• capybara-webkit 0.8.0 installation error

  I cannot install capybara-webkit 0.8.0. I installed QT and added C:\Qt\4.7.4\bin\ to my PATH. And anyway I'm getting this error: ERROR: Error installing capybara-webkit: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension. • string concatenation in Groovy seems unconvenient

  My goal is to write this: println "this should be 3: ($1+2)" //this is invalid groovy, it won't run Yet this is valid in ruby. Is there a way I can put statements that will eval inside a string or must I use complete variables names? I am basically looking for the Ruby equivalent of: puts "this shoud be 3: #{1+2}" #this is valid ruby

• multiple puppet masters

  I would like to set up an additional puppet master but have the CA server handled by only 1 puppet master. • Puppet gives SSL error because master is not running?

  I started with two clean machines this time. My master is running 12.04 Version: 2.7.11-1ubuntu2 Depends: ruby1.8, puppetmaster-common (= 2.7.11-1ubuntu2) My client is 10.04 Version: 2.6.3-0ubuntu1~lucid1 Depends: puppet-common (= 2.6.3-0ubuntu1~lucid1), ruby1.8 To setup Puppet tutorial: http://shapeshed.com/setting-up-puppet-on-ubuntu-10-04/ To connect master and client: http://shapeshed.com/connecting-clients-to-a-puppet-master/ The first time I tried to connect master to client failed with SSL_connect error. So I did rm -rf /etc/puppet/ssl/ to remove all the keys inside ssl folders. It looked like it work.... • Vim - Displaying Code Output in a New Window á la Textmate?

  A few months back I switched from Textmate to Vim. Overall I really love Vim, but one of the things I miss from Textmate is using the ⌘R command to run Ruby code and having the results neatly pop up in a new, scrollable window. Obviously, Vim is capable of running Ruby code and displaying the output with :w !ruby. The only downside to this is that if the resulting output is too long I can't scroll through it. To combat this problem I tried modifying a :redir function from Vim Tips. It looks like this: function! TabNew(cmd) redir => message silent execute a:cmd redir END tabnew silent put=message set nomodified endfunction command! -nargs=+ -complete=command TabNew call TabNew(<q-args>) Now the output from Ruby is put into a new tab. However, I can't get it to pop up in a new, separate window. Changing tabnew to new just sends the output to a split in the same window. The other problem is that a visible ^M gets appended to the end of each line, so the output ends up looking like this, which is kind of bothersome: Hello World!^M So, is there any way to get the output into a separate window without the ^M appended to the end? Are there any plugins I should be trying to achieve this Textmate-like effect for code output?

• Cannot Start Passenger 3.0.18 Using Mountain Lion (OS X Server) and RVM

  I recently did a clean install of Mountain Lion on my Mac Mini Server. I installed version 3.0.18 using a gem according to the directions on http://www.phusionpassenger.com with no errors that I could see. rvmsudo gem install passenger-enterprise-server-3.0.18.gem rvmsudo passenger-install-apache2-module Here are my entries in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf with my username masked: LoadModule passenger_module /Users/username/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p327/gems/passenger-enterprise-server-3.0.18/ext/apache2/mod_passenger.so PassengerRoot /Users/username/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p327/gems/passenger-enterprise-server-3.0.18 PassengerRuby /Users/username/.rvm/wrappers/ruby-1.9.3-p327/ruby I uncommented out the following statement: Include /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf Here is a sample virtual host entry. I have three of them in the file. <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.mydomain.com ServerAlias mydomain.com PassengerAppRoot /Users/username/Sites/myfolder/ DocumentRoot /Users/username/Sites/myfolder/public <Directory /Users/username/Sites/myfolder/public> Allow from all AllowOverride all Options -MultiViews </Directory> </VirtualHost> I have restarted Apache several times. I was surprised that there was not all that much on this specific error even though from my understanding Passenger has been around for a few years. I have posted this issue on the Phusion Passenger Google Groups but have not heard anything. Any help would be appreciated, the sooner the better LOL. Seriously I need to have one of my three websites up by tomorrow evening. This is the only issue stopping that from happening. Thanks again.

• Better to develop Ruby project on server or buy a faster desktop computer? B/c laptop too slow.

  I have a Linux laptop (Vostro V13) running a Celeron M chip. This is a fine laptop, but running unit tests especially for Rails applications is slow. I want a faster development environment but I don't want to spend too much money. So the choice I have is between $390 for a Linux desktop machine with a Pentium Dual Core Processor E5400 and just paying between $30 and $40 a month to Linode and trying to do development remotely on that server. Can anyone with experience developing server applications using both methods offer any advice?

  I have this line in my .vimrc, which means "when I save a .rb file, run it through ruby -c" (the ruby interpreter's error checking). autocmd BufWritePost *.rb !ruby -c <afile> When I save that file, I always see output at the bottom of the screen, so I get used to it and start ignoring it. What I want is to only see output if there are errors. I can see that when there are errors, after it says what they are, at the bottom, it says "shell returned 1." How can I modify this line so that it only shows a message if the shell returns 1? Is there a way to conditionally surpress output from a shell command run in vim?

  I have a Ruby script that connects to a remote machine via ssh and executes a command. The script runs fine when I just run it in my terminal. In my crontab, I have 1 * * * * /bin/bash -l -c 'ruby myfile.rb' and if I go ahead and run /bin/bash -l -c 'ruby myfile.rb', everything executes fine. But when cron itself executes the job, I get a ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host error. What's the cause of this? How do I fix it?

