• Starting my first project and have no idea about it. Guide please.

  I am a Computer Science student (6th semester). I want to make a project and I have a team of 4 people (My friends). So we are 5 people and we have decided to make a "Web based file explorer". The project will be similar to THIS one. How should we start with this project? We guys don't know much about programming. I know Java a little and I am a RHCE so can handle the server and all such administrative stuffs. Since this is our first project so we guys have no idea how we'll make it? I know Java and other guys in the group knows C#, ASP.NET, PHP, SQL and Joomla. Please guide and give your suggestions. Thank you. • Knowing so much but application is a problem?

  In my work, my friends always tell me, you know so much about computer science, electronics engineering,..etc. But I have difficulty in applying them and my code is crap. How to solve that problem? Will I be better or programming isn't my career? For example, yes I know OCTree that is used for space partitioning in games and it is used for optimization, did I implement it? No, but I know about it in principle.. Do I know algorithms like Sorting, Searching,..etc? Yes, and I know them pretty well, but didn't implement them.. • Joining Two MKV files in Ubuntu?

  I have an opera that I'm ripping to my computer in MKV format with Handbrake. This opera is on two discs. Is there a way to join the resulting MKV's together? They will have the same bitrate, resolution, etc. If I do this, can I keep chapters from both MKV files organized? And, since I have subtitles in the file (not burnt in), will they still stay intact? I'm not too sure if this question is off-topic or not. If it is, feel more than free to delete it. :)

• How do I make Empathy match my keyring with my password?

  I changed my password a few months ago from the password I first used when I installed Ubuntu on my machine. I tried to add a Google Talk account to Empathy, but every time Empathy gives me a message saying the following: Enter password to unlock your login keyring The password you use to log in to your computer no longer matches that of your login keyring. I do not remember my original password and I'm not sure if I should go to Prefrences Passwords and Keys and delete my login password or if there is a way to change the keyring so that it matches up with my current password.

• Naming: objectAction or actionObject?

  The question, Stored procedure Naming conventions?, and Joel's excellent Making Wrong Code Look Wrong article come closest to addressing my question, but I'm looking for a more general set of criteria to use in deciding how to name modules containing code (classes, objects, methods, functions, widgets, or whatever). English (my only human language) is structured as action-object (i.e closeFile, openFile, saveFile) and since almost all computer languages are based on English, this is the most common convention. However, in trying to keep related code close together and still be able to find things, I've found object-action (i.e. fileClose, fileOpen, fileSave) to be very attractive. Quite a number of non-English human languages follow this structure as well. I doubt that one form is universally superior, but when should each be used in the pursuit of helping to make sure bad code looks bad?

• Who owns code if its written by one person with another person directing [on hold]

Basically what Im looking to find out is if I create software,and someone else gives me direction on what they want the software to look like,e.g. an image here,this font of text and it must behave in a certain way. Also some of the code was not developed on my computer and there is no official agreement in place. Not looking to screw anyone over here but need to protect myself if things go sour. • Access secondary hard disk from Virtual Machine

  I have a fairly specific question. I had Ubuntu on my Laptop (for years). For a variety of reasons, I've had to switch to Windows but the computer has two hard drives. The main drive was reformatted and I've installed windows. The second hard drive still has the Linux system disk format (not sure on type). Obviously, windows can't access it but can I access it from a Virtual machine (VirtualBox) or will I need to load up a Live-Session to access / move the contents? Edit: If this is possible, how would one proceed to mount the disk?

• Upgraded to 11.10 lost personal folders, Ubuntu one shows no files

  Upgraded to 11.04, from 10.10 system would only come up in terminal mode, but it told me that an additional upgrade was available and did I want to do that. Foolishly thinking that might fix the problem, I said yes. This time it did not make it all the way through the upgrade, when I came back to the computer over an hour later, the screen was filled with an error message "could not open display", had to reboot. Went to recovery mode on reboot to install nvidia module, when I rebooted system came up fine, but without carrying over my personal folders, I have the home folder, but no personal named folder in it. Came to Ubuntu One, but gives error message; File Sync error. (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked Is the a way around this in order to restore my files? I know my files existed on Ubuntu one as of a few months ago.

