  Finally another Friday has arrived and it’s time to waste the afternoon on company time playing a flash game. Today we take a look at a fun game called Abduction. Abduction Abduction is a neat game where you snatch people and livestock to sell them on the intergalactic market.   The controls are basic using the arrow keys or W,A,S,D and the left mouse button. • Creating a newspaper that effects the game's economy?

  I am writing a game in Objective C/cocos2d where a newspaper is a central part of what controls or rather effects the game's world economy as well as what a city might do (such as increase X, reduce Y) The newspaper is a bit like a "Chance card" in Monopoly, it has an effect on something. My question is, what is the best way to do write a newspaper that has both a random and specific effect within the game. Would the best strategy be to write out all the things a newspaper can affect, a PLIST of headlines (with placeholders). I think Tiny Tower uses a PLIST of events and it randomly picks an event, but I'm not sure how it actually parses it because certain events do different things. But then how do I parse all the scenarios that a newspaper can deliver? A big switch statement seems very long and complicated to do. I am wondering if there is a simpler way to handle this kind of thing. Related to this is that there might be no news that day and I'm not sure what the newspaper should display, should it just display the last headline? So, in summary. 1) A newspaper generates a headline, it affects different things, such as the world economy, prices, how city reacts 2) I need the newspaper to generate headlines (although there may be days when there are no headlines at all), but I am not sure how to parse it without using a big-ass switch statement. • Oracle JDK 7u10 released with new security features

  A few days ago, we released JRE and JDK 7 update 10. This release adds support for the following new platforms: Windows 8 on x86-64. Note that Modern UI (aka Metro) mode is not supported. Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) This release also introduces new features that provide enhanced security for Java applet and webstart applications, specifically: The Java runtime tracks if it is updated to the latest security baseline. If you try to execute an unsigned applet with an outdated version of Java, a warning dialog will prompt you to update before running the applet. The Java runtime includes a hardcoded best before date. It is assumed that a new version will be released before this date. If the client has not been able to check for an update prior to this date, the Java runtime will assume that it is insecure and start warning the user prior to executing any applets. The Java control panel now includes an option to set the desired security level on a low-medium-high-very high scale, as well as an option to disable Java applets and webstart entirely. This level controls things such as if the Java runtime is allowed to execute unsigned code, and if so what type of warning will be displayed to the user.   I am creating a game using Javascript. I am not using the HTML5 Canvas Element. The game requires both side view controlles, and Isometric controls, hence the movementMode variable. However, when I do Math.tan(45), i get a number similar to 1.601. Why? To Sum up this question. I have a function, and i need a function which will converts an angle to a value, which will tell me the number of pixels that i need to go up by, if i only go across 1. Is it Math.tan that i want? or is it something else?

• The best way to structure/design game code

  My question is quite broad and related to the 2D game code design/architecture/structure. Usually the main game consists of the main loop where you update & render your world states. However, it's recommended for many purposes to separate rendering from the game-logic and so on. I am kinda confused about the whole situation. Many game engines/libs/sdks don't follow separation schema. They propagate a way where you define some scenes/stages and they contain some objects and the scene/stage controls the user input and so on. For example, in cocos2d(-x) and libgdx (stage2d) the games are usually done the way that the update logic happens at the same time/place as rendering. Also, the propagated way is to have a structure where an object knows how to draw itself - which is not a separation of updating & rendering. The same with Flash based games, they are usually done the way when an object (class) contains a swf or a texture and some data and holds some update logic itself, or updated from main Scene. And again this object already knows how to draw itself via "addChild". Also, some people recommend to use MVC pattern, which will require to completely obey the structure of those engines/libs/sdks. Maybe I am overthinking everything, but I am totally confused. I would be grateful if somebody could point me to a correct direction with the game code structures. What is your way of doing things in libgdx/cocos2d/flash?

