  • Protect Data and Save Money? Learn How Best-in-Class Organizations do Both

    - by roxana.bradescu
Databases contain nearly two-thirds of the sensitive information that must be protected as part of any organization's overall approach to security, risk management, and compliance. Solutions for protecting data housed in databases vary from encrypting data at the application level to defense-in-depth protection of the database itself. So is there a difference? Absolutely! According to new research from the Aberdeen Group, Best-in-Class organizations experience fewer data breaches and audit deficiencies - at lower cost -- by deploying database security solutions. And the results are dramatic: Aberdeen found that organizations encrypting data within their databases achieved 30% fewer data breaches and 15% greater audit efficiency with 34% less total cost when compared to organizations encrypting data within applications. Join us for a live webcast with Derek Brink, Vice President and Research Fellow at the Aberdeen Group, next week to learn how your organization can become Best-in-Class.

  • How much should I charge an hour for freelance iOS development?

    - by Tyler Bell
I am a fairly competent developer who already holds a job developing iOS applications. This job is through the university which I attend. The producer of the apps that I develop is always trying to set me up with some freelance opportunities to get my work out there and to get me some more work/experience. What is a reasonable price to charge (either hourly or per app)? I'd be working by myself, on my own equipment, from start to finish in the design process. Just wondering what a reasonable price was...I've heard up to $30? Thanks

  • How can an experienced web developer transition to desktop development?

    - by Craige
I'm a web developer, first and foremost. I've been programming for 5 or 6 years now, all of which has been web-based. I'm good at my job, both specifically as a web developer and as a programmer in general. I have decided recently that I would like to learn some desktop programming to to beef up my skill-set. My question is this: How can an experienced web developer transition to desktop development? To elaborate: I have always been a web-developer, and I can design and build web-applications without any problem. When it comes to sitting down with a to learn some desktop oriented programming, my problem isn't with any of the technical matters, but rather coming up with an idea to program. I draw a blank.

  • Is there an alternative to the default lock-screen?

    - by cheshirekow
I have a tablet PC that I'm running oneric on. One thing I don't like is that the default lock screen requires you to enter a password. Since this is a tablet, this means that it either needs to be connected to a keyboard, or I have to figure out how to get onboard to show up for the lock screen (caribou wont even start, and gok is messed up too). Even if I could do that, anyway, it's not what I want, since locking the screen is mostly to prevent erroneous input when I'm carrying it around (not for security). Are there any alternative applications for the lock screen? Anything like the plethora of android lock screens that allow you to solve puzzles or push a particular widget in a particular way to unlock the screen?

  • DIY Door Lock Grants Access via RFID

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you’re looking to lighten the load on your pocket and banish the jingling of keys, this RFID-key hack makes your front door keycard accessible–and even supports groups and user privileges. Steve, a DIYer and Hack A Day reader, was looking for a solution to a simple problem: he wanted to easily give his friends access to his home without having to copy lots of keys and bulk up their key rings. Since all his friends already carried a Boston public transit RFID card the least intrusive solution was to hack his front door to support RFID cards. His Arduino-based solution can store up to 50 RFID card identifiers, supports group-based access, and thanks to a little laser cutting and stain the project enclosure blends in with the Victorian styling of his home’s facade. Hit up the link below to see his code–for a closer look at the actual enclosure check out this photo gallery. RFID Front Door Lock [via Hack A Day] HTG Explains: What is DNS?