• Creating practically solvable 15 puzzle inputs

  I am now developing a 15 puzzle game. I know the method to detect unsolvable puzzles. But unlike 8-puzzle, solution for 15-puzzle takes quite long time for some input states and can be solved within 5 seconds some other set of input states. Now the problem is that I cannot give the user(the player), a problem for which the solution takes more than 10 seconds(if he/she chooses to see the solution). So what I want is that when I initially shuffle the puzzle, I want to only present those puzzles which can be solved within 10 seconds. There must be some way to determine the hardness of the puzzle. I tried searching the net but could not find it. Does anyone know a way of determining the hardness of a puzzle? NOTE : I am using A* algorithm to find out the solution on a computer with 3GB RAM and 2.27GHZ processor.

• How to maximize Java resources for gaming?

  I notice that when I play Minecraft, my CPU usage is only around 15 to 20 percent, at most. Is it possible to force my computer to allocate as much RAM, CPU time, etc. to the game, in order to get the best experience possible? Or, is the low CPU usage due to limitations in the JVM or the game code itself? I have OptiFine installed, and I've already tried using renice to change the process priority and -Xmx to allocate more memory to Java. What else can I do?

  What features of old computers helped you learn to be a better programmer -- but don't seem to be available on new computers? I imagine that, while educational, you are really glad some features are gone, such as programs ran so slowly that I could almost see each pixel being plotted, so I got a visceral feel for the effect of various optimizations. I imagine other features you may be a little nostalgic for, such as I could turn on the computer, and write a short program that printed "Hello, World" on the printer, before ever "booting" a "disk". (I'm hoping that this is constructive enough to avoid the fate of the " What have we lost from computers 20 years ago ?" question).

• Connecting to an Amazon AWS database [closed]

  so I'm a bit overwhelmed/bewildered by the whole concept of networking/remote-desktop , etc. The context is that - in my company I need to access a remote database. The standard way I use is to first connect using a VPN-Client( called Shrew Soft Access manager), then once that says: "network device configured tunnel enabled" I'm good to connect using windows "Remote Desktop Connection" . But now our company set up an Amazon AWS database, and I'm told I need to connect, and I ony need to use RDP. So I tried the standard windows one - but it doesn't work. On wikipedia , I looked up remote desktop sftware and downloaded one called VNC Viewer. but it doesn't work. Any advice/tips/comments appreciated EDIT: YAYA! I finally got a little more connected .   There was a joke going round a few months(?) ago that if the GM industry kept up with the computer industry that we'd all be better off (in relation to driving and costs). There was also a counter joke that if Microsoft made Cars you would, for example, have to squeeze the wing mirror, honk the horn and move the gearstick the reboot the car (CTRL + ALT + DEL) This got me thinking in terms of Apple's recent iPad 2 release, if Apple made cars what would they be like? What sort of technological advancements would software developers and programmers be able to implement if you built a car in a similar fashion to building an iPhone app. Xcode is you Mechanics garage, as it were. What would a car look like if it was designed by Apple Chief of Design: Jonothan Ive?

• Printing with Lacie Lightscribe requires root privileges

  I have installed Lacie Lightscribe software on Ubuntu 12.04. Everything seems to be fine, the drive is detected, the proper media is detected, but when I click print I get the message "Printing Requires Root Privileges". I am the main (administrator) account on this computer, part of the sudo group and I cannot seem to find an answer to this dilemna in plain english. I've seen some apparently relevant posts which say things like "check whether the files /usr/4L/4L-gui and /usr/4L/4L-cli have any setuid-bits set. If so, remove them" but I need more detailed step-by-step instructions than that, please. Is there anyone who knows how to solve this?