  Today I got some help from Jaroslav Havlin, the creator of the new "Search in Projects API". Below are the steps to create a search provider that finds recently modified files, via a new tab in the "Find in Projects" dialog: Here's how to get to the above result. Create a new NetBeans module project named "RecentlyModifiedFilesSearch". Then set dependencies on these libraries: Search in Projects API Lookup API Utilities API Dialogs API Datasystems API File System API Nodes API Create and register an implementation of "SearchProvider". This class tells the application the name of the provider and how it can be used. It should be registered via the @ServiceProvider annotation.Methods to implement: Method createPresenter creates a new object that is added to the "Find in Projects" dialog when it is opened. Method isReplaceSupported should return true if this provider support replacing, not only searching. If you want to disable the search provider (e.g., there aren't required external tools available in the OS), return false from isEnabled. Method getTitle returns a string that will be shown in the tab in the "Find in Projects" dialog. It can be localizable. In the example below, we have controls for a file name pattern, search scope, and the age of files. Method isUsable is called by the dialog to check whether the Find button should be enabled or not. You can use NotificationLineSupport passed as its argument to set a display error, warning, or info message. Method composeSearch is used to apply the settings and prepare a search task. It returns a SearchComposition object, as shown below. Please note that the example uses ComponentUtils.adjustComboForFileName (and similar methods), that modifies a JComboBox component to act as a combo box for selection of file name pattern. These methods were designed to make working with components created in a GUI Builder comfortable. Remember to call fireChange whenever the value of any criteria changes. In this case, SearchInfo and SearchScopeOptions objects are used for traversing. These objects were provided by controllers of GUI components (in the presenter). When something interesting is found, it should be displayed (with SearchResultsDisplayer.addMatchingObject). Method getSearchResultsDisplayer should return the displayer associated with this composition. The displayer can be created by subclassing SearchResultsDisplayer class or simply by using the SearchResultsDisplayer.createDefault. Then you only need a helper object that can create nodes for found objects. • Service Testing made easy with SO-Aware Test Workbench

  I happy to announce today a new addition to our SO-Aware service repository toolset, SO-Aware Test Workbench, a WPF desktop application for doing functional and load testing against existing WCF Services. This tool is completely integrated to the SO-Aware service repository, which makes configuring new load and functional tests for WCF Soap and REST services a breeze. From now on, the service repository can play a very important role in an organization by facilitating collaboration between developers and testers. Developers can create and register new services in the repository with all the related artifacts like configuration. On the other hand, Testers can just pick one of the existing services in the repository and create functional or load tests from there, with no need to deal with specific details of the service implementation, location or configuration settings. Developers and Testers can later use the result of those tests to modify the services or adjust different settings on the tests or service configuration. Gustavo Machado, one of the developers behind this project, has written an excellent post describing all the functionality that can find today in the tool. • JMX Monitoring of GlassFish Servers

  Did you ever wonder what this message in your GlassFish server.log file means? JMXStartupService has started JMXConnector on JMXService URL service:jmx:rmi://192.168.2.102:8686/jndi/rmi://192.168.2.102:8686/jmxrmi It means you can monitor any GlassFish server process, remotely or locally, using any standard Java Management Extensions (JMX) client.  Examples: jconsole or jvisualvm.   Copy the part of the log message that starts with "service:" into the Add JMX Connection dialog of jvisualvm:  or into the New Connection dialog of jconsole: (The full string is truncated in the on-screen display, but if you copied from the server.log and pasted into the form it should all be there.) The examples above are for a DAS, and your host will probably be different.   The server.log files for other GlassFish servers (instances) will have similar log entries giving the JMX connection string to use for those processes.  Look for the host and/or port to be different. Note a few things about security: Here we've assumed you are using the default admin username and password.  If you are not, just enter a valid admin username and password for your installation.  Once connected, you have normal access to all the JVM statistics and controls. You can use JMX clients that support MBeans to view the GlassFish configuration.  When you connect to the DAS, you can also change that configuration, but you can only view configuration when you connect to an instance. To use a JMX client on one system to connect to a GlassFish server running on another system, you need to enable secure admin if you have not already done so: asadmin change-admin-password (respond to the prompts) asadmin enable-secure-admin asadmin restart-domain (as prompted in the output from enable-secure-admin)