  Tomorrow (Friday 23/4/2010) I am delivering a session at the Cloud Grid Exchange in London at SkillsMatter (A top training company and superb supporter of development communities). To be perfectly honest – I’m more interested in attending than presenting as the sessions and speaker line up look great. But in the middle of all that I will be doing the following (rather cheekily named) session: Looking at the Clouds through dirty Windows Many developers assume that the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform for Cloud Computing is only relevant if you develop solutions using Microsoft Visual Studio and the .NET Framework. The reality is somewhat different. In the same way that developers can build great applications on Windows Server using a variety of programming languages, developers can do the same for Azure. Java, Tomcat, PHP, Ruby, Python, MySQL and more all work great on Azure. In this session we will take a lap around the services offered by the Azure PaaS and demonstrate just how easy it is to build and deploy applications built in .NET and other technologies. • Experience of Python's “PEP-302 New Import Hooks”

  I'm one of the developers of Ruby (CRuby). We are working on Ruby 2.0 release (planned to release 2012/Feb). Python has "PEP302: New Import Hooks" (2003): This PEP proposes to add a new set of import hooks that offer better customization of the Python import mechanism. Contrary to the current import hook, a new-style hook can be injected into the existing scheme, allowing for a finer grained control of how modules are found and how they are loaded. We are considering introducing a feature similar to PEP302 into Ruby 2.0 (CRuby 2.0). I want to make a proposal which can persuade Matz. Currently, CRuby can load scripts from only file systems in a standard way. If you have any experience or consideration about PEP 302, please share. Example: It's a great spec. No need to change it. It is almost good, but it has this problem... If I could go back to 2003, then I would change the spec to... I'm sorry if such a question is not suitable for here. I posted here because I'm not sure that I can ask this question at python-dev (of course, the list is not for cruby development). • Composing programs from small simple pieces: OOP vs Functional Programming

  I started programming when imperative programming languages such as C were virtually the only game in town for paid gigs. I'm not a computer scientist by training so I was only exposed to Assembler and Pascal in school, and not Lisp or Prolog. Over the 1990s, Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) became more popular because one of the marketing memes for OOP was that complex programs could be composed of loosely coupled but well-defined, well-tested, cohesive, and reusable classes and objects. And in many cases that is quite true. Once I learned object-oriented programming my C programs became better because I structured them more like classes and objects. In the last few years (2008-2014) I have programmed in Ruby, an OOP language. However, Ruby has many functional programming (FP) features such as lambdas and procs, which enable a different style of programming using recursion, currying, lazy evaluation and the like. (Through ignorance I am at a loss to explain why these techniques are so great). Very recently, I have written code to use methods from the Ruby Enumerable library, such as map(), reduce(), and select(). Apparently this is a functional style of programming. I have found that using these methods significantly reduce code volume, and make my code easier to debug. Upon reading more about FP, one of the marketing claims made by advocates is that FP enables developers to compose programs out of small well-defined, well-tested, and reusable functions, which leads to less buggy code, and low code volume. QUESTIONS: Is the composition of complex program by using FP techniques contradictory to or complementary to composition of a complex program by using OOP techniques? In which situations is OOP more effective, and when is FP more effective? Is it possible to use both techniques in the same complex program? Do the techniques overlap or contradict each other?

• Space (and pipe sign) works on occasion only

  I have an issue that when I try to write pipe sign "|" and space after that, I sometimes get wrong type of space (\240) and my command fails. This issue persists on different shells. How could I fix this? • CoffeeScript - inability to support progressive adoption

  First if, what is CoffeeScript?Web definitionsCoffeeScript is a programming language that compiles statement-by-statement to JavaScript. The language adds syntactic sugar inspired by Ruby and Python to enhance JavaScript's brevity and readability, as well as adding more sophisticated features like array comprehension and pattern matching.The issue with CoffeeScript is that it eliminates any progressive adoption. It is a purist approach, kind of like the Amish, if you're not borne Amish, tough luck. So for folks with thousands of lines of JavaScript code will have a tough time to convert it to CoffeeScript. You can use the js2coffee API to convert the JavaScript file to CoffeeScript but in my experience that had trouble converting the files. It would convert the file to CoffeeScript without any complaints, but then when trying to generate the CoffeeScript file got errors with guess what: INDENTATION!Tried to convince the CoffeeScript community on github but got lots of push-back to progressive adoption with comments like "stupid", "crap", "child's comportment", "it's like Ruby, Python", "legacy code" etc. As a matter of interest one of the first comments were that the code needs to be re-designed before converted to CoffeeScript. Well I rest my case then :-)So far the community on github has been very reluctant to even consider introducing some way to define code-blocks, obviously curly braces is not an option as they use it for json object definitions. They also have no consideration for a progressive adoption where some, if not all, JavaScript syntax will be allowed which means all of us in the real world that have thousands of lines of JavaScript will have a real issue converting it over. Worst, I for one lack the confidence that tools like js2coffee will provide the correct indentation that will determine the flow of control in your code!!! Actually it is hard for me to find enough justification for using spaces or tabs to control the flow of code. It is no wonder that C#, C, C++, Java, all enterprise-scale frameworks still use curly braces. Have never seen an enterprise app built with Ruby or PhP.Let me know what your concerns are with CoffeeScript and how you dealt with large scale JavaScript conversions to CoffeeScript.