• Updates broke my themes/shell [Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome 3 ]

  I am running gnome-session 3.4.2.1. After the latest updates (listed below) my theme regressed to what looks like tango - not sure. Am unable to change it using Gnome-tweak tool or the display settings. I am also unable to change the wallpaper. Here's what it looks like: Synaptic: Chromium and this is the wallpaper page even though I have selected the wallpaper, it actually does not change. This same problem occurred on my personal computer, and one other computer I have, all running the same software/config. The interesting thing is that while Gnome 3 and Unity are affected, Cinnamon is not. What I've done so far: purged and re-installed both gnome 3 and Unity- no change noted. So, how do I fix this? • #altnetseattle in Closing

  So again, the #altnetseattle Conference easily was one of the most useful events of the year for me.  The amount of ideas, thoughts, and conversations that happen in just those two days often outweigh all the presentations I see at other conferences throughout the year.  The reason is simple, they are directed, to the point, and done with the ideal of open spaces.  This makes each session exhaustive on a particular topics.  Throw together some of the smartest people in the field and you have a bang up awesome energy and conversation. I got to talk about cloud computer, a little bit, and REST Architecture as sessions I kicked off myself.  Those were a blast.  I also got to meet a ton of other super talented like minded developers and engineers that are out there kicking the tires of .NET (and other languages/tech stacks like Ruby on Rails). Overall the conference rocked and I will definitely be coming back!  With that, I am headed home to Portland.

• Any enlightenment for understanding Object Oriented Programming? [closed]

  I studied computer science near the end of 1980s, and wasn't taught OOP that formally. With Pascal or C, when I understand the top-down design of functions, and the idea of black box, then everything just seem to make sense, as if there is a "oh I get it!" -- some kind of totally getting it and enlightenment feeling. But with OOP, all I know was the mechanics: the class, instance, method, inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation. It was like, I knew all the "this is how it is", but never had the feeling of "I totally get it", the enlightened feeling. Would somebody be able to describe it, or point to a chapter in some book or paper which talks about OOP so that the reader can feel: "I totally get it!" on OOP?

• I cant get back into Ubuntu after turning off my Acer c710 Chromebook

  I took about 1 hour installing Ubuntu to my Acer chrome book. I turned off my computer and now it boots back into Chrome OS (yes i know its supposed to) Then i went onto the Chrome OS dev terminal thing and put in the code sudo cgpt -i 6 -p 5 -s 1 /dev/sda. Nothing happens it comes up with another Local Host slot. I tried using the Ctrl Alt f2 and ctrl alt f3 but nothing happened. I really need to get back onto Ubuntu. All help is appreciated.

Now that oracle left the repos I wanted something easy to handle to install and uninstall, so I want to Remove completely sun java 6 from my computer and set as default OPENjdk....and openjre. I already have installed OpenJDK and OPENjre...but not marked as default. Besides I want to clean Sun java from here, dont wanna get messy ^^. Running ubuntu 11.10

• How can I inform search engines that the usefulness of some content on my site has a limited shelf life?

  Let's say that I run a forum dedicated to computer hardware. Naturally, people are going to ask questions like: What is the best laptop for running [os] Or What is the best video card for under [amount] These may be perfectly fine discussions, but the content loses usefulness over time. An answer to either question asked in 2007 might still be relevant in 2008, but definitely not in 2012. Is there a way that I can tell search engines that certain pages might not give visitors what they're looking for after a certain date, and perhaps hint to a page on my site that would provide good information? Perhaps something I could set in HTTP response headers, meta tags or even a site map?

• Consoles in Ubuntu and automatic upgrade

  So I recently discovered that ubuntu is simultaneously running 6 consoles in addition to the GUI that everybody uses, which can be accessed by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 ... +F6 and then the default GUI with Ctrl+Alt+F7. What use can these consoles have when I can just open a terminal in the GUI mode? Also, why is having consoles like this advantageous for computer users; wouldn't a GUI be much more simplistic? Also, running the console told me that I was running a development version of Ubuntu Quantal which is version 12.10. The login screen (correctly?) says that I'm running 12.04 LTS. What does that mean? Thanks everybody!