• Clients with multiple proxy and multithreading callbacks

  I created a sessionful web service using WCF, and in particular I used the NetTcpBinding binding. In addition to methods to initiate and terminate a session, other methods allow the client to send to one or more tasks to be performed (the results are returned via callback, so the service is duplex), but they also allow you to know the status of the service. Assuming you activate the same service on multiple endpoints, and assuming that the client knows these endpoints (for example, it could maintain a List of endpoints), the client should connect with one or more replicas of the same service. The client periodically updates the status of the service, so when it needs to perform a new task (the task is submitted by the user via UI), it selects the service currently less loaded and sends the task to it. Periodically, the client also initiates a maintenance procedure in order to disconnect from one or more overloaded service and in order to connect with new services. I created a client proxy using the svcutil tool. I wish each proxy can be used simultaneously by different threads, for example, in addition to the thread that submits the tasks using a proxy, there are also the following two threads which act periodically: a thread that periodically sends a request to the service in order to obtain the updated state; a thread that periodically selects a proxy to close and instantiates a new proxy to replace the closed one. To achieve these objectives, is it sufficient to create an array of proxies and manage their opening and closing in separate threads? I think I read that the proxy method calls are thread safe, so I would not need to perform a lock before requesting updates to the service. However, when the maintenance procedure (which is activated on its own thread) decides to close a proxy, should I perform a lock? Finally, each proxy is also associated with an object that implements the callback interface for the service: are the callbacks (invoked on the client) executed on different threads on the client? I would like to wrap the management of the proxy in one or more classes so that it can then easily manage within a WPF application.

• Update Since Microsoft/PSC Office Open XML Case Study

  In 2009 Microsoft released a case study about a project that we had done using the OOXML SDK 1.0 for Research Directors Inc.  Since that time Microsoft has released version 2.0 of the SDK and PSC has done significant development with it.  Below are some of the mile stones we have reached since the original case study. At the time of the original case study two report types had been automated to output as PowerPoint presentations.  Now that the all the main products have been delivered we have added three reports with Word document outputs and five more reports with PowerPoint outputs. One improvement we made over the original application was to create a PowerPoint Add-In which allows the users to tag a slide.  These tags along with the strongly typed SDK 2.0 allows for the code to use LINQ to easily search for slides in the template files.  This allows for a more flexible architecture base on assembling a presentation from copied slide extracted from the template. The new library we created also enabled us to create two new Word based reports in two weeks.  The library we created abstracts the generation of the documents from the business logic and the data retrieval.  The key to this is the mark up.  Content Controls are a good method for identifying sections of a template to be modified or replaced.  Join this with the concept of all data being generically either scalar or two dimensional and the code becomes more generic.   Much like every other Public Sector organization, school districts in the US and Canada are under tremendous pressure to deliver consistent and modern services while operating with reduced budgets, IT personnel shortages, and staff attrition.  Electronic/remote learning and the need for immediate access to resources such as grades, calendars, curricula etc. are straining IT environments that were already burdened with meeting privacy requirements imposed by both regulators and parents/students.  One area viewed as a solution to at least some of the challenges is the use of "Cloud" in education.  Although the concept of "Cloud" is nothing new in education with many providers supplying educational material over the web, school districts defer previously-in-house-hosted services to established commercial vendors to accommodate document sharing, app hosting, and even e-mail.  Doing so, however, does not reduce an important risk, that of privacy.  As always, Cloud implementations are viewed in a skeptical manner because of the perceived reduction in sensitive data management and protection thereof, although with a careful approach and the right tooling, the benefits realized by Clouds can expand to security and privacy.   Oracle's comprehensive approach to data privacy and identity management ensures that the necessary tools are available to support regulations, operational efficiencies and strong security regardless of where the sensitive data is stored - on premise or a Cloud.  Common management tools, role-based access controls, access policy management and engineered systems provided by Oracle can be the foundational pieces on which school districts can build their Cloud implementations without having to worry about security itself. Their biggest challenge, and it is a positive one, is how to best take advantage of Oracle's DB Security and IDM functionality to reduce operational costs while enabling modern applications and data delivery to those who needs access to it.   I am trying to make a class which controls a camera. It's pretty basic right now, it looks like this: class HoveringCameraController { public: void init(Ogre::Camera & camera, AnimatedBody & target, Ogre::Real height); void update(Ogre::Real time_delta); private: Ogre::Camera * camera_; AnimatedBody * target_; Ogre::Real height_; }; HoveringCameraController.cpp void HoveringCameraController::init(Ogre::Camera & camera, AnimatedBody & target, Ogre::Real height) { camera_ = &camera; target_ = &target; height_ = height; update(0.0); } void HoveringCameraController::update(Ogre::Real time_delta) { auto position = target_->getPosition(); position.y += height_; camera_->setPosition(position); camera_->lookAt(target_->getPosition()); } AnimatedBody is just a class that encapsulates an entity, it's animations and a scene node. The getPosition function is simply forwarded to it's scene node. What I want(for now) is for the camera to simply follow the AnimatedBody overhead at the distance given(the height parameter), and look down at it. It follows the object around, but it doesn't look straight down, it's tilted quite a bit in the positive Z direction. Does anybody have any idea why it would do that? If I change this line: position.y += height_; to this: position.x += height_; or this: position.z += height_; it does exactly what I would expect. It follows the object from the side or front, and looks directly at it.

