, IntPtr.Zero, false, 0, IntPtr.Zero, null, ref startInfo, out processInfo); As far as I understand, setting startInfo.lpDesktop = "winsta0\default"; should have used the desktop of corresponding user. Even contrary to what is stated here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/165194, I tried setting lpDesktop to null, or not setting it at all, both giving the same result: process was started in the name of expected user and I could see a part of window's title bar. The "invisible" window intercepts mouse click events, handles them as expected. It just doesn't draw itself. Is anyone familiar with such a problem and knows what am I doing wrong?

  • How to sysprep SQL Server Express?

    We plan to deploy Hyper-V VHD with Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2012 Express installed to multiple hosts. From my understanding, the correct way to do this is to install SQL Server in prepartion mode, sysprep Windows, then complete SQL Server installation when the VHD is deployed. I mostly followed the process in this blog post: http://sethusrinivasan.com/category/sysprep/ However, after the VHD is deployed, I'm unable to complete the SQL Server installation. It keeps saying "Upgrade matrix is incorrect". It seems that it's trying to upgrade itself to Enterprise edition (I was asked for product key during install, but I skipped it). Could anyone share their experience in deploying VHDs with SQL Server (we're fine with either SQL Server 2008 R2 or 2012)? I think the source of my issue is because I can't select "Express Edition" when entering the product key at the completion stage, so the installation is trying to do an upgrade to Enterprise Edition. I have no idea why the drop down list is empty.

    Hello, I'm going to implement JSON-PRC web service. I need specifications for this. So far I had found only one resource that can be called as real specifications: JSON-RPC 1.0 http://json-rpc.org/wiki/specification Proposal of JSON-PRC 2.0: http://groups.google.com/group/json-rpc/web/json-rpc-2-0 (why is it on google groups?) However I've seen that JavaScript frameworks like Dojo actively use JSON-RPC SMD Service Mapping Description proposal But it requires JSON Schema specifications, but it redirects to incorrect URL as reference. So far I had found following: http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-zyp-json-schema-02 And it is still draft... Can anybody point me to spome actual specifications... At least something official updated? Because it looks like that implementing JSON-RPC 1.0 and 2.0 would not be enought, at least for frameworks like Dojo. Or am I wrong? Questions: Is it enough to implement JSON-RPC 1.0 specifications and 2.0 draft to be on safe side, would this work for most JSON-RPC clients? If I should implement SMD, or it is recommended can somebody point to official specifications of Json Schema and Service Mapping Description or links I found are really "specifications?" Note: do not suggest existing JSON-RPC service implementations.

  • WCF Datacontract, some fields do not deserialize

    Problem: I have a WCF service setup to be an endpoint for a call from an external system. The call is sending plain xml. I am testing the system by sending calls into the service from Fiddler using the RequestBuilder. The issue is that all of my fields are being deserialized with the exception of two fields. price_retail and price_wholesale. What am I missing? All of the other fields deserialize without an issue - the service responds. It is just these fields.   • Forms authentication in Silverlight

    I have a website using forms authentication. Everything runs sweet their. I've got a Silverlight app that uses Duplex messaging to talk to a WCF service. I'd like to be able to authenticate users in my service. I realize that by doing this <serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true" /> that my service would then have access to the HttpContext.Current context and I could easily authenticate a user. But herein lies the problem. aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true" combined with Duplex messaging results in very, very, very slow communication between silverlight and the website (10 seconds or more). Unless I have a configuration wrong, I'm going to assume that this is a bug in WCF / Silverlight. So basically I'm looking for a workaround. One idea I wanted to try was to read the ASPSESSID cookie from the browser and send that value over the wire. But I don't know what to do with the cookie on the service side. Is there some way to authenticate a user by sending their cookie data over duplex messaging?

I've come across a few enterprise solutions including: http://apigee.com/ http://mashery.com/ http://www.layer7tech.com/ http://www.3scale.net/ The Apigee enterprise plan is exactly what I'm looking for but plans start at $3000 / month which is out of my price range. The other solutions are all either to expense or do not provide the solution I'm looking for. This led me to look at some open source options including: http://apiaxle.com/ https://code.google.com/p/varnish-apikey/wiki/UsageManual Varnish seems like a fairly complete solution, however I would need to build a GUI to visualise the data. My final option would to build a solution from scratch using EventMachine and ruby. Any advice?

  • Old operational master still thinks it is the "one"

    Hi there, I have a domain with 3 AD servers for now i'll just call them: AD01 (Win 2008 GC, Operations master) AD02 (Win 2008 GC) AD03 (Win 2003 GC) A couple of months there was some hardware issues with AD01 so the operations master, PDC and Infrastructure Master was moved to AD02. All machines where on while this was happening. AD01 (Win 2008 GC) AD02 (Win 2008 GC, Operations master) AD03 (Win 2003 GC) AD01 was then shutdown for a month. Upon starting this machine up with replaced hardware (NIC and RAID card) i now have a weird problem. AD01 Thinks it is operations master still in AD on the local box AD02 & AD03 Thinks AD02 is operations master in AD on both boxes When running DCDIAG on AD01 i get a number of issues (listed below) When running "dcdiag /test:advertising" on AD01: Doing primary tests Testing server: Default-First-Site-Name\AD01 Starting test: Advertising Warning: DsGetDcName returned information for \\ad02.domain.local, when we were trying to reach AD01.