I felt that way before, having been to most of them. The breadth of people and disciplines make it a really exciting event that pushes it well beyond the "Redmond bubble," as I like to call it. You should go.In any case, there's an Open Source Fest happening the night before Mix starts, on Monday, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be people there representing a ton of great projects, some as enormous as Umbraco, as well as people doing SDK's, controls and other neat stuff. Best of all, you get to vote for your favorites. Unless your favorite is Orchard, because Microsoft is sponsoring that directly. Or if it's POP Forums, not because Microsoft is sponsoring it, but because that's where I work in my day job. No prizes for me! Come by and say hello. I think the app will be nearly final by then, and it's already running on MouseZoom, one of my little side projects.The quality and diversity of open source projects around the Microsoft stack just keeps getting better. Our platform is also pretty great at running stuff we don't make. This will be a pretty exciting Mix. Can't wait!

• Windows 7 Phone Developer Tools CTP download

  For those that don’t know, you can download the W7 Phone developer tools now. It is available here. I have installed it and wanted to share my experience so far. You can read the pre-release documentation here. First, here is what it comes with the install: The Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP includes the following: Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone CTP Windows Phone Emulator CTP Silverlight for Windows Phone CTP XNA 4.0 Game Studio CTP First impressions: No ISO image install (Bad for me because I use multiple machine and have to install from a bootstrapper. Its around 228mb download. I already have the VS2010 RC, but it still makes me install the VS2010 Express Edition. Windows Phone Emulator will only work with VS2010. No support for 05/08. Need at least a DX10 graphics compatible card. Final Word: (you are probably going to need this info) To start a new project, go to Installed Templates and select Silverlight for Windows Phone and Windows Phone Application. Use Silverlight for WPF style applications or XNA for W7 Games.

  Want to win a trip to TechEd 2011? INETA NorAm is hosting a contest with our partners to see who can build an .NET application making effective use of reusable components to solve a problem. The Rules: Any .NET Application (WinForms, ASP.NET, WPF, Silverlight, Windows Phone 7, etc.) built in the last year (since 1/1/2010) using at least 1 component from at least 1 approved vendor. Then make a 3 - 5 minute Camtasia video showing your entry and describing what component(s) you used and why your application is cool. Our judges will review the submissions and the best two will win a scholarship to Tech·Ed 2011, May 16-19 in Atlanta GA including airfare, hotel, and conference pass. The Judging: Entries will be judged on four criteria: Effective use of a component to solve a problem/display data Innovative use of components Impact using components (i.e. reduction in lines of code written, increased productivity, etc.) Most creative use of a component.
